O Estado Empreendedor: Desmascarando O Mito Do Setor Público vs. Setor Privado Mazzucato, Mariana Anthem Press, 2014
Pages : 395Bookfusion : No

Experiencing globalization : religion in contemporary contexts Derrick M. Nault, Bei Dawei, Evangelos Voulgarakis, Rab Paterson, Cesar Andres-Miguel Suva Anthem Press, Key issues in modern sociology, London, 2014
Today, in an age of globalization, religion represents a potent force in the lives of billions of people worldwide. Yet when social theorists examine the impact of globalization on contemporary religious movements, they tend to focus on issues such as Islamic fundamentalism and threats to US or global security. This collection of essays takes a different approach, analyzing - with special reference to Asia - religion through lived experience. The key issues covered in the volume include: how religious impulses contribute to globalization; how religious groups and organizations repackage traditional beliefs for transcultural appeal; how religious adherents cope with external threats to identity; how new technologies are reshaping the nature of religious beliefs and images; and how local and global religious influences blend and/or clash. Far from religion being a subject of peripheral concern to globalization, the contributors demonstrate that from the most basic level of our interactions with the natural environment to the socio-political behavior of the "great religions" - and even to the profusion of folk and pop culture phenomena - the influence of religion upon globalization, and vice versa, is apparent at all levels.

Top 10 vaccine objections : doubts and conversations Alex Ramirez, (Biochemist) Anthem Press/Union Bridge Books, London :, 2020
"If you have ever thought any of the following, 'Vaccines are not for me, I'm young and healthy and don't need them' ; 'I rather develop natural immunity to infections, without vaccination' ; 'Immunisation is a personal choice, it only affects me, so I'll take the risk' then this book is for you. You would also enjoy this book if you have ever heard people articulate these beliefs and you couldn't quite put your finger on why these are common misunderstandings. This book is a collection of honest conversations and discussions the author had over the years with people who have doubts and hesitations about the contents, purpose, and safety of vaccines."--Publisher

Muhammad Ali in Africana Cultural Memory James L. Conyers, Jr., Christel N. Temple Anthem Press, Anthem Africana studies, London ; New York, NY, 2022
Muhammad Ali in Africana Cultural Memory' is a contemporary evaluation primarily of Ali in African-American and African diasporic memory, based on the field of Africana studies' updated critical tools for considering inheritance, mythological structure, memorialization, epic intuitive conduct, hero dynamics, immortalization philosophy, and resistance-based cognitive survival. In terms of how Muhammad Ali, as an historical actor, has left an heroic legacy that bequeaths to us a sort of inheritance, the critical task at hand is to systematically explore this historical actor's life, feats, philosophy, grit, worldview, and even his folkloric antiheroic, to decipher his Africana cultural memory value. At the core of this edited collection is a commitment to enhance the cultural storytelling about Muhammad Ali and to critically itemize the lessons we garner from his life as allegory. The ancestral life is one that is remembered and recalled. The contributors' research uncovers Ali's local, national, and global encounters that are legacy worldviews. These perspectives give us direction for mining the critical depth of Ali's encounters which map his memory in terms of culturally sustaining confidence, self-esteem, reinvention, immortalization, and empathy. These are the fertile seeds of Africana cultural memory which bloom into powerful markers and monuments of an epic life of hyperheroic activity relevant to cultural memory, sports, history, politics, health, and aesthetics

Procreation and Population in Historical Social Science Daniela Danna Anthem Press, London, UK, 2021
The book sees procreation, the forgotten basis of population dynamics, and its macrohistorical results through the lenses of world-system analysis in a nondogmatic way. This interdisciplinary book sheds light on the historical paths leading to the current unprecedented numbers of humans on the globe, fuelled by the capitalist demand for labor and mediated by the role of women in society. Procreation and Population is a critical text, opposing the current disciplinary fences that demonstrably hinder our comprehension of social phenomena. Attentive to gender relations, the book boldly tracks "the big picture" of population dynamics and its most reliable theories in times of postmodernist taboos on generalizations and on the search for the historical laws of human society.

