Art exhibition catalogue of Art Nouveau to 1970 about the Vienna Secession. In Austria 1897, almost in parallell with the Art Nouveau movement, the Vienna Secession was formed. A group of artists, sculptors and architects disillusioned with the Association of Austrian Artists came together to form the society. As with art nouveau, the secession was a protest agianst and movement away from "traditional" art with it's heavily historic influences. There was no single artistic style within the secession, rather it's aim was to expand beyond academic traditions into new, iconic styles. The group built the Secession Building at Vienna's Ringstrasse, commissioning architect Josef Maria Olbrich for the design, in order to exhibit their works. The first of their exhibitions was held in 1898, and throughout it's history it has presented works by Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Charles Robert Ashbee, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Josef Maria Olbrich, Max Klinger, Walter Crane,Giovanni Segantini, Auguste Rodin, Edvard Munch, van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard, Bonnard, Redon, Gauguin, Otto Wagner, Eugene Grasset, Signac, Degas and Arnold Bocklin. The group also produced the periodical Ver Sacrum ( 'sacred spring' ) between January 1898 and October 1903 which frequently contained original artwork by the members in addition to literature and poetry.
