lgli/Misconceptions about the Tuskeg - Daniel Haulman.epub
Misconceptions about the Tuskegee Airmen : refuting myths about America's first Black military pilots Daniel L Haulman University of Georgia Press, Montgomery, 2023
Once an obscure piece of World War II history, the Tuskegee Airmen are now among the most celebrated and documented aviators in military history. With this growth in popularity, however, have come a number of inaccurate stories and assumptions. Misconceptions about the Tuskegee Airmen refutes fifty-five of these myths, correcting the historical record while preserving the Airmen's rightful reputation as excellent servicemen. The myths examined include: the Tuskegee Airmen never losing a bomber to an enemy aircraft; that Lee Archer was an ace; that Roscoe Brown was the first American pilot to shoot down a German jet; that Charles McGee has the highest total combat missions flown; and that Daniel "Chappie" James was the leader of the "Freeman Field Mutiny." Historian Daniel Haulman, an expert on the Airmen with many published books on the subject, conclusively disproves these misconceptions through primary documents like monthly histories, daily narrative mission reports, honor-awarding orders, and reports on missing crews, thereby proving that the Airmen were praiseworthy, even without embellishments to their story.

Midnight Cry: A Shooting on Sand Mountain Lesa Carnes Shaul University of Georgia Press, null, null, 2024
Close to midnight on May 17, 1951, four north Alabama lawmen drove to a bootlegger's home to serve an arrest warrant. Before the clock struck twelve, the bootlegger lay dead in front of the house he shared with his wife and eight children, and three of the four officers were also dead. Afterward, a sixteen-year-old boy would face a series of trials that would divide a county and thrust the state of Alabama into the national spotlight. In this good, old-fashioned, true-crime story, Lesa Carnes Shaul draws on court documents, trial transcripts, newspaper articles, and personal interviews to weave together a rollicking and illuminating tale of murder and revenge. Besides the shooting itself and the subsequent trials, the narrative explores the cultural shifts that occurred after World War II in the United States, the Deep South, and the state of Alabama in particular. Immediately after the war, many southern states, still recovering from the lingering effects of the Great...

upload/newsarch_ebooks/2022/12/10/Afternoons with Harper Lee - Wayne Flynt.epub
Afternoons with Harper Lee Wayne Flynt New South Books, an imprint of The University of Georgia Press, MONTGOMERY, 2022
"Imagine sitting with an esteemed writer on his or her front porch somewhere in the world and swapping life stories. Dr. Wayne Flynt got the opportunity to do just this with Nelle Harper Lee. In a friendship that blossomed over a dozen years starting when Lee relocated back to Alabama after having had a stroke, Flynt and his wife Dartie became regular visitors at the assisted living facility that was Lee's new home. And there the conversation began. It began where it always begins with Southern storytellers, with an invitation to "Come in, sit down, and stay a while." The stories exchanged ranged widely over the topics of Alabama history, Alabama folklore, family genealogy, and American literature, of course. On the way from beginning to end there were many detours: talks about Huntingdon College; The University of Alabama; New York City; the United Kingdom; Garden City, Kansas; and Mobile, Alabama, to name just a few. Wayne and his wife were often joined by Alice Lee, the oldest Lee sister, a living encyclopedia on the subject of family genealogy, and middle sister Louise Lee Conner. The hours spent visiting, in intimate closeness, are still cherished by Wayne Flynt. They yielded revelations large and small, which have been shaped into Afternoons with Harper Lee. Part memoir, part biography, this book offers a unique window into the life and mind and preoccupations of one of America's best-loved writers. Flynt and Harper Lee and her sisters learned a great deal from each other, and though this is not a history book, their shared interest in Alabama and its history made this extraordinary work possible."--Jacket flap