lgli/Wittgenstein, Scepticism and Naturalism Essays on the Later Philosophy (Anthem Studies in Wittgenstein) [3119947].pdf
Wittgenstein, Scepticism and Naturalism: Essays on the Later Philosophy (Anthem Studies in Wittgenstein) Marie McGinn A, Anthem Press, PS, 2021
Central to any interpretation of Wittgenstein’s later philosophy is an understanding of his philosophical method and the nature of the turn which characterises the evolution from his early to his later work. In the essays in Wittgenstein, Scepticism and Naturalism , Marie McGinn argues that this methodological shift has at its heart a highly distinctive form of naturalism, which has its roots in the works of Goethe. This form of naturalism emphasises achieving a clarified view of complex, natural phenomena in their natural setting, with a view to describing patterns and connections that are in plain view. Wittgenstein is seen as applying these methods to the task of conceptual clarification, whose aim is to dissolve philosophical problems and paradoxes. The essays cover the following topics: scepticism about the external world; scepticism about other minds; knowledge and belief; meaning and rule-following; psychological states and the distinctive first-person use of psychological concepts; the relation between the early and the later philosophy; and the nature of Wittgenstein’s naturalism.

lgli/Chaturvedi - Memory, Metaphor and Mysticism in Kālidāsa’s AbhijñānaŚākuntalam (2020) final.pdf
Memory, Metaphor and Mysticism in Kālidāsa’s AbhijñānaŚākuntalam Namrata Chaturvedi Anthem Press, Illustrated, 2020
As an ancient Indian poet-dramatist, Kālidāsa cannot be absorbed into the homogenizing tendencies of Hindu hagiography, as has often been attempted, especially in the period after independence. Kālidāsa is critiqued for a patriarchal and casteist outlook. These various readings have privileged personal theories and validated them by reading literary texts in certain ways. This book brings together scholars from both sides of the globe who offer possibilities for reviewing this text, not as an Oriental discovery or a cultural property, but as an ancient literary text that can be read in multiple philosophical contexts. Further, the translations of AbhijñānaŚākuntalam into South Asian languages like Urdu and Nepali, and a classical language like Persian, are also included for detailed study for understanding the impact of this text in the respective literary traditions of these languages, and to assess the actual cross-literary dialogue that this text made, without hyperboles and generalizations, given the fact that many of these translation happened just before and after independence when literary historiography and nation writing project went hand in hand in India

Male Homosexuality in 21st-century Thailand: A Longitudinal Study of Young, Rural, Same-sex-attracted Men Coming of Age (Anthem Studies in Sexuality, Gender and Culture) Jan W. de Lind van Wijngaarden Anthem Press, Anthem studies in sexuality, gender and culture, London, 2021
This book presents the very first analysis of male homosexuality in modern rural Thailand that is based on sociological/anthropological research directly with 25 young same-sex attracted men. It explores changes in the way men view and describe their sexuality over time by interviewing them three times over a period of around 18 months. The men are followed during an important transition in their lives: the end of their high school years and the end (in most cases) of their life as a child with parents or extended family at a rural home. Nearly all decided to move to a city to continue their education or to find work. Some also had stints with sex work in one of Thailand’s well-known centers for prostitution. For nearly all men, this transition brought them into contact with new ideas about gender and sexuality, and many experienced an abrupt increase in their opportunities to have sex, leading to a readjustment of their moral universes. The book presents significant new insights about the Thai sex/gender system, particularly on how it is affected by processes of globalization and the ascent of the Internet and mobile phones as tools for dating and romance.

"Stephen Wall, 'Trollope and Character' (1988) and Other Essays on Victorian Literature, with an introduction by Nicholas Shrimpton, gathers together the principal publications of the distinguished scholar-critic Stephen Wall. Widely regarded for his writings on the Victorian novel, Wall's major writings about Anthony Trollope and Charles Dickens, including the full text of his book-length study Trollope and Character (1988) and a history of Dickens's reception are contained in this volume. Also included are Wall's reflections on Jane Austen and George Eliot and on other aspects of nineteenth-century fiction, as well as his influential essay on the ways in which English novels should be edited. Together, the essays communicate the mixture of learning, human sympathy, critical intelligence and dry wit that made Wall's voice so distinctive and trusted"-- Provided by publisher

