Advances in Archaeological Method and Theory : Volume 4 edited by Michael B. Schiffer New York ; London: Academic Press, Elsevier Ltd., New York, 1981
Advances in Archaeological Method and Theory, Volume 4 presents the progressive explorations in methods and theory in archeology. This book discusses the increasing application of surface collection in cultural resource management. Organized into eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of archeoastronomy and explains what kinds of testable hypotheses that archeoastronomy generates. This text then examines the general implications for the study of cultural complexity. Other chapters consider the use of surface artifacts by archeologists to locate sites, establish regional culture histories, and to know where to excavate within sites. This book discusses as well the interpretative interfaces between archeology on the one hand, and ethnohistory and ethnology on the other, that is based on a theoretical stance advocating a fundamental holistic approach to anthropology. The final chapter deals with understanding the ecology of ancient organisms. This book is a valuable resource for archeologists and anthropologists.

lgli/The Routledge Handbook of Archaeology and the Media in the 21st Century.pdf
The Routledge Handbook of Archaeology and the Media in the 21st Century Lorna-Jane Richardson; Andrew Reinhard; Nicole Smith Routledge, Chapman & Hall, Incorporated, The Routledge Handbook, 2024
The Routledge Handbook of Archaeology and the Media in the 21st Century presents diverse international perspectives on what it means to be an archaeologist and to conduct archaeological research in the age of digital and mobile media. This volume analyses the present-day use of new and old media by professional and academic archaeology for leisure, academic study and/or public engagement, and attempts to provide a broad survey of the use of media in a wider global archaeological context. It features work on traditional paper media, radio, podcasting, film, television, contemporary art, photography, video games, mobile technology, 3D image capture, digitization and social media. Themes explored include archaeology and traditional media, archaeology in a digital age, archaeology in a post-truth era and the future of archaeology. Such comprehensive coverage has not been seen before, and the focus on 21st-century concerns and media consumption practices provides an innovative and original approach. The Routledge Handbook of Archaeology and the Media in the 21st Century updates the interdisciplinary field of media studies in archaeology and will appeal to students and researchers in multiple fields including contemporary, public, digital, and media archaeology, and heritage studies and management. Television and film producers, writers and presenters of cultural heritage will also benefit from the many entanglements shared here between archaeology and the contemporary media landscape.

Global Social Archaeologies : Making a Difference in a World of Strangers Mizoguchi, Koji ;Smith, Claire Routledge, 1, 2019 jun 27
Global Social Archaeologies contributes to the active engagement of contemporary social archaeology through addressing issues such as postcolonialism, community heritage, and Indigenous rights. It addresses the major challenge of breaking down global divides, especially in relation to fundamental human rights, inequality, and inequities of wealth, power, and access to knowledge. This authoritative volume, authored by the current and past presidents of the World Archaeological Congress, introduces readers to the various theoretical and methodological tools available for the investigation of the past. Taking into account the implications for contemporary societies, it offers a new framework for social archaeologies in a globalised world. By combining new data from their research with an innovative synthesis and analysis of leading research by others, the authors have developed fresh conceptualisations and understandings of archaeology as a social practice, and of the ways in which it simultaneously straddles the past, present, and future.Exploring a range of case studies and enhanced by a wealth of illustrations, Global Social Archaeologies highlights a new approach to archaeology, one that places human rights at the core of archaeological theory and practice.

Archaeologies of Sexuality Robert A. Schmidt & Barbara L. Voss (Editors) Routledge, 2005 Edition, 2005
Status, age and gender have long been accepted aspects of archaeological enquiry, yet it is only recently that archaeologists have started seriously to consider the role of sex and sexuality in their studies. Archaeologies of Sexuality is a timely and pioneering work. It presents a strong, diverse body of scholarship which draws on locations as varied as medieval England, the ancient Maya kingdoms, New Kingdom Egypt, prehistoric Europe, and convict-era Australia, demonstrating the challenges and rewards of integrating the study of sex and sexuality within archaeology. This volume, with contributions by many leading archaeologists, will serve both as an essential introduction and a valuable reference tool for students and academics.Robert A. Schmidt and Barbara L. Voss are doctoral candidates at the University of California at Berkeley.