Moonshine Memories Thomas R. Allison New South Books, Montgomery, AL, 2001
Signed and numbered limited edition, leatherette bound with photographs. When Tom Allison became a U.S. revenue agent in 1955 in Anniston, Alabama, he was issued a .38-caliber revolver, a badge, a box of ammunition, and a pair of handcuffs. He had to supply his own holster and a pair of lightweight boots for chasing fleeing suspects through the woods and fields and across the branches of mostly rural counties. He was later transferred to the Montgomery office, where he continued his career of enforcing the laws against illegal whiskey stills. For three decades, Allison and his fellow officers located and staked out stills, caught the "violators" when they could, and broke up their operations. Along the way he saw and heard it all, and his stories of his experiences are as potent as the shine he worked to eliminate. Here are the first-person stories of lawmen, informants, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and, of course, the shiners themselves. Allison's Moonshine Memories is part memoir, part history, part folklore, and thoroughly entertaining.

lgli/Frye Gaillard - The Southernization of America (2022, NewSouth Books).epub
The southernization of America : a story of democracy in the balance Frye Gaillard, Cynthia Tucker NewSouth Books, Montgomery, AL, 2022
Pulitzer Prize-winner Cynthia Tucker and award-winning author Frye Gaillard reflect in a powerful series of essays on the role of the South in America's long descent into Trumpism. In 1974 the great Southern author John Egerton published his seminal work, The Americanization of Dixie: The Southernization of America, reflecting on the double-edged reality of the South becoming more like the rest of the country and vice versa. Tucker and Gaillard dive even deeper into that reality from the time that Egerton published his book until the present. They see the dark side?the morphing of the Southern strategy of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan into the Republican Party of today with its thinly disguised (if indeed it is disguised at all) embrace of white supremacy and the subversion of democratic ideals. They explore the "birtherism" of Donald Trump and the roots of the racial backlash against President Obama; the specter of family separation on our southern border, with its echoes of similar separations in the era of slavery; as well as the rise of the Christian right, the demonstrations in Charlottesville, the death of George Floyd, and the attack on our nation's capital?all of which, they argue, have roots that trace their way to the South. But Tucker and Gaillard see another side too, a legacy rooted in the civil rights years that has given us political leaders like John Lewis, Jimmy Carter, Raphael Warnock, and Stacey Abrams. The authors raise the ironic possibility that the South, regarded by some as the heart of the country's systemic racism, might lead the way on the path to redemption. Tucker and Gaillard, colleagues and frequent collaborators at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, bring a multi-racial perspective and years of political reporting to bear on a critical moment in American history, a time of racial reckoning and of democracy under siege

In the Midst of Life : A Hospice Volunteer's Story Charles, Rose Montgomery: NewSouth Books, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Athens, 2007
In the Midst of Life is a moving, evocatively described narrative of the patients and caregivers Charles Rose encountered as a hospice volunteer. It is also a perceptive account of his own journey into the world of the dying—a journey that in the end brings him, and us, more deeply and compassionately into the transitory world of our own lives.

Overheard in a Drugstore : And Other Poems by Andrew Glaze Montgomery, AL: NewSouth Books, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Athens, 2012
Andrew Glaze's poetry has been described as'funny, quixotic, and very wise,'while writer Norman Rosten once called him'a serious, irreverent poet, capable of setting off fireworks in the museum.'Overheard in a Drugstore continues in that maverick tradition, offering poems that are humorous, affectionate, moving, evocative, and controversial—sometimes simultaneously. From poems such as'Blue Ridge'and'Sunset Rock,'in which he artfully overlaps a current landscape with ghosts of the past, to'Fishermen,'in which he compares writers to anglers aiming to hook the perfect prose, his unique voice paints vivid imagery for the reader.Glaze has been highly praised in the New York Times, nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and honored with awards from Poetry Magazine and the Southeastern Booksellers Association. His first full-length collection, Damned Ugly Children (1966) was named a'Notable Book'by the American Library Association. He is in the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame and is serving as the Eleventh Poet Laureate of Alabama.