Complexity of Transboundary Water Conflicts: Enabling Conditions for Negotiating Contingent Resolutions (Science Diplomacy: Managing Food, Energy and Water Sustainably) Enamul Choudhury; Shafiqul Islam Anthem Water Diplomacy, Anthem water diplomacy series, London, 2018
'Transboundary Water Management as a Complex Problem'seeks to understand transboundary water governance as complex systems with contingent conditions and possibilities. To address those conditions and leverage the possibilities it introduces the concept of enabling conditions as a pragmatic way to identify and act on the emergent possibilities to resolve transboundary water issues. Based on this theoretical frame, the book applies ideas and tools from complexity science, contingency and enabling conditions to account for events in the formulation of treaties/agreements between disputing riparian states in river basins across the world (Indus, Jordan, Nile, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Colorado, Danube, Senegal and Zayandehrud). It also includes a section on scholars' reflections on the relevance and weakness of the theoretical framework. The book goes beyond the conventional use of the terms 'complexity', 'contingency' and 'enabling conditions' and anchors them in their theoretical foundations. The argument distinguishes itself from the conventional meaning and usage of the terms of necessary and sufficient conditions in causal explanations. The book's focus is to identify conditions that set the stage to move from the world of seemingly infinite possibilities to actionable reality. Three enabling conditions - active recognition of interdependence, mutual value creation through negotiation and adaptive governance through learning - are identified and explored for their meaning and function in specific transboundary water disputes.

Empire and the Animal Body: Violence, Identity and Ecology in Victorian Adventure Fiction (Anthem Nineteenth-Century Series) Miller, John, John Miller Anthem Press, Anthem nineteenth-century series, Reprint, 2014
‘Empire and the Animal Body: Violence, Identity and Ecology in Victorian Adventure Fiction’ develops recent work in animal studies, eco-criticism and postcolonial studies to reassess the significance of exotic animals in Victorian adventure literature. Depictions of violence against animals were integral to the ideology of adventure literature in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, the evolutionary hierarchies on which such texts relied were complicated by developing environmental sensitivities and reimaginings of human selfhood in relation to animal others. As these texts hankered after increasingly imperilled areas of wilderness, the border between human and animal appeared tense, ambivalent and problematic.

Jax' House John Kitchen London: Union Bridge Books, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), London, 2016
Do old houses hold secrets? Can those secrets affect the lives of people who live there now? Jack O'Hagen has moved to a house in Cornwall that certainly has a secret – a secret it is determined to share. Two hundred years ago, a young Martha Jax enters into service in this house. Because she has a superb singing voice, she becomes embroiled in her employer's smuggling activities. She is made to dress as a ghost and walk the smuggler's route with her singing to scare away anyone who is not involved. She hates what she is being made to do and, in desperation, she searches for her brother, a young dragoon who works for the king's excise men. Together they expose the smugglers, but disastrous consequences emerge for Martha and her brother. The locals, dependent on free trading for their income, mete out a savage revenge. When Jack steps over the threshold of the house for the first time, he is swamped by the overwhelming force of déjà vu. He is convinced he's been here before, and he knows the building's layout with unnerving clarity. When doors lock, Jack's only means of access is a rusted key found in the cellar. Using this key thrusts him back to the world of Martha Jax where he relives her story. Each time he returns to the present, however, only vague impressions of the past remain with him. It is only when Jack finds out something more about Martha Jax that he attains a final peace for the house. | Jack O'Hagan has never set eyes on his new home in Cornwall, yet he knows every twist of the stairs. He knows what lies behind every door. He senses that the stories buried in the ancient walls have been part of him since before he was born. Things about the present are not right – noises in deep caverns running beneath the cellar and a next-door-neighbour who fills him with fear and distrust. The House is throbbing with secrets, and it is determined to share these secrets with Jack.

