Electioneering and propaganda in Ireland, 1917-21 : votes, violence and victory Callinan, Elaine, author Dublin: Four Courts Press Ltd., Dublin, 2020
262 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates : 24 cm This book provides an illuminating and unique analysis of the political rivalry between all the major parties during Ireland?s revolutionary years. Politicians, propagandists and their voluntary supporters instigated forceful election campaigns to promote ideologies and influence the minds of ordinary people. The goal was victory at the ballot box during the by-elections, general elections and local government elections of this era. Callinan places her study within the wider contexts of the modernization of propaganda during the Great War and the expansion of consumerism to conduct an examination of election activity? from candidate selection and fundraising to door-to-door canvassing, and everything in between. Running alongside war and revolution were the political struggles, and they equalled any of the military upheavals that transformed politics in Ireland Includes bibliographical references (pages 229-243) and index

Sport and leisure in the Irish and British country house Terence A. M Dooley; Christopher Ridgway; National University of Ireland, Maynooth Four Courts Press Ltd, Dublin ; Chicago, IL, 2019
Sir Shane Leslie once wrote that 'Country life was entirely organized to give nobility and gentry and demi-gentry a good time.' Throughout Ireland and Britain the country house was a centre of hospitality, entertainment and leisure, with the hosting of house parties, soirees and balls. Pastimes included photography, painting, astronomy and taxidermy. Outdoors the parkland was used for a variety of sporting activities including archery, cricket, croquet and shooting, as well as local sports events, and beyond the demesne activities included hunting, horse racing and yachting. In Ireland demesne lands were developed as golf courses and estates offered land to the nationalist-dominated Gaelic Athletic Association for football and hurling. This volume provides fresh and original insights into how leisure and sport underpinned the social hierarchy of country houses and their local communities in Ireland and Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Making of Medieval Derry Ciarán J. Devlin Four Courts Press Ltd, Oct 26, 2018
This new paperback edition of Ciarán J. Devlin’s The Making of Medieval Derry features an extensive range of indexes, prepared by Nollaig Ó Muraíle, that did not feature in the hardback edition. The two most important are of personal names and surnames, and of names of places and population-groups. It is a book that is a tale of saints and sinners, of churchmen and warlords, of scholars and craftsmen, of Derry itself as sacred city, as frontier citadel, as royal capital and episcopal see.

The Murders at Wildgoose Lodge : Agrarian Crime and Punishment in Pre-Famine Ireland Terence A. M. Dooley Four Courts Press Ltd, Vearsa, Dublin, 2008
On the night of 29–30 October 1816 eight people were murdered by burning to death in a house known as Wildgoose Lodge in a remote part of County Louth, four miles from Ardee, nine miles from Dundalk and four miles from Carickmacross in County Monaghan. The perpetrators, who all belonged to a local agrarian secret society, were avenging three of their comrades hanged for a raid on the Lodge the previous April. Following the murders, the local community closed ranks. For months the authorities failed to arrest anyone. Then the state administration – in the form of Sir Robert Peel and Dublin Castle – took over. As a result of a combination of collusion, corruption and the use of paid informers, eighteen local men were tried and hanged. At least half of these men were innocent.

The Catholic Church and the Campaign for Emancipation in Ireland and England Ambrose Macaulay Dublin, Ireland: Four Courts Press, Dublin, Ireland, 2016
La 4e de couverture indique : "Catholics in Ireland and England campaigning for relief from the penal laws, and later, for emancipation, were obliged to deal with the Holy See and the governments in Dublin and London. In return for concessions, the governments required them to provide 'securities' in the form of oaths that included allegiance to King George III and his successors and a rejection of the alleged 'claims' of the papacy which could be used to the detriment of the lawful authority of the British crown. The crown also sought the right to veto candidates for the episcopate whom it deemed unsuitable. These demands met with varying responses from the bishops of Ireland, the vicars apostolic of England, the Catholic laity in Ireland and England and the Holy See. Differences of opinion emerged between the conservative aristocrats and gentry in England, who were keen to take their seats in parliament, and the middle class activists in Ireland, who opposed the interference of the state in their religious affairs. This study examines these issues and the complex relationships between the Holy See, the bishops, the vicars apostolic and the Catholic committees."

