描述
Delineates the competent levels of nursing care and professional role activities expected of all psychiatric-mental health nurses. Its scope of practice gives the context—the underlying assumptions, characteristics, environments and settings, education and training requirements, key issues and trends, and ethical and conceptual bases of the specialty—needed to understand and use the psychiatric-mental health nursing standards of practice. All psychiatric-mental health nurses are held accountable to these standards, which provide a framework for evaluating outcomes, goals, and their specialty practice. The set of specific competencies accompanying each standard serves as evidence of minimal compliance with that standard.

备用描述
Psychiatric-mental health nursing promotes mental health through the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of human responses to mental health problems and psychiatric disorders. A core mental health profession, it is a specialty that employs a purposeful use of self as its art along with a wide range of nursing, psychosocial, and neurobiological theories and research evidence as its science. Its areas of focus emerge based on current and anticipated societal needs, including disparities in mental health and its care and treatment among the diverse populations.

The prevalence of mental health issues and psychiatric disorders across the age span attest the critical role that psychiatric-mental health nursing must continue to play to meet the goals for a healthy society. Safety issues for patients with psychiatric disorders and the nurses involved in their care are major priorities for this specialty in an environment of fiscal constraints and disparities in reimbursement for mental health services. This book is a succinct and practical distillation of a critical field of nursing and health care.

Psychiatric-Mental Health: Scope and Standards of Practice is a foundational volume that articulates the essentials of psychiatric-mental health nursing, its activities and accountabilities-the who, what, when, where, and how of practice-at all practice levels and settings. Delineating a body of knowledge and an advanced set of applied nursing skills, this book reflects the diverse activities in which psychiatric-mental health nurses are engaged and serves them in their clinical practice, education, research, and community service. It is a core resource for the nurses who have chosen tofocus their professional life in this arena.

The standards themselves-six for nursing practice and nine for nursing professional performance-are those by which all psychiatric-mental nurses practice. Together, along with each standard's set of measurement criteria for general and specialized practice, these reflect the perspectives and priorities of this multidisciplinary specialty. The book's detailed summary discussion of the scope of such practice-its enduring characteristics and ongoing development, its extensive education and training, its numerous practice environments and settings, its many specialized practice roles-lends an expansive context for better understanding and using these standards in the work of psychiatric-mental nurses. While Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice is primarily for practicing nurses, it is also an essential resource for nursing faculty and students, other health care providers, researchers and scholars, and those involved in funding, legal, policy, and regulatory activities.
