Bill Monroe: The Life and Music of the Blue Grass Man (Music in American Life Book 1) Tom Ewing University of Illinois Press, Music in American life, Music in American life, Illinois, 2018
From cradle to great, the comprehensive real story of Bill Monroe The Father of Bluegrass Music, Bill Monroe was a major star of the Grand Ole Opry for over fifty years; a member of the Country Music, Songwriters, and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame; and a legendary figure in American music. This authoritative biography sets out to examine his life in careful detail—to move beyond hearsay and sensationalism to explain how and why he accomplished so much. Former Blue Grass Boy and longtime music journalist Tom Ewing draws on hundreds of interviews, his personal relationship with Monroe, and an immense personal archive of materials to separate the truth from longstanding myth. Ewing tells the story of the Monroe family's musical household and Bill's early career in the Monroe Brothers duo. He brings to life Monroe's 1940s heyday with the Classic Bluegrass Band, the renewed fervor for his music sparked by the folk revival of the 1960s, and his declining fortunes in the years that followed. Throughout, Ewing deftly captures Monroe's relationships and the personalities of an ever-shifting roster of band members while shedding light on his business dealings and his pioneering work with Bean Blossom and other music festivals. Filled with a wealth of previously unknown details, Bill Monroe offers even the most devoted fan a deeper understanding of Monroe's towering achievements and timeless music.| Cover Title Copyright Contents Preface Acknowledgments Prologue Chapter One. 1892–1919 Chapter Two. 1920–1929 Chapter Three. 1930–1939 Chapter Four. 1940–1949 Chapter Five. 1950–1959 Chapter Six. 1960–1969 Chapter Seven. 1970–1979 Chapter Eight. 1980–1989 Chapter Nine. 1990–1996 Epilogue Appendix: Blue Grass Boys Notes Selected Bibliography Index | "Insightful . . . Chinese American Transnational Politics (Asian American Experience) Him Mark Lai; edited and with an introduction by Madeline Y. Hsu Urbana: University of Illinois Press, University of Illinois Press, Urbana, 2010
Born and raised in San Francisco, Lai was trained as an engineer but blazed a trail in the field of Asian American studies. Long before the field had any academic standing, he amassed an unparalleled body of source material on Chinese America and drew on his own transnational heritage and Chinese patriotism to explore the global Chinese experience. In Chinese American Transnational Politics, Lai traces the shadowy history of Chinese leftism and the role of the Kuomintang of China in influencing affairs in America. With precision and insight, Lai penetrates the overly politicized portrayals of a history shaped by global alliances and enmities and the hard intolerance of the Cold War era. The result is a nuanced and singular account of how Chinese politics, migration to the United States, and Sino-U.S. relations were shaped by Chinese and Chinese American groups and organizations. Lai revised and expanded his writings over more than thirty years as changing political climates allowed for greater acceptance of leftist activities and access to previously confidential documents. Drawing on Chinese- and English-language sources and echoing the strong loyalties and mobility of the activists and idealists he depicts, Lai delivers the most comprehensive treatment of Chinese transnational politics to date.

lgli/Learning for Work How Industrial Education Fostered Democratic Opportunity.pdf
Learning for Work: How Industrial Education Fostered Democratic Opportunity Connie Goddard University of Illinois Press, 1, 2024
Founded in 1883, the Chicago Manual Training School (CMTS) was a short-lived but influential institution dedicated to teaching a balanced combination of practical and academic skills. Connie Goddard uses the CMTS as a door into America’s early era of industrial education and the transformative idea of “learning to do.” Rooting her account in John Dewey’s ideas, Goddard moves from early nineteenth century supporters of the union of learning and labor to the interconnected histories of CMTS, New Jersey’s Manual Training and Industrial School for Colored Youth, North Dakota’s Normal and Industrial School, and related programs elsewhere. Goddard analyzes the work of movement figures like abolitionist Theodore Weld, educators Calvin Woodward and Booker T. Washington, social critic W.E.B. Du Bois, Dewey himself, and his influential Chicago colleague Ella Flagg Young. The book contrasts ideas about manual training held by advocate Nicholas Murray Butler with those of opponent William Torrey Harris and considers overlooked connections between industrial education and the Arts and Crafts Movement. An absorbing merger of history and storytelling, Learning for Work looks at the people who shaped industrial education while offering a provocative vision of realizing its potential today.

