描述
[T]he Foundation assembled a multidisciplinary team consisting of architects, psychologists, and persons with considerable correctional experience. Their primary research method was direct observation and on-site evaluations. Scores of field trips were made by three members of the research team a corrections official, an architect, and a psychologist. A total of over 100 new correctional institutions located in 26 states revisited throughout the country. Usually there was complete freedom to speak with the inmates and staff individually and in groups. Every possible attempt was made to observe the housing, treatment, and work situations of the inmate, and impressions were noted and recorded of the overall effect of the physical structure and its location on staff, inmates, and program. Architectural plans for many institutions were acquired and studied. Thousands of photographs were taken. Plans of institutions yet to be built were also examined. --- excerpt from book's Introduction
