This handbook presents a compilation and analysis of the published data on the nine microbiological contaminants included on the USEPA’s Contaminant Candidate List. The data are organized within a microbial risk assessment framework and based on human health effects, occurrence in the environment, and the efficacy of water treatment methods. Additional chapters on topics of interest in microbial risk assessment, such as the development of microbial risk assessment, the incorporation of susceptible subpopulations, and risk communication, are included. In light of the events of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent anthrax incidents, the book is appended with a brief introduction of bioterrorism agents that could be used to contaminate drinking water.
