lgli/The Legend of the Albino Farm - Steve Yates.epub
The legend of the Albino Farm : a novel Steve B Yates Unbridled Books : Made available through hoopla, United States, 2017
The Legend of the Albino Farm is a horror story turned inside out. What if a thriving family were saddled with an unshakable spook tale? And what if that lore cursed them with an unending whirlwind of destruction from thrill seekers, partiers, bikers, and Goths? Hettienne Sheehy is about to inherit this devouring legacy. Last child to bear a once golden name, she is heiress to a sprawling farm in the Missouri Ozarks. During summer, childhood idylls in the late 1940s, Hettienne has foreseen all this apocalyptic fury in frightening, mystifying visions. Haunted by a whirling augury, by a hurtful spook tale, and by a property that seems to doom all who would dare own it, in the end, Hettienne will risk everything to save the family she truly loves. The Legend of the Albino Farm has haunted two generations of Sheehys and marred all memory of the family's glory days. Worse, this spooky lore now draws revelers, druggies, motorcycle gangs, hippies, and later Goths to trample the land, set bonfires, and vandalize its structures, all while Hettienne's aged aunts cling to privacy, sanity, and a rapidly deteriorating thirteen-room mansion.. From her youth, throughout her marriage and her rearing of her children, the Legend of the Albino Farm and the curse of the Sheehys drag at her and her family like a vortex. Haunted by a whirling augury, by a hurtful spook tale, and by a relentlessly judgmental Ozarks city, in the end, Hettienne believes she must make decisions that might compromise her family's financial security but will severe them from an ever more dangerous legacy.

The Lighthouse Road : a Novel Peter Geye Unbridled Books, First Trade Paper, 2012
The story moves back and forth in time from the arrival of Thea from her isolated village in arctic Norway in search of a new life in the near wilderness of a small town and logging camp on the shore of Lake Superior to the travails of her orphaned son, Odd, some twenty years later. When Thea’s aunt and uncle do not meet her boat as planned, she’s initially left abandoned with no money or prospects and without speaking the language. Befriended by a local businessman and apothecary with secrets of his own, she obtains work as a cook in the nearby logging camp. While living through one of the coldest and threatening winters in memory, she is raped by an itinerant peddler and petty criminal. She delivers the baby in a blinding snowstorm the next fall, attended by her original benefactor and his “daughter” who is also the town’s surgeon and midwife, but she soon dies of childbirth complications. The apothecary, Grimm, takes the infant into his household and the boy is raised more or less by the entire town, eventually growing up under Grimm’s influence to be a fisherman, smuggler for Grimm’s whiskey trade, and a boat builder. Still, he struggles to find himself and to reconcile the loss of his mother, and he becomes increasingly troubled by Grimm’s criminal enterprises and dirty secrets until an unlikely love affair puts everything on a collision course.

lgli/Janyce Stefan-Cole - The Detective's Garden (2016, ).epub
The Detective's Garden Stefan-Cole, Janyce Unbridled Books, Lakewood, CO, 2016
The Detective's Garden: A Love Story and Meditation on Murder is set in Brooklyn in 1995. Originally from Slovenia, ex-NYPD Homicide Detective Emil Milosec, a man with a past poised to reclaim him is perennially on the outside. Elena, his beauty of a wife, has died, but she has filled pages of letters to him—which he has so far refused to read. Elena always remained elusive to him, and she still is.An ugly discovery among the leafy haven of their backyard garden unsettles the uneasy truce Emil has managed since Elena's death. A lively cast of local characters, a dark history and an international mystery all inform the story. Underpinning events are a heat wave, the Brooklyn housing bubble underway, a gun that goes off, and a smattering of science. A little bit Sophocles, a dash of Shakespeare, and tablespoons of Old Testament go into a brew that is both contemplative and neo-noirish.

The death of Fidel Pérez Huergo, Elizabeth [Lakewood, CO]: Unbridled Books, Lakewood, CO, ©2013
On July 26, 2003, the 50th anniversary of the Moncada Army Barracks raid in Santiago de Cuba, something unexpected happens. When Fidel Pérez and his brother accidentally tumble to their deaths from their Havana balcony, the neighbors’ outcry, “Fidel has fallen,” is misinterpreted by those who hear it. The misinformation quickly ripples outward, and it reawakens the city. Three Cubans in particular are affected by the news—an elderly vagrant Saturnina, Professor Pedro Valle, and his student Camilo—all haunted by the past and now forced to confront a new future, perhaps another revolution. Their stories are beautifully intertwined as they converge in the frantic crowd that gathers in La Plaza de la Revolución. <p>By turns humorous and deeply poignant, <i>The Death of Fidel Pérez</i> reflects on the broken promises of the Cuban Revolution and reveals the heart of a people with a long collective memory.<br> </p>

