Ethics and the materialist conception of history.: By Karl Kautsky. Translated by John B. Askew Kautsky, Karl, 1854-1938 Charles H. Kerr, 3rd ed., rev., Chicago, Illinois, 1909
Translated by John B. Askew Like so many other Marxist publications the present one owes its origin to a special occasion, it arose out of a controversy. The polemic in which I was involved last Autumn with the editors of Vorwarts brought me to touch on the question of their " ethical tendencies." What I said, however, on this point was so often misunderstood by one side, and on the other brought me so many requests to give a more thorough and systematic exposition of my ideas on Ethics, that I felt constrained to attempt at least to give a short sketch of the development of Ethics on the basis of the materialist conception of history. I take as my starting point, consequently, that materialist philosophy which was founded on one side by Marx and Engels, on the other, though in the same spirit, by Joseph Dietzgen. For the results at which I have arrived I alone am responsible.

Why Do People Sing? : On Voice Paddy Scannell; Polity Press, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Cambridge, UK, 2019
In  Why Do People Sing?  Paddy Scannell explores some of the mysteries at the heart of vocal communication. What explains the communicative musicality of the voices between parent and child as a baby learns to talk? Can readers of fiction hear the voices of authors and characters within soundless written texts? How has radio affected voice, talk, music, and singing, and how has it made them public in new ways? And by putting the voice into recordings, to what extent have broadcasting technologies provided a radically new resource for historians? These questions and more are explored in the first three chapters. In the final chapter, Scannell boldly puts into words the inexpressible experience of listening to singing, wherein the glory of the human voice finds its purest expression. This highly original book makes a distinctive intervention by stressing the inherently positive qualities of talk (rather than language) as the basis for communication. Concise and beautifully written, it is suitable for students and scholars of media, communication, and other disciplines across the humanities, as well as general readers with an interest in this fascinating topic. Review “Scannell’s book is a gem – distinctive and original. His commitment to a broad phenomenology of communication and the media offers an approach unlike anything else in the field, and his historical insights about the development of talk in broadcasting are unrivaled.” Martin Montgomery, University of Macau “In this probing set of personal meditations, Paddy Scannell plumbs our existential depths as interactive animals who find our ultimate meaning and freedom in the play of music and voice.” John Durham Peters, Yale University About the Author Paddy Scannell is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Michigan.

The Political Theory of Che Guevara Llorente Deaprtment of Philosophy Saint Louis University, Renzo Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Incorporated, London, 2018
Nearly half a century after his death, Ernesto “Che” Guevara remains a compelling and controversial figure. He was an original social theorist, and many of his writings attest to an innovative interpretation of various concepts and commitments central to Marxist thought. This is one of the first works to comprehensively consider his contribution to social and political theory for a student audience. Firstly, the book provides thorough and reliable accounts of the key theses, concepts and commitments that give Che Guevara’s theoretical, and political, orientation its distinctive character. It addresses Guevara’s views on topics such as work, morality in socialism, egalitarianism, prefigurative politics, internationalism, and the process of “disembourgeoisement”. Secondly, the study situates Guevara’s ideas within the context of the Marxist theoretical tradition and, on the other hand, twentieth-century Latin American social thought. To this end, it will explore both the affinities and dissimilarities between Guevara's views on certain fundamental questions and the views represented by such figures as Marx, Lenin, Herbert Marcuse and José Carlos Mariátegui. Finally, The Political Thought of Che Guevara will provide critical assessments of Che’s key ideas, many of which remain relevant to contemporary debates in socialist theory. ** Review This remarkable essay is a reliable and insightful guide to Guevara's thought and to his legacy for the Socialism of the 21st Century. One can easily conclude from this analysis of Guevara's Marxist Humanism and revolutionary ethics, how little he had to do with Stalinism, and how much he had in common with the Latin American Marxist tradition initiated by José Carlos Mariategui. (Michael Löwy, author of The Marxism of Che Guevara) Llorente’s book provides a fascinating examination of Guevara’s political ideas on revolution, anti-imperialism, socialist construction, consciousness and social-relations. The author frames Guevara in relation to radical social theory. Llorente has extensive knowledge of Guevara’s writings and speeches and explores these drawing out connections with the work of Marx, Lenin, Trotsky, Lukacs, and others who have contributed to Marxist theory and socialist praxis. (Helen Yaffe, Economic History Fellow, London School of Economics) This is an important reading of Che's life and work and a major contribution to our understanding of Che's political theory. Further, it is. indispensable for all those open to the possibility of "being like Che" arriving as it does at a time when "being like Che" carries with it a special political and moral urgency. Doctrine and Practice in Medieval Korean Buddhism: The Collected Works of Ŭich’ŏn (Korean Classics Library: Philosophy and Religion) McBride, Richard D.; University of Hawai'i Press, University of Hawai'i, Honolulu, 2017
Ŭich’ŏn (1055-1101) is recognized as a Buddhist master of great stature in the East Asian tradition. Born a prince in the medieval Korean state of Koryŏ (960-1279), he traveled to Song China (960-1279) to study Buddhism and later compiled and published the first collection of East Asian exegetical texts. According to the received scholarly tradition, after returning to Korea, Ŭich’ŏn left the Hwaŏm (Huayan) school to found a new Ch’ŏnt’ae (Tiantai) school when he realized that the synthesis between doctrinal learning and meditative practice in the latter would help bring together the discordant sects of Koryŏ Buddhism. In the late twentieth century, however, scholars began to question the assertion that Ŭich’ŏn forsook one school for another, arguing that his writings assembled in The Collected Works of State Preceptor Taegak (Taegak kuksa munjip) do not portray a committed sectarian but a monk dedicated to developing a sophisticated and rigorous system of monastic education that encompassed all Buddhist intellectual traditions. In this first comprehensive study of Ŭich’ŏn’s life and work in English, Richard McBride presents translations of select lectures, letters, essays, and poetry from The Collected Works to provide a more balanced view of Ŭich’ŏn’s philosophy of life and understanding of key Buddhist teachings. The translations center on the monk’s activities in the pan-East Asian Buddhist world and his compilation of scholarly texts, writings related to his interactions with royalty, and correspondence with his Chinese mentor, Jinshui Jingyuan (1011-1088). By incorporating Ŭich’ŏn’s work associated with doctrinal Buddhism and his poetry, McBride clearly shows that even in his most personal work Ŭich’ŏn did not abandon Hwaŏm teachings for those of the Ch’ŏnt’ae but rather he encouraged monks to blend the best learning from all doctrinal traditions with meditative practice. **