Heroes of Unwritten Story: The UAW, 1934-39 Henry Kraus; Nelson Lichtenstein University of Illinois Press, PS, 1994
The early United Automobile Workers union comes vividly to life in this "participant's account" of the development of an organization that once embodied the promise of the American labor movement. Henry Kraus, a UAW founder and the foremost labor journalist of that time, combines interviews conducted more than fifty years ago with a decade of more recent archival research to present a richly detailed account of the union's beginnings. Kraus introduces scores of rank-and-file union members and leaders. Veteran organizer Wyndham Mortimer and labor pioneers Walter, Roy, and Victor Reuther, George Addes, Robert Travis, Ed Hall, and Richard Frankensteen - all are brought to life and depicted complete with personal virtues and individual foibles. The chronicle ends in 1939 as the author plans to start work on what would become his first hook, The Many and the Few.

Joseph White Musser: A Mormon Fundamentalist (Introductions to Mormon Thought) Cristina M. Rosetti University of Illinois Press, Introductions to Mormon Thought, 2024
"On March 21, 1921, Joseph White Musser (1872-1954) was excommunicated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) because he refused to give up the practice of plural marriage out of devotion to the religion's foundational texts. Until his excommunication, Musser had been a leader in the Church. He served a mission in Alabama, was called to the 16th Quorum of the Seventy, received his Second Anointing alongside his first wife at the young age of 27, and served as a high councilor in the Uintah Wasatch and Granite Stakes. But when the Church released the Second Manifesto, ending new plural marriages in the United States, Musser continued performing these marriages, and indeed continued marrying, which demonstrated that changes within the institutional Church were not always universally received. However, Musser's leadership did not end with his excommunication, and the former LDS leader become one of the most forceful thinkers and Prophets in the fundamentalist movement. He was ordained an Apostle by Lorin C. Woolley in the Council of Friends, a group in the emerging Mormon fundamentalist movement. The fundamentalists proved to be as heterogeneous a group as the mainstream LDS Church, as the Council of Friends fractured into multiple groups upon Musser's death. Musser's story is then simultaneously the story of the birth of a new Mormon movement, a crisis in another Mormon movement, and the ways in which the one survived through adaptation while the other survived through resistance and preservation of the past. A significant Priesthood leader who codified and expanded many of the foundational teachings in modern Mormon fundamentalism, Musser was a foundational Mormon thinker whose intellectual work translates into the lived experience of his contemporary followers"--

lgli/Lieder in America_cc.pdf
Lieder in America : on stages and in parlors Heather Anne Platt University of Illinois Press, Music in American life, Urbana, 2023
Lieder and the rise of song recital in the United States, 1850–1914 Though viewed as quintessentially German, lieder became a centerpiece of nineteenth century song recitals in the United States. By the 1890s, these songs, which were often sung in English, were a sensation among tutored and untutored music lovers alike. Heather Platt examines the varied supporters and singers who both established the lied as a concert repertoire and shaped a new kind of recital dedicated to art songs. Lieder were embraced and spread by performers like Max Heinrich and advocates like John Sullivan Dwight, as well as by the women’s clubs that flourished nationwide. At the same time as examining the critical reception of the artists and songs, Platt reveals ways in which US recital programs anticipated trends in European recitals. She also places lieder against the backdrop of the time, when factors like the growth in the sheet music industry, the evolution of American art song, and emerging anti-German feeling had a profound impact on the genre’s popularity.

Constitutional Problems Under Lincoln James G. Randall University Of Illinois Press, June 3, 1997
How "executive" can a U.S. President be during wartime and still violate and vitiate a constitutional government? Was Lincoln right when he said that unusual legal processes during a national emergency were like the surgeon's knife, because such a time is a time of cutting in order to save? These are problems of today. And they were problems of Lincoln's time. This book, the result of fifteen years of close research by one of our widely recognized Lincoln scholars, shows the striking similarities between the constitutional problems of Lincoln's scholars shows the striking similarities between the constitutional problems of Lincoln's time and our own. And it presents the problems without getting involved in legalistic detail. The book shows how Lincoln doubted the legal effect of the Emancipation Proclamation; how the problem of the conscientious objector was handled; how conscription was used on Presidential authority before Congress acted; how the war affected censorship of communications media; how civilians were brought to military trial in short, it shows how this era of constitutional history during wartime is woven into the social history of that time, affecting the very lives of the people. When CONSTITUTIONAL PROBLEMS UNDER LINCOLN was first published in 1926, it was the only book among the host of Lincolniana that got at the constitutional aspects of Lincoln's Presidency. Through the years it has become basic to Lincoln scholarship. This is a much-needed new edition completely reset, with a new foreword, some textual changes, and valuable additions to the bibliography. In his foreword to this edition Mr. Randall links the discussion to present times and deals significantly with Lincoln's attitude toward war and peace. This new edition is here published for historians, for citizens seeking a better understanding of American constitutional history, and for admirers of Lincoln whose interest does not end with 1861 but carries over into the actual problems of his administration.