Early Irish Kingship and Succession Bart Jaski Four Courts Press Ltd, International Specialized Book Services, Dublin, Ireland, 2013
First published 2000. Paperback edition 2013. Early medieval Ireland was ruled by a large number of lords, kings, and overkings. In a complicated network of affiliations, the Irish kings and the dynasties to which they belonged played a never-ending game of prevail or perish. Most kings had to deal with jealous relatives, unruly sons, dissatisfied noblemen, and ambitious overkings. On the sideline, clerics and poets were keeping a critical eye on their rule. On the basis of a wide range of written sources (laws, sagas, poetry, annals, genealogy, hagiography), 'Early Irish Kingship and Succession' provides new insights about the place of lords and kings in early Irish society. The book analyzes the relationship with their subjects, by which means they ruled, and their strategies of survival in a competitive society. This is set in a context of the early Irish ideology of rulership, which combined Celtic ideas about sacral kingship with Christian concepts about proper behavior and heavenly punishment. A lord or king had to be qualified for his office. Considerations - such as descent, seniority, dignity, wealth, supporters, and physical and mental capacities - were all taken into account when a new lord or king was chosen. This study re-evaluates the rule of succession, its origins, and its expression in narrative literature, and it examines the meaning of the kingship of Tara and the titles rigdamna and tanaise rig. It sketches the background of the medieval Irish polity, with its expanding and fragmenting dynasties, and it explains why none ever gained permanent rule over the whole island.

The Donegal plantation and the Tír Chonaill Irish, 1610-1710 : Maynooth Studies in Local History Number 93 Darren Mcgettigan Four Courts Press Ltd, Maynooth studies in local history -- no. 93, Dublin, Ireland, Ireland, 2010
This book is a Short Study of how the plantation of Ulster impacted on the Gaelic Irish lordship of Tir Chonaill, transforming it within the century after the year 1610, from a powerful autonomous lordship, with a warlike population, into a quiet and well-settled territory, albeit with a still largely unplanted and Gaelic western seaboard in 1710. County Donegal was to see the building of the most successfully planted area of the entire official Ulster plantation. The settlers in the county were led by the Lowland Scots, mostly from Ayrshire. This study analyzes how the Donegal plantation grew and consolidated itself throughout the seventeenth century, helped in large measure by the manner in which the Gaelic Irish population of Donegal became isolated in the west of the county, where it had a development which was almost separate and distinct from the Gaelic Irish in the rest of the province. The importance of the exiled Gaelic nobility of Tir Chonaill, in Spain, Rome and Spanish Flanders, throughout the seventeenth century, is also discussed as is the great flourishing of Gaelic scholarship in Donegal and amongst the Donegal Franciscans at Louvain in the first decades after the plantation.

Edmund Rice And The First Christian Brothers Keogh, Dáire. Four Courts Press Ltd, Dublin, Portland, OR, Ireland, 2008
In 1944, W.T. Cosgrave described the Christian Brothers as 'Ireland's gift to civilization'. More recently, a former government minister called them 'a shower of savage bastards'. This history aims to get beyond these stereotypical representations of Edmund Rice and the first generation Christian Brothers, to see them as they saw themselves and were understood by their contemporaries. It goes beyond hagiography, and interprets the Brothers within context, against the background of Catholic Emancipation, the modernization of Irish society and the fashioning of the Church according to the norms of the Council of Trent.

William O'Brien 1881-1968 : socialist, republican, Dáil deputy, editor, and trade union leader Morrissey, Thomas J. Four Courts Press Ltd, Dublin, cop. 2007
This is an overdue first biography of one of the most influential figures in Irish Labour in the first half of the twentieth century. O'Brien was a delegate to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions for more than thirty years and had the distinction of being four times president of Congress. His name is mainly associated with that of Ireland's then-largest trade union, the ITGWU, which he helped to build after 1916 and concerning which there arose his celebrated clash with Jim Larkin, O'Brien held the position of General Secretary for over twenty years.

