Most American cities witnessed four well-known transformations from the 1870s to the 1920s: cities became bigger, with denser and more diversified populations; the manufacture of industrial goods grew tremendously, as did the amount and types of services produced; government and community organizations changed from relatively simple to more complex structures; and, above all, cities became the prime locus of assimilation for newcomers in American society.