Art and Reform in the Late Renaissance: After Trent (Visual Culture in Early Modernity) edited by Jesse M. Locker Routledge, Taylor et Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), New York, 2018
Drawing on recent research by established and emerging scholars of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century art, this volume reconsiders the art and architecture produced after 1563 across the conventional geographic borders. Rather than considering this period a degraded afterword to Renaissance classicism or an inchoate proto-Baroque, the book seeks to understand the art on its own terms. By considering artists such as Federico Barocci and Stefano Maderno in Italy, Hendrick Goltzius in the Netherlands, Antoine Caron in France, Francisco Ribalta in Spain, and Bartolomeo Bitti in Peru, the contributors highlight lesser known "reforms" of art from outside the conventional centers. As the first text to cover this formative period from an international perspective, this volume casts new light on the aftermath of the Renaissance and the beginnings of "Baroque." ** About the Author Jesse M. Locker is Associate Professor of Art History at Portland State University.

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/The Rimbaud of Leeds_ The Polit - Christine Regan.epub
The Rimbaud of Leeds : The Political Character of Tony Harrison's Poetry Regan, Christine Cambria Press, Cambria Press, Amherst, New York, 2016
This book examines the political meanings of Tony Harrison's imaginative works and offers a reassessment of the poet's political character. While Harrison's class political analysis has been central to much of the discussion of his poetry, his concern with colonialism still generates relatively little commentary. The nature of his republicanism and its importance for his poetry has been neglected, while his humanism tends to be seen as at odds with his politics. This study discusses Harrison's concern with internal colonialism in the United Kingdom and internationalist anti-colonial poetic. It witnesses the radical political inclusiveness of his humanism and his giving the dispossessed a voice in his high cultural poetry. Particular attention is accorded to his ambiguous identification with John Milton as a great republican poet, his location of Milton and himself in a radical republican literary lineage, and his wider excavation of that lineage. It also illuminates Harrison's unnoticed elective affinity with Arthur Rimbaud as a regional poet with the wrong accent, as 'a hoodlum poet' who fell silent and became an explorer and fortune-seeker in Africa, as a white 'négre', and as the great outsider now fêted as a high cultural poet. Harrison's political convictions and loyalties will be shown to be consistent in the different historical, literary, and social contexts that the poems take as their subjects, or that are opened up by their allusive fields. The book will newly establish that the creative dialectical interplay between the class, anti-colonial, and radical republican and humanist aspects of the poetry, and his literary elective affinities, are essential for understanding the aesthetics and the politics of the Rimbaud of Leeds. The Rimbaud of Leeds is a literary contextual study of the political meanings of important poems by the Leeds poet Tony Harrison (1937 - ). It is based primarily on an examination of Harrison's non-dramatic original poetry that appears in The Loiners (1970), the ongoing sonnet sequence The School of Eloquence (1978- ), and the separately published v. (1985), while presenting that work within an awareness of his complete oeuvre. Reference and illuminating comparison is made to other germane works, to Harrison's account of his work in interviews and prefaces, and to his newly available letters, notebooks, and manuscripts. The principal focus of the book is the political character of the poetry. The poems selected for examination are exemplars of what I argue is Harrison's radical humanist and republican poetic, and of how issues of class and colonialism are interrelated in the poetry. The book locates the works in previously unnoticed or neglected contexts, and shows the critical importance of history for understanding the poems. It reveals Harrison's detailed engagement with the politics and history of England and Africa in particular. New contextual information necessary for understanding the political, historical, biographical and literary references in the poems is offered in the book, and it sketches the key political and aesthetic features of the poetry. **

from introduction: "[..]the theoretical aspiration of the Ljubljana School of Psychoanalysis is to make use of Hegel’s philosophy in order to rigorously re-examine not only the Hegelian concepts of teleology, absolute knowledge, providence, cunning of reason, or absolute religion, but also of all the concepts of Nietzsche’s, Heidegger’s, or of the proponents of linguistic turn and postmodernism, the concepts of eternal recurrence, Geschick, the open processes of language games and deconstructions, to name just a few. It could be said that the only way to restart history, which had ended according to Hegel, was to end the post-Hegelian end of grand narratives."

Inventing The Pinkertons; Or, Spies, Sleuths, Mercenaries, And Thugs: Being A Story Of The Nation’s Most Famous (and Infamous) Detective Agency S. Paul O'Hara Johns Hopkins University Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, Maryland, 2016
The fascinating story of the most notorious detective agency in US history.Between 1865 and 1937, Pinkerton's National Detective Agency was at the center of countless conflicts between capital and labor, bandits and railroads, and strikers and state power. Some believed that the detectives were protecting society from dangerous criminal conspiracies; others thought that armed Pinkertons were capital's tool to crush worker dissent. Yet the image of the Pinkerton detective also inspired romantic and sensationalist novels, reflected shifting ideals of Victorian manhood, and embodied a particular kind of rough frontier justice. Inventing the Pinkertons examines the evolution of the agency as a pivotal institution in the cultural history of American monopoly capitalism. Historian S. Paul O'Hara intertwines political, social, and cultural history to reveal how Scottish-born founder Allan Pinkerton insinuated his way to power and influence as a purveyor of valuable (and often wildly wrong) intelligence in the Union cause. During Reconstruction, Pinkerton turned his agents into icons of law and order in the Wild West. Finally, he transformed his firm into a for-rent private army in the war of industry against labor. Having begun life as peddlers of information and guardians of mail bags, the Pinkertons became armed mercenaries, protecting scabs and corporate property from angry strikers.O'Hara argues that American capitalists used the Pinkertons to enforce new structures of economic and political order. Yet the infamy of the Pinkerton agent also gave critics and working communities a villain against which to frame their resistance to the new industrial order. Ultimately, Inventing the Pinkertons is a gripping look at how the histories of American capitalism, industrial folklore, and the nation-state converged.