The Templars, the witch, and the wild Irish : vengeance and heresy in Medieval Ireland Maeve Brigid Callan Cornell University Press, Ithaca, New York State, 2015
"Early medieval Ireland is remembered as the "Land of Saints and Scholars," due to the distinctive devotion to Christian faith and learning that permeated its culture. As early as the seventh century, however, questions were raised about Irish orthodoxy, primarily concerning Easter observances. Yet heresy trials did not occur in Ireland until significantly later, long after allegations of Irish apostasy from Christianity had sanctioned the English invasion of Ireland. In The Templars, the Witch, and the Wild Irish, Maeve Brigid Callan analyzes Ireland's medieval heresy trials, which all occurred in the volatile fourteenth century. These include the celebrated case of Alice Kyteler and her associates, prosecuted by Richard de Ledrede, bishop of Ossory, in 1324. This trial marks the dawn of the "devil-worshipping witch" in European prosecutions, with Ireland an unexpected birthplace"--

Imagining Alternative Irelands in 1912 : Cultural Discourse in the Periodical Press Ward, Brian, author Dublin, Ireland: Four Courts Press, International Specialized Book Services, Dublin, Ireland, 2017
In pre-independence Ireland, there was not just one potential home rule nation, but rather a multitude of idealized Irelands, and journalists sought to promote their versions of the future to their readers. This work examines Irish periodicals as a network of ideas that played a vital role as a space for public debate in the year of home rule. Through periodicals, writers and editors debated religion, gender, nationalism, philology and race, and promoted their visions of a new Ireland. Nationalists, unionists, suffragists, syndicalists, theosophists and other ideologues derided their opponents and upheld their alternative Irelands. Exploring reactions towards subjects such as sport, music, literature, censorship and race provides us with a greater understanding of how post-independence Ireland was shaped by the debates of 1912. [Subject: Irish Studies, History, Irish Periodicals, Irish Media, Irish Nationalism]

Moygara Castle, County Sligo and the O’Garas of Coolavin : A History Kieran O'Conor (editor) Four Courts Press Ltd, International Specialized Book Services, Portland, 2024
Moygara Castle, with its four towers, gatehouse, and high curtain walls, is one of the most impressive masonry-built monuments in north Connacht. Constructed in the late fourteenth/early fifteenth century by the O'Garas, the castle functioned as a centre of their lordship of Coolavin. This study of Moygara Castle marshals various fields of expertise— history, archaeology, architecture, geography, genealogy, geophysical survey and DNA analysis— to provide much-needed information about life in later-medieval Gaelic Ireland.

Magic Lantern, Panorama And Moving Picture Shows In Ireland, 1786-1909 Kevin Rockett and Emer Rockett Four Courts Press Ltd, Dublin, Ireland, Ireland, 2011
This book is the first volume in a two-volume set on the history of cinema in Ireland from the 18th century to the present day (the second companion volume is titled Film Exhibition and Distribution in Ireland, 1909-2010). What the book demonstrates is that prior to cinema there were already huge numbers of people in Ireland, from all classes, who regularly enjoyed proto-cinematic experiences through such entertainments as the magic lantern, or slide projector; the immersive large-scale paintings known as panoramas; and tableaux vivants, or theatrical-posed static representations of paintings, statues, and events. Without these entertainments - many developed by Irish inventors and pioneers - not only would cinema's moving-pictures have been unimaginable, but so, too, would the cinema space itself and the distribution of film. Ultimately, the book is offered as a contribution towards a deeper understanding of popular visual culture (and its intersection with science) in Ireland from the 18th-century onwards. *** "Kevin Rockett and Emer Rockett's book is a richly researched, engaging...picture of visual and optical entertainments in Ireland, ranging from the first phantasmagoria shows in the 1790s to the establishment of the first purpose-built cinemas....The authors build on recent work influenced by the idea that the site of an exhibition helped determine not only how it took place, but the meanings it produced and the experience of its audience." - Victorian Studies, Vol. 56, No. 1, Autumn 2014????

