C'est sur les instances de M. le chevalier Trelawney, du docteur Livesey et de tous ces messieurs en général, que je me suis décidé à mettre par écrit tout ce que je sais concernant l'île au trésor, depuis A jusqu'à Z, sans rien excepter que la position de l'île, et cela uniquement parce qu'il s'y trouve toujours une partie du trésor. Je prends donc la plume en cet an de grâce 17..., et commence mon récit à l'époque où mon père tenait l'auberge de l'Amiral Benbow, en ce jour où le vieux marin, au visage basané et balafré d'un coup de sabre, vint prendre gîte sous notre toit. -- 4ème de couverture

SQUIRE TRELAWNEY, Dr Livesey, and the rest of these gentlemen having asked me to write down the whole particulars about Treasure Island, from the beginning to the end, keeping nothing back but the bearings of the island, and that only because there is still treasure not yet lifted, I take up my pen in the year of grace 17-, and go back to the time when my father kept the 'Admiral Bendow' inn, and the brown old seaman, with the sabre cut, first took up his lodging under our roof.