Rethinking Civic Participation in Democratic Theory and Practice (The Theories, Concepts and Practices of Democracy) Rod Dacombe; Dacombe.; Finotello Palgrave Macmillan UK : Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, London, 2018
This book makes an important contribution to contemporary debates over the place of civic participation in democratic theory and practice. Drawing on a detailed case study of the Blackbird Leys area of Oxford, the book employs a novel empirical approach to ask whether widespread participation in civic life can enhance the prospects for democracy, given the low levels of participation which tend to exist in deprived areas. Throughout, it presents an account of participation rooted in the history and development of the case, in order to avoid the kinds of abstraction which are characteristic of many existing studies in the area. The book will appeal to scholars working on democratic theory in applied settings, and will be of interest to anyone concerned with inequalities in civic participation.**** ** Review “This timely book makes a valuable contribution to the literature on participatory democracy, providing a nuanced account of the relationship between civic participation and deprivation, and highlighting the importance of placing the analysis of democracy in its proper context.” (Professor Matthew Flinders, University of Sheffield and Chair, Political Studies Association) “This book has an old fashioned ring to it in that it grapples with long-standing debates in democratic theory and offers a detailed community study to explore the issues. But its thoughtful and in-depth approach does deliver new insights and ultimately a message of hope that even a neighbourhood suffering from deprivation and social isolation has within it the capacity for community action and political participation.” (Professor Gerry Stoker, University of Southampto) EN-US">“Supporters of more intensive forms of civic participation have always faced one big challenge: their desired reforms could result in larger political inequality through giving more voice to the most resource rich members of the community. Dacombe’s book makes an important contribution to this debate. Through a rich case study of a deprived community, he illuminates many of the existing tensions between poverty and participation. The analysis provides an interesting answer to the criticisms raised by minimalist democrats to participatory democracy, without making an uncritical appraisal of the limits and problems that participation in deprived settings has in real life. The richness of the book theoretical dialogues and of the empirical materials make it useful for several areas of research, from democratic innovations, to third sector research and from local politics to research trying to understand the structural explanations of participation.” (Professor Joan Font, Instituto de Estudios Sociales Avancados, Spain) “Too often in democratic theory, citizens and their various forms of participation (and non-participation) are analysed in abstraction from social context. In this luminous book, Rod Dacombe rectifies this deficit, painting a fascinating picture of democratic participation in an area of deprivation in contemporary Britain and illustrating the possibilities, expectations, limitations and inequalities of democratic participation ‘at street level'. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in participatory democratic theory and practice.” (Dr Amanda Machin, Zeppelin University, Germany) From the Back Cover This book makes an important contribution to contemporary debates over the place of civic participation in democratic theory and practice.

The Irish Abortion Journey, 1920–2018 (Genders and Sexualities in History) Lindsey Earner-Byrne; Diane Urquhart Springer International Publishing, Imprint Palgrave Pivot, Springer Nature, Cham, Switzerland, 2019
This book reframes the Irish abortion narrative within the history of women’s reproductive health and explores the similarities and differences that shaped the history of abortion within the two states on the island of Ireland. Since the legalisation of abortion in Britain in 1967, an estimated 200,000 women have travelled from Ireland to England for an abortion. However, this abortion trail is at least a century old and began with women migrating to Britain to flee moral intolerance in Ireland towards unmarried mothers and their offspring. This study highlights how attitudes to unmarried motherhood reflected a broader cultural acceptance that morality should trump concerns regarding maternal health. This rationale bled into social and political responses to birth control and abortion and was underpinned by an acknowledgement that in prioritising morality some women would die. ** From the Back Cover ‘The first fully comprehensive, accessible account of Irish women's struggle for bodily autonomy against powerful male-dominated institutions of state and society. It maps the historical context of the island, the prevailing norms and mores over the decades, the similarities and differences in both states, and firmly place women's value and autonomy as citizens within that, highlighting the hypocrisy, misogyny and careless attitudes that prevented and continue to prevent women from determining their own morality. It charts an amazing journey that is far from over, and articulates a narrative that many people will recognise.’ Dawn Purvis, Former Director of Marie Stopes UK, Northern Ireland This book reframes the Irish abortion narrative within the history of women’s reproductive health and explores the similarities and differences that shaped the history of abortion within the two states on the island of Ireland. What's Left Of Me (the Hybrid Chronicles) Zhang, Kat HarperCollins Publishers Limited, 2011
Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else--two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren't they settling? Why isn't one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn't... For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she's still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable-hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet...for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything.

Building Character: The Racial Politics of Modern Architectural Style (Culture Politics & the Built Environment) Charles L. Davis, II, Charles L. Davis University of Pittsburgh Press, Culture Politics & the Built Environment, 1, 2019
In the nineteenth-century paradigm of architectural organicism, the notion that buildings possessed character provided architects with a lens for relating the buildings they designed to the populations they served. Advances in scientific race theory enabled designers to think of “race” and “style” as manifestations of natural law: just as biological processes seemed to inherently regulate the racial characters that made humans a perfect fit for their geographical contexts, architectural characters became a rational product of design. Parallels between racial and architectural characters provided a rationalist model of design that fashioned some of the most influential national building styles of the past, from the pioneering concepts of French structural rationalism and German tectonic theory to the nationalist associations of the Chicago Style, the Prairie Style, and the International Style. In __Building Character__, Charles Davis traces the racial charge of the architectural writings of five modern theorists—Eugene Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, Gottfried Semper, Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and William Lescaze—to highlight the social, political, and historical significance of the spatial, structural, and ornamental elements of modern architectural styles.

Visions of the Land: Science, Literature, and the American Environment from the Era of Exploration to the Age of Ecology (Under the Sign of Nature: Explorations in Environmental Humanities) Michael A. Bryson University of Virginia Press, Under the sign of nature, explorations in ecocriticism, Charlottesville (Va.), 2002
The work of John Charles Fremont, Richard Byrd, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, John Wesley Powell, Susan Cooper, Rachel Carson, and Loren Eiseley represents a widely divergent body of writing. Yet despite their range of genres—including exploration narratives, technical reports, natural histories, scientific autobiographies, fictional utopias, nature writing, and popular scientific literature—these seven authors produced strikingly connected representations of nature and the practice of science in America from about 1840 to 1970. Michael A. Bryson provides a thoughtful examination of the authors, their work, and the ways in which science and nature unite them. Visions of the Land explores how our environmental attitudes have influenced and been shaped by various scientific perspectives from the time of western expansion and geographic exploration in the mid-nineteenth century to the start of the contemporary environmental movement in the twentieth century. Bryson offers a literary-critical analysis of how writers of different backgrounds, scientific training, and geographic experiences represented nature through various kinds of natural science, from natural history to cartography to resource management to ecology and evolution, and in the process, explored the possibilities and limits of science itself. Visions of the Land examines the varied, sometimes conflicting, but always fascinating ways in which we have defined the relations among science, nature, language, and the human community. Ultimately, it is an extended meditation on the capacity of using science to live well within nature. ** About the Author Michael A. Bryson is Associate Professor of Humanities at Evelyn T. Stone University College, Roosevelt University.