Dublin from 1970 to 1990: The City Transformed (The Making of Dublin) Joseph Brady Four Courts Press Ltd, The making of Dublin City, Dublin, 2022
Dublins footprint grew steadily during the 1970s with housing transforming the landscape of the west of the city, especially in Tallaght, Clondalkin, and Blanchardstown. It was a time of change with the dominance of the city centre increasingly challenged by suburban shopping centres as Dubliners embraced the freedom offered by the motor car. Cars demanded more and bigger roads but it was realized that Dublin had to control rather than accommodate these demands. The suburban trend in housing, shopping, and jobs made the problem of decline and decay in the city centre even more acute. There was much talk about what needed to be done but little happened until the latter years of the 1980s. When change came it was dramatic and both the social geography of the city centre and its appearance were transformed in less than five years. The urban environment was given greater attention, largely because the issues could no longer be avoided. The Liffey stink was finally tamed after a century or more of complaints and Dubliners had to say farewell to open coal fires. Some things never changed! The problem of how to manage the city remained as intractable as ever despite significant changes in local government structures and the public housing need remained acute.

Ireland 1916-2016: the promise and challenge of national sovereignty = dóchas agus dúshlan na ceannasachta náisiúnta Boylan, Thomas A.; National University of Ireland, Galway; Canny, Nicholas P.; Harris, Mary Four Courts Press Ltd, International Specialized Book Services, Dublin, Ireland, 2017
In this conference volume, six distinguished scholars of Irish birth or descent-Philip Pettit, Roy Foster, Kevin O'Rourke, Clair Wills, Louise Richardson and Brendan O'Leary-who hold senior positions at some of the world's leading universities, reflect on what the ambitions and achievements of the men and women who supported the Rising of 1916 have meant to succeeding generations of Irish people at home and abroad. More specifically, they consider the theme of the conference from a number of broad perspectives including: the doctrines of classical republicanism and liberalism; the historical contextualization of the major changes over the last century; the economic fortunes, failures and achievements of the new independent state; the cultural representation and interpretation of our post-independent experience; the role of current and future university education in Ireland; and the major challenges Ireland is now facing in a rapidly changing and globalized world. Medieval Dublin XVIII: Proceedings of the Friends of Medieval Dublin Symposium 2016 (17) Seán Duffy; Friends of Medieval Dublin. Symposium Four Courts Press Ltd, International Specialized Book Services, Portland, 2021
This volume contains a wealth of new research on Dublin’s medieval past, including paired papers by Joseph Harbison and Rene Gapert that re-examine skulls found on the site of the Hospital of St John the Baptist, Thomas Street. Alan Hayden reports on his excavation of property plots fronting onto Kevin Street and New Street and what they tell us about the supposed fourteenth-century decline of Dublin, and Aisling Collins explains the significant findings from the dig of the church and graveyard at St James’s. Antoine Giacometti examines a medieval tanning quarter that showcases leatherworking and shoemaking in medieval Dublin, complementing work by John Nicholl that analyses footwear styles in the late medieval city based on evidence excavated from Chancery Lane. This aspect of life is illustrated too in the findings of Paul Duffy’s excavations in Thomas Street, which reveal a great deal about crafts in the western suburb of medieval Dublin. Franc Myles reports on the findings of his excavation at Keysar’s Lane beside St Audeon’s church in High Street, including some fascinatingly decorated medieval floor tiles; Jon Stirland reports on the discovery of two parallel ditches of possible early medieval/medieval date located to the rear of nos 19–22 Aungier Street; and Edmond O’Donovan describes his discoveries while excavating in the internal courtyard at the site of the Bank of Ireland at College Green, marked on Speed’s 1610 map of Dublin as ‘the hospital.’ Historical papers include Denis Casey’s analysis of Dublin’s economy in its twelfth-century Irish context and Brian Coleman’s study of taxation and resistance in fifteenth-century Dublin. Thomas W. Smith shines light on papal provisions to ecclesiastical benefices in thirteenth-century Dublin, while Stephen Hewer examines the oldest surviving original court roll of the Dublin bench, dating from 1290.

