This book is concerned with the development of social interchanges: how they originate and how they are maintained and changed over an individual's lifetime. By social interchange, we mean a specific kind of behavior organization in which the acts of one individual contribute to the direction and control of the acts of another individual (or individuals). The interchanges that we will examine include those that are recognized as "attachment" and "aggression," "altruism" and "anger," "gender role" and "sexual development." Hence the issues that we shall deal with concern living, and all of us have had a good deal of living experience of one type or another. Traditional expositions about development and personality have usually begun with earlier theories and have then covered the data. I reverse this, covering first the impressive body of information and ideas on specific problems of social development, rather than attempting to make new findings and concepts fit the molds of earlier theories