Geoffrey Hartman : Criticism As Answerable Style G. Douglas Atkins; Professor and Coordinator of Graduate Studies G Douglas Atkins Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 1990
`The critic explicitly acknowledges his dependence on prior words that make his word a kind of answer. He calls to other texts "that they might answer him."' Geoffrey Hartman is the first book devoted to an exploration of the intellectual poetry' of the critic who, whether or not he represents the future of the profession', is a unique and major voice in twentieth-century criticism. Professor Atkins explains clearly Hartman's key ideas and places his work in the contexts of Romanticism and Judaism on which he has written extensively. In Geoffrey Hartman he provides a valuable introduction to a major critical voice who has called into question our assumptions about the distinction between commentary and imaginative literature. **

Islam and Competing Nationalisms in the Middle East, 1876-1926 (The Modern Muslim World) Kamal Soleimani Palgrave Macmillan US, Springer Nature, New York, 2016
Opposing a binary perspective that consolidates ethnicity, religion, and nationalism into separate spheres, this book demonstrates that neither nationalism nor religion can be studied in isolation in the Middle East. Religious interpretation, like other systems of meaning-production, is affected by its historical and political contexts, and the processes of interpretation and religious translation bleed into the institutional discourses and processes of nation-building. This book calls into question the foundational epistemologies of the nation-state by centering on the pivotal and intimate role Islam played in the emergence of the nation-state, showing the entanglements and reciprocities of nationalism and religious thought as they played out in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century Middle East. The Worst Is Yet to Come : A Post-Capitalist Survival Guide Peter Fleming Repeater Books, Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), [N.p.], 2019
Capitalism is about to commit suicide and is threatening to take us down with it. But will it give way to a grand social utopia or the beginning of a new dark age... albeit WiFi enabled? The Worst is Yet to Come explores the disturbing possibility that the current crisis of neoliberal capitalism isn’t going to spawn an emancipatory renaissance, but a world that is much, much worse. Wealthy CEOs see it. They’ve been purchasing isolated bunker-retreats in New Zealand for when the shit goes down. Our politicians know it too, and are frantically transforming the liberal state into a militarized machine. Scientists are either uselessly decrying the looming eco-catastrophe or jumping on the opportunity to conduct ever-reckless experiments with the human genome. The animal kingdom is retreating from the scene in terrible silence, preferring the swift demise of the abattoir’s bolt-gun than witnessing what is about to happen. Yet some of us are still ignoring the warning signs, choosing instead to remain cheerfully optimistic, believing that society has probably hit rock bottom and the only way is up. This book argues the opposite. What if we haven’t hit rock bottom and are on the precipice of something much worse? And what if were too late? But this grim prospect isn't submitted in the name of millennial fatalism or hopeless resignation. On the contrary, if our grandchildren are to survive the implosion of capitalism – for the chances we will are fairly slim – then a realistic picture of the nightmare to come is crucial. Only an unwavering attitude of “revolutionary pessimism” will help us to prepare accordingly. For the apocalypse will almost certainly be disappointing.

Inventing The Pinkertons; Or, Spies, Sleuths, Mercenaries, And Thugs: Being A Story Of The Nation’s Most Famous (and Infamous) Detective Agency Pinkerton's National Detective Agency.;O'Hara, S. Paul;Pinkerton, Allan Johns Hopkins University Press, 1, 2016
The fascinating story of the most notorious detective agency in US history. Between 1865 and 1937, Pinkerton's National Detective Agency was at the center of countless conflicts between capital and labor, bandits and railroads, and strikers and state power. Having begun life as peddlers of information and guardians of mail bags, the Pinkertons became armed mercenaries, protecting scabs and corporate property from angry strikers. O'Hara argues that American capitalists used the Pinkertons to enforce new structures of economic and political order. Yet the infamy of the Pinkerton agent also gave critics and working communities a villain against which to frame their resistance to the new industrial order. Ultimately, Inventing the Pinkertons is a gripping look at how the histories of American capitalism, industrial folklore, and the nation-state converged.

Alamo Theory Josh Bell Copper Canyon Press : Made available through hoopla, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), [N.p.], 2016
"Bell's work is a concoction of the surreal and the hyper-real, the hilarious and the devastating."— The New Yorker "One of the most tonally versatile young poets working today."— Boston Review “In poems that look dense but read in a fluid, easy tumble, Bell offers [in Alamo Theory ] characters and scenarios that border on the surreal (‘no one’s getting/ off this tractor alive, no one without/ a pod of vanilla, Stuck like a witch’s/ finger in the throat’) yet are grounded in everyday discontents (‘Apologies/ to the inhabitants of the condo/ next to my condo’). The observations are arresting and almost witty, almost wry, and a character named Josh occasionally wanders along to engage with others. Fittingly, voice (and the voice box) feature thematically, as reading this work is like listening raptly to a verbose, intensely smart friend expatiate on life.”— Library Journal "A contemporary knockout, Bell's poems run the gamut of good: they're seriously funny, bizarre, wry, ambitious, acrobatic, gorgeous. Sometimes they have zombies."— Flavorwire Joshua Bell's unnerving and darkly funny second collection of poems inhabits various personae—including a prominent series starring the garrulous and aging rock star Vince Neil from Mötley Crüe—through which he examines paranoid, misogynist, and murderous elements within contemporary American culture. Throughout are prose "movie poems" that feature zombies, a summer camp slasher, exorcism, and courtroom drama. From "The Creature": Like many humans, I enjoy lifting small, living things. Your wife qualifies, but doesn't like to be lifted. I guess it's probably because, as is true with many humans, your wife doesn't want to be eaten, and often we are lifted, by the bigger thing, right before it drops us on a rock and eats us. I understand, I say to your wife, lowering her body to the kitchen floor, her legs bending slowly as she takes back the weight I've returned to her, like an astronaut moving back into the gravity of the capsule… Josh Bell earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and a PhD from the University of Cincinnati. He was a member of the creative writing faculty at Columbia University and is currently Briggs Copeland Lecturer at Harvard. **

Profit over people : neoliberalism and the global order Noam Chomsky, Robert Waterman McChesney Seven Stories ; Turnaround, Seven Stories Press 1st ed., New York, New York State, 1999
In Profit Over People Noam Chomsky takes on neoliberalism, the pro-corporate system of economic and political policies presently waging a form of class war worldwide. By examining the contradictions between the democratic and market principles proclaimed by those in power and those actually practiced, Chomsky critiques the tyranny of the few that restricts the public arena and enacts policies that vastly increase private wealth, often with complete disregard for social and ecological consequences. In clear, understandable language, Chomksy charts the dramatic shift away from a public-interest interpretation of democracy and toward a top-down model that serves the profit incentive of massive corporations. Profit Over People also presents Chomsky's thoughts on free market philosophy, corporate control of public opinion, and the unreported impact of nondemocratic forces and policies like the World Trade Organization, International Monetary Fund, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the Multilateral Agreement on Investment--and the widespread resistance movements that often emerge to oppose them.Combining detailed historical examples and uncompromising criticism, Chomsky offers a profound sense of hope that social activism can reclaim people's rights as citizens rather than as consumers, redefining democracy as a global movement, not a global market.

