lgli/Max Stirner and the Political Theology of Fanaticism.epub
Max Stirner and the Political Theology of Fanaticism Jorn Janssen Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Cham, 2024
This book provides a rigorous and insightful exploration of political fanaticism, guided by a nuanced interpretation of the works of Max Stirner, a philosopher often overlooked in contemporary discourse. Based on a comprehensive analysis of Stirner's perspectives, the book sheds light on the phenomenon of political fanaticism and its implications for modern society. Defined as an intense and irrational emotional investment in political convictions, political fanaticism permeates both North American and European contexts, presenting a significant area of study within political theory. The aim of this work is not to advocate for any particular ideological position but rather to critically examine the phenomenon itself. Central to the investigation is Stirner's distinctive idea that political fanaticism mirrors the fervor of religious zealotry transposed onto the political stage. By delving into Stirner's philosophical insights, the book aims to elucidate the underlying mechanisms driving political fanaticism and its relationship to broader societal shifts. Contributing to the field of political theology by exploring the intersections between politics and religious belief systems, the aim is to achieve a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics at play in contemporary political discourse. Ultimately, the goal is to provide scholars and researchers with a comprehensive framework for analyzing and contextualizing political fanaticism within the broader landscape of modern politics. By engaging with Stirner's works and interrogating their relevance to contemporary challenges, the book seeks to enrich scholarly discourse and foster critical reflection on this pressing issue.

Wachende Vernunft : Philosophische Perspektiven politischer Ethik Walter Schweidler Springer VS, Colloquium Metaphysicum, 2024

Reconsidering Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness: Arendt, Derrida, and "Care for the World" (Reframing the Boundaries: Thinking the Political) Christopher Peys; Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Lanham, 2020
Reconsidering Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness presents a world-centric, ‘caring’ conceptualization of cosmopolitanism and forgiveness grounded in the thought of two radical, twentieth-century continental thinkers: Hannah Arendt and Jacques Derrida. It fundamentally re-evaluates what it means to care for the world in ‘dark times’ and develops a political theory of repairing, preserving and cultivating the relationships which constitute the human community. This interdisciplinary book reveals how cosmopolitanism and forgiveness each care for the powerful experience of human freedom: the power to begin new courses of political action with a plurality of people in the public realm. It not only casts new light on the political thought of both Arendt and Derrida but also contributes to ongoing debates about the nature of political spaces, the possibility for collective political action, and the importance of cultivating encounters with the unknown Other in today’s digitally interconnected world.

lgli/A Miscellany of Modern Musings.epub
A Miscellany of Modern Musings : Reflections From Modern Western Thinkers Peter Chong-Beng Gan Palgrave Macmillan, an imprint of Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2024
The book starts off by giving a quick overview of the main phases within the history of philosophy in the Western tradition. It then homes in on the "modern" phase and proceeds to select key thinkers that represent that slice from the rich intellectual heritage of the West. The main chapters have these thinkers' names as heading. The work is meant to be expository and discursive, suited to introduce the neophyte in philosophy to some of the big questions asked by philosophers and their methods of addressing these questions as well as their unique proposed answers. The coverage is selective rather than extensive; and hence, only a small portion of the philosopher's corpus of writings will be hand-picked and considered. Peter Chong-Beng Gan's interest in philosophy encompasses several fields, but his favourite is philosophy of religion. Apart from research and writing, teaching a philosophy class with enthusiastic students ever eager to engage their teacher and challenge him and their classmates with difficult and mind-blowing questions never fails to affirm him in why he's doing what he's doing