Madewell Brown (Guadalupe Series, #4) Collignon, Rick, 1948- Denver: Unbridled Books, New York, 2009
<p><P>The enthralling novel called Madewell Brown is made of two stories. <P>The first is that of Rachael, a young African-American woman from Illinois who has been mystified her whole life by the tale of an old man lost a generation ago. The second is the insistent hope in a New Mexican villager named Cipriano, that he might finally discover why his strange and distant father was always so angry, frightened, and alone. <P>This &mdash; the fourth of Collingnon's beloved Guadalupe novels &mdash; is as magical as its predecessors, as emotionally honest, as surprising. And it firmly establishes Rick Collignon as a master American storyteller. <P>Drawn effortlessly forward on Collingnon's direct and haunting prose, we follow Rachael to the village of Guadalupe in search of her grandfather. And we watch as Cipriano tries to make sense of the story his own father tells him about a dead man who had come to the village long ago and did not ever belong there.</p><h3>Publishers Weekly</h3><p><P>In this wheezy, melancholy tale, Collignon returns to the fictional New Mexico town of Guadalupe (from his previous novel, <I>Perdido</I>), this time by way of a young woman named Rachael. Rachael grew up an orphan in South Cairo, Ill., and carries on a grudging yet loving connection with an elderly man named Obie, who tells her about her grandfather (and his childhood friend), Madewell Brown. When Obie dies, he leaves her his memoirs of his and Madewell's glory days on an African-American baseball team. Meanwhile, in Guadalupe, an elderly man tells his son, Cipriano, about a long-ago desert encounter with a strange black man. Cipriano later finds the man's bag-emblazoned with the name Madewell Brown-stashed in the shed and pulls from it an unsent letter, addressed to Obie, which he drops in the mail. From there, the two stories begin to converge to sketch out Madewell's story, punctuated by Obie's too-nostalgic remembrances of baseball games past. It's decent enough, but there's nothing especially memorable about it. <I>(May)</I></P>Copyright &copy; Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.</p>

Freeman Walker: a novel by David Allan Cates Denver, Colo.: Unbridled Books, Denver, Colo, Colorado, 2008
Freeman Walker is a story told by a mulatto slave, Jimmy Gates, freed by his owner-father when he is 7-years-old, separated from his mother and everything he holds dear. After receiving an unforgettable talk by his father about the rules of life he will no doubt discover on his journeys, and a copy of the Declaration of Independence, he is sent to England to get an education. Jimmy, in the first of the novel's great ironies, has had a blissful, loving childhood and never understood he wasn't free until his new "freedom" enslaves him miserably. Despite his loneliness for home, he learns fast and well and makes himself a good and popular student. Four years pass, and while he is waiting for his father to visit for the first time, he learns that his father's ship has sunk and his father has drowned at sea. Bereft of financial support, mourning still his long lost mother and now his father's death, Jimmy is sent to a London workhouse where he spends six years making saddles, reading heroic novels to his companions, being sexually abused by the proprietor, finding the comfort of prostitutes, and discovering the inspirational speeches of an Irish revolutionary named Cornelius O'Keefe, or O'Keefe of the Sword. When he is 18, dreaming himself a warrior and a hero, he returns to the States to rescue his mother. While looking for his mother in northern Virginia-he discovers that if he wears a hat he can pass for white-he gets caught in a major battle. Jimmy is overjoyed to be able to take part, but is soon overwhelmed by its horror. Untrained, and unattached to any unit, he nevertheless has a chance meeting with O'Keefe of the Sword, who is now a Union General leading a brigade of Irishmen. Jimmy saves O'Keefe on the battlefield, but later is captured himself by Confederate forces, and again made a slave, spending the next two years attached to a confederate regiment digging graves. When his unit is overrun and he is found shackled in a root cellar with his friend, a Yankee officer presents to him a terrible choice, stay locked up, or commit an atrocity and go free. He chooses to walk free.He changes his name to Freeman Walker and as he reinvents himself once again and makes his way into the mythic territory of the Great American West, the novel begins to change. He hopes to live peacefully by getting rich, and he does live peacefully and get rich, for a while. But his race catches up again, and he is lynched, and he loses his treasure, and he surrenders to the mud on the side of the road, and looks forward to the coming winter and his own demise. But into the territory that winter rides the new territorial governor, none other than his childhood hero, Cornelius O'Keefe, who the war has turned into a pacifist. Freeman's life changes once more as he becomes O'Keefe's secretary, and the two of them, joined by a half-breed captain named Felix Belly-three outcasts-form the only government in the Territory, a wild and savage place run by vigilantes. Their quixotic attempt to stop the vigilantes from a campaign of terror against the Natives spurs a terrible but noble adventure and brings Freeman a kind of rebirth in which he finally comes to understand the meaning of moral freedom.