It locates the victory of Mount Badon in 493 of the Britons over the West Saxons at Braydon, Wiltshire; the battles of the British hero Arthur (of the ‘King Arthur’ legend) in southern Scotland and the borders, with his death in 537 at ‘Camlan’ or Castlesteads, near Carlisle; ‘Degsastan’, the Northumbrian massacre of an allied Scots-Irish army in 603, at Dawyck on the Upper Tweed, Scotland, where a standing stone at Drumelzier is the Stan of the conflict’s ancient name; Maserfelth in 642, where King Oswald of Northumbria was killed and his head and arms nailed up as trophies, will be at Forden (near Welshpool), on the old Roman road into Wales; and Brunanburh of 937, where Athelstan crushed the forces of united Viking-Scots-Strathclyde invaders, at Lanchester in County Durham, above the Brune or River Browney. The implications of the book are threefold. First, it will mean the rewriting of much early British and Anglo-Saxon history; knowing where battles took place means that we shall understand better the war-aims of those who won or lost them. The second is a benefit for battle archaeologists. They need not waste time seeking swords and spears at traditional locations for these battles, like Badbury in Wiltshire for 493 or Oswestry in Shropshire for 642 or Bromborough in Cheshire for 937 because they would be digging in the wrong place. The third is the indication of a method, as follows. An analysis of early place-names in Old English or Middle Welsh or other languages lets us pin-point ancient battlefields. It allows us to show that the ‘Legionum Urbs’ of the Roman martyrs Julius and Aaron was surely not Caerleon in South Wales (as often said), but Legorum Urbs or Leicester, which is hence the scene of Britain's earliest Christian martyrdoms. Similarly, the birthplace of St. Patrick can be proved (following suggestions by others) as Bannaventa Tabernae or Banwell, Avon. St. Patrick will have been a Somerset man, brought up on a Roman villa near a low-lying coast open to the Irish pirates who enslaved him. British Battles 493–937 thus indicates techniques whereby future researchers may solve historical problems in Britain and beyond.

Colonial Australian Women Poets: Political Voice and Feminist Traditions (Anthem Studies in Australian Literature and Culture) Katie Hansord Anthem Press, Anthem studies in Australian literature and culture, London, 2021
This study examines the significant roles of five women poets, in order of chronology: Eliza Hamilton Dunlop, Mary Bailey, Caroline Leakey, Emily Manning, and Louisa Lawson. The work of these poets can outline the development of women's poetry in Australia and internationally across the nineteenth century, and their inclusion radically alters current scholarship, rethinking the ways in which women poets, feminist politics, and the legacies of Romanticism relate to colonial poetry. Colonial poetry in Australia has generally been interpreted through a lens of oppositionality or insularity. These poets are examined through a transnational frame, which foregrounds challenges to women's subjugation, and oppression relating to class, and race. Since studies of colonial Australian women writers have tended to focus on those writing novels or journals, women's poetry of the period has received less critical attention. The highly gender-conscious writing of these poets reflects knowledgeable and innovative political dialogues that consistently demonstrate the global context of colonial women's poetry. These poets often took what may be considered a cosmopolitan approach, which extended beyond British or emergent Australian nationalisms, in which gender was recognised as a unifying category far more than nation or Empire, extending their interests across ancient cultures as well as European cultures, and sometimes incorporating discourses around slavery, indigeneity, and New- and Old-World dichotomies. This book is concerned with the related historical relationships of women's political writing and gender to colonialism, literary romanticism, and emerging national identities. Themes explored in this study, demonstrating these poets' access to a political discourse of gender and class, include abolitionism, Hellenism, eroticism and spiritualism. In prioritising the contributions of women, particularly through print culture, this study seeks to recognise colonial Australian women's poetry as a transnational literature, politicised by its engagement with imperialist and nationalist discourses at a transnational level

Apportionment of Blame Redfern, Keith Anthem Press, London, 2014
When Joyce Hetherington loses her half-sister in a tragic and mysterious railway accident, she calls on her old school friend, Greg Mason, to investigate. Greg has recently begun his own private detective agency and, together, the two uncover secret after secret about her past and the strange set of circumstances surrounding Helen's death, including details about the inheritance that she was set to receive from her grandmother – an inheritance that was granted instead to an unknown beneficiary. As they sink deeper and deeper into the case, Greg and Joyce begin to realise that not everything is as it seems, and certain seemingly unrelated threads in her family story – some stretching as far back as World War II – have the potential to weave a web with far greater implications than either of them could have ever imagined.