The Reminiscences of Ignatius O'Brien, Lord Chancellor of Ireland, 1913–1921 : A Life in Cork, Dublin and Westminster Patrick Maume; Daire Hogan Dublin: Four Courts Press, in association with the Irish Legal History Society, International Specialized Book Services, Dublin, 2021
Ignatius O'Brien was the youngest son of a struggling Cork business family. After somewhat unhappy experiences at a Cork Vincentian school and the Catholic University of Ireland, he studied to become a barrister while supporting himself as a reporter on Dublin newspapers. Over time he built up a reputation in property and commercial law, and an ultimately successful career led to him being appointed a law officer and later lord chancellor under the post-1906 Liberal governments. He avoided party politics, but was a moderate home ruler who attributed the troubles besetting relations between Britain and Ireland to a failure to implement moderate reforms in time. After being created Baron Shandon on his removal as lord chancellor, he moved to England, where as a member of the House of Lords he was involved in various peace initiatives. His reminiscences of and reflections on the relatively self-contained world of mid-Victorian Cork, of student and journalistic work and play in Land War Dublin, of the struggles of an aspiring barrister on circuit, and of the declining years of Dublin Castle provide new insights into Irish life in the closing decades of the union. He also gives his impressions of prominent contemporaries, including Charles Stewart Parnell, Edward Carson, and Lord Chief Justice Peter O'Brien ('Peter the Packer'). The publication by the Irish Legal History Society of this important memoir is accompanied by detailed notes and commentaries on its legal and political context by Daire Hogan and Patrick Maume.

˜Theœ Early Finn Cycle Kevin Murray Four Courts Press Ltd, International Specialized Book Services, Dublin, Ireland, 2017
The Finn (or Fenian) Cycle (fianaigecht) is classified by modern scholarship as one of four medieval Irish literary cycles along with the Ulster Cycle, the Cycle of Historical Tales (or Cycles of the Kings) and the Mythological Cycle. It is primarily composed of material dealing with the legendary character Finn mac Cumaill, his warrior band (fian), his son Oisin, and his grandson Oscar. In a fashion recalling the expansion of the Arthurian legend throughout Britain and Europe, the traditions centered on Finn grew from localized beginnings to spread throughout the entire Gaelic-speaking world. This study takes as its focus the early Finn Cycle, up to and including the composition of the most significant fianaigecht tale, Acallam na senorach ('The colloquy of the ancients'), at the beginning of the Early Modern Irish period. The volume also deals in detail with topics such as the nature of the fian ; the extent of early fragmentary Finn Cycle sources; the background to Toraigheacht Dhiarmada agus Ghrainne ('The pursuit of Diarmaid and Grainne'); the boyhood deeds and death of Finn; and the development of the Fenian lay tradition. The Early Finn Cycle details and investigates the primary and secondary sources for the study of this material and traces the literary development of the early fianaigecht corpus. In so doing, it seeks to account for the emergence of the Finn Cycle from fragmentarily documented beginnings, to become the dominant genre of Gaelic literature after 1200. nexusstc/The Medieval Manuscripts at Maynooth: Explorations in the Unknown/797577669d64f3f5b2787b18e4978da5.pdf
The Medieval manuscripts at Maynooth : explorations in the unknown Peter J. Lucas, Angela M. Lucas Four Courts Press Ltd, Portland, OR, 2014
This book provides an in-depth guide to the Maynooth medieval manuscripts (some 16 of them plus fragments) with illustrations. The descriptions of the manuscripts include full palaeographical / codicological details, information on the contents of the manuscripts, and their history, as far as it is known. Some of the manuscripts are of particular importance, either for their texts or for their illustrations, which are of good quality, or, in one case, because of the particular circumstances in which it was made. This material has lain mostly unknown for up to 200 years, and, in most cases, the works contained in the manuscripts have not hitherto been identified. For the first time, consideration is also given to the collection as a whole, and how its make-up may reflect the history and character of the institution where it was built up. In the absence of any one major donor whose interests might have dominated, the collection grew over decades mainly in the 19th century. It therefore reflects the tastes of a succession of senior members of the college plus a few donors.