A Road to Nowhere : The Idea of Progress and Its Critics Slaboch, Matthew W.; University of Pennsylvania Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), Philadelphia, 2018
Since the Enlightenment, the idea of progress has spanned right- and left-wing politics, secular and spiritual philosophy, and most every school of art or culture. The belief that humans are capable of making lasting improvements—intellectual, scientific, material, moral, and cultural—continues to be a commonplace of our age. However, events of the preceding century, including but not limited to two world wars, conflicts in Korea and Vietnam, the spread of communism across Eastern Europe and parts of Asia, violent nationalism in the Balkans, and genocides in Cambodia and Rwanda, have called into question this faith in the continued advancement of humankind. In A Road to Nowhere, Matthew W. Slaboch argues that political theorists should entertain the possibility that long-term, continued progress may be more fiction than reality. He examines the work of German philosophers Arthur Schopenhauer and Oswald Spengler, Russian novelists Leo Tolstoy and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and American historians Henry Adams and Christopher Lasch—rare skeptics of the idea of progress who have much to engage political theory, a field dominated by historical optimists. Looking at the figures of Schopenhauer, Tolstoy, and Adams, Slaboch considers the ways in which they defined progress and their reasons for doubting that their cultures, or the world, were progressing. He compares Germany, Russia, and the United States to illustrate how these nineteenth-century critics of the idea of progress contributed to or helped forestall the emergence of forms of government that came to be associated with each country: fascism, communism, and democratic capitalism, respectively.Turning to Spengler, Solzhenitsyn, and Lasch, Slaboch explores the contemporary relevance of the critique of progress and the arguments for and against political engagement in the face of uncertain improvement, one-way inevitable decline, or unending cycles of advancement and decay. A Road to Nowhere concludes that these notable naysayers were not mere defeatists and presents their varied prescriptions for individual and social action.

Political Community in Minority Language Writing: Claiming Difference, Seeking Commonality (Palgrave Studies in Minority Languages and Communities) Patrick Carlin Palgrave Macmillan, Palgrave Studies in Minority Languages and Communities, 2024
This book offers case studies and a comparative analysis of three authors writing in different European minority languages, exploring how they link national and context-marked political community with universal human requirements. The author examines their left-wing positions and how their writing speaks to the acceptance of difference as a necessary condition of such universal values. He presents, for the first time in English, an in-depth treatment of the writing of the Basque poet, novelist and essayist Joseba Sarrionandia (1958–) and the Catalan priest and civil disobedience author and activist Lluís Maria Xirinacs (1932–2007), whilst linking their understanding of a 'foundational universalism' with the work of Irish novelist, short-story writer and language activist Máirtín Ó Cadhain (1906–1970). The book is by its nature interdisciplinary in order to engage in a thoroughgoing comparative analysis of European language minorities, and responds empirically and theoretically to calls made recently in this regard from within critical Iberian Studies. It will therefore be of interest to students and scholars of fields such as Iberian and Celtic studies, International Relations theory, literary criticism, nationalism studies, political philosophy, as well as socio-legal and critical terrorism studies. Eric Voegelin on China and Universal Humanity : A Study of Voegelin’s Hermeneutic Empirical Paradigm Muen Liu; Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Political Theory for Today, 2023
Eric Voegelin on China and Universal Humanity: A Study of Voegelin’s Hermeneutic Empirical Paradigm aims to speak to comparative political theorists, philosophers, historians, sinologists, and anyone interested in understanding our current disorders and exploring a culturally non-specific paradigm for understanding equivalent practices and patterns in the global age, especially China and the West. Specifically, this book looks at Eric Voegelin’s (1901–1985) Theory of Order. It focuses on Voegelin’s interpretation of order/disorder, his penetration of the Tianxia (the Chinese Ecumene), and his comparison of two representative heterogenous Ecumenes in the ancient West and East. In doing so, the book explores the issue of universal humankind and the nature of order-searching.

Philosophical Foundations of Communication Studies : A Praxeological Approach Pavel Slutskiy Springer Singapore, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2024
This book explores the philosophical foundations of communication studies, suggesting that communication phenomena extend beyond the scope of traditional scientific methods. It argues that communication, deeply intertwined with human behavior, cannot be fully comprehended through empirical methods alone. The book presents an epistemological alternative to empiricism in communication studies―an alternative rooted in the praxeological perspective. Drawing from the principles of rationalism, it proposes that conclusions about communication can be deduced from a priori theoretical truths, rather than empirical evidence. This book is a crucial resource for scholars in both philosophy and communication studies.

Transforming Politics with Merleau-Ponty: Thinking beyond the State (Reframing the Boundaries: Thinking the Political) Jérôme Melançon Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Incorporated, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Lanham, 2021
The contributors to this book offer productive new readings of Merleau-Ponty's political philosophy and of other facets of his thought. They each deploy his theories to adopt a critical stance on urgent political issues and contemporary situations within society. Each essay focuses on a different aspect of political transformation, be it at the personal, social, national, or international level. The book as a whole maps out possibilities for thinking phenomenologically about politics without a sole focus on the state, turning instead toward contemporary human experience and existence.