Wish : a tale in verse Tolkien, Michael Union Bridge Books, Mar 01, 2013
The tale is set in an alpine region at no specified time. Depending on age and disposition, humans freely commune with creatures and plants. Valley farming people are haunted by the malice and thieving of Faengler, a cunning, embittered enchanter who abuses an ancient wishing chain of potent stones. All people hope that a hero will cross the high pass into the villain's shadowy, fortified valley, seize the chain and realise everyone's dreams of wealth and security. Adam the forester typifies this simplistic view. His wife, Maria, is more reflective and cautious. The contrast is reflected in their children, Berwald and Clara. Influenced by Adam, the children leave the shelter of their home and valley unprepared and in secret to take the chain and return triumphant. Their journey through an inhospitable landscape is peopled by plants and creatures who show puzzling extremes of pride, greed and generosity, and who reveal that the colour of wishes determines our outlook and actions. Berwald reacts by becoming more egotistic and ruthless, whereas the experience brings out Clara's gentler, more intuitive nature. Once they enter Faengler's realms this difference affects the children's treatment by the villain, his stunted guards and captive spirits. Clara's 'rose-hearted' benevolence instils fear; Berwald's insolence and 'red' wishes redouble their power and enable Faengler to imprison the children in a dead forest, depriving them of all contact with their 'natural' allies. They try to escape only to be pitched into an inaccessible marshy valley among captured herds. Meanwhile, Adam and Maria assume their children have been stolen by Faengler. All else failing, Adam tramps many miles to consult Well-Wisher, an old but ageless seer. Her lightly held yet profound insight and knowledge seem to derive from a preoccupation with dreams. Adam demands a quick solution but he must reject the power of his axe and accept improbable leads. He follows a beetle on a treacherous mountain journey to Faengler's borders. Her forthright but moving narrative of the old thief's disillusioned life evokes his pity and understanding, 'rose-heartedness' that breaks a spell cast by Faengler. The beetle is transformed to her former glory as Alpenrose, and Adam is inclined to doubt whether violence and vengeance will secure his children's release, though he has more to learn. They enter the hostile forest and caves unopposed. The benevolent rose-coloured aura shed by Alpenrose frees spirits and guards from gloom and captivity, and reduces the tyrant to a defenceless old cipher. Concern for his children and stolen flock kindles righteous anger in Adam but he forgets the magic necklace as he punishes the thief by locking him in a cloven pine. It is Clara who confronts her father and brother (now quietly ashamed of his role) with Faengler's defencelessness, and makes them agree to his release. In a moment of redemption the cowering villain hands the chain to Clara who makes her father its guardian. Adam looks at the suddenly untarnished and diminished set of stones and wonders what they can achieve now he has won back his children and flock and can restore them all to his anxious wife. The future of the chain and of Faengler is left in abeyance.

The British National Daily Press and Popular Music, c. 1956–1975 Gillian A. M. Mitchell Anthem Press, Anthem studies in British history, London, UK, 2019
'The British National Daily Press and Popular Music, c.1956-1975' constitutes a reappraisal of the reactions of the national daily press to forms of music popular with young people in Britain from the mid-1950s to the 1970s (including rock 'n' roll, skiffle, 'beat group' and rock music). Conventional histories of popular music in Britain frequently accuse the newspapers of generating 'moral panic' with regard to these musical genres and of helping to shape negative attitudes to the music within the wider society. This book questions such charges and considers whether alternative perspectives on press attitudes towards popular music may be discerned. In doing so, it also challenges the tendency to perceive evidence from newspapers straightforwardly as a mere illustration of wider social trends and considers the manner in which the post-war newspaper industry, as a socio-cultural entity in its own right, responded to developments in youth culture as it faced distinctive challenges and pressures amid changing times

Tanpinar's Five Cities (Anthem Cosmopolis Writings) Ahmed Hamdi Tanpinar, Ruth Christie Anthem Press, Anthem cosmopolis writings, 1st, London, 2018
Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar's ‘Five Cities’ was first published in Turkish as ‘Beş Şehir’ in 1946 and revised in 1960. It consists of five essays, each focused on a city significant in Anatolian history and in Tanpinar's emotional life. Part history, part autobiography, part poetic meditation on time and memory, ‘Five Cities’ is Proustian in style, with a tension between a backward-looking melancholy and a concern for the unpredictable future of the author’s country. Comparable to Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk’s ‘Istanbul: Memories of a City’, ‘Five Cities’ emphasizes personal attitudes and reactions but has a wider scope of geography, history and culture.