These Were People Once : The Online Trade in Human Remains and Why It Matters Damien Huffer; Shawn Graham Berghahn Books, Incorporated, Berghahn Books, New York, 2023
People buy and sell human remains online. Most of this trade these days is over social media. In a study of this ‘bone trade’, how it works, and why it matters, the authors review and use a variety of methods drawn from the digital humanities to analyze the sheer volume of social media posts in search of answers to questions regarding this online bone trade. The answers speak to how the 21st century understands and constructs ‘heritage’ more generally: each person their own expert, yet seeking community and validation, and like the major encyclopedic museums, built on a kind of digital neocolonialist othering of the dead.

Gender in Archaeology : Analyzing Power and Prestige by Sarah Milledge Nelson Walnut Creek, Calif.: AltaMira Press, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Inc., Walnut Creek, Calif, 1997
Sarah Milledge Nelson takes on the formidable task of attempting the first comprehensive feminist, theoretical synthesis of the flood of archaeological work on gender. She examines the roles of women and men in such areas as human origins, the sexual division of labor, kinship and other social formations, state development, and ideology. Nelson provides examples from gender-specific archaeological studies worldwide to examine such traditional myths as woman the gatherer, the goddess hypothesis, and the Amazon warriors, replacing them with a more nuanced, informed treatment of gender based on the latest research. She also examines the structure of the archaeological discipline in her attempt to understand and change a discipline that has made women all but invisible both as researchers and objects of research. Nelson's book is a benchmark work for all archaeologists working on or interested in gender and points the way toward fruitful avenues for further research.

International Handbook of Underwater Archaeology (The Springer Series in Underwater Archaeology) edited by Carol V. Ruppé and Janet F. Barstad Springer, Springer Nature, New York, NY, 2013
<p><P>Although underwater archaeology has assumed its rightful place as an important subdiscipline in the field, the published literature has not kept pace with the rapid increase in the number of both prehistoric and historic underwater sites. The editors have assembled an internationally distinguished roster of contributors to fill this gap. In addition to both geographical and topical approaches, the chapters also focus on technology, law, public and private institutional roles and goals, and the research and development of future technologies and public programs.</p> <h3>Booknews</h3> <p>Designed to cover a broad range of aspects of the field, this volume will similarly serve a wide audience of students, enthusiasts, and professionals. An international group of specialists contributed 31 chapters that consider different geographical sites of underwater archaeology (Rhode Island, Bermuda, South Africa, Israel, France, Italy, Ireland, and the Great Lakes are some) and 15 chapters on theory, technology, law, government agencies, and culture. Each chapter describes the place or issue, with consideration of the history of study, the development of laws, future projects, bibliography, and maps. Annotation c. Infrastructure in Archaeological Discourse: Framing Society in the Past (Persistent Questions of the Past) M. Grace Ellis (editor); Carly M. DeSanto (editor); Meghan C. L. Howey (editor) Routledge, Persistent Questions of the Past: The Hamilton College Winslow Lectureship Series in Archaeology, 1, 2024
This volume expands perspectives on infrastructure that are rooted in archaeological discourse and material evidence. The compiled chapters represent new and emerging ideas within archaeology about what infrastructure is, how it can materialize, and how it impacts and reflects human behavior, social organization, and identity in the past as well as the present. Three goals central to the work include: (1) expand the definition of infrastructure using archaeological frameworks and evidence from a wide range of social, historical, and geographic contexts; (2) explore how new archaeological perspectives on infrastructure can help answer anthropological questions pertaining to social organization, group collaboration, and community consensus and negotiation; and (3) examine the broader implications of an archaeological engagement with infrastructure and contributions to contemporary infrastructural studies. Chapters explore important aspects of infrastructure, including its relationality, scale, history, and relevance, and provide archaeological case studies that examine the social repercussions of infrastructure and the various ways it has materialized in the past. This compilation ultimately expands the discourse of infrastructure in archaeology and social sciences more broadly.Social scientists can turn to this volume for insights into an archaeologically informed perspective on infrastructure relevant to the study of past and current human behavior.

