Dernier fils de l'empereur carolingien Louis Ier le Pieux, le futur Charles II nat en 823 alors que ses frres ont dj reu leur part de l'Empire. Le jeune prince devient, contre leur gr, roi d'Alamanie, puis roi d'Aquitaine. Cependant, dix-sept ans, la mort de son pre, il doit entrer en lutte contre ses ans. C'est aprs trois ans de guerre effrayante qu'est sign entre les trois frres le trait de Verdun qui donne Charles la plus belle part de l'Empire : la France. Roi nergique et infatigable, le jeune Charles s'emploie vaincre les Normands envahisseurs et se faire couronner empereur d'Occident. Roi cultiv, il prolonge dans les lettres et les arts la renaissance carolingienne initie par son grand-pre Charlemagne. Il est le dernier des grands Carolingiens.