A Short History of Western Political Thought Spellman, W. M. Red Globe Press, 2011, 2024
This brief narrative survey of political thought over the past two millennia explores key ideas that have shaped Western political traditions. Beginning with the Ancient Greeks' classical emphasis on politics as an independent sphere of activity, the book goes on to consider the medieval and early modern Christian views of politics and its central role in providing spiritual leadership. Concluding with a discussion of present-day political thought, W. M. Spellman explores the return to the ancient understanding of political life as a more autonomous sphere, and one that doesn't relate to anything beyond the physical world. Setting the work of major and lesser-known political philosophers within its historical context, the book offers a balanced and considered overview of the topic, taking into account the religious values, inherited ideas and social settings of the writers. Assuming no prior knowledge and written in a highly accessible style, A Short History of Western Political Thought is ideal for those seeking to develop an understanding of this fascinating and important subject.

Introducing Political Philosophy : A Graphic Guide Dave Robinson Icon Books, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 1), Cambridge, U.K., 2006
Essential illustrated guide to key ideas of political thought. Philosophers have always asked fundamental and disturbing questions about politics. Plato and Aristotle debated the merits of democracy. The origins of society, the state and government authority were issues addressed by Hobbes, Rousseau, Hegel, Marx and many other philosophers. Introducing Political Philosophy explains the central concepts of this intriguing branch of philosophy and presents the major political theorists from Plato to Foucault. How did governments get started? Why should they be obeyed? Could we live without them? How much power should they have? Is freedom a right? Which is the best form of government? In the wake of consumerism and postmodernism, our need for a better grasp of political ideas is greater than ever. Dave Robinson's account of this complex subject is always clear, informative and accompanied by the entertainingly inventive illustrations of Judy Groves.

Citizens to Lords : A Social History of Western Political Thought From Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages Wood, Ellen Meiksins Random House Publisher Services, Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), London [England], 2011
In this groundbreaking work, Ellen Meiksins Wood lays out her innovative approach to the history of political theory and traces the development of the Western tradition from classical antiquity through the late Middle Ages. Her “social history” is a significant departure from other contextual interpretations. Treating canonical thinkers as passionately engaged human beings, Wood examines their ideas not simply in the context of political discourse but as creative responses to the social relations and conflicts of their time and place. From the Ancient Greek polis of Plato and Aristotle, through the Roman Republic of Cicero and the Empire of St. Paul and St. Augustine, to the medieval world of Averroes, Thomas Aquinas and William of Ockham, Citizens to Lords offers a rich, dynamic exploration of thinkers and ideas that have stamped their imprint upon history and the present day.

Technology, War and Fascism : Collected Papers of Herbert Marcuse, Volume 1 Herbert Marcuse; Douglas Kellner Taylor & Francis Group, 1, 20040114
Herbert Marcuse is one of the most influential thinkers of our time. Born in Berlin, Marcuse studied philosophy with Husserl and Heidegger at the Universities of Freiburg and Berlin. Marcuse's critical social theory ingeniously fuses phenomenology, Freudian thought and Marxist theory; and provides a solid ground for his reputation as the most crucial figure inspiring the social activism and New Left politics of the 1960s and 1970s. The largely unpublished work collected in this volume makes clear the continuing relevance of Marcuse's thought to contemporary issues. The texts published here, dealing with concerns during the period 1942-1951, exhibit penetrating critiques of technology and analyses of the ways that modern technology produces novel forms of society and culture with new modes of social control. The material collected in Technology, War and Facism provides exemplary attempts to link theory with practice, to develop ideas that can be used to grasp and transform existing social reality. Technology, War and Fascism is the first of six volumes of Herbert Marcuse's Collected Papers to be edited by Douglas Kellner. Each volume is a collection of previously un-published or uncollected essays, unfinished manuscripts and letters by one of the greatest thinkers of our time.

The Refusal of Politics (Incitements) Dubreuil, Laurent Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh, 2016
Dubreuil provocatively proposes an extremist rethinking of the limits of politics – toward a break from politics, the political and policies. He calls for a refusal of politics, suggesting a form of apolitics that would make our lives more liveable. The first chapter situates the refusal of politics in relation to different contemporary theoretical attempts to renew politics, and makes the case for a greater rupture. The second moment takes up what is liveable in life by way of apolitical experience, in contrast to appropriations of the collective, including a discussion of the arts. Finally, Laurent Dubreuil draws up an incomplete inventory of means, forms of existence – often frail and fleeting – that make an exit toward atopia.