The Evolution of Shadows Jason Quinn Malott Unbridled Books, Denver, CO, Colorado, 2009
In July of 1995, the news photographer Gray Banick disappeared into the Bosnian war zone and doing so took away pieces of the hearts of three people who loved him: Emil Todorovic, his interpreter and friend; Jack MacKenzie, his mentor who taught Gray to hold his camera steady between himself and the worst that war presents; and Lian Zhao, who didn't have the strength to love him as he wanted her to. Now, almost five years later, they have gathered in Sarajevo to find out what happened to Gray, the man who had taught them all what love is. Each driven character in this novel believes fully that there is a love strong enough to sustain them, even in the extreme circumstances of war. But each time they have uncovered a glimpse of such a thing, they have failed tragically love itself. Or, to see it another way, this is a novel about how love fails us every time—or almost every time.

lgli/Love Slave - Jennifer Spiegel.epub
Love Slave by Jennifer Spiegel Unbridled Books, 1st print, Cave Creek, AZ, cop. 2012
"I can write the pants off any man," declares Sybil Weatherfield, the plucky hero of Jennifer Spiegel’s Love Slave. A literary novel set in 1995 New York, Love Slave follows Weatherfield and her strange friends as they frustrate chick-lit expectations (though they’re unaware that they’re doing so) in this uproarious, genre-breaking spree. By day Sybil is an office temp, and by night she’s a columnist for New York Shock, a chatty rag in which she writes a column called "Abscess" — a wound that never heals. Her friends include a paper-pusher for a human rights organization, and the lead singer of a local rock band called Glass Half Empty. Full of cultural detail, mid-'90s observations, and early adulthood anxieties, Weatherfield’s story of finding love ultimately casts an ironic eye on what it means to be a love slave.

Hollywood Boulevard Stefan-Cole, Janyce Denver, Colo.: Unbridled Books, First Printing, First Edition, PS, 2012
Ardennes Thrush is an award-winning movie star who suddenly and mysteriously quit acting at the height of her fame. She is in Hollywood now, at the Hotel Muse, visiting her husband Andre, a world-renowned director struggling through his latest film. Ardennes, a contemplative woman, is also something of a voyeur, and as she watches the comings and goings in the hotel she begins to fear that perhaps she is being stalked. Her period of anonymity ends after a box of dead roses is delivered to her suite. When a Beverly Hills detective comes to investigate, a powerful attraction turns unexpectedly unprofessional and quickly carnal. When the stalker turns out to be real, Ardennes's private journey escalates into real danger, and we watch rapt as she searches her past for the answer to how she brought herself here. Hollywood Boulevard is the track of a very real emotional journey. With a deceptively simple style, the novel takes a compassionate look at a complicated character readers wont be able to let go without regret.

You Believers Bradley, Jane Unbridled Books, Cave Creek, Ariz, ©2011
You Believers is a powerful, cathartic story of casual evil and of how the worst things can be faced so that we might not only survive, but grow. A young woman goes missing, and her mother uproots her life to find her daughter. But it is not just the heartbreak or the deep mystery of the hunt for lost loved ones that Bradley so convincingly explores. Rather, with the help of an amazingly dedicated searcher, family and friends somehow learn to move past unspeakable horror and celebrate the tenacity of the human spirit. Offering a vision that is at once ruthless and utterly compassionate, Bradley renders the search for logic, meaning, redemption and even hope in the domino force that is human nature. Part Southern gothic, part crime, part haunting suspense story, You Believers takes us on an infinitely harrowing journey that rewards the reader with insight into how we might endure horrible events with faith, strength, and grace even while it reveals the ripple effects of random violence.