Pot luck : adventures in archaeology Florence Cline Lister University of New Mexico Press, 1st ed., Albuquerque, New Mexico, 1997
Husband and wife archaeologists Florence C. and Robert H. Lister and their two children traveled the archaeological world from 1940 to 1990. They produced numerous respected studies in the field of Southwestern archaeology and ceramics. Pot Luck, however, takes the Lister bibliography in a new a direction. Written in the years following Robert Lister's death in 1990, Pot Luck describes professional archaeology in personal terms, offering lively portraits of premier archaeologists and archaeological expeditions alongside vignettes of the Lister children at play and the Lister marriage at work. Pot Luck follows the Listers on expeditions in Mexico, the Middle East, Spain, and the Southwest. Lister offers a happy mix of expert knowledge, professional experience, personal reflection, and wonderful writing.

Approaches to Archaeological Ceramics Carla M. Sinopoli Springer US, Springer Nature, New York, NY, 2013
More than any other category of evidence, ceramics ofters archaeologists their most abundant and potentially enlightening source of information on the past. Being made primarily of day, a relatively inexpensive material that is available in every region, ceramics became essential in virtually every society in the world during the past ten thousand years. The straightfor ward technology of preparing, forming, and firing day into hard, durable shapes has meant that societies at various levels of complexity have come to rely on it for a wide variety of tasks. Ceramic vessels quickly became essential for many household and productive tasks. Food preparation, cooking, and storage-the very basis of settled village life-could not exist as we know them without the use of ceramic vessels. Often these vessels broke into pieces, but the virtually indestructible quality of the ceramic material itself meant that these pieces would be preserved for centuries, waiting to be recovered by modem archaeologists. The ability to create ceramic material with diverse physical properties, to form vessels into so many different shapes, and to decorate them in limitless manners, led to their use in far more than utilitarian contexts. Some vessels were especially made to be used in trade, manufacturing activities, or rituals, while ceramic material was also used to make other items such as figurines, models, and architectural ornaments. A Little History of Archaeology (Little Histories) Brian M Fagan Yale University Press, Little histories (Yale University Press), New Haven, 2018
"The thrilling history of archaeological adventure, with tales of danger, debate, audacious explorers, and astonishing discoveries around the globe. What is archaeology? The word may bring to mind images of golden pharaohs and lost civilizations, or Neanderthal skulls and Ice Age cave art. Archaeology is all of these, but also far more: the only science to encompass the entire span of human history--more than three million years! This Little History tells the riveting stories of some of the great archaeologists and their amazing discoveries around the globe: ancient Egyptian tombs, Mayan ruins, the first colonial settlements at Jamestown, mysterious Stonehenge, the incredibly preserved Pompeii, and many, many more. In forty brief, exciting chapters, the book recounts archaeology's development from its eighteenth-century origins to its twenty-first-century technological advances, including remote sensing capabilities and satellite imagery techniques that have revolutionized the field. Shining light on the most intriguing events in the history of the field, this absolutely up-to-date book illuminates archaeology's controversies, discoveries, heroes and scoundrels, global sites, and newest methods for curious readers of every age."--Provided by Amazon.com