The Infidels by Joe David Anthem Press, Perseus Books, LLC, London, 2014
The Great War began with two shots: one aimed at the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Hapsburg throne, and the other aimed at his wife, Sophie. What many thought would be just another Balkan squabble quickly transformed into a major war felt around the world. As Europe burst into flames and millions of soldiers began battling the forces of nationalism, the Ottoman Turks joined arms with the Germans and extended the conflict to their longtime enemies, the Russians and Christians. Incited by secular leaders in Constantinople, northwestern Persia became a warzone in which radical religious tribes invaded Christian villages and systematically martyred hundreds of thousands of "infidels" who dared to resist conversion. On a small slice of ancient, isolated land owned by a wealthy Assyrian family, a young Christian girl awakens to the brutal massacre of her race in a war that she is too young to understand. Stripped of her privileged and comfortable existence, pursued by a Muslim governor - a symbol of the rising new world order - and surrounded by hostility and greed, deep-sated hatred and unspeakable horrors, she must somehow come to terms with the nightmare that her life has become.

Ann Loades has been instrumental in bringing forward for the attention of readers in later generations “voices from the past,” notably highlighting the work of pioneering women such as Evelyn Underhill and Dorothy L. Sayers as well as advancing the study of better-known Anglican forebears C. S. Lewis and Austin Farrer―always with her own distinctive concerns. A key interpreter of the Anglican tradition and with a keen eye to ensure the full recognition of women, these studies by Ann Loades are essential reading in Anglican, feminist, and twentieth-century theology.

Changes in Attitudes to Immigrants in Britain, 1841-1921: From Foreigner to Alien (Anthem Studies in British History) Braber, Ben Anthem Press, 2020 nov 25
This book reviews changes in attitudes to immigrants in Britain and the language that was used to put these feelings into words between 1841 and 1921. Using a historical and linguistic method for an analysis of so far for this purpose relatively unused primary sources, it offers novel findings. It has found that changes in the meaning and use of the word alien in Britain coincided during the period between 1841 and 1921 with the expression of changing attitudes to immigrants in this country and the modification of the British variant of the English language. When people in Britain in these years used the term ‘an alien’, they meant most likely a foreigner, stranger, refugee or immigrant. In 1841 an alien denoted a foreigner or a stranger, notably a person residing or working in a country who did not have the nationality or citizenship of that country. However, by 1921 an alien mainly signified an immigrant in Britain – a term which, as this book shows, had in the course of the years since 1841 acquired very negative connotations.

Focusing on the emergence of Christianity and its suppression by the Romans in the first century, To The Death provides a riveting fictional account of the historical beginnings of Christianity. In the first century AD, the Jews of Jerusalem rebelled against Roman occupation. The result was one of the bloodiest wars in history. A million Jews died, and thousands starved to death. In 1500 BC, migrant Jews from Egypt invaded Canaan (Palestine) and murdered the entire population, claiming they were acting on a direct order from their God. At the end of the war, the treasures of the Jewish Temple were displayed in Rome, along with thouasnds of captive Jews who would be sold into slavery to celebrate the Roman victory.

It’s his calling card to the finest academic institutions, but first he has to crack the notational code. At a conference that commemorates the great French medieval composer, Johannes Ockeghem, Andrew must convince Emma Mitchell – the dynamic conductor of the renowned early-music group, Beyond Compère – to share his vision of the composition’s glittering premiere. But who wrote it? The true story is yet to be discovered, hidden in a memoir that describes the treachery of the famous Josquin Desprez. Deftly blending farce with acute knowledge of life as a performer, Donald Greig’s impressive first novel is a thrilling behind-the-scenes tale set in the world of classical music. Rethinking Therapeutic Reading: Lessons from Seneca, Montaigne, Wordsworth and George Eliot (Anthem Studies in Bibliotherapy and Well-Being) Kelda Green Anthem Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), London, UK, 2020
'Rethinking Therapeutic Reading' uses a combination of literary criticism and experimental psychology to examine the ways in which literature can create therapeutic spaces for personal thinking. It reconsiders the role that serious literary reading might play in the real world, reclaiming literature as a vital tool for dealing with human troubles.Part one of the book analyses the work of four representative authors: Seneca, Montaigne, Wordsworth and George Eliot. Part two sets out the results of a series of three practical reading experiments, particularly concerned with reading Wordsworth and George Eliot. Designed to examine what it is that literature can do to and for modern readers, the experiments provide primary evidence to support the argument that serious literary reading has an important and potentially therapeutic function in modern society