San Francisco Reds: Communists in the Bay Area, 1919-1958 Robert W. Cherny University of Illinois Press, 1, 2024
Founded in 1919, the Communist Party (CP) in San Francisco survived an ineffectual early period to become a force in the trade union heyday of the 1930s. Robert Cherny uses the lives and careers of more than fifty members to tell the story of the city’s CP from its founding through 1958. Cherny draws on FBI files, the records of the CP at the Russian State Archive for Social and Political History, interviews, and memoirs to follow male and female party and union leaders, rank-and-file members, and others. His history reveals why people joined the CP while charting the frequent changes in policy, constant member turnover, and disruptive factionalism that limited party aims and successes. Cherny also follows his subjects through their resignations, expulsions, or other reasons for departure and looks at the CP’s influence on their lives in subsequent years. Vivid and exhaustively researched, San Francisco Reds is a long view account of the personal motivations and activism of an Old Left generation in a West Coast city.

Black Women Legacies: Public History Sites Seen and Unseen ALEXANDRIA. RUSSELL University of Illinois Press, 2024
From Black clubwomen to members of preservation organizations, African American women have made commemoration a central part of Black life and culture. Alexandria Russell illuminates the process of memorialization while placing African American women at the center of memorials they brought into being and others constructed in their honor. Their often undocumented and unheralded work reveals the importance of the memorializers and public memory crafters in establishing a culture of recognition. Forced to strategize with limited resources, the women operated with a resourcefulness and savvy that had to meet challenges raised by racism, gender and class discrimination, and specific regional difficulties. Yet their efforts from the 1890s to the 2020s shaped and honed practices that became indispensable to the everyday life and culture of Black Americans. Intersectional and original, Black Women Legacies explores the memorialization of African American women and its...

What Work Is Robert Bruno Working Class in American Hist, Working Class in American History, 1, 2024
A distinctive exploration of how workers see work For more than twenty years, Robert Bruno has taught labor history and labor studies to union members from a wide range of occupations and demographic groups. In the class, he asked his students to finish the question "Work is--?" in six words or less. The thousands of responses he collected provide some of the rich source material behind What Work Is. Bruno draws on the thoughts and feelings experienced by workers in the present day to analyze how we might design a future of work. He breaks down perceptions of work into five categories: work and time; the space workers occupy; the impact of work on our lives; the sense of purpose that motivates workers; and the people we work for, in all senses of the term. Far-seeing and sympathetic, What Work Is merges personal experiences with research, poetry, and other diverse sources to illuminate workers' lives in the present and envision what work could be in the future.

On the Waves of Empire: U. S. Imperialism and Merchant Sailors, 1872-1924 William D. Riddell University of Illinois Press, Working Class in American History, 1, 2023
In the aftermath of the Spanish-American War, the United States’ acquisition of an overseas empire compelled the nation to reconsider the boundary between domestic and foreign--and between nation and empire. William D. Riddell looks at the experiences of merchant sailors and labor organizations to illuminate how domestic class conflict influenced America’s emerging imperial system. Maritime workers crossed ever-shifting boundaries that forced them to reckon with the collision of different labor systems and markets. Formed into labor organizations like the Sailor’s Union of the Pacific and the International Seaman’s Union of America, they contested the U.S.’s relationship to its empire while capitalists in the shipping industry sought to impose their own ideas. Sophisticated and innovative, On the Waves of Empire reveals how maritime labor and shipping capital stitched together, tore apart, and re-stitched the seams of empire.