The Chairman : The Rise and Betrayal of Jim Greer Peter Golenbock Montgomery: NewSouth Books, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Athens, 2014
The Chairman, a Shakespearean tale of friendship and betrayal that rivals that of Hamlet, is the harrowing story of Jim Greer, a man loyal to a fault to Florida Governor Charlie Crist, his benefactor. Greer trusts Crist to protect him from the onslaught of the Tea Party wing of the party, only to watch as Crist stabs him in the back and helps send him to prison in order to try to save his own political career. It's also a political tell-all, the truth about how wealth begets power in Republican-led state politics. The book details the secret deals, the dirty pool, the payoffs. It's also very personal, an inside look at the brotherly relationship between Greer and Crist, the ruthlessness of potential Presidential candidate Marco Rubio and attorney general Bill McCollum, as well as at every turn political treachery.

The theoretics of love : a novel Taylor, Joe, 1949- author University of Georgia Press, Montgomery, AL, 2019
"Skulls do stare back, don't let anyone kid you." So says Dr. Clarissa Circle, for not one year after graduating from UT and its infamous "Bone Farm" in Knoxville, she attains regional fame by exposing a supposed Native American burial as a not-so-recent murder. Consequently her dissertation gets revamped and published commercially and she gets hired by UK's Physical Anthropology Department northward in Lexington, where she also earns a lucrative retainer as consultant for Fayette County's Metro Police. In the ranks of that same department a mercurial lover appears: a black homicide detective named Willy Cox. Mercurial can run both ways, Clarissa decides, having a fling with an old hippie aptly nicknamed Methuselah, who comes in the picture after a thirty-year-old mass grave containing eight ritualistic murders is unearthed. There were rumors, local historian Methuselah indicates, of a strange campus cult in the early '70s . . . Bang! In Manhattan, when the Twin Towers fall, events cascade. A young woman sneaks into Clarissa's lab to photograph the eight reconstructed death heads during the mesmerizing TV extravaganza of the falling towers. Not-so-passive death threats concerning the eight ritual murders start, which incline Clarissa and Willy to temporarily mend their love life. Methuselah takes up with a young classical guitarist. The odd middle-aged "petite artiste" who's been stalking Clarissa's house to draw endless sketches disappears. A young religious zealot gets committed, then released to haunt the campus and neighborhood in a disturbing fashion. On steep banks by the Kentucky River, a double suicide is discovered—or was it a murder of passion? A drug parole office from Louisville visits to add fuel to the cult rumors—just as he adds fuel to another spat between Clarissa and Willy. In sum, love shifts from requited to unrequited and back and forth, just as deaths mount to shuffle from official suicides to official murders. Love, hate, and unsolved murders are getting a workout in the Bluegrass state.

The nudes of God James Barfoot Montgomery, AL: NewSouth Books, Montgomery, AL, Alabama, 2001
James Barfoot's first collection of poetry, carefully honed and selected from his life's body of work, reveals a fresh perspective on women, sexuality, and divinity. In superbly crafted verse, he explores multiple facets of relationships, sex, the universe, and, of course, God. This volume reveals the author's belief that each time a woman is about to be understood, she offers a new glimpse of her self, another layer of limitless profundity. These poems, many of which are deliciously explicit, reveal the highly principled reverence which underlies Barfoot's central themes.

Civil War buffs will enjoy this historical novel, which uses a range of characters, from politicians to privates to generals to civilians, to explore the motivations behind the war. The climactic scenes take place at the final battle of the war, in Selma, Alabama, in April 1865, where Union general James H. Wilson defeated Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest. To reach that point, first-novelist Jim Harrell goes back to the beginning of the war, introducing characters on both sides whose varying philosophies and motivations reflect the deep internal divisions within the nation. Then, as the war progresses, Harrell's interweaving plotlines show how the South was gradually and relentlessly cornered. Fine period details and interesting characters bring the ruinous history to life.

Century of the death of the rose : selected poems Jorge Carrera Andrade; Steven Ford Brown Montgomery, AL: NewSouth Books, Uncorrected Proof (2.0), Montgomery, AL, ©2002
By the close of the twentieth century, the brilliant poets that had emerged from the Americas included Ruben Dario, Pablo Neruda, Cesar Vallejo, Vicente Huidobro, and Octavio Paz. To this list must be added Jorge Carrera Andrade, an Ecuadorian, who spent his entire adult life traveling as a diplomat, politician, and poet. Despite a brief flurry of attention generated in the United States by his book, Secret Country (New York: MacMillan, 1946), published just after he served as Ecuadorian Consul General to the United States in San Francisco, Andrade has since been forgotten by American anthologists and literary critics. But in fact the late Andrade was a leading figure in Latin American letters. This volume of his poetry was selected and translated by Steven Ford Brown and is presented in both Spanish and English. Its publication coincides with a UNESCO event remembering Andrade.