Baseball's no-hit wonders : more than a century of pitching's greatest feats Dirk Lammers; Fay Vincent Unbridled Books : Made available through hoopla, Place of publication not identified, 2016
Baseball's No-Hit Wonders, with a foreword written by formerMajor League Baseball commissioner Fay Vincent, honors such legendarypitchers as Cy Young, Bob Feller, Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax, whileintroducing readers to other eccentrics and one-shot wonders who havethrown no-hitters. The book fleshes out the colorful characters, compelling narratives and statistical oddities from baseball's 294no-hit efforts--as well as the many near misses that are also part ofthe national pastime's storied history. Painstaking research andpersonal interviews have allowed the author to pack great detail into afun, fast-paced take on the game, revealing the stories of the no-hitter thrown by a pitcher on acid, the hitters most adept at breaking upno-hitters and other gems thrown by guys with nicknames of Bumpus, Bobo, Cannonball and Nixey. Even the game's greatest slugger is credited with a partial no-hitter, and all he did was throw a punch! Chaptersdetailing the best no-hitters of all time are interspersed with "Did You Know?" lists that include no-hitters by team, city and day of the week, no-hitters of the Negro Leagues, catchers who caught the most no-nosand the best pitchers not to throw a no-hitter.\*\*Review"I loved reading about all of the no-hitters. There are a lot of thingsthat I had no idea about, like "Hooks" Wiltse also losing his perfectgame in the ninth inning but saving his no-hitter. This is a great bookabout the great history of the game."-- Milt Pappas (1972 no-hitter) "I do think you have a winning idea. This is a book that should sell. BoBelinsky was my favorite, followed by Don Larsen, and the only one I saw in person, Bob Forsch." -- W.P. Kinsella, author of Shoeless Joe, basis for the movie Field of Dreams "It's fantastic. My kinda baseball book. Just the right combo of pure stats, information, obscure history and incisive commentary. I know I'll begoing back to it often for reference (and, hey, maybe a song or 2!)."-- Steve Wynn, singer, songwriter, guitarist for The Baseball Project "As an official scorer, I'm aware of the tension and drama when a pitchertakes a no-hitter into the later innings. In Baseball's No-Hit Wonders,Dirk Lammers has captured this drama and added to it with insights andanalysis for those who achieved this honor. Mixed in with fun facts more than 100 years of no-hitters, this book is entertaining andenlightening."-- Stew Thornley, MLB Official Scorer for Minnesota Twins games About the AuthorDirk Lammers is an award-winning Associated Press journalist whofor years chronicled the New York Mets' 50-year quest for the team'sfirst no-hitter. He has spent more than two decades writing thousands of news stories and features for the AP and Tampa Tribune on a variety of topics including business, politics, technology, sports and entertainment. In 2008, Lammers tapped into his love of baseball to createNoNoHitters.com , a website dedicated to the Mets' seemingly futilequest for its first no-hitter. For the 41⁄2 years between the site'screation and Johan Santana's first Mets no-no in 2012, NoNoHitters.comblossomed into the Internet's online gathering point for all thingsrelated to no-hitters, garnering press coverage in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and more. He lives in Sioux Falls, SD. Fay Vincent served as the eighth Commissioner of Major League Baseball from 1989 through 1992.

The Lighthouse Road (Eide Family, #1) by Peter Geye Center Point Large Print, 1st, First Edition, PS, 2012
Against the wilds of sea and wood, a young immigrant woman settles into life outside Duluth in the 1890s, still shocked at finding herself alone in a new country, abandoned and adrift; in the early 1920s, her orphan son, now grown, falls in love with the one woman he shouldnt and uses his best skills to build them their own small ark to escape. But their pasts travel with them, threatening to capsize even their fragile hope. In this triumphant new novel, Peter Geye has crafted another deeply moving tale of a misbegotten family shaped by the rough landscape in which they live--often at the mercy of wildlife and weather--and by the rough edges of their own breaking hearts.

The coffins of Little Hope : [a novel Schaffert, Timothy Unbridled Books, 1, PS, 2011
Timothy Schaffert has created his most memorable character yet in Essie, an octogenarian obituary writer for her family's small town newspaper. When a young country girl is reported to be missing, perhaps whisked away by an itinerant aerial photographer, Essie stumbles onto the story of her life. Or, it all could be simply a hoax, or a delusion, the child and child-thief invented from the desperate imagination of a lonely, lovelorn woman. Either way, the story of the girl reaches far and wide, igniting controversy, attracting curiosity-seekers and cult worshippers from all over the country to this dying rural town. And then it is revealed that the long awaited final book of an infamous series of YA gothic novels is being secretly printed on the newspaper's presses. The Coffins of Little Hope tells a feisty, energetic story of characters caught in the intricately woven webs of myth, legend and deception even as Schaffert explores with his typical exquisite care and sharp eye the fragility of childhood, the strength of family, the powerful rumor mills of rural America, and the sometimes dramatic effects of pop culture on the way we shape our world.