Forming the Public: A Critical History of Journalism in the United States Frank Dallas Durham; Thomas Patrick Oates University of Illinois Press, The History of Media and Communication, 2024
Throughout United States history, journalists and media workers have mobilized to promote and oppose various movements in public life. But a single meaning of the public remains elusive. Frank D. Durham and Thomas P. Oates provide an eye-opening analysis of the role played by journalism in the ongoing struggle to shape and transform ideas about the public. Using historical episodes and news reports, Durham and Oates offer examples of the influential words and images deployed by not only journalists but by media workers and activists. Their analysis moves from the patriot-inflamed emotions of the revolutionary period to the conventional and creative ways the American Indian Movement confronted the mainstream with their grievances. Weaving eyewitness history through US history, Forming the Public reveals what understanding the journalism landscape can teach us about the nature of journalism's own interests in race, gender, and class while tracing the factors that...

Samuel Barber : his life and legacy Howard Pollack University of Illinois Press, Music in American Life Ser, Champaign, 2023
A pivotal twentieth-century composer, Samuel Barber earned a long list of honors and accolades that included two Pulitzer Prizes for Music and the public support of conductors like Arturo Toscanini, Serge Koussevitzky, and Leonard Bernstein. Barber's works have since become standard concert repertoire and continue to flourish across high art and popular culture. Acclaimed biographer Howard Pollack ( Aaron Copland , George Gershwin ) offers a multifaceted account of Barber's life and music while placing the artist in his social and cultural milieu. Born into a musical family, Barber pursued his artistic ambitions from childhood. Pollack follows Barber's path from his precocious youth through a career where, from the start, the composer consistently received prizes, fellowships, and other recognition. Stylistic analyses of works like the Adagio for Strings , the Violin Concerto, Knoxville: Summer of 1915 for voice and orchestra, the Piano Concerto, and the operas Vanessa and Antony and Cleopatra , stand alongside revealing accounts of the music's commissioning, performance, reception, and legacy. Throughout, Pollack weaves in accounts of Barber's encounters with colleagues like Aaron Copland and Francis Poulenc, performers from Eleanor Steber and Leontyne Price to Vladimir Horowitz and Van Cliburn, patrons, admirers, and a wide circle of eminent friends and acquaintances. He also provides an eloquent portrait of the composer's decades-long relationship with the renowned opera composer Gian Carlo Menotti. Informed by new interviews and immense archival research, Samuel Barber is a long-awaited critical and personal biography of a monumental figure in twentieth-century American music. |Introduction Samuel Barber and His Family A Musical Education Personal Matters: Early Years Other Formative Experiences Early Works Through 1932 More Adventures at Home and Abroad, 1933-1939 Music for a Scene from Shelley and One Day of Spring Songs and Choruses, 1934-1940 The First Symphony and the String Quartet Adagio for Strings and the First Essay The Violin Concerto and Second Essay In the Army The Second Symphony and Excursions Capricorn Concerto and the Cello Concerto Barber and His Contemporaries Medea Knoxville: Summer of 1915 and "Nuvoletta" The Piano Sonata and Mélodies passagères Personal Matters: Later Years A Composer's Life Souvenirs and Hermit Songs Prayers of Kierkegaard, Adventure, and Summer Music Vanessa From the Nocturne to Die Natali The Piano Concerto and Andromache's Farewell The Creation of Antony and Cleopatra Antony and Cleopatra in Performance From Chorale for Ascension Day to The Lovers From Fadograph of a Yestern Scene to the Canzonetta Epilogue and Conclusion Notes Index | "Howard Pollack's 'Samuel Barber: His Life and Legacy,' which continues his remarkable series of books on American composers and lyricists, may be the finest biography of an American classical musician since Anthony Tommasini's 'Virgil Thomson: Composer on the Aisle.'. . . As a member of Poster Children, Rose Marshack took part in entwined revolutions. Marshack and other women seized a much-elevated profile in music during the indie rock breakthrough while the advent of new digital technologies transformed the recording and marketing of music. Touring in a van, meeting your idols, juggling a programming job with music, keeping control and credibility, the perils of an independent record label (and the greater perils of a major)—Marshack chronicles the band's day-to-day life and punctuates her account with excerpts from her tour reports and hard-learned lessons on how to rock, program, and teach while female. She also details the ways Poster Children applied punk's DIY ethos to digital tech as a way to connect with fans via then-new media like pkids listservs, internet radio, and enhanced CDs. Distant friends and intimate strangers : stories by Charles East Urbana: University of Illinois Press, Sunsinger Books/Illinois short fiction, Urbana, Illinois, 1996
East's terrain is a South that in the age of TV soap operas and radio call-in shows is no longer easily distinguished from the rest of the country. In "The Girl Who Made It with Kennedy" a man finds himself unable to shake his memories of the girl or his flashbacks to Dealey Plaza. In another of the stories a son remembers a summer in flight with his father, the "Brain Surgeon" of the title, a man who knew next to nothing about the human heart - "didn't know the territory."