Charles Darwin (1809-82) changed the world forever with the 1859 publication of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. Charles Darwin: A Celebration of His Life and Legacy is an anthology of critical writings that grew out of a lecture series, hosted by Auburn University, held on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the first edition of his most famous book. Ideas in On the Origin of Species reordered the biological sciences forever, spawned new disciplines including evolutionary psychology, sociobiology, and evolutionary developmental biology, became foundational for modern biomedical research and practice, inspired new literature and literary criticism, were misused by 20th-century eugenicists and social Darwinists, traumatized persons with certain theological views, and continue to alter humankind's view of itself and its place in the world. The 17 contributors to this anthology tell an interdisciplinary story of Charles Darwin the person, Darwin's work and world-altering ideas, and Darwin's legacy. This ebook edition also includes discussion questions for further study and classroom use.

Darwin's Great Idea and Why It Matters James T Bradley NewSouth, Incorporated, Montgomery, AL, 2013
This volume, excerpted from __Charles Darwin: A Celebration of His Life and Legacy__ (NewSouth Books, 2013), deals with society's continuing struggle with biological evolution. James Bradley writes for would-be teachers of evolution, their students, and others with minimal knowledge about evolution but with minds willing to seek. Calling upon thirty-five years of experience teaching about biological evolution and origin of life studies to university students, Bradley distills the overwhelming wealth of information about the topic into what he believes all citizens should know: what evolution is, what evolution is not, and why knowing about evolution matters. He suggests using Plato's __Allegory of the Cave__ as a tool for preparing students to learn about evolution.

They Say the Wind Is Red : The Alabama Choctaw — Lost in Their Own Land Jacqueline Anderson Matte Montgomery, AL: NewSouth Books, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Athens, 2002
They Say the Wind Is Red is the moving story of the Choctaw Indians who managed to stay behind when their tribe was relocated in the 1830s. Throughout the 1800s and 1900s, they had to resist the efforts of unscrupulous government agents to steal their land and resources. But they always maintained their Indian communities—even when government census takers listed them as black or mulatto, if they listed them at all. The detailed saga of the Southwest Alabama Choctaw Indians, They Say the Wind Is Red chronicles a history of pride, endurance, and persistence, in the face of the abhorrent conditions imposed upon the Choctaw by the U.S. government.

The South never plays itself : a film buff's journey through the South on screen Ben Beard University of Georgia Press, Montgomery, AL, 2020
Since The Birth of a Nation became the first Hollywood blockbuster in 1915, movies have struggled to reckon with the American South—as both a place and an idea, a reality and a romance, a lived experience and a bitter legacy. Nearly every major American filmmaker, actor, and screenwriter has worked on a film about the South, from Gone with the Wind to 12 Years a Slave , from Deliverance to Forrest Gump . In The South Never Plays Itself , author and film critic B. W. Beard explores the history of the Deep South on screen, beginning with silent cinema and ending in the streaming era, from President Wilson to President Trump, from musical to comedy to horror to crime to melodrama. Beard's idiosyncratic narrative—part cultural history, part film criticism, part memoir—journeys through genres and eras, issues and regions, smash blockbusters and microbudget indies to explore America's past and troubled present, seen through Hollywood's distorting lens. Opinionated, obsessive, sweeping, often combative, sometimes funny—a wild narrative tumble into culture both high and low—Beard attempts to answer the haunting question: what do movies know about the South that we don't?

