Based on the idea that event structure plays an important role in linguistic analysis, this dissertation focuses on three main issues. The first issue is concerned with the intertwined relationships among eventuality types in both English and Chinese, their syntactic distributions, and semantic interpretations associated with almost-adverbials, in-adverbials, and for-adverbials. The contrasts between eventuality types are accounted for in terms of two principles: Event Projection and Event-component Fusion. The second issue is concerned with the development of Chinese resultative verb constructions and its close relationship with other syntactic constructions such as the Ba-construction, the Bei-construction, and the Verb-copying construction. It is suggested that the development of resultative verb constructions results from semantic factors rather than word order change from SVO to SOV. In addition, the contrasts of resultative verb constructions, serial verb constructions, and directional verb constructions in terms of whether the two verbs can occur adjacently are conceived of as an iconic reflection of event structure. The last issue is concerned with the linking of arguments to syntax in Chinese resultative verb constructions. It is demonstrated that the linking principles based on the event roles are able to account for the complementary distribution of the Ba-construction and the Verb-copying construction, because 'ba+NP' is associated only with the Locus of affect role (an entity that is involved in the endpoint), whereas 'a copied verb+NP' is associated only with the Target of activity role (an entity that undergoes the action). It is predicted that a resultative verb construction, which can occur in the Ba-construction, can have a corresponding Bei-construction.

On the Synchrony and Diachrony of Sentence-Final Particles: The Case of WO in Cantonese. This work attempts to examine the frequently used Sentence-Final Particle (SFP) wo3 in Hong Kong Cantonese synchronically and diachronically. In the past, most experts treated wo3 and another particle bo3 as variant forms, with the former being the result of sound change from the latter. In order to investigate the development of wo3, the early materials, movies and the university corpus are employed for the collection of language examples. It is found that in terms of their meanings and functions, wo3 and bo3 were distinctly separate at the very beginning. The observation of the increase and decrease in the frequency of use of the two SFPs in the past one hundred years makes it evident that while the usage of one prospers, the other declines. Regarding the formation of the multi-functional particle wo3, a grammaticalization chain is shown in this work to reflect its historical development, and its current situation is thus made clear with the analysis under the principles of unidirectionality, coexistence and preservation. The theories of evidentiality and subjectivity are brought in to differentiate wo3 from another SFP wo5 in the last part of this work.

At the height of European colonialism, Britain's reach circled the globe. Yet its empire did not proceed unchallenged, prompting efforts to preserve its kingdom by complementing military might with intellectual warfare. Mid-nineteenth century India was a case in point. After squashing rebellions in the subcontinent, the British clung desperately to an empire that was slipping from their grasp – an effort perpetuated by the literature of India-based British authors who negatively and oftentimes inaccurately portrayed Indians to justify British rule. Reich exposes this literary transformation against the backdrop of historiographical debate. She combines historical and literary analysis to illustrate three recurring fictional themes intended to legitimize British supremacy in India: (1) the perceived vulnerability of Indian women; (2) the alleged rivalry between Hindus and Muslims; and (3) the assumed incompetence of educated Indians regarding self-rule. Although focused on a specific era and region, Reich's work addresses old intellectual currents in fresh ways, breathing new relevance into appraisals of history, as well as of modern geopolitical times.

NEED and DARE may function as either modal auxiliaries or main verbs. Both syntactic patterns are fully acceptable in present-day English, although there exists some variation in use of the two patterns between the different regional varieties, as well as between written and spoken language. The present thesis reports the findings of a corpus-based study of the syntactic variation of NEED and DARE in the two major regional varieties of English, American and British English. The focus was made on the distribution of the different patterns (auxiliary, main verb and blend constructions) of NEED and DARE used with the 1st- and 2nd-person pronouns in the BNC and COCA.

Байкальская нерпа – эндемик и единственное водное млекопитающее озера Байкал. Поскольку озеро включено в Список участков мирового природного наследия ЮНЕСКО, то представляется актуальным изучение его обитателей, в частности такого уникального животного, как байкальская нерпа, в целях сохранения биологического разнообразия озера. В постнатальном онтогенезе брыжеечные лимфатические узлы байкальской нерпы претерпевают следующие возрастные изменения структурной организации: увеличение относительной площади соединительнотканного компонента; уменьшение доли, занимаемой корковым веществом; уменьшение относительной площади лимфоидных узелков. Проявляется тенденция к возрастному снижению корково-мозгового индекса. В брыжеечных лимфоузлах байкальской нерпы в процессе постнатального онтогенеза происходит снижение числа средних лимфоцитов и ретикулярных клеток, увеличение числа плазматических клеток; уменьшение числа больших лимфоцитов, увеличение содержания малых лимфоцитов в корковом веществе; снижение числа деструктивно измененных и разрушенных клеток в центрах размножения лимфоидных узелков; уменьшение числа малых лимфоцитов в мозговом веществе.