The Propaganda of Freedom: JFK, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, and the Cultural Cold War (Music in American Life) Joseph Horowitz Music in American Life;University of Illinois Press, Music in American life, Urbana, 2023
"Eloquently extolled by President John F. Kennedy, the idea that only artists in free societies can produce great art became a bedrock assumption of the Cold War. That this conviction defied centuries of historical evidence--to say nothing of achievements within the Soviet Union--failed to impact impregnable cultural Cold War doctrine. Horowitz shows how the efforts of the CIA-funded Congress for Cultural Freedom were distorted by an anti-totalitarian "psychology of exile" traceable to its secretary general, the displaced Russian aristocrat/composer Nicolas Nabokov, and to Nabokov's hero Igor Stravinsky. In counterpoint, Horowitz investigates personal, social, and political factors that actually shape the creative act. He focuses on Stravinsky, who in Los Angeles experienced a "freedom not to matter," and Dmitri Shostakovich, who was both victim and beneficiary of Soviet cultural policies. He also takes a fresh look at cultural exchange and explores paradoxical similarities and differences framing the popularization of classical music in the Soviet Union and the United States. In closing, he assesses the Kennedy administration's arts advocacy initiatives and their pertinence to today's fraught American national identity. Challenging long-entrenched myths, this book newly explores the tangled relationship between the ideology of freedom and ideals of cultural achievement"-- Provided by publisher

Ain't I an anthropologist : Zora Neale Hurston beyond the literary icon Jennifer L Freeman Marshall, 1968- University of Illinois Press, New Black studies series, Urbana :, 2023
Iconic as a novelist and popular cultural figure, Zora Neale Hurston remains underappreciated as an anthropologist. Is it inevitable that Hurston's literary authority should eclipse her anthropological authority? If not, what socio-cultural and institutional values and processes shape the different ways we read her work? Jennifer L. Freeman Marshall considers the polar receptions to Hurston's two areas of achievement by examining the critical response to her work across both fields. Drawing on a wide range of readings, Freeman Marshall explores Hurston's popular appeal as iconography, her elevation into the literary canon, her concurrent marginalization in anthropology despite her significant contributions, and her place within constructions of Black feminist literary traditions. Perceptive and original, Ain't I an Anthropologist is an overdue reassessment of Zora Neale Hurston's place in American cultural and intellectual life. |Acknowledgments Introduction: "Twice as Much Praise or Twice as Much Blame" On Firsts, Foremothers, and "The Walker Effect" Signifying "Texts": The Race for Hurston Deconstructing an Icon: Tradition and Authority "Ain't I an Anthropologist?" Yet her pioneering work in African diaspora ethnography and anthropology, especially her work in Haiti, remains little-known. . . . Eternity in the ether : a Mormon media history GAVIN. FELLER University of Illinois Press, The History of Media and Communication Series, 1, 2023
"Mass media and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints evolved alongside each other, and communications technology became a fundamental part of the Church's institutions and communities. Gavin Feller investigates the impact of radio, television, and the internet on Mormonism and what it tells us about new media's integration into American life. The Church wrestled with the promise of new media to help implement its vision of Zion. But it also had to contend with threat that media posed to the family and other important facets of the Latter-day Saint faith. Inevitably, media technologies forced the leadership and lay alike to reconsider organizational values and ethical commitments. As Feller shows, the conflicts they faced illuminate the fundamental forces of control and compromise that enmesh an emerging medium in American social and cultural life. Intriguing and original, Eternity in the Ether blends communications history with a religious perspective to examine the crossroads where mass media met Mormonism in the twentieth century"-- Provided by publisher

