The editors have brought together a very impressive group of contributors for this book who are highly qualified and authoritative. The book is divided into five parts that are uniquely different but essential to cover all aspects of AIDS testing. The book contains an adequate number of simple illustrations. The authors of each chapter provide an excellent list of current and pertinent references. The table of contents is laid out well, and the index is adequate and helpful. The content of this book is excellent and provides valuable information to the reader whether one wishes to know something about the technical aspect of laboratory tests used to detect HIV antibodies or to know how to deal with thesocial, legal, or management aspects of AIDS testing. This book is well written by a number of experienced authorities. This second edition is very welcome because the area of AIDS testing is rapidly and continually changing. It should prove to be a valuable information resource to both health care providers who are well versed in AIDS testing and students as well. The book should be made available through community, university, and medical school libraries and university bookstores.</p>

During the two years since the publication of the first edition of this book, the global spread of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) has continued. HIV was estimated by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1993 to have at least 13 million individuals worldwide, with 1 million infected infected in the United States. HIV/AIDS in the United States has become the leading cause of death among men 25 to 44 years of age and the fifth leading cause of death among women of the same age group. Prevention of HIV infection remains a global challenge. Testing for HIV is the cornerstone for surveillance and prevention programs and for the provision of appropriate medical care for those who are infected. Such testing is equally essential to the search for effective antivirus drugs and vaccines.
