## Why It Matters
Carla Sunberg
## Conclusion
Notes fundamentalists read the creation accounts in Genesis quite differently from Wesleyans. Consequently, chapter 3 contrasts how people in biblical times viewed the world against how moderns view the cosmos. In chapter 4 we compare and contrast fundamentalist theology and Wesleyan theology. The fifth chapter observes how fundamentalism erred, even if unintentionally, in its response to modernity. Building upon that discussion, in chapter 6, a representative of the natural sciences will explore the relationship between modern science and the Christian faith. The chapter will show that Wesleyan theology has no interest in pitting legitimate science against orthodox faith. Chapter 7 discusses a Wesleyan understanding of unity-in-diversity, or a catholic spirit. Finally, chapter 8 examines the relationship between biblical authority and Christian holiness in the Wesleyan tradition.
This book contains historical, biblical, scientific, and theological exposition. Its goal is to be both informative and formative. With the exception of chapter 1, following each chapter is a practical discussion of why that chapter matters. Most of these follow-up pieces emerged from discussions among groups of laypersons led by clergy. Some of them are written by clergy as practical pastoral counsel.
The times call for Christians who will embrace apostolic Christian faith with informed conviction. From its beginning, the Wesleyan tradition has sought to be holistically informed by Scripture (principally), Christian tradition, reason, and experience. It has advocated a religion of the heart that entails the Holy Spirit renewing the whole person, in community, after the image of Christ in righteousness and true holiness. For Wesleyans, the proof of the gospel resides primarily in its being lived, in transformed life, not in logic and argumentation.
John Wesley was deeply committed to informed and thoughtful discipleship. To educate the Methodists he produced a thirty-volume library meant to foster thoughtful and well-informed piety. In 1748 Wesley created Kingswood School near Bristol to educate children of coal miners. He placed Hebrew and Greek grammar in the curriculum so children could learn to read the Bible in its original languages. And when Wesley studied and sought to explain the Scriptures, he drew upon the best scholarly tools available. "Faith seeking understanding" 5 guided Wesley's own life and his aspirations for the Methodists.
The point of all this is that the Wesleyan tradition offers no haven for any form of Christianity that shrinks from honest and rigorous consideration of all aspects of the Christian faith and its relationship to the world. Wesleyans have characteristically shied away from marrying the Christian faith to a worldview in one era that might leave it a widow in the next. A thoughtful embrace of apostolic Christian faith is its aspiration. Denominations that stand in the Wesleyan tradition are at their best when they advocate a vital faith that seeks understanding through a bold examination of the results of all human exploration, whether in technology, in the sciences, or through historical research.
In that spirit our study will proceed.

备用描述
You've heard the old saying, "You can't fit a square peg in a round hole." You can try to manipulate or force the peg, but really the only way you can make it fit into the round hole is by shaving some of the sides off. But once you do that, you can change the peg. In the same way, if we adopt the tenets of fundamentalism, we'll inherently change our Wesleyan faith- we'll end up with something different. In Square Peg, well-respected educators, pastors, and ministry leaders demonstrate the distinct differences between Wesleyan theology and fundamentalism. Through historical, biblical, scientific, and theological exposition, you'll explore the history of fundamentalism and its impact on denominations in the Wesleyan tradition, the differences in their views on Scripture, and the relationship between modern science and the Christian faith, and much more. In order to help Wesleyan churches remain true to their theology and identity, it's important to understand how our tradition will never be able to fit into a fundamentalist framework.