Nussbaum and applies them to the study of FSW's.This study is based on primary data and traces the causes to enter this profession due to rural poverty and patriarchy. The constant threat due to violence, vulnerability to STDs/HIV, limited scope to return to mainstream society as programs taken by government and NGOs are not adequate, limited scope to send their children for education due to absence of father's name and mother's profession, frustration because of absence of burial rights after their death, limited space to control over their environment have been identified as major problems for them. This paper draws attention to the importance of revisiting the contradictory laws and constitution of Bangladesh which have worsened their situations. At the end the paper has explored different arguments for de-criminalization, prohibition/abolition and recognition of this profession for these underprivileged people.

Managing diversity in today's organizational environments can challenge many organizations. This action research study addresses that challenge by investigating the outcomes of dialogic communication training on a city government management team experiencing organizational diversity. The study consisted of four phases: (1) individual interviews for needs assessment, (2) focus group meeting for training design, (3) dialogic communication training, and (4) individual interviews for assessment of the outcomes. The results of this study indicate that dialogic communication and the development of dialogic style of leadership through communication training provide a valuable and practical approach for work teams. Specifically, management team members' communication skills improved, they adopted a more participatory management style, and they reported higher levels of relational satisfaction. Study findings highlight the need for practitioners to assist in developing communication training that facilitates emergent dialogue.

Aspects of Akan Grammar and the Phonology-Syntax Interface: Phonology and Syntax Charles Marfo LAP Lambert Academic Publishing, 1, 2009

This book discusses aspects of the grammar of Akan, a language spoken in Ghana, and the theoretical aspects of the relationship between phonology and syntax. Particularly, some constructions are explored in the perspective of the phonology-syntax interface. The existence of phrasal or post-lexical rules has stimulated research in the phonology-syntax interface. In this regard, linguists are faced with some theoretical questions. One of them is with respect to how the phonology-syntax interface should be conceived; through Direct Reference or Indirect Reference? It is advanced in this book that the phonology may make reference to the syntax, but only remotely through the prosodic structure of the phonological component of the grammar (e.g. Zec and Inkelas 1990). Syntactic analysis of some of the constructions explored are done in the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar (e.g. Bresnan 2001). It is claimed that the prosodic structure primarily relates to the constituent structure of Lexical-Functional Grammar through a proposed mapping algorithm, the Compositional Mapping Theory. This is in order to adequately explain the phrasal rules occurring in the explored Akan constructions.

An NC Program merely guides and controls a Machining process. It cannot respond and react to variations in machining conditions during the operation. This results in many unfavorable situations like greater lead times, tool damage, extreme caution in work handling etc. during machining. In order to overcome above mentioned problems, the concept of ADAPTIVE CONTROL MACHINING was introduced. The purpose of introducing this concept is to control and optimize the variable cutting parameters. The applications of ACM are not only limited to NC machining but such systems are designed to compensate for environment changes perceived, monitored, altered or reset according to the situation. In the present work, Adaptive Control principles are applied to TURNING and experiments are carried out on a LATHE.The specimens selected for this experiment are specially designed so that the required sources of variability are included. As FORCE IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO FEED, process is kept under control.The results shows that successful implementaion of Adaptive control principles to TURNING is aptly justified.

Blasted by the past and lacking impetus to thrive, these tainted sites create urban spaces, which are quarried by their poisons and their pasts. Abused, abandoned, underused, With, heavy metals, lead dynamites, RDX, and what not; traversed by plumes of oil, and with the wrong pasts; these stand awkwardly. Overages, it seems, these poisonous places are far off from even being thought of revival. The word and the concept of restoring abandoned quarry spaces can only be understood by considering their origin, the green benchmarks that they were. A quarry site gives us an inspiring sense of place, the contours speak for the life on the edge, and the standing boulders give us the sense of balance, confidence and strength. Hence making an abandoned quarry site, in itself a place to create a community which can feel the dimensions of life. A gradual improvement from an abandoned land to a land holding an urban mass would show its adaptability to surroundings when presently it is just left to perish in time.

Cadmium pollution is of increasing scientific interest since cadmium is readily taken up by the roots of plants and its toxicity is generally considered to be 2-20 times higher than that of other heavy metals. since cadmium is a fairly immobile element, its accumulation in soils can become dangerous to all kinds of organisms.Cadmium with a density of 8.6g/cm, is a wide spread heavy metal, released in to the environment by power stations, heating systems, metal working industries, waste incinerators, urban traffic, cement factories and a by product of phosphate fertilizers. Soil contamination with cadmium has become a world wide problem leading to loss in agricultural yield and hazardous health effect through food chain biomagnification. The study describes the physiological and biochemical response of pea, spinach and wheat to cadmium toxicity with particular reference to oxidative stress. The main emphasis was laid on evaluating the activity of enzymic and non-enzymic antioxidants in plants.