Maps in those days : cartographic methods before 1850 cartographic methods before 1850 John Harwood Andrews Four Courts Press; Four Courts, Dublin, Portland, OR, Ireland, 2009
"For some years the emphasis in map-historical literature has been either on traditional cartobibliography or on various cultural, social and ideological aspects of the mapping process. By contrast, few recent books have described what early cartographers actually did. Maps in Those Days addresses this question. It deals with non-thematic maps of all kinds and of all parts of the world from earliest times to the mid-nineteenth century, with particular reference to classical antiquity, the Renaissance and the Enlightenment in Europe and in countries of European settlement, especially Britain and Ireland. A brief introduction to map history is followed by a review of the scientific or pseudo-scientific presuppositions that cartographers have brought to their task. Later chapters deal with different phases of production - sketching, instrumental surveying, plotting and projection. The contents of topographical, military, exploratory and maritime maps are distinguished, and consideration is given to methods of relief representation and to placenames. Production then gives way to presentation as maps as seen in the course of being copied, re-compiled, edited and embellished. This book should interest researchers who use early maps as historical sources as well as connoisseurs of cartography for its own sake."--Publisher's description

Matters of Deceit: Breach of Promise to Marry Cases in Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Limerick (96) (Maynooth Studies in Local History) Luddy, Maria Four Courts Press Ltd, Maynooth studies in local history -- no. 96, Dublin, Ireland, 2011
In Irish history, marriage was of huge significance to women and men for social, emotional, and economic reasons. Married women had greater status than unmarried women. The most acceptable way to form families was through marriage and, as in all time periods, both men and women desired children. Economic stability - though not necessarily guaranteed by marriage - was an inducement to marriage for many women, especially in a society where paid employment opportunities for them were limited. A breach of promise to marry is a fundamental break of a promise - by either a man or woman - to carry through a marriage. However, as this book shows, breach of promise cases were not always straightforward. Exploring the history of breach of promise cases in Ireland allows an insight into courtship rituals. It reveals the significance of monetary considerations in marriage settlements and the value that was placed on women's - and men's - reputations. ( Maynooth Studies in Local History - Number 96)

Derry: The Irish revolution, 1912-1923: The Irish Revolution, 1912-23 Adrian Grant Four Courts Press Ltd, Irish Revolution, 1912-23 series, Dublin (Irlande), 2018
In 1912, Derry was a busy port city with a thriving textile industry. An important transport hub, it was also a city divided along confessional and political lines. The unionist establishment controlled local government despite the existence of a large Catholic nationalist majority, leading to charges of gerrymandering and discrimination. The onset of home rule increased tensions in 1912-14 as unionist power was challenged and nationalist confidence grew. Street violence in the city and county towns was accompanied by the mass mobilizations of the Ulster and Irish Volunteers, on a collision course only halted by the outbreak of war in Europe. After the Easter 1916 Rising, the spectre of partition re-emerged and became the principal issue of concern to nationalists of all shades. An upsurge in republican violence after 1919 was largely kept in check by the presence of a significant number of British army and police; moreover, half the population was loyal to the British state. North county Derry was largely unionist and saw little republican activity, while the south was the main centre of action until the IRA's abortive Northern Offensive of 1922 and the exodus of republicans across the newly formed border. Meanwhile, the election of the first nationalist corporation in Derry city in 1920 kick-started a series of events that led to the worst sectarian violence in a generation. Based on newly released sources, this book makes a vital contribution to the historiography of Ulster during the revolutionary period. The Irish Franciscan College of St Anthony at Louvain, established in 1607, was an intellectual powerhouse for an attempt to save and promote the religion, culture and language of Gaelic Ireland. Most notably associated with that effort was Brother Mchel Clirigh, heading a scholarly team that produced, inter alia, the Annals of the Four Masters. This book comprises a revised edition of a book by Fr Brendan Jennings, OFM, first published in 1936, together with eight other scholarly articles by Paul Walsh, Felim O'Brien, OFM, and Canice Mooney, OFM.

