From the hungry days following the defeat of World War I, these citizens prospered under their saviour Adolf Hitler - before he led them into a new war, thus bringing them both adventure and tragedy. From the Home Front to the grim realities of the U-boat war, from war-torn skies to the endless plains of the Russian Front, every one of them became enmeshed in the struggle. Of special interest the tales of German women at war, the "WAAFs" of the Luftwaffe; the Youth Leader whose ambitions propelled her into the SS and espionage; the uncanny escape of Fraulein Brockhaus in the first RAF "1000-bomber" raid; and the account of the plain cook recruited by the Gestapo.
