Editing the volume has been a mammoth task partly because few contributors proved either able or willing to follow simple house-style rules, and partly because two of the original contributors had not delivered by September. 'The two Neils' are to be thanked for joining the project in the final phase. Finally, the editor wishes to thank Peter Lodge without whose unfailing support the task could not have been accomplished.
Our experience of the second direct elections to the EP has not robbed us of the belief that a democratically elected EP does have a place in the EC and has an important role to fulfil in the future not least in stimulating debate about the proper compass and purpose of the EC, integration and European Union. We look forward to the third direct elections to the EP in 1989 in a possibly enlarged EC of Twelve. It is to be hoped that by that time some progress will have been made on the outstanding issues of the first direct elections to the EP, such as a uniform electoral procedure, a single EP seat and the EP's role in EC decision-making.