DRONES, TONES, AND TIMBRES : sounding place among nomads of the inner asian mountain-steppes Carole Pegg University of Illinois Press, 1, 2024
An indispensable study of the music of Altai-Sayan peoples Based on more than twenty years of collaborative research, Carole Pegg’s long-awaited participatory ethnography explores how Indigenous nomadic peoples of Russia’s southern Siberian republics (Altai, Khakassia, Tyva) sound multiphonies of place in a post-Soviet global world. Inspired by the mountain-steppe ecology and pathways of nomadism, soundscapes created in performative ritual events cross political and multiple-world boundaries in a shamanic-animist universe, enabling human and spirit actor interactions in a series of sensuous worlds. As with the “throat-singing” for which Indigenous Altai-Sayan peoples are famous, senses of place involve sonic relations, rootedness, movement, and plurality. Pegg echoes their drone-partials musical and ontological models in an innovative theoretical entwinement. Three strands form the book’s multivocal drone, the partials of which sound in each chapter: ontological sonicality and musicality that enables emplacement and movement; the importance of shamanism-animism--at the core of Indigenous spiritual practices--for personhood and community; and the agency of sonic performances. Sounding place, Pegg demonstrates, is essential to the identities, ways of life, and very senses of being of Indigenous Altai-Sayan peoples.

Joyce Carol Oates wrote in the Washington Post Book World , "Murphy is a Midwestern cousin of Donleavy's Ginger Man, but much more human and troubled. . . . It is a remarkable achievement, the presentation of a complex, suffering, self-conscious, and very lyric personality as he endures his own being."

Fear of a Black republic : Haiti and the birth of Black internationalism in the United States LESLIE M. ALEXANDER University of Illinois Press, Black Internationalism, 1, 2022
"The emergence of Haiti as a sovereign Black nation lit a beacon of hope for Black people throughout the African diaspora. Leslie M. Alexander's study reveals the untold story of how free and enslaved Black people in the United States defended the young Caribbean nation from forces intent on maintaining slavery and white supremacy. Concentrating on Haiti's place in the history of Black internationalism, Alexander illuminates the ways Haitian independence influenced Black thought and action in the United States. As she shows, Haiti embodied what whites feared most: Black revolution and Black victory. Thus inspired, Black activists in the United States embraced a common identity with Haiti's people, forging the idea of a united struggle that merged the destinies of Haiti with their own striving for freedom. A bold exploration of Black internationalism's origins, Fear of a Black Republic links the Haitian revolution to the global Black pursuit of liberation, justice, and social equality"-- Provided by publisher

Making the immigrant soldier : how race, ethnicity, class, and gender intersect in the US military Cristina-Ioana Dragomir University of Illinois Press, 1, 2023
"Immigrants to the United States have long used the armed forces as a shortcut to citizenship. Cristina-Ioana Dragomir profiles Lily, Alexa, and Vikrant, three immigrants of varying nationalities and backgrounds who chose military service as their way of becoming American citizens. Privileging the trio's own words and experiences, Dragomir crafts a human-focused narrative that moves from their lives in their home countries and decisions to join the military to their fraught naturalization processes within the service. Dragomir illuminates how race, ethnicity, class, and gender impacted their transformation from immigrant to soldier, veteran, and American. She explores how these factors both eased their journeys and created obstacles that complicated their access to healthcare, education, economic resources, and other forms of social justice. A compelling union of analysis and rich storytelling, Making the Immigrant Soldier traces the complexities of serving in the military in order to pursue the American dream"-- Provided by publisher

Christmas in Illinois : [a collection of holiday memories, recipes, and images James Ballowe Urbana: University of Illinois Press, First Edition, FR, 2010
"Christmas seems to have been always with us. It is that time of year when we expect good cheer and goodwill, a moment's respite from the year's vicissitudes, solace during difficult times," writes James Ballowe in his introduction to Christmas in Illinois. This book is about the holiday as remembered by Illinoisans. Some are widely familiar--John W. Allen, Gwendolyn Brooks, Sandra Cisneros, Mike Royko, Carl Sandburg, Joseph Smith--but most are known only in their close-knit communities that together represent the very best of the Prairie State. We learn here about the customs of Christmas from Chicago to Cairo, Belleville to Danville, before statehood to the present day, through hard times and good. Tales, poems, news reports, memoirs, recipes, and images are arranged in sections on Christmas in Illinois history, living traditions, songs and symbols, Christmas outdoors, eating merrily, and memories. We see how bright an occasion Christmas has been, and sometimes amusing, raucous, or even dark. The collection's highlights include Chicago's Christmas tree ship, Peoria's Santa Parade, Rockford's Julotta service, a Victorian holiday in Bloomington, and Audubon's 1810 Christmas on the Cache River. Nature writers detail holiday bird-watching expeditions along the North Shore and in deepest southern Illinois. A letter from a member of the 130th Illinois Infantry captures Christmas Day 1863, and Jack McReynolds recalls West Frankfort's 1951 Orient Number Two mine disaster that thereafter haunted the holiday for him and many others. The holiday table is not neglected, with traditional recipes for wild game, pickled herring, and all manner of Christmas cookies. A wide array of illustrations includes images of Chicago's grand State Street parade, the Santa Lucia celebration at Bishop Hill, Belleville's Santa Claus House, Millikin University's Vespers tradition, the University of Illinois madrigal singers, Studs Terkel singing songs of good cheer, and the holiday art of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Heat up some cider, put a log on the fire, and curl up with Christmas in Illinois to share the holiday with friends both old and new.

