Sous couvert de l'anonymat, un homme de quarante-trois ans décrit sa vie de travesti. Marié et père de famille, il n'est pas, prévient-il, homosexuel. Mais il éprouve une véritable passion pour le travestissement. C'est à l'âge de sept ou huit ans qu'il essaie pour la première fois l'une des culottes de sa mère et en ressent du plaisir. L'expérience se reproduit à treize ans avec celle de sa cousine ; il a cette fois une érection. Son intérêt pour les dessous féminins va croissant. Ses pulsions narcissiques et masochistes se développent. Quand il se retrouve seul, il enfile bas, gaine, culotte et manteau et s'admire dans un miroir. Il acquiert sa propre lingerie. D'abord amusée, son épouse se montre ensuite hostile à ses jeux, ce qui le pousse à avoir des aventures avec d'autres femmes. Parfois, l'auteur interpelle son lecteur, le prie de ne pas le juger. Ce qui ne saurait se produire : l'auteur décrit par le menu et avec une telle franchise les émois sexuels que lui procure sa passion du travestissement que le lecteur ne peut qu'en être troublé. La sincérité de la première personne du singulier fait de cette confession sans fard achevée en 1956 un témoignage exceptionnel, celui d'une mise à nu sur une sexualité non pas pathologique mais singulière et loin d'être rare.