nexusstc/Cultural Landscapes and Long-Term Human Ecology (Interdisciplinary Contributions to Archaeology)/3d72e15cb978d7abc425ceb83f9e8eaa.pdf
Cultural Landscapes and Long-Term Human Ecology (Interdisciplinary Contributions to Archaeology) Erick Robinson (editor), Susan K. Harris (editor), Brian F. Codding (editor) Springer International Publishing AG, Interdisciplinary Contributions to Archaeology, 1, 2024
Bringing together an international set of scholars, this volume presents integrative theoretical and methodological perspectives linking two complementary approaches in anthropological archaeology: cultural landscapes and human ecology. Authors grapple with issues ranging from the hunter-gatherer populations of North America and the emergence of the Neolithic in Europe to contemporary hunter-gatherer societies, using approaches from ethnoarchaeology to geomorphology, and methodological specialties from stable isotopes to social networks, in order to shed light on prehistoric human adaptations and how they produce cultural variation on a landscape scale. Together, contributions to this volume illustrate how interdisciplinary and integrative perspectives can aid archaeology by providing the means necessary to interpret and explain long-term records of human activity. This book capitalizes on the unique position of archaeology, and the long-term records of human ecology and cultural resilience the discipline develops, to make significant contributions to contemporary discussions of long-term climate human-environment interactions throughout the Holocene. The book is therefore produced during a perfect time in which other disciplines are focusing on the unique contribution that can be made by archaeology.

Re-Presenting the Past: Archaeology through Text and Image (Joukowsky Institute Publication) Sheila Bonde, Stephen D. Houston Casemate Publishers & Book Distributors, LLC, Casemate Publishers & Book Distributors, LLC, Oxford, UK, 2013
The archaeological past exists for us through intermediaries. Some are written works, descriptions, narratives and field notes, while others are visual: the drawings, paintings, photographs, powerpoints or computer visualizations that allow us to re-present past forms of human existence. This volume brings together nine papers, six of which were presented at a symposium hosted at Brown University. Two papers explore the classical past and medieval visualizations. Three treat the Maya, and one considers the imaging by eighteenth-century antiquarians of British history; yet another ranges broadly in its historical considerations. Several consider the trajectory over time of visualization and self-imaging. Others engage with issues of recording by looking, for example, at the ways in which nineteenth–century excavation photographs can aid in the reconstruction of an inscription or by evaluating the process of mapping a site with ArcGIS and computer animation software. All essays raise key questions about the function of re-presentations of the past in current archaeological practice.

Historical Archaeology : Why the Past Matters Barbara J. Little Routledge, London, 2016
What is historical archaeology and why is it important? Well-known archaeologist Barbara Little addresses these key questions for introductory students in this concise, inexpensive, and well-written text. Little covers the goals of historical archaeological work, the kinds of questions it asks, and the ethical and political concerns it raises. She shows what historical archaeology can provide that neither of its parent disciplines can offer alone. Little offers brief snapshots of key American sites: Jamestown, Mission San Luis, West Oakland, the African American Burial Ground, and the Garbage Project, among others. And she shows how historical archaeology is inextricably linked to public education, justice issues, and our collective understanding of the past. As an introductory guide for historical archaeology and similar courses, or as thought-provoking reading for professionals, this volume is unmatched in quality and scope.

zlib/History/Ancient History/Robert Temple/The Crystal Sun_43518898.pdf
The Crystal Sun - Rediscovering a Lost Technology of the Ancient World Robert Temple; introduction by Sir Arthur C. Clarke Century / Souvenir Press, First Edition, US, 2000
It is seldom that a book appears which provides an entire missing dimension to human history, but this is one such book. Based upon 33 years of research all over the world, in museums from Stockholm to Shanghai, from Athens to Cairo, and in thousands of books in several languages, Robert Temple has reconstructed a wholly forgotten story: the story of light technology in ancient civilisation. It goes back at least to 2600 BC in Old Kingdom Egypt, and continues throughout Western antiquity. Unknown to our modern archaeologists and historians, a science of optics and a sophisticated technology for the manufacture of lenses was widespread and fundamental in ancient times. It inspired awe in cultures who used it, so that it permeated their mythologies and religions, and led even to a ‘theology of light’ in mediaeval Christianity. Now at last we can know how it was that the earliest Egyptians surveyed their pyramids and other structures with such uncanny precision; they used the equivalent of theodolites with lenses, and were masters of optical surveying techniques. We can also understand how for thousands of years the ancients were able to produce miniature carvings on gems, including some so small they are invisible to the naked eye altogether. The burning mirror by which Archimedes destroyed a Roman fleet has been successfully reconstructed and proved to work. The Greek philosopher Democritus spoke of the moon having mountains and being a second earth because he had viewed it through a rudimentary telescope. A similar instrument was used for studying the moon by the ancient British, and Temple has located many lost crystal lenses in English museums.Myths are explained, and many religious motifs can now be understood for the first time, from the Eye of Cyclops and the Eye of Horus to the fire that Prometheus brought from heaven. This is one of the most revolutionary studies in the history of science and civilisation to be published for decades.