an Unfinished Score Blackwell, Elise Unbridled Books, Erscheinungsort nicht ermittelbar, c 2010
From Publishers Weekly Blackwell's melodramatic fourth novel dwells on the odd circumstances that befall an unhappily married concert violist. Suzanne learns of the death of Alex Elling, an orchestral conductor and her lover, as she fixes a meal for her stoic husband, Ben, manipulative best friend, Petra, and her young deaf daughter, Adele. Struggling to remain composed, Suzanne later finds solace in her memories and music, though it's difficult to sympathize with her suffering; with so many musicians crowding the narrative, the story sags under the weight of passages filled with musical history and discussions between musicians in Suzanne's quartet. Suzanne continues to keep her love affair a secret, but when Alex's widow, Olivia, begins to call her home with cryptic messages, she fears she could be exposed. Unable to resist the tie to her lover, Suzanne visits Olivia and discovers he had been composing a score for her. In the stilted confrontation that follows, Olivia blackmails Suzanne into completing the score. Though Blackwell (_The Unnatural History of Cypress Parish_) manages a few twists, the frequently overwrought writing is a big turn-off. (Apr.) Copyright В© Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Review An Unfinished Score is not a novel to get lost in. It is a tough novel, well-written, with major and minor rhythms coursing through it to carry the plot. It is broad and narrow at the same time. It is an exploration of grief, the history of music, being an artist, the concept of hearing, and the emotional life of a woman torn between her every day and a fantasy world. The novel quickly establishes its rhythm, starting from the first two lines She hears the words on the radio. It is the radio that announces her lover s death. At times stark, at times labyrinthine, Blackwell s prose works like a symphony some lines seem purposefully disharmonic, as if to add to the uncomfortable, yet familiar, struggle that the protagonist, Suzanne, goes through over the course of the book. By the end of the first chapter, it is more than apparent that the world this novel inhabits is not typical. Suzanne and her husband, Ben, share a home with Suzanne s best friend, Petra, and Petra s young daughter, Adele. Adele is deaf, and Suzanne, Petra, and Ben are all musicians (viola, violin, and cello, respectively). By the end of the first scene of the novel, after Suzanne learns of her lover s death, and the quartet share a relatively uneventful dinner, the reader can cut the tension within their household with a knife. An Unfinished Score begins slowly, exploring the terrain of Suzanne s grief-stricken mind, as she processes the death of her lover, Alex. Alex, a well-known conductor with whom Suzanne has been having an affair for four years, dominates Suzanne s mind and motivation for much of the novel. She holds close, perhaps too close, her memories of him, which in turn impairs her ability to see and her judgment. ... The first section of the book delves deeply into her psyche, moving nonlinearly through Suzanne s life....The second section opens with Suzanne meeting Alex s widow, Olivia, a well-bred and formidable character with revenge to enact on the woman who almost stole her husband. From here, the story becomes a vortex, pulling the reader in, sometimes moving at great speed and disorienting the reader, other times moving carefully over the landscape of creativity, love, heartbreak, loss, and ultimately coming to a crescendo of truth. Though Suzanne dominates the story, the other characters are well-drawn. Petra, an old-fashioned Swedish beauty provides comic relief, and a subtle edge to the story. She feels like she cannot raise Adele alone, and because of this, distances herself from her daughter, leaving Suzanne to stand in as the mother figure. Adele s quiet presence, and the looming possibility of her receiving cochlear implants, constantly evokes the concept of what hearing is. Her frustration at not being able to hear the music her mother and Suzanne play is artfully rendered. ... As for Ben, his presence is more felt than known, and could be likened to an absence as well. He is both there, and not there. The music theme of the novel certainly lends to its success, but at some points, it also seems to hold it back. Petra s endless viola jokes, Suzanne s reliving of each concert hall and concert she sat through with Alex, the histories of composers woven throughout these details sometimes distract from the actual story. A reader with no concept of orchestration, composition, or music theory might find themselves confused by the references. An Unfinished Score is an emotional novel. It is a book that asks for sympathy and contemplation. Exploring the complexity of classical music, the lives that create and perform it, and nothing less complicated than the inner workings of the human heart, the book is ultimately an orchestra of its own, beautifully composed and richly textured. --Newpages.com reviewed by Sara C. Sabbath night in the church of the piranha : new and selected stories Falco, Edward Denver: Unbridled Books, First Printing, First Edition, US, 2005
For a long time now, Edward Falco has quietly established his place among the absolute best American storytellers. Those who havent yet read him dont want to miss this chance. Thats why were so excited to offer the very best of his work, gathered together for the first time, to a wider readership. Falcos stories are unforgettable, dangerous as a high-wire act without a net, filled with dramatic action, and peopled with believable characters challenged by events into making risky moral choices, so emotionally true that readers will carry them around for a long time. His prose is tense, sharp, and beautifully, wonderfully rich. In story after story, Falcos characters find the comfortable order of their lives ambushed by an upswelling of dark forces beyond their control. In order to protect the lives of familylovers, wives, and especially childrenfrom a catastrophe, they often must summon up the personal courage to climb back from their own monsters, to set aside old, private scars. The decisions they make reveal their bonds, the set of their hearts, and the harsh nature of the culture we all live in today. If someone out there could write the contemporary counterpart to Flannery OConoors classic A Good Man is Hard to Find, it would be Falco. His are good, old-fashioned, hard-to-find stories set way out there on the edge.

