描述
Thoroughly revised and updated, Diabetes Mellitus: A Fundamental and Clinical Text, Second Edition , encompasses the most recent advances in molecular and cellular findings and provides the newest therapeutic modalities for the disease. Adhering to the successful format of the first edition, this text is divided into 10 distinct sections, each containing individual chapters that progress from basic mechanisms to physiology to therapeutics. This book covers the complications of diabetes at both the basic and clinical levels, thus keeping the reader abreast of the latest developments of the disease, and is the perfect complement to Kahn's Joslin's Diabetes Mellitus.
New chapters include the importance of the characterization and cloning of sulfonylurea receptors, the role of lipids and its relationship to glucotoxicity, and the effects of GLP-1 during insulin secretion. Other coverage includes updates on such topics as the identification of "diabetes genes"; prevention and treatment of type I and type II diabetes; the role of GLP-1 and IRS-1 during insulin signaling; engineering of the pancreatic 1⁄4-cell; principles of lipotoxicity and glucotoxicity; the role of adipose tissue in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance associated with obesity; and diet therapy and its effects on the treatment of type I and type II diabetes.
The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.
