In the field of landscape architecture, there is no more distinguished voice than Michael Van Valkenburgh, and so it is appropriate that we begin this new Source Books in Landscape Architecture series with his recently completed Allegheny Riverfront Park project for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As part of the city's efforts to restore its downtown district and riverfront, Van Valkenburgh, along with artists Ann Hamilton and Michael Mercil, developed an ambitious plan to reform the wasted land along the river into an urban refuge. The celebrated collaboration between landscape architect and artists produced a thoughtful, useful, and beautiful park that has successfully renewed the city's core. Source Books in Landscape Architecture, produced in collaboration with Ohio State University, will provide detailed documentation of important new projects.

Designed as a series of discussion-based seminars, the program invites each Glimcher professor to present their work in a three-part framework: influences and process, important works, and a focus on a single project that serves as the subject for a Source Book monograph. The Glimcher professorship and publications offer direct access to leading voices in the profession and promote critical inquiry in contemporary designed landscapes by examining intentionality and results of selected works.

The series is intended to delve beneath the surface of contemporary designed landscapes to look at the intentionality and results, each volume focusing on one project or a group of related works deemed significant to the practice and study of current landscape architecture. The project described and colorfully illustrated here was part of a larger development project in Pittsburgh completed in 2004.