Taroko Gorge Jacob Ritari Unbridled Books : Made available through hoopla, 1st ed, Denver, 2010
<p>A disillusioned and raggedy American reporter and his drunken photojournalist partner are the last to see three Japanese schoolgirls who disappear into Taroko Gorge, Taiwan's largest national park. The journalists-who are themselves suspects- investigate the disappearance along with the girls' homeroom teacher, their bickering classmates, and a seasoned and wary Taiwanese detective. The conflicts between them-complicated by the outrageousness of the photographer and the raging hormones of the young-raise questions of personal responsibility, truthfulness, and guarded self-interest. The world and its dangers-both natural and interpersonal-are real, changing, and violently pressing. And the emotions that churn in dark rooms overnight as the players gather in the park visitors' center are as intense as in any closet drama. There's enough action and furor here to keep readers turning the pages, and the cultural revelations of the story suggest that the human need for mystery outweighs the desire for answers.</p><h3>Publishers Weekly</h3><p>Two drunken Americans stumble into trouble in Taiwan in Ritari's uneven debut. Peter Neils, a jaded middle-aged journalist, and Josh Pickett, a young photographer with half-baked Buddhist pretensions, are on assignment in Taiwan and, on an off day, take a pleasure trip to Taroko Gorge. While enjoying a beer-fueled jaunt through the canyon, the men cross paths with three singing Japanese girls who have broken away from the rest of their class, which has traveled to Taiwan on a senior trip. When the girls don't meet up with the rest of the class at the appointed time, Peter and Pickett volunteer to stay and help the despondent teacher search for his missing students. Add to the mix a small group of students who decide to stay at the gorge, the shifting suspicions of a hard-boiled detective, and a typhoon, and the narrative becomes quite tense. Narration duties are shared by several characters, but the older characters don't work as well--Peter's crustiness, for instance, is not quite convincing. The atmosphere is nicely done, but the big reveal is a let down. (July)</p>

Shimmer [electronic resource] Barnes, Eric (Eric Barnes) Lakewood: Unbridled Books, Lakewood, New York State, 2009
<p>In just three years, CEO Robbie Case has grown Core Communications, a data technology company, from 30 people to over 5,000. Now a $20 billion company made legendary by its sudden success, Core is based on a technology no other company can come close to copying, a revolutionary breakthrough known as drawing blood from a mainframe. And Robbie, its 35-year-old CEO, is acclaimed worldwide for his vision, leadership and wealth. Except that all of it is based on a lie. The technology doesn't work, the finances are built on a Ponzi scheme of stock sales and shell corporations, and Robbie is struggling to keep the company alive, to protect the friends who work for him and all that they've built. Each day, Robbie tries to push the catastrophe back a little further, while his employees believe that they are all moving closer to grace, the day their stock options vest, when they will be made rich for their faith and loyalty and hard work. The details of the lie are all keyed into a shadowy interface that Robbie calls Shimmer, an omniscient mainframe that hides itself, calculates its own collapse, threatens to outsmart its creator and to reveal the corporation's illegal, fragile underpinnings. Shimmer is the story of a high-tech crusade nearing its end. The shell game Robbie has created is finally running out of room. And Robbie is the only one who knows or who has a chance to make things right. And Robbie is the only one who knows or who has a chance to make things right. Or is he?</p> <h3>Publishers Weekly</h3> <p>This topical fiction debut from Memphis news publisher Barnes is a cautionary thriller about ambition and corruption in corporate America. Robbie Case, the 35-year-old CEO (and largest shareholder) of Core Communications has managed to grow the business from 30 employees to more than 5,000 in three short years. But his $20 billion company, linking mainframe computers worldwide to the Internet backbone, is built on faulty technology, false promises and questionable finances. Weary of the day when everything inevitably unravels, Case's slow (but accelerating) downward spiral drives the narrative through a number of timely plots, including Ponzi schemes and toxic assets: The people who worked here, the companies we acquired, the stock we sold-all of it was an unseen disease. Readers may find it difficult, if not impossible, to empathize with Case, but the corporate intrigue should hook anyone fascinated by the collapse of Wall Street and the crimes of Bernie Madoff. <BR>Copyright &copy; Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. You Believers Jane Bradley Unbridled Books, [Cave Creek, Ariz.], 2011