Scandalous Space : Between Architecture and Archaeology Alessandro Zambelli; Spurbuchverlag pth-mediaberatung GmbH, 2020
If architecture is a design-centred discipline which proceeds by suggesting propositional constructions then, Zambelli argues, archaeology also designs, but in the form of reconstructions. He proposes that whilst practitioners of architecture and archaeology generally purport to practice in future-facing and past-facing-modes respectively, elements of these disciplines also resemble one another. Zambelli speculates that whilst some of these resemblances have remained explicit and revealed, others have become occluded with time, but that all such resemblances share homological similarities of interconnected disciplinary origin making available in the scandalous space between them a logically underpinned, visually analogical form of practice. Alessandro Zambelli (PhD) is an architect, academic and researcher at the University of Portsmouth. He publishes and participates in the developing field of architectural / archaeological / anthropological interdisciplinarity, especially as it relates to design and drawing. As part of the collaborative Wastes and Strays project he also researches urban commons and commoning.

Advances in Archaeological Method and Theory : Volume 9 Michael B Schiffer; Gordon Bronitsky Academic Press, Incorporated, 1800
Advances in Archaeological Method and Theory, Volume 9 is a collection of papers that describes protohuman culture, pastoralism, artifact classification, and the use of materials science techniques to study the construction of pottery. Some papers discuss contingency tables, geophysical methods of archaeological site surveying, and predictive models for archaeological resource location. One paper reviews the methodological and theoretical advances in the archaeological studies of human origins, particularly covering the Plio-Pleistocene period. Another paper explains the historic and prehistoric development of pastoralism through archaeological investigation. One paper traces the three phases of artifact classification, each being a representation of a different attitude and approach. Another paper evaluates pottery artifacts using a number of basic materials-science concepts and analytic approaches, toward the study of their mechanical strength; and also reviews their use in archaeological studies of pottery production and organization. To investigate archaeological intrasites, the archaeologist can use different specialized methods such as seismic, electromagnetic, resistivity, magnetometry, and radar. Another paper describes various empiric correlative models for locational prediction developed in both contexts of cultural resource management and academic research. Sociologists, anthropologist, ethnographers, museum curators, professional or amateur archaeologists will find the collection immensely valuable.

Disgraceful Archaeology : Or Things You Shouldn't Know About the History of Mankind Bill Tidy; Paul G. Bahn The History Press Ltd, Bookwire GmbH, New York, 2012
The book that all archaeology buffs have secretly been yearning for! This unique blend of text, anecdote and cartoon reveals, and revels in, thse aspects of the past that have been ignored, glossed over or even suppressed - the bawdy, the scatological and the downright bizarre. Our ancestors were not always serious, downtrodden and fearful creatures. They were human like ourselves and shared our earthy sense of humour that is based on bodily functions, bawdiness and slapstick. So it's time to take the fig leaf off the past and have a long, hard look at the real past - the world that would have had the Victorians reaching for their smelling salts. So if you want to know what your average Egyptian slave thought of pharoah, or a Roman legionary thought of his commander, you will find the answer in Disgraceful Archaeology - in hilarious graphic detail!
