Lyons surveys the films of each artist, providing background information on their lives and careers and in some cases quoting from his interviews with them. Among the 50-odd filmmakers featured are many who are difficult to find in standard reference sources. As a group, they represent a wide variety of cultural perspectives: African American, female, and gay filmmakers are all well represented.