A geography of secrets : a novel Frederick Reuss Unbridled Books, [Columbia, MO], Missouri, 2010
From Booklist This is a tale of two men connected only by different secrets. Noel Leonard works for the Defense Intelligence Agency, analyzing satellite images to map targets in the Global War on Terror. Not even his wife knows what he does. Then, when he learns that his error has caused a school in Afghanistan to be atomized, he realizes how heavily secrets weigh on his and his family’s lives. A parallel plot concerns another man, unnamed, who is a mapmaker and comes to suspect that his late father’s foreign-service career also harbors secrets. He travels to Europe to uncover them. Deeply evocative, Reuss’ novel offers a vivid portrayal of the lives and doubts of its protagonists. It is a confusing and constantly obfuscating world, characterized by the mind-numbing nomenclature of weapons systems; by what Reuss calls bureaucratic jujitsu; and by the government’s penchant for secrets masked by rhetoric about “transparency.” All that cloudiness is contrasted by the acute awareness Noel and the mapmaker have for their surroundings. An often beautiful but challenging book that will engage thoughtful readers with both the author’s characters and his ideas. --Thomas Gaughan Review a thoughtful, beautifully written novel by Washington writer Frederick Reuss that tells the story of two men -- a defense analyst and a mapmaker -- and their struggle with the secrets that define them. and A Geography of Secrets has the texture and snap of a modern-day Graham Greene novel, painting a world in which even the smallest choices have devastating consequences -- and where, as one character tells us, Secrets don't keep, they putrefy. --The Washington Post fiction,Thrillers,Psychological,Political,Espionage,Psychological Fiction,Secrets,War Victims,United States - Officials and Employees,Cartographers,Secrecy

Sympathy for Enoch, a hitchhiking dwarf, disrupts her orderly plans. In a separate voyage, Figman, an insurance claims adjuster on the run, relocates to New Mexico after surviving a lethal car crash that results in an unfair lawsuit against him. Now prone to migraines and the conviction that he is dying, Figman embarks on new adventures. Late in the novel, these two distinct love stories converge on a highway in near collision.

An Unfinished Score Elise Blackwell Unbridled Books, Erscheinungsort nicht ermittelbar, c 2010
EDITORIAL REVIEW: As she prepares dinner for her husband and their extended family, Suzanne hears on the radio that a jetliner has crashed and her lover is dead. Alex Elling was a renowned orchestra conductor. Suzanne is a concert violist, long unsatisfied with her marriage to a composer whose music turns emotion into thought. Now, more alone than she s ever been, she must grieve secretly. But as complex as that effort is, it pales with the arrival of Alex s widow, who blackmails her into completing the score for Alex s unfinished viola concerto. As Suzanne struggles to keep her double life a secret from her husband, from her best friend, and from the other members of her quartet, she is consumed by memories of a rich love affair saturated with music. Increasingly manipulated by her lover s widow and tormented by the concerto s many layers, Suzanne realizes she may lose everything she s spent her life working for. A story of love, loss, sex, class, and betrayal, this psychologically compelling novel explores the ways that artists lives and work interact, the nature of relationships among women as friends and competitors, and what it means to make a life of art.

How can a 19-year-old, mixed-race girl who grew up in a crack house and is now pregnant be so innocent? Yslea is full of contradictions, though, seeming both young and old, innocent and wise. Her spirit is surprising, given all the pain she has endured, and that's the counterpoint this story offers?while she sees pain and suffering all around her, Yslea overcomes in her own quiet way. What Yslea struggles with is expressing her thoughts. And she wonders if she will have something of substance to say to her baby. It's the baby growing inside her that begins to wake her up, that causes her to start thinking about things in a different way. Yslea drifts into the lives of four people who occupy three dilapidated row houses along the train tracks outside of Memphis: "The way their three little row houses sort of leaned in toward each other and the way the paint peeled and some of the windows were covered with cardboard, the row might as easily have been empty."