Flower gardening in the hot Midwest : USDA zone 5 and lower zone 4 Hillegass, Linda Urbana, Ill.: University of Illinois Press, Urbana, Ill, ©2000
The Midwest presents special challenges to the aspiring flower gardener. Hot winds, intense sun, and unrelenting summer heat, combined with bitter cold in the winter and sudden shifts in temperature, call for hardy blooms and careful planning by those who tend them. In this practical, charmingly user-friendly guide to gardening success, veteran gardener Linda Hillegass outlines her tried-and-true strategies for outmaneuvering the midwestern climate to cultivate a thriving garden. Addressing both aspects of this distinctive climate, where plants must be resistant to extended periods of very high heat as well as to subzero winters, Hillegass catalogs the flowering plants best suited to the extremes of a region that extends from South Dakota and Nebraska east to Indiana (USDA zone 5 and the southern half of zone 4) and also includes Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois. She offers guidance on preparing and enriching the soil, composting, planting and transplanting, watering, pinching and pruning, and combating pests. She also provides a gardener's chronology of how long and how frequently specific plants can be expected to bloom. Her tips will help maximize each plant's beauty over the course of the season and, for the many perennials she discusses, from year to year. If visions of daffodils, dahlias, and daylilies dance in your head through the long months of a midwestern winter, this is the book for you. The novice gardener, the experienced gardener new to the Midwest, and the midwestern gardener who has despaired at delicate flowers withering under the unforgiving sun will all welcome Hillegass' friendly, encouraging, and eminently practical guide.

Writing fiction for children : stories only you can tell Morris, Judy K. University of Illinois Press ; University Presses Marketing, Urbana, Ill., Wantage, 2001
Whether you're nurturing your first idea for a children's book or have a published book or two under your belt, Judy K. Morris will guide you, inspire you, challenge you, encourage you, and improve your chances of reaching the ultimate goal of every children's author: your reader inside your story and your story inside your reader.
A published author of both fiction and nonfiction for children, Morris draws on extensive experience teaching children how to write and teaching adults how to write for children. Here she combines concrete methods and step-by-step techniques with succinct rules of thumb: work at making your novel whole from the start; never underestimate the power of the plain truth; personality quirks are no substitute for character; doing a good job of writing usually means doing a good job of rewriting.

Using judiciously chosen examples from successful children's literature, Writing Fiction for Children covers the building blocks of plot, characters, and setting and addresses common problems such as awkward plotting, oversimplifying, and taking a preachy or self-conscious tone. Pragmatic exercises stimulate writers to scour their experiences, sharpen their powers of observation, and capture the details, voice, and narrative energy that can bring stories vividly to life and keep readers submerged in make-believe. Loaded with practical advice and helpful exercises, Writing Fiction for Children is especially useful for anyone who aspires to write for children in the "middle ages" of eight to twelve.

Children's books should be hopeful, thrilling, funny, interesting, touching, and a pleasure to read, Morris says. Above all, they must have something at stake that matters. While conceding that only the author can provide the spark of a story to tell, Morris offers invaluable guidance on the daily work of crafting, shaping, refining, revising, and publishing a children's novel.