György Ligeti's Cultural Identities Amy Marie Bauer; Márton Kerékfy; Taylor & Francis (Londyn) Routledge, an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2018
Since György Ligeti’s death in 2006, there has been a growing acknowledgement of how central he was to the late twentieth-century cultural landscape. This collection is the first book devoted to exploring the composer’s life and music within the context of his East European roots, revealing his dual identities as both Hungarian national and cosmopolitan modernist. Contributors explore the artistic and socio-cultural contexts of Ligeti’s early works, including composition and music theory, the influence of East European folk music, notions of home and identity, his ambivalent attitude to his Hungarian past and his references to his homeland in his later music. Many of the valuable insights offered profit from new research undertaken at the Paul Sacher Foundation, Basel, while also drawing on the knowledge of long-time associates such as the composer’s assistant, Louise Duchesneau. The contributions as a whole reveal Ligeti’s thoroughly cosmopolitan milieu and values, and illuminate why his music continues to inspire new generations of performers, composers and listeners. ** About the Author Amy Bauer is Associate Professor of Music at the University of California, Irvine. She received her PhD in music theory from Yale University, and has published articles in Music Analysis, The Journal of Music Theory, Contemporary Music Review, Indiana Theory Review , and Ars Lyrica , and book chapters on the music of Ligeti, Messiaen, Chávez, Lang, the television musical, modernist opera, and issues in the philosophy and reception of modernist music. Her monograph Ligeti’s Laments: Nostalgia, Exoticism and the Absolute (Ashgate, 2011) provides a critical analysis of the composer’s works, considering both the compositions themselves and the larger cultural implications of their reception. Márton Kerékfy is Research Fellow at the Budapest Bartók Archives, Editor of the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition and Editor-in-Chief at Editio Musica Budapest. He studied musicology and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and received his PhD in musicology from the same institution. His doctoral thesis (2014) explores the influence of East European folk music in György Ligeti’s music. He has published articles in, among others, Tempo , Studia Musicologica and Mitteilungen der Paul Sacher Stiftung on the music of Ligeti and Bartók. He translated into Hungarian and edited Ligeti’s selected writings (2010).

Invictus : Nelson Mandela and the game that made a nation Carlin, John Rough Guides, Place of publication not identified, 2009
Soon to be a major motion picture from Academy Award(r)—winning director Clint Eastwood, starring Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman. After being released from prison and winning South Africa's first free election, Nelson Mandela presided over a country still deeply divided by fifty years of apartheid. His plan was ambitious if not far-fetched: Use the national rugby team, the Springboks-long an embodiment of white supremacist rule-to embody and engage a new South Africa as they prepared to host the 1995 World Cup. The string of wins that followed not only defied the odds, but capped Mandela's miraculous effort to bring South Africans together in a hard-won, enduring bond. Sports

Visual Cultures of the Ethnic Chinese in Indonesia Abidin Kusno a Professor at the Institute of Asian Research and Director of the Centre for Southeast Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, London, 2016
Visual Cultures of the Ethnic Chinese in Indonesia explores how visual representations shaped and were shaped by how the ethnic Chinese confronted the period of economic dislocation and radical social change during Dutch colonialism and the nationalist struggles in the decolonized Indonesia (including the post-1965 and 1998 social environments). How did the ethnic Chinese communities (re)present themselves to both their domestic and outside world under the changing regimes of representation? How did they visualize, symbolically, their place in Indonesian society? How did the visual shape the “ambiguities” of the Chinese, the perception of the “economic” identity, and the forgetting of their involvement in politics, cultures and histories of the nation? More broadly, how did the visual address the interconnectedness of domestic life, the urban cultural milieu, and ideologies of the state and the ruling class? The book is a response to two paradoxical socio-political phenomena whose convergence is shaping the experience and conceptualization of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia. On the one hand, the economic, technological and cultural forces of colonialism and globalization have created conditions for the formation of ethnic Chinese capital(ists), while on the other, the state generated identity and identification constituted the discourses of othering the ethnic Chinese as “foreign” minority. ** Review One of the key strengths of this book is the careful contextualization of visual images in different time periods, showing how they communicated responses to opportunities and challenges for Indonesian Chinese in their evolving relations with Indonesian society and the Indonesian state. Another strength is Kusnos’s ability to draw on memories of his own experiences of growing up in Indonesia in the post-1965 period. ( Indonesia ) This brilliant collection affirms Abidin Kusno’s place as a singularly insightful commentator on Indonesian ethnic Chinese experiences as illuminated through the lenses of visuality, the built environment, and memory. The essays offer refreshingly revealing accounts of the varied urban landscapes and visual media through which ethnic Chinese have imagined themselves and their troubled yet integral place in modern Indonesia. (Karen Strassler, Associate Professor, The Graduate Center- City University of New York (CUNY)) Visual Cultures of the Ethnic Chinese in Indonesia is an excellent collection of essays and a major contribution to a new and exciting field of research. Kusno convincingly argues how visual modes of representation (film, family photographs, architecture and the built environment) expressed and shaped the experiences of the ethnic Chinese under changing landscapes of power. A pioneering work! (Peter Post, Senior Researcher, The Netherlands Institute of War Documentation) This is a very informative and thoughtful book on visual cultures of Chinese Indonesians. Using visual materials to explain and visualize the subject matter, Dr. Abidin Kusno has successfully presented a complex picture of the Chinese Indonesian culture and identity in the changing socio-cultural and political landscape. A highly recommended book. (Leo Suryadinata, Professor, ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, Singapore) Kusno forges new ground for understandings of Indonesia’s ethnic Chinese, their identity and culture over time. This book brings into focus a minority group who occupied the role of economic middleman in colonial and post-colonial Indonesia, and for whom the domestic and commercial spheres, rather than the political, were sites for cultural expression and for negotiating their sense of belonging in the wider society. Until now, these have been under-examined in the literature. Kusno presents new sites for historical analysis of the ethnic Chinese, from the family photo album, the commercial shophouse where many lived and worked, to representations on film; and in doing so enriches greatly what is known about how this minority has imagined itself, its place in the Indonesian nation in the past, and for the future. (Jemma Purdey, Research Fellow in the Faculty of Arts and the Australia Indonesia Centre, Monash University) About the Author Abidin Kusno is a Professor at Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University, Toronto, Canada.