Fear itself Lawrence, Candida Denver, Colo.: Unbridled Books, 1st Edition, First Edition, US, 2004
In light of the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan, the remarkable personal story that comprises Fear Itself becomes a cautionary tale. Unwittingly exposed to low-level radiation in the 1940s, Candida Lawrence has lived courageously with its effects throughout her life. Fear Itself traces her years struggling to have a child and her slow waking to the secrets that governments and institutions withheld from the women of her generation. The task for herand for women who have shared her experiencehas always been to believe herself into wholeness and to survive her losses and her illnesses until there is nothing left to fear. As always, Lawrences writing is filled with smart, gentle anger, sweet sadness and the most private sense of what is vital and important. In Fear Itself, Lawrences deeply felt remembrances grant us an honest account of what it is to live in an unstable world. It is a truly personal account that sheds wide light on the worlds ongoing nuclear decisions. What personal life story could be more timely?

Angel and Apostle Noyes, Deborah; Hawthorne, Nathaniel, 1804-1864. Scarlet letter Denver, Colo.: Unbridled Books, Denver, Colo, Colorado, 2005
At the end of Nathaniel Hawthornes classic novel, The Scarlet Letter, we know that Pearl, the elf-child daughter of Hester Prynne, is somewhere in Europe, comfortable, well set, a mother herself now. But it could not have been easy for her to arrive at such a place, when she begins life as the bastard child of a woman publicly humiliated, again and again, in an unrelentingly judgmental Puritan world. With a brilliant and authentic sense of that time and place, Deborah Noyes envisions the path Pearl takes to make herself whole and to carve her place in the New World. Beautifully written with boundless compassion, Angel and Apostle is a heart-rending and imaginative debut in which Noyes masterfully makes Hawthornes character her own.

The death of Fidel Pérez Elizabeth Huergo Unbridled Books, Lakewood, CO, ©2013
On July 26, 2003, the 50th anniversary of the Moncada Army Barracks raid that sparked the Cuban revolution, something unexpected happens. When Fidel Pérez and his brother accidentally tumble to their deaths from their Havana balcony, the neighbors' outcry, "Fidel has fallen!" is misinterpreted by those who hear it. That wishful mistake quickly ripples outward on the running cries of the people, and it gloriously reawakens a suppressed city. Three Habaneros in particular are affected by the news: an elderly street visionary named Saturnina, the remorseful Professor Pedro Valle, and his impressionable firebrand of a student, Camilo. All three are haunted by the past and now, once again, are made to confront a new future, perhaps another revolution. Their stories--so real, distressing and insuppressible--are beautifully braided into new hope as they converge in the frantic crowd that gathers in La Plaza de la Revolución.

The Islands of Divine Music by John Addiego Addiego, John Unbridled Books, Denver, Colorado, 2008
The Islands of Divine Music is a novel of five generations of an Italian-American family finding its place in the New World. Against a backdrop of Immigration, Prohibition, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and the new millennium, five generations of the Verbicaro family make their way from Southern Italy to San Francisco as each character brushes up against some aspect of the divine. The family matriarch is Rosari, a little girl whose family flees Italy because her prodigality is exploited by illiterate kidnappers. After her beautiful, psychotic mother’s suicide, the girl and her despondent father come to San Francisco, where she meets the man she’ll marry, a handsome, fiercely strong peasant named Giuseppe Verbicaro. The twelve linked stories of The Islands of Divine Music are portraits of family members whose lives are interwoven in one narrative that spans 100 years.Rosari and Giuseppe’s oldest son, Narciso, a handsome and dim-witted dandy, barely evades death and the stain of organized crime by his simple-minded innocence and luck, while his passionate brother Ludovico, a talented third baseman in the old San Francisco minor leagues, falls prey to the illicit dreams of a wise guy from the Gambino family. His scheme to smuggle Cuban cigars to the San Francisco Bay nearly ends in drowning but leads to a kind of salvation.Their youngest brother, Joe, a brilliant child and shrewd businessman, is ashamed of his ethnicity and, in particular, his father. This is due in part to the fact that Giuseppe, wandering North Beach, believes that God directs him to marry a teen-aged, pregnant Mexican prostitute named Maria. Further senility, faith, or vermouth convinces the old man that Maria’s child, Jesus, is the product of an immaculate conception. The event is both a family disgrace and a bizarre blessing. The child’s life and tragic death come to have a profound effect on Giuseppe’s progeny, particularly Joe’s children: Penelope, who flees the country following involvement in deadly anti-Vietnam War activities, and her brothers Paulie and Angelo, who are inspired by the young Jesus to embark upon a quest of several thousand miles to recover the family’s lost and most prized spiritual treasures.