Nicaraguan Gringa : Claiming a Home John M. Keith NewSouth, Incorporated, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Athens, 2014
After her father's death, Sarah Rutledge returns from North Carolina to Nicaragua in an attempt to prevent the family's property from being expropriated by the Sandinista government. The novel begins with Sarah's childhood on the coffee farm where her British-American family has lived for almost a century. Natural disasters, civil conflicts, and political changes force her to ponder who belongs in Nicaragua, just where she belongs, to whom she belongs, and what belongs to her. Author John Keith's life was significantly shaped by two social transformations of the twentieth century, the civil rights movement in the United States and the new vision of mission and development by churches in Central America. In Canebrake Beach: A Novella and Four Short Stories (2012) he reflected on the relationships of black and white people in the South over a span of seventy years. In Nicaraguan Gringa: Claiming a Home , he explores the evolving relationships of nations and their citizens as ruling regimes ebb and flow.

Junior Ray : a novella Pritchard, John NewSouth Books, Uncorrected proof, Montgomery, AL, ©2005
This novella takes the reader on a wild ride inside the mind of a Mississippi Delta good-old-boy ex-deputy sheriff who is as vicious and racist as the worst 1950s-'60s stereotypes. Junior Ray Loveblood narrates the story in his own profane, colloquial voice, telling why he hates just about everybody, and why he wants to shoot Leland Shaw, a shell-shocked World War II hero and poet who is hiding in a silo from what he believes are German patrols. Through a series of sleights of hand, misdirections, and near misses, Junior Ray and his sidekick Voyd give a dark tour of the Delta country as they chase their mysterious prey. Junior Ray's thoughts are peppered with excerpts from Shaw's notebooks - sometimes starkly different from Junior Ray's diatribe, sometimes eerily similar - and by the end of the story, it is up to the reader to sort out whose reality is more fantastic, Shaw's or Loveblood's, as the one stalks the other through the pages of this darkly comedic story.

Hank Hung the Moon . . . and Warmed Our Cold, Cold Hearts Rheta Grimsley Johnson Montgomery, AL: NewSouth Books, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Athens, 2012
Nationally syndicated columnist Rheta Grimsley Johnson's Hank Hung the Moon is more of a musical memoir than a biography: the author's evocative and personal stories of 1950s and '60s musical staples'elementary school rhythm bands, British Invasion rock concerts and tear-jerker movie musicals. It was a simpler time when Hank roamed the Earth; the book celebrates a world of 78 rpm records and 5-cent Cokes, with Hank providing the soundtrack and wisdom. A Cajun girl learns to understand English by listening to Hank on the radio. A Hank impersonator works by day at a prison but, by night, makes good use of his college degree in country music. Hank's lost daughter, Jett, devotes her life to embracing the father she never knew. Finally, stories you haven't heard a thousand times before about people who love Hank, some famous, most not. This lively little book uses Hank as metaphor for life. You'll tap your toe and demand an encore

Watermelon Wine : The Spirit of Country Music Frye Gaillard; introduction and listeners' guide by Peter Cooper NEW SOUTH BOOKS MONTGOMERY, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Athens, 2004
Originally published 25 years ago, Watermelon Wine was praised for its honest, unsentimental examination of the compassion as well as the passion behind authentic country music. Author Frye Gaillard looked at the commercialization of the Grand Ole Opry; the tradition-minded rebels such as Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, and Tompall Glaser; the growing divide between country and folk music; how Johnny Cash inspired new songwriters and new ideas; how the changing relationships between men and women were affecting the music; the role of God and gospel; and Southern rock's increasing influence. A quarter-century later, the essays in the book seem prophetic and in many cases have become even more relevant. A new introduction by Nashville music journalist Peter Cooper and a new afterword by the author update the book's themes and show what has happened to its personalities.