Between the seventh and twelfth centuries, a distinctive form of script and illumination predominated in the manuscripts produced in the milieu of the Irish church. Although associated principally with Britain and Ireland, Ireland's reputation for learning and the missionary activity associated with Irish foundations mean that today Insular texts are found in library collections across the Continent and beyond. Arising from recent research at TCD, and marking the retirement of its eminent scholar of Insular manuscripts, Dr. Bernard Meehan, this book examines Irish manuscript culture from a broad range of perspectives. Contributors include: Dominique Barbet-Massin (Bibliotheque Municipale de Grenoble), Susie Bioletti (Trinity College Dublin), Claire Breay (British Library), Michelle Browne (emerita, U. London), Denis Casey (Maynooth U.), David Dumville (U. Aberdeen), William Endres (U. Government, War and Society in Medieval Ireland: Essays by Edmund Curtis, A.J. Otway-Ruthven and James Lydon (Trinity Medieval Ireland Series) Peter Crooks (editor) Four Courts Press Ltd, Reprint, 2019
In the late twelfth century, Ireland was absorbed into the dominions of the kings of England. This transformed the social and political life of the island, with implications that resonate to the present day. How are we to interpret this formative period of Irish history? In the course of the twentieth century, three successive occupants of the Lecky chair of history in Trinity College Dublin sought to provide answers. Modern scholarship remains deeply indebted to the work of Edmund Curtis, A.J. Otway-Ruthven and James Lydon. This volume brings together twenty-one of their most influential essays on the social, institutional and political character of the English colony in medieval Ireland. The editor's introduction explores the careers of 'The Lecky Professors' and assesses their intellectual legacy. An indispensable collection of essays for all those interested in the history of Ireland and Britain in the Middle Ages, this paperback new edition contains a bibliographical essay by the editor, which offers a guide to works published between 2008 and 2018.

The Irish Revenue Police, 1832-1857 : a Complete Alphabetical List, Short History and Genealogical Guide Jim Herlihy Four Courts Press Ltd, Dublin, Ireland, 2018
In the period 1832 to 1857, some 4,000 men served in the Irish Revenue Police, working to suppress illicit distillation. In this book, Jim Herlihy shows how to find information on them, providing an excellent resource for those interested in the history of the force, and of the period.A chapter on the history and origin of the Irish Revenue Police and its predecessor forces engaged in 'still-hunting' is followed by one describing what a career in the Revenue Police might have been like, another on tracing your ancestors in the IRP, and a short memoir by Lieutenant Matthew Power (1820-84). All this is followed by an extensive series of appendices filled with detailed information on the Irish Revenue Police and those who served in it, from the force's rank structure, to the distribution across Ireland of its divisions, stations and parties. The centrepiece of this is a complete list of every man who served in the IRP from 1830 to 1857.There is also information on what happened to the Irish Revenue Police after the force was disbanded in 1857, including the gratuities many were given, and lists of those who went on to join the Royal Irish Constabulary, the Dublin Metropolitan Police and the Londonderry Borough Police.Jim Herlihy, a retired member of the Garda Síochána and a co-founder of the Garda Síochána Historical Society, has worked on these sources for many years. His many publications include The Royal Irish Constabulary: a short history and genealogical guide (2016) and Royal Irish Constabulary officers: a biographical dictionary and genealogical guide, 1816-1922 (2005).

