"Most medical careers follow a similar basic pattern, as shown in figure 1.1. This chapter describes the stages of the 'standard', or at least most straightforward, medical career. Medical school It is essential for all doctors to have a medical degree (e.g. MB BS, MB ChB). There are 33 medical schools in the UK (a further six are accepting students, but are yet to be approved by the GMC): each belongs to a parent university and is partly government funded. Additionally, the UK's first independent medical school opened in 2015. Applications for courses are made online through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (www.ucas.com).