Won over : reflections of a federal judge on his journey from Jim Crow Mississippi Alsup, William; Henderson, Thelton Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Montgomery, AL, 2019
What was it like growing up white in Mississippi as the Civil Rights Movement exploded in the 1950s and '60s. How did white children reconciled the decency and fairness taught by their parents with the indecency and unfairness of the Mississippi Way of Life, the euphemism applied to the pervasive Jim Crow. How did the Civil Rights Movement influence white kids coming of age in the most segregated place in America? Won Over , a memoir, examines these questions as it traces the journey of United States District Judge William Alsup, born white in 1945 to hard-working parents in Mississippi. They believed in segregation. But they also taught their children fairness and decency and therein lay the conflict, a struggle at the core of the human predicament in the South. As Won Over recalls near its outset, the author's earliest doubt about the system came at age twelve when what he'd thought stood as an abandoned shack at the bottom of a sand quarry turned out to be a school for black kids, whom we saw playing in the mud outside its door. At the end, Won Over reflects on a 1966 challenge by the author and his college roommate to the Mississippi Speaker Ban, an official rule against any "controversial" speaker coming onto a college campus in Mississippi, a rule used to quash their invitation to the state president of the NAACP to speak at their college, Mississippi State University. After a tense showdown, the roommates won that challenge. In January 1967, Aaron Henry became the first black ever to speak on a white college campus in Mississippi, receiving a standing ovation. The memoir traces the influences that drew the author from traditional Southern attitudes toward a color-blind ideal. Those influences included his older sister, Willanna, his closest circle of friends, a charismatic mentor in college, and the moral force of the Civil Rights Movement. Won Over recounts their steps along that journey — a counter protest to a John Birch Society billboard calling for the impeachment of Chief Justice Earl Warren; meeting personally with the brother of slain leader Medgar Evers to convey condolences; a letter to the editor of the statewide paper on behalf of his circle of friends declaring "We are for civil rights for Negroes"; joining his college roommate in a rally at Tougaloo College to support the Meredith March Against Racism; and going to the Liberty Baptist Church in Chicago to hear Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. exhort the faithful in their summer-long protest against housing and employment discrimination. In 1967, William Alsup went on to Harvard Law School, then to clerk for Justice William O. Douglas. He briefly practiced civil rights law in Mississippi before moving to San Francisco, where he became a trial attorney and, in 1999, received an appointment as United States District Judge.

My journey : a memoir of the first African American to preside over the Alabama Board of Education Ethel Hall with Carmelita J. Bivens Montgomery, AL: NewSouth Books, Montgomery, AL, Alabama, 2010
In this wise, introspective, and touching memoir, Dr. Ethel Hall recounts the little “journeys” throughout her life which prepared her to become the first African American woman elected to the Alabama State Board of Education. Her experiences with racial tension, discrimination, and poverty are interspersed with portraits of the family and love which transformed her from a farmer’s daughter—determined to achieve the higher education others thought to be impossible—to a dedicated mother and educator, and even further to a statewide political leader. Dr. Hall also provides a detailed account of the problems faced—both solved and unsolved—during her more than two decades of service to the Alabama State Board of Education. Despite the difficulties she faced, Dr. Hall’s stories are filled with faith and hope, leaving the reader with memorable anecdotes for their own hardships.

The "Alabama Insert" Richard Dawkins; Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science Richard Dawkins NewSouth Books, Montgomery, AL, ©2013
In this volume, excerpted from Charles Darwin: A Celebration of His Life and Legacy (NewSouth Books, 2013), public educator, author, and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, with characteristic clarity and wit, discusses the basic principles of evolution and responds to creationists' standard arguments against evolutionary theory. Dawkins's essay is a transcript of a lecture he delivered at Auburn University in 1996. While en route to Auburn, Professor Dawkins heard about the "Alabama Insert," a disclaimer of evolution by the Alabama State Board of Education pasted inside the cover of biology textbooks. Dawkins set aside his prepared lecture and extemporaneously critiqued the "Insert." Later he gave permission for a transcript of his talk to be used to further the public understanding of evolution. The 1920s literary magazine __The Fugitive__ transformed Vanderbilt University into the home of New Criticism, spearheaded by a group of young poets. In Fugitive Days, author and professor Gerald Duff recalls meeting the poets, now older and accomplished, including Robert Penn Warren, John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, and Andrew Lytle. In these chance encounters, Duff finds the humanity in each — some approachable, some remote, some lost in the wilds of age or overshadowed by their own legends. Duff takes away with him new understanding of what writers-as-fugitives gain and sacrifice in pursuit of their craft.
