描述
本書梳理高山原住民從「現地保留」到「下山種稻」的轉折過程,並透過41張精細的地圖與社會網絡圖,說明泰雅族、賽德克族、太魯閣族、布農族、排灣族、魯凱族如何在移住過程中被打散重組。全書立基於事件時間性,闡明歷史的路徑依賴、時間異質因果、全局偶連性等特性,並駁斥「強制下山乃歷史進程之必然」與「統治者為了分化原住民而推動移住」這兩種常見解釋。本書附錄的「原社沿革表」完整考訂1931年526個原社後來九十年之沿革,並銜接至當代部落;「部落索引表」則可從當代部落查詢其源頭的舊社。此二表也是今後相關研究不可或缺的基礎資料。