Political Conversion: Personal Transformation as Strategic Public Communication (Lexington Studies in Political Communication) Don Waisanen Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Lanham, Maryland, 2018
Stories of religious conversion have been told for millennia. Yet many prominent figures such as Ronald Reagan, Hillary Clinton, and Rick Perry have also used stories of their change from one political worldview to another as a communication strategy aimed at winning the hearts and minds of the public. This book is about political conversion stories in public discourse, in their evolution from and interactions with religion. From a historical perspective, it charts the development of conversion narratives from religious contexts to their contemporary applications as specifically political messages. Since these narratives continue to be used in the culture wars, this book examines several related autobiographies that contributed to the use of this strategy in contemporary U.S. politics. Each case shows how shifts during the postwar period called for conversion texts under varying guises, and illustrates how and why the majority of these stories have been of conversions from the ideological left to the right. Examining political conversion as a form of public persuasion, Political Conversion ultimately provides insight into what these types of civic-religious stories mean for democratic communication and communities. ** Review This book stands out among the many works on political rhetoric, offering an insightful examination of the political conversion narrative through four case studies. Fascinating and well written. (Renita Coleman, University of Texas) About the Author Don Waisanen is associate professor in the Baruch College, CUNY Marxe School of Public and International Affairs. Devil's Advocates: Antichrist Amy Simmons, Bernard McGinn Auteur Publishing in partnership with Liverpool University Press, Oxford University Press USA, Leighton Buzzard, 2015
Written and directed by Lars von Trier, one of the most influential and provocative filmmakers working today, Antichrist (2009), tells a story of parental loss, mourning and despair that result from the tragic death of a child. When the film screened at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, it split audiences down the middle. Some attacked von Trier for misogyny (amongst other things), while others defended him for creating a daring and poetic portrait of grief and separation. Dense, shocking, and thought-provoking, Antichrist is a film which calls for careful analysis and in her Devil's Advocate on the film Amy Simmons follows an account of the film's making with an in-depth consideration of the themes and issues arising from it – the ambiguous depiction of the natural world, the shifting gender power relations, its reflections on Christianity and the limitations of rationality. At the film's heart, says the author, is a heartbreaking depiction of grief-stricken parents, a confounding interplay between psychology and psychosis, misogyny, and empowerment. ** About the Author Amy Simmons is a U.K.-based freelance writer whose work has appeared in Sight and Sound , Time Out London , and Little White Lies .

Mathematical curiosities : a treasure trove of unexpected entertainments Alfred S. Posamentier; Alfred S. Posamentier; Ingmar Lehmann Prometheus Books, Publishers, Amherst, New York, 2014
An innovative and appealing way for the layperson to develop math skills--while actually enjoying it Most people agree that math is important, but few would say it's fun. This book will show you that the subject you learned to hate in high school can be as entertaining as a witty remark, as engrossing as the mystery novel you can't put down--in short, fun! As veteran math educators Posamentier and Lehmann demonstrate, when you realize that doing math can be enjoyable, you open a door into a world of unexpected insights while learning an important skill. The authors illustrate the point with many easily understandable examples. One of these is what mathematicians call the "Ruth-Aaron pair" (714 and 715), named after the respective career home runs of Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron. These two consecutive integers contain a host of interesting features, one of which is that their prime factors when added together have the same sum. The authors also explore the unusual aspects of such numbers as 11 and 18, which have intriguing properties usually overlooked by standard math curriculums. And to make you a better all-around problem solver, a variety of problems is presented that appear simple but have surprisingly clever solutions. If math has frustrated you over the years, this delightful approach will teach you many things you thought were beyond your reach, while conveying the key message that math can and should be anything but boring.;Arithmetic curiosities -- Geometric curiosities -- Curious problems with curious solutions -- Mean curiosities -- The unusual world of fractions.