The Vocabulary of a Modern European State : Essays and Reviews 1953-1988 Michael Oakeshott Imprint Academic, Michael Oakeshott Selected Writings, 1, 2011
The Vocabulary of a Modern European State is the companion volume to The Concept of a Philosophical Jurisprudence and completes the enterprise of gathering together Oakeshott's previously scattered essays and reviews. As with all the other volumes in the series it contains an entirely new editorial introduction explaining how the writings it contains find their place in his work as a whole. It covers the years 1952 to 1988, the period during which Oakeshott wrote his definitive work, On Human Conduct. The essay from which the volume takes its title was intended as a companion piece to the third part of the latter work, and is just one of over sixty pieces that it includes. The volume draws together critical responses to works by major philosophers, historians, and political theorists of his own generation such as Bertrand de Jouvenel, Herbert Marcuse, and Michael Polanyi as well as to some major figures of current scholarship such as Quentin Skinner and Roger Scruton.

Global Manifestos for the Twenty-First Century : Rethinking Culture, Common Struggles, and Future Change Nicol A. Barria-Asenjo, Brian Willems, Slavoj Zizek, Slavoj Žižek Routledge, Chapman & Hall, Incorporated, 1, US, 2023
This is a varied collection of thought-provoking essays, bringing together a number of viewpoints from around the globe and from internationally reknowned academics. The editors argue that we are living in a repetition that must be stopped – if our goal is that the signifier “humanity” remains in the following centuries, the time has come to work in the present. The objective is not to deliver precise or quick answers, but to gather varied voices from different continents, bringing together different languages, ideas, practices, theories, thoughts, and desires. In the words of Yanis Varoufakis, “urging us to become agents of a future that ends unnecessary mass suffering and inspires humanity to realise its potential for authentic freedom.” To leave the concept of a manifesto open, the contradictory aspects of the chapters are a subject of the manifesto itself. This is a manifesto of contradictions that reflects our reality as well as our struggles and our aspirations.

Öffentlichkeit : Die politische Form des Bewusstseins Gerhardt, Volker Verlag C.H. Beck oHG, Verlag C.H.
(Andreas Platthaus, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)

New Challenges for Political Philosophy || Gerard Elfstrom (auth.) Palgrave Macmillan, 10.1057/97, 1997
This book is a study of the impact of globalization on our political institutions and concepts. It begins with an analysis of the global economy, as this is the most powerful of the engines of globalization, then proceeds to examine the impact of the currents of globalization on national sovereignty, national identity, the structure of government, the role of government, and on the lives of individual human beings. It concludes by sketching several issues which globalization presents to political philosophy.

Loneliness as a Way of Life Thomas Dumm & Thomas L. Dumm Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, Cambridge, Mass, 2010
“What does it mean to be lonely?” Thomas Dumm asks. His inquiry, documented in this book, takes us beyond social circumstances and into the deeper forces that shape our very existence as modern individuals. The modern individual, Dumm suggests, is fundamentally a lonely self. Through reflections on philosophy, political theory, literature, and tragic drama, he proceeds to illuminate a hidden dimension of the human condition. His book shows how loneliness shapes the contemporary division between public and private, our inability to live with each other honestly and in comity, the estranged forms that our intimate relationships assume, and the weakness of our common bonds. A reading of the relationship between Cordelia and her father in Shakespeare’s King Lear points to the most basic dynamic of modern loneliness—how it is a response to the problem of the “missing mother.” Dumm goes on to explore the most important dimensions of lonely experience—Being, Having, Loving, and Grieving. As the book unfolds, he juxtaposes new interpretations of iconic cultural texts—Moby-Dick, Death of a Salesman, the film Paris, Texas, Emerson’s “Experience,” to name a few—with his own experiences of loneliness, as a son, as a father, and as a grieving husband and widower. Written with deceptive simplicity, Loneliness as a Way of Life is something rare—an intellectual study that is passionately personal. It challenges us, not to overcome our loneliness, but to learn how to re-inhabit it in a better way. To fail to do so, this book reveals, will only intensify the power that it holds over us.ISBN : 9780674047884