Transnational crimes in the Americas : law, policy and institutions Marshall B. Lloyd Anthem Press, Illustrated, 2018
’Transnational Crimes in the Americas’ emphasizes the importance of working within public, international organizations to combat transnational crimes. It documents the role of international institutions within the Americas to form a united effort against the proliferation of illicit drugs, human trafficking, weapons trafficking, money laundering and terrorism. Selected nation-states and regions in the Western Hemisphere are highlighted to illustrate how individual countries have tried a domestic policy of interdiction and failed to curtail transnational organized crime. Whether a nation is struggling to maintain public confidence in its institutions, or has substantial resources to combat crime beyond its jurisdiction, transnational crimes present a formidable challenge in the region. Marshall Lloyd argues in ‘Transnational Crimes in the Americas’ that a regional response is the most viable means to combat transnational crimes. First, he demonstrates that the current Organization of American States (OAS) has led the way to orchestrate a united front against transnational crimes, adapting, modifying and expanding the mission of its existing organs. Moreover, the OAS has achieved some success by incorporating a sustainability model to combat illicit drugs among rural farmers. The analysis indicates that despite financial and institutional obstacles, the organization’s stainability programmes show promise in the global effort to combat drug trafficking in the Americas.  Finally, Lloyd suggests the formation of a regional criminal court to prosecute the more egregious criminal organizations. Establishing an Inter-American Court of Criminal Justice requires some intrusion upon the sovereign powers of OAS members. Unlike the International Court of Criminal Justice, the jurisdiction of a regional tribunal is well established by existing agreements (both international and regional) that have defined transnational crimes discussed in the book. His ideas are timely, thought-provoking ideas that will have a compelling impact on legal and policy decisions about the role of the OAS and other regional organizations to combat what legal scholars have acknowledged is a crisis among all nation-states.

Religion and Contemporary Management : Moses As a Model for Effective Leadership Arthur J. Wolak Anthem Press, an imprint of Wimbledon Publishing, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), New York, 2016
'Leadership' is crucial to contemporary business, politics, and organizations of every type, including the corporate, non-profit, educational, and government sectors. While modern leadership theorists suggest various models, traits, and approaches to leadership behavior that purport novelty, Ecclesiastes just may have been right that 'There is nothing new under the sun'. The biblical figure of Moses - a familiar name both to adherents of the Western religious traditions and to people who are not - provides an exemplary model of effective leadership that is broadly applicable. Moses is depicted in the Bible as exhibiting 'heroic' and 'charismatic' tendencies. He was certainly empathic. Yet Moses also shows 'transactional', 'transformational' and 'visionary' leadership qualities. A leader of good character, Moses exhibits features similar to the Yiddish term, 'mensch' - someone showing responsibility and integrity, knowing right from wrong. Though few might think of Moses as a 'leader' or a 'manager' in the contemporary sense, Moses not only holds a firm place among the most significant leaders in Western civilization but is arguably the quintessential example of leadership from whom much can be learned by people entering and occupying leadership positions. While current leadership and management vocabulary might differ from the Hebrew Bible, many of the traits, behaviors and actions advocated by modern leadership theorists appear to emulate those of Moses. Wolak contrasts contemporary leadership ideas with biblical and rabbinic sources that show Moses' leadership qualities, Moses serves as an ancient model with current relevance for what modern leadership theorists argue make for an effective leader. 'Religion and Contemporary Management' discusses and compares original and critical biblical and rabbinic sources with current business leadership and management literature, revealing what leadership theorists' advocate today largely emulates what the Bible depicts as effective leadership through Moses' example. Hence, Moses' influence on current leadership trends in Western culture appears pervasive, even if contemporary leadership theorists do not typically cite Moses as an important source for leadership precedent.

How transformative innovations shaped the rise of nations : from ancient Rome to modern America Gerard Tellis & Stav Rosenzweig Anthem Press, an imprint of Wimbledon Publishing Company, Illustrated, 2018-05-30
Over the last 2,000 years, critical innovations have transformed small regions into global powers. But these powers have faded when they did not embrace the next big innovation. Gerard J. Tellis and Stav Rosenzweig argue that openness to new ideas and people, empowerment of individuals and competition are key drivers in the development and adoption of transformative innovations. These innovations, in turn, fuel economic growth, national dominance and global leadership. In How Transformative Innovations Shaped the Rise of Nations, Tellis and Rosenzweig examine the transformative qualities of concrete in Rome; swift equine warfare in Mongolia; critical navigational innovations in the golden ages of Chinese, Venetian, Portuguese and Dutch empires; the patent system and steam engine in Britain; and mass production in the United States of America.