The Beach of Falesa (The Art of the Novella) Robert Louis Stevenson Melville House Publishing, The Art of the Novella, 2012
"White men die very suddenly in Falesá." Originally censored by its British publisher, The Beach at Falesá is a scathing critique of colonialism and economic imperialism that bravely takes on many of the 19th Century’ s strongest taboos: miscegenation, imperialism, and economic exploitation. It does so with a story that features a surprising and beguiling romance between an adventurous British trader and a young island girl, against a background of increasing—and mysterious—hostility. Are the native islanders plotting against the couple, or is it the other white traders? The result is a denouement that is astonishing in its violence. Told in the unadorned voice of the trader, it is a story that deftly combines the form of the exotic adventure yarn with the moral and psychological questing of great fiction. **The Art of The Novella Series **Too short to be a novel, too long to be a short story, the novella is generally unrecognized by academics and publishers. Nonetheless, it is a form beloved and practiced by literature's greatest writers. In the Art Of The Novella series, Melville House celebrates this renegade art form and its practitioners with titles that are, in many instances, presented in book form for the first time. ** Review "I wanted them all, even those I'd already read." —Ron Rosenbaum, *The New York Observer * "Small wonders." —*Time Out London * " [F]irst-rate…astutely selected and attractively packaged…indisputably great works." —Adam Begley, *The New York Observer * "I’ve always been haunted by Bartleby, the proto-slacker. But it’s the handsomely minimalist cover of the Melville House edition that gets me here, one of many in the small publisher’s fine 'Art of the Novella' series." —*The New Yorker * "The Art of the Novella series is sort of an anti-Kindle. What these singular, distinctive titles celebrate is book-ness. They're slim enough to be portable but showy enough to be conspicuously consumed—tiny little objects that demand to be loved for the commodities they are." —KQED (NPR San Francisco) "Some like it short, and if you're one of them, Melville House, an independent publisher based in Brooklyn, has a line of books for you... elegant-looking paperback editions ...a good read in a small package." —*The Wall Street Journal * About the Author Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1850, the son of a prominent engineer famous for building lighthouses. Although expected to continue the family profession, Stevenson’s earliest interests were literary. He studied law and was admitted to the bar but never practiced. Suffering from lifelong respiratory illness, he traveled extensively in search of a beneficial climate, living in Switzerland, the United States, and the Polynesian Islands. His first book was a travel book about a French canoe trip, but he soon branched out into poetry and fiction, including his massively popular children’s adventures Kidnapped and Treasure Island , as well as more subtle and morally ambiguous work such as his classic science fiction The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde . He died in Samoa in 1894. "White men die very suddenly in Falesá." Crowds and Party Dean, Jodi Random House Publishing Services, New York State, 2016
How do mass protests become an organized activist collective? Crowds and Party channels the energies of the riotous crowds who took to the streets in the past five years into an argument for the political party. Rejecting the emphasis on individuals and multitudes, Jodi Dean argues that we need to rethink the collective subject of politics. When crowds appear in spaces unauthorized by capital and the state—such as in the Occupy movement in New York, London and across the world—they create a gap of possibility. But too many on the Left remain stuck in this beautiful moment of promise—they argue for more of the same, further fragmenting issues and identities, rehearsing the last thirty years of left-wing defeat. In Crowds and Party , Dean argues that previous discussions of the party have missed its affective dimensions, the way it operates as a knot of unconscious processes and binds people together. Dean shows how we can see the party as an organization that can reinvigorate political practice. ** Review “In this enthralling and exhilarating book, Jodi Dean shows that, contrary to neo-anarchist cliche, the party form and class struggle are very far from being outmoded. The revival of the party has produced a surge of enthusiasm in contemporary left politics—an enthusiasm that Crowds and Party both explains and stokes up.” —Mark Fisher, author of *Capitalist Realism * “Jodi Dean’s new book isn’t just a timely reminder that to change our thoroughly and deliberately atomized society demands collective action and militant organization; it is also a passionate analysis of the fractured passion of shared political commitment, linking the enthusiasm of group experience with the sustained and steady discipline of popular empowerment.” —Peter Hallward, author of *Damming the Flood * “Written clearly, forcefully, and passionately, Dean gives us—the Left—not just a diagnosis of our defeat but, more importantly, a way out: the communist Party.” —Derek R. Ford, The Hampton Institute “Dean has a powerful point to make: political movements have to move beyond immediate expression—the crowd—and embrace long-term organization—the party.” —Matt Ray, *Open Letters Monthly * “Jodi Dean’s book rejects those who invest positively in the individual or the multiple per se and instead asks for a new and more subversive collective subject of politics. From real crowds like the Occupy Movement to the theoretical conceptions of crowds and mobs, Dean’s book interrogates the role of the crowd and the party in an attempt to provide a way forward politically.” —Alfie Bown, *Hong Kong Review of Books * Praise for Jodi Dean’s The Communist Horizon : “This is what everyone engaged in today’s struggles for emancipation needs: a unique combination of theoretical stringency and a realistic assessment of our predicament. To anyone who continues to dwell in illusions about liberal democracy, one should simply say: read Jodi Dean’s new book!” —Slavoj Žižek About the Author Jodi Dean teaches political and media theory in Geneva, New York. She has written or edited eleven books, including The Communist Horizon and Democracy and Other Neoliberal Fantasies .

Christian Zionism and English National Identity, 1600 1850 (Christianities in the Trans-Atlantic World) Andrew Crome Springer International Publishing Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, [Place of publication not identified], 2018
This book explores why English Christians, from the early modern period onwards, believed that their nation had a special mission to restore the Jews to Palestine. It examines English support for Jewish restoration from the Whitehall Conference in 1655 through to public debates on the Jerusalem Bishopric in 1841. Rather than claiming to replace Israel as God’s “elect nation”, England was “chosen” to have a special, but inferior, relationship with the Jews. Believing that God “blessed those who bless” the Jewish people, this national role allowed England to atone for ill-treatment of Jews, read the confusing pathways of providence, and guarantee the nation’s survival until Christ’s return. This book analyses this mode of national identity construction and its implications for understanding Christian views of Jews, the self, and “the other”. It offers a new understanding of national election, and of the relationship between apocalyptic prophecy and political action. ** Review “This book makes an important contribution to the study of Protestant “philosemitism” and the religious sources of English national identity. Crome begins with a hermeneutical revolution: the new “Judeo-centric” reading of the Bible that flourished in seventeenth-century Britain and put the restoration of the Jews at the centre of end-times speculation. Here he finds the origins of Christian Zionism, but also a new conception of the nation. England (or Britain) was conceived not as the new Israel (displacing old Israel), but rather as a nation that found its raison d’etre in supporting the Jews and their restoration to Palestine. Crome shows how this idea informed the debates around Jewish readmission in 1655, the “Jew Bill” of 1753, and the Jerusalem bishopric controversy of 1840-41. His study is essential reading for students of millenarianism, Judaism, and religious nationalism.” (John Coffey, Professor of Early Modern History, University of Leicester, UK) “Christian Zionism and English National Identity  is an important addition to the literature on Christian-Jewish relations, political theology, and the influence of the Bible on Western history. Moving fluently between primary sources and recent scholarship, Crome shows how concepts of chosenness and election were deployed to give a divine mission to English Protestants without claiming an eschatology reserved for the Jews. Working in a sensitive field, Crome is notably respectful of both historical actors and contemporary interlocutors. This book will interest and provoke readers in a range of disciplines.” (Samuel Goldman, Assistant Professor of Political Science at George Washington University, USA, and author of God’s Country: Christian Zionism in America ) “This excellent book makes an important, provocative, powerful contribution to the extensive work on English national identity, Christian (particularly Protestant) attitudes toward Jews, the idea of chosen nations, and prophecy and biblical interpretation from the early seventeenth century into the mid nineteenth-century.” (Achsah Guibbory, Ann Whitney Olin Professor of English, Barnard College, Columbia University, USA) From the Back Cover This book explores why English Christians, from the early modern period onwards, believed that their nation had a special mission to restore the Jews to Palestine. This book, at the intersections of political sociology, political philosophy, and theology, reads the legacy of Bosnia as both a paradigm and an antiparadigm for the human condition. The adjective Bosnian sums up an acceptance of the diversity of human attitudes toward the world and toward God. Yet the Bosnian tradition of accepting the inevitability of, and thus the right to, differing Christologies among people who speak the same language and share the same history has been reduced to the antiparadigms of confessionalism, ethnicism, and ultimately nationalism, which seeks either to expel or to subordinate to the majority everything that is other. **

