描述
This is unquestionably the most authoritative compact guide to the world of underwater animals that are poisonous, venomous, and electric. Stories concerning dangerous marine organisms are legion. While these hair-raising tales may be useful in holding an audience spellbound, when a diver at a depth of 100 feet or a swimmer on his home beach suddenly comes upon, or is surrounded by, any of these organisms, he or she is more concerned with fact than fantasy. Dr. Bruce Halstead's book describes and fully illustrates these dangerous marine animals, their noxious effects, treatment of ailments resulting from them and, most importantly, how to avoid them. The facts he presents are the result of more than forty years of intensive research by this renowned marine biologist/toxicologist. The illustrations, most of which are in full color, show the animals in their true forms, in their natural habitats, and in detail, allowing the reader to identify all parts of the various marine organisms on sight. The book is not intended to throw needless scares into swimmers, boaters, and divers, but to point out important facts about these dangerous marine animals and to show what to do in emergencies.
Booknews Jaws was just the tip of the iceberg! Actually marine biologist and toxicologist Halstead wants to help swimmers and boaters learn to be careful so they do not have to be afraid. He describes animals of the sea, and a few of fresh-water, that can harm humans either by intention or by being poison to eat; he includes distribution, behavior, drawings, color photographs of the creatures in their natural habitat, and graphic pictures of what they do to us. First published in 1959 and updated from the 1980 edition based on continuing research throughout the world. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