True Love: A COMEDY OF THE AFFECTIONS (Prairie State Books) Edith Wyatt; introduction by Babette Inglehart Urbana: University of Illinois Press, Prairie State books, Urbana, Illinois, 1993
"This prefeminist comedy of manners centers on the love relationships involving two families: the Marshes, an unpretentious and democratically inclined city clan with small-town ties, and the Hubbards, Chicago elitists characterized by an extremely repressive social ethic. In a book that was a critical and commercial success when it was first published in 1903, Edith Wyatt shows how women's roles were moving away from an exclusive concern with family life, marriage, and children. She compares and contrasts manners of the city and the country, of old money and new, of men and women, of lovers and courtships, and of the conventions of romantic fiction. Wyatt was praised by William Dean Howells as among the best of the "Chicago school" writers for the way she dealt with life in Chicago and in the downstate Illinois community she called Centreville. He also found her comparable to Jane Austen as a satirist of social manners."--BOOK JACKET

lgli/Von Glahn - The Sounds of Place.pdf
The Sounds of Place: Music and the American Cultural Landscape (Music in American Life) Denise Von Glahn University of Illinois Press, Music in American life, First Illinois paperback, Urbana, 2021
Composers like Charles Ives, Duke Ellington, Aaron Copland, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich created works that indelibly commemorated American places. Denise Von Glahn analyzes the soundscapes of fourteen figures whose "place pieces" tell us much about the nation's search for its own voice and about its ever-changing sense of self. She connects each composer's feelings about the United States and their reasons for creating a piece to the music, while analyzing their compositional techniques, tunes, and styles. Approaching the compositions in chronological order, Von Glahn reveals how works that celebrated the wilderness gave way to music engaged with humanity's influence—benign and otherwise—on the landscape, before environmentalism inspired a return to nature themes in the late twentieth century. Wide-ranging and astute, The Sounds of Place explores high art music's role in the making of national myth and memory.

Morel tales : the culture of mushrooming Fine, Gary Alan Urbana: University of Illinois Press, REPRINT, 2003

In this thoughtful book, Gary Fine explores how Americans attempt to give meaning to the natural world that surrounds them. Although nature has often been treated as an unproblematic reality, Fine suggests that the meanings we assign to the natural environment are culturally grounded. In other words, there is no nature separate from culture. He calls this process of cultural construction and interpretation, naturework. Of course, there is no denying the biological reality of trees, mountains, earthquakes, and hurricanes, but, he argues, they must be interpreted to be made meaningful. Fine supports this claim by examining the fascinating world of mushrooming.
Based on three years of field research with mushroomers at local and national forays, Morel Tales highlights the extensive range of meanings that mushrooms have for mushroomers. Fine details how mushroomers talk about their finds—turning their experiences into fish stories (the one that got away), war stories, and treasure tales; how mushroomers routinely joke about dying from or killing others with misidentified mushrooms, and how this dark humor contributes to the sense of community among collectors. He also describes the sometimes friendly, sometimes tense relations between amateur mushroom collectors and professional mycologists. Fine extends his argument to show that the elaboration of cultural meanings found among mushroom collectors is equally applicable to birders, butterfly collectors, rock hounds, and other naturalists.

The New Yorker

Nicholas P. Money is wild about mushrooms. I count myself among the few humans who love fungi, truly, madly, deeply, he writes in Mr. Bloomfield's Orchard, a companionable foray into the realm of stinkhorns, black mold, yeast, and even Malassezia, the dandruff-related fungus that Head & Shoulders shampoo is designed to combat. Money is an English-born mycologist who has spent his life uncovering the secrets and lore of fungi, including varieties that thrive in solid granite, feed on human flesh, assist in crime-scene investigations, and, as in the case of a particular armillaria covering twenty-two hundred acres in Oregon, grow to become the largest organisms on earth.

Of course, the fruiting bodies of various fungi are prized for their epicurean and hallucinogenic properties. In Morel Tales, the sociologist Gary Alan Fine makes an amusing study of the culture of mushrooming, tagging along with intrepid members of the Minnesota Mycological Society as they perform the naturework of plucking such deep-woods delicacies as slippery jacks and bringing them home to sauté. Wild mushrooms, Fine writes, are culturally mediated objects, and millions of risk-loving Americans now enjoy the weekend thrill of harvesting them.

Peter Jordan's Wild Mushroom is too hefty for your backpack, but perfect for the kitchen. Jordan is a British mushroomer who offers tips on identifying toothsome amethyst deceivers or lethal death caps, recipes for whipping up Hedgehog Mushroom Pancakes or Shaggy Ink Cap Soup, and endless enthusiasm: Imagine the ultimate triumph of finding your first giant puffball -- its head actually bigger than your own! (Mark Rozzo)