Invictus : Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation Carlin & John Rough Guides, 2013
Soon to be a major motion picture from Academy Award(r)winning director Clint Eastwood, starring Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman. Eight Lectures on Experimental Music Alvin Lucier; ProQuest (Firm) Wesleyan University Press, Middletown, Connecticut, 2018
Brilliant lectures by the most influential experimental music composers of our time ** Review “The composer Alvin Lucier makes inventive and absorbing music from anything he touches, whether a traditional instrument or an everyday sound whose qualities are rendered brand new. This important book brings Lucier together in discussion with several remarkable colleagues, permitting the reader a fresh understanding of the varied and chimerical musical languages that surround us.” (Tim Page, professor of music and journalism, University of Southern California) “From the revelatory juxtapositions of Robert Ashley, to the roaring stream of consciousness that was Maryanne Amacher, to the crisp vignettes that Steve Reich seems to think in, these incisive lectures sound like the source streams of the musical world we’re now busy living in.” (Kyle Gann, author of Charles Ives’s Concord: Essays After a Sonata) About the Author ALVIN LUCIER is an American composer of experimental music. He is the author of Music 109: Notes on Experimental Music and co-author, with Douglas Simon, of Chambers: Scores and Interviews. Lucier was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music and received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Plymouth, England. He taught at Brandeis University and Wesleyan University, from which he retired in 2011.

The Kapetanios : Partisans and Civil War in Greece, 1943-1949 Dominique Eudes, John Howe (translator) New Left Books, 1972
The Greek Civil War was one of the bloodiest of modern times: it cost the lives of more than 600,000 people out of a population of 7 million. It was one of the founding moments of the Cold War and a pilot experience, in Europe itself, of the Western imperialist intervention practised in South-East Asia and elsewhere today. This book is the first blow-by-blow account of the process of the Greek Revolution and its background in the Resistance against Nazi occupation and fascist collaboration in the Second World War. The 'kapetanios' were the guerilla chiefs in the mountains in Greece who led the anti-fascist partisans, first against the Italian and German occupying forces and their Greek quislings, and then against the British troops who landed to prevent a partisan victory.Besides extensive use of Greek, British and German written sources, the author has interviewed many of the surviving Greek partisans and political leaders. He reconstructs the course of the Civil War and establishes the depth and significance of British intelligence activity and military intervention. He also recreates the internal conflicts which simmered and exploded within the ranks of EAM - the Greek National Liberation Front. This was a conflict between those who were for an all-out offensive against British occupation and its Greek supporters, and those orthodox Communists who obeyed Stalin's acceptance at Yalta of British dominance in Greece - and ordered the guerillas to lay down their arms in 1946. Eudes shows how, in the 'second' Civil War that followed, the Greek partisans suffered from this fateful initial surrender. However, it was only after years of bitter fighting and massive intervention by British and US forces that the Greek monarchist counter-revolution achieved ultimate victory in 1949. The consequences of that victory of the 'free world' can be seen in the fascist military regime of Papadopoulos today.

Populism and the Crisis of Democracy : Volume 3: Migration, Gender and Religion Gregor Fitzi; Juergen Mackert; Bryan S Turner Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Abingdon, Oxon, 2019
The contributions to this volume Immigration, Gender and Religion bring together empirically grounded and theoretically sophisticated case studies of populist responses to what are perceived to be the threats to national survival and sovereignty from ‘uncontrolled’ immigration. The demographic context – declining fertility rates and ageing populations – promotes the belief that high Muslim fertility rates are material evidence of an Islamic threat to the West, to national cohesion and particularly to the safety and dignity of the women of the host community. Consequently, gender plays an important part in populist ideology, but populist attitudes to gender are often contradictory. Populist movements are often marked by misogyny and by policies that are typically anti-feminist in rejecting gender equality. The traditional family with a dominant father and submissive mother is promoted as the basis of national values and the remedy against social decline. The obsession with women in the public domain points to a crisis of masculinity associated with unemployment, the impact of austerity packages on social status, and the growth of pink collar employment. Inevitably, religion is drawn into these political debates about the future of Western societies, because religion in general has seen the family and mothers as essential for the reproduction of religion. Christendom has been identified by populists as providing the ultimate defence of the borders of European civilisation against Islam, despite the fact that church leaders have often defended and welcomed outsiders in terms of Christian charity. Once more Christian Europe is the Abendland standing in defiance of a threatening and subversive Morgenland . This volume will be an invaluable reference for students and scholars in the field of political theory, political sociology and European Studies. ** Review "This ambitious third volume on Populism and the Crisis of Democracy examines populist movements through the distinct but cross-cutting perspectives of migration, gender and religion. Traversing East and West, the volume covers variants of populism arising in different national and political contexts, and documents their underlying tensions. Citizenship and belonging; cosmopolitanism versus communitarianism; gender equality versus gendered nationalism; Islamism, Islamophobia, and the Christian Right; subordinated masculinities – all are implicated in fuelling forms of populism that pose, as yet unanswered, questions for liberal democracy. A bold and important book, engaging difficult and disturbing argument." Lydia Morris, Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Essex "This volume provides a unique interdisciplinary approach to populism by combining scholarship on immigration, gender and religion as well as a comparative perspective across not only Europe but also the USA, Turkey, India, Russia and the Philippines. It is a very significant contribution to the religious dimension of populism, which remains understudied." ** * Jocelyne Cesari, Professor of Religion and Politics, University of Birmingham "This insightful volume develops a highly original and persuasive perspective on the phenomenon of populism worldwide. The authors explore the complex relationship between recent demographic trends, masculinity and religion. The theoretical groundwork is imaginative whilst the empirical material is remarkably rich and diverse. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know more about the rise of authoritarian and illiberal politics in different parts of the world – it is a truly fascinating read." ** * Patrick Baert, Professor of Social Theory, University of Cambridge "Populism is popping up everywhere as one of the most intriguing global phenomena of our times. This valuable collection of essays helps to illuminate its complex relations and synergy with global migrations, with the ongoing gender revolution and with the mobilisation of religious identities and counter-identities in the public sphere. An invaluable resource to understand our present global malaise." José Casanova, Professor, Department of Sociology and Theology, Georgetown University About the Author Gregor Fitzi is co-director of the Centre for Citizenship, Social Pluralism and Religious Diversity at University of Potsdam, Germany.