Family Histories of the Irish Revolution Ciara Boylan; Sarah-Anne Buckley; Pat Dolan; ProQuest (Firm) Dublin, Ireland: Open Air ; Portland, OR: Four Courts Press, Dublin, Ireland, Portland, OR, 2018
This volume presents a unique and engaging selection of stories from current and retired staff at NUI Galway of familial participation during the revolutionary period. It captures the ways in which family history and memory is transmitted and the influence and legacy of these histories. The stories include familial accounts of well-known figures like Peadar O'Donnell, Tom Kettle, and Hanna and Francis Sheehy-Skeffington, alongside accounts of men and women unknown/forgotten by the larger historical narrative. The contributions include accounts of nationalists and unionists; men, women, and young people; British army soldiers and Irish Volunteers; members of Cumann na mBan and the ICA. Through very real human experiences and personal stories, it demonstrates the complex ways in which people engaged with the events of the period and the diversity of contemporary experience. The contributions discuss how family history and memory was imparted and aim to explore the legacy of this on succeeding generations. As such, the volume reflects the impact of the revolutionary period on the present generation from a lifecourse perspective. Some of these family stories and memories have been buried for generations, such as those of family members who served in the British army during the First World War or of RUC men in rural Ireland, or the real and personal impact of the Civil War, thus shedding new light on the complex politics of memory in post-independence Ireland. -- Publisher description

upload/alexandrina/6. Middle Ages Series/Trinity Medieval Ireland (6 Books)/05. Robin Frame - Plantagenet Ireland (Trinity Medieval Ireland, Book 5) (2022) [Retail].pdf
Plantagenet Ireland Robin Frame; Four Courts Press Ltd, PT, 2022
For two centuries after 1199, Ireland was ruled by Plantagenet kings, lineal descendants of Henry II. The island became closely tied to the English crown not just by English law and direct administration, but through other networks, above all the allegiance of a settler establishment led by aristocratic, ecclesiastical, and civic elites that benefited from being within the orbit of royal patronage and service. This book contains fifteen interlinked studies, several of which appear here for the first time. The opening chapters trace Ireland’s changing place within a wider Plantagenet realm that itself altered geographically and institutionally during the period. In the thirteenth century Gaelic leaders were pushed to the geographical and political margins. In the fourteenth, English control and English custom retreated, posing fresh challenges to the crown and its ministers. Despite the alarmist claims of settler communities, Plantagenet Ireland was far from collapsing. Later chapters explore the altered distribution of power across the island. English chief governors, some of whom had experience of other borderlands of the Plantagenet realm, exercised power in a mixture of cultural modes, which enabled them to draw in, rather than simply confront, Gaelic lords and marcher lineages.

The Kings of Ailech and the Vikings, 800-1060AD: A History Darren McGettigan; Four Courts Press; Second Edition, Second, International Specialized Book Services, Portland, 2020
This book is an account of Viking activity in the north of Ireland, one of the less well-known episodes in the history of early medieval Ireland. It is also the story of the Cenel nEogain dynasty, an important Irish population group in the north of the island. The kings of Ailech came to prominence c.800 AD, just as the first Viking fleets began to raid the coasts of Ulster. Early Viking activity in the north of Ireland followed a similar pattern to raiding activity elsewhere on the island. It began to diverge after 866 when Aed Findliath, a high-king of Ireland from the Cenel nEogain dynasty, destroyed Scandinavian settlements in what is now Co. Antrim. It appears to have been the intention of the Cenel nEogain to allow Viking strongholds to survive further south in Ulaid territory at Strangford Lough and Carlingford, and later-on also at Ruib Mena on Lough Neagh. However, these longphuirt too were eventually destroyed by the Irish of the north of Ireland, the final ones in a spiral of violence that surrounded the death of the famous king of Aileach, Muirchertach na Cochall Craicinn (of the Leather Cloaks), who was killed by the Vikings in 943. This book also tells the stories of other note-worthy early medieval high-kings of Ireland who sprang from the Cenel nEogain dynasty. Among those discussed is Niall Glundub, killed at the battle of Dublin in 919, leading the combined armies of the Northern and Southern Ui Neill against Viking invaders known as the grandsons of Ivarr. Also included is his grandson Domnall Ua Neill, one of the first Irishmen to adopt a surname (which he took from his well-known grandfather). It was Domnall’s over-ambitious plans, caused by the expulsion of the Vikings from the north of Ireland, that instead led to the collapse of the traditional Ui Neill high-kingship of Ireland in the early eleventh century.