The Classical Marxist Critiques of Religion: Marx, Engels, Lenin, Kautsky || Delos B. Mckown (auth.) Springer London, Limited, 10.1007/97, 1975
In view of the enormous number of works on Marxism in general and in light of the many books and articles touching on the relationship of Marxism to religion in particular, it may fairly be asked why yet another such work should be produced. My reply is that in eliciting answers to the kinds of questions posed by the methodology I have used, it was necessary to go to the primary sources almost exclusively. This is not to bemoan a sad fate but to affirm that there are notable deficiencies in the secondary sources relevant to my topic. By way of general indictment, I contend that the major difficulty with existing studies of the Marxist critique of religion is that their authors, whether expositors or critics, have failed both to specify their own presuppositions concerning religion and to approach the subject with an adequate comprehension of its many dimensions. Since, in most cases, the reader is equally unprepared, anthropologically, sociologically, psychologically, and historically, for clear and informed thought in this vast and nebulous area, the result has been widespread confusion. As if this were not enough, numerous writers with little more than polemical interests have compounded the confusion by failing to distinguish between religion in general and their own brands of faith in particular. Others have not discriminated between the concepts of metaphysics and the supernatural items of religious belief.

Aristotelian Philosophy : Ethics and Politics From Aristotle to MacIntyre Knight, Kelvin. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Cambridge, UK, 2007
Aristotle is the most influential philosopher of practice, and Knight's new book explores the continuing importance of Aristotelian philosophy. First, it examines the theoretical bases of what Aristotle said about ethical, political and productive activity. It then traces ideas of practice through such figures as St Paul, Luther, Hegel, Heidegger and recent Aristotelian philosophers, and evaluates Alasdair MacIntyre's contribution. Knight argues that, whereas Aristotle's own thought legitimated oppression, MacIntyre's revision of Aristotelianism separates ethical excellence from social elitism and justifies resistance. With MacIntyre, Aristotelianism becomes revolutionary. MacIntyre's case for the Thomistic Aristotelian tradition originates in his attempt to elaborate a Marxist ethics informed by analytic philosophy. He analyses social practices in teleological terms, opposing them to capitalist institutions and arguing for the cooperative defence of our moral agency. In condensing these ideas, Knight advances a theoretical argument for the reformation of Aristotelianism and an ethical argument for social change.

The Truth of Others: The Discovery of Pluralism in Ten Tales (Philosophy and Politics - Critical Explorations, 25) Giancarlo Bosetti Springer International Publishing AG, Springer Nature, Cham, 2023
This book offers an account of ten crucial moments in the history of ideas, which represent ten key moments of the discovery of pluralism. From the Indian emperor Ashoka to Origen and from Nicola Cusano to Las Casas, Montaigne, Lessing, giants who opened the way to the thought of tolerance, challenging the dogma of a unique truth dictated by authority, followed in this reconstruction by other glowing thinkers of the twentieth century, such as Horace Kallen, Margaret Mead, and Jacques Dupuis. These protagonists, each in their own way, battled against monism for the respect of differences and for the knowledge of otherness. This kind of hall of fame of pluralist thinkers ends with the most important figure of the pluralism of values, Isaiah Berlin, of whom an unpublished interview appears here for the first time in English. The volume is unique in this two-thousand-year-old variety of voices gathered under the denominator of cultural pluralism that they embody in the deepest andmost challenging sense, often at the limits and beyond the limits of heresy. It is of great value and interest to scholars and students of theoretical, moral, political philosophy, sociology, comparative studies, comparative literature, religious diversity, religious studies, anthropology, and all those interested in the history of tolerance .

Social Fairness in a Post-Pandemic World : Interdisciplinary Perspectives Hikari Ishido (editor), Jiro Mizushima (editor), Masaya Kobayashi (editor), Xiaofang Zhang (editor) Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2023
This book brings a much-needed re-examination of the concepts of social fairness and justice in light of the COVID-19 crisis. Through careful analysis of issues as diverse as the allocation of vaccines through the global system COVAX, women and gender, migrants and refugees, the environment, and social justice, the authors bring novel perspectives on openness, freedom, and well-being. This ambitious collection combines political, economic, historical, philosophical, and cultural analyses to examine whether it is possible to envision a “fair society” after the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Pluralism and Law || Pauline Westerman (auth.), Arend Soeteman (eds.) Springer London, Limited, 10.1007/97, 2001
AREND SOETEMAN In the past we lived on one earth, but in many different worlds. Different civilisations, in regions far apart, knew about one another (at least from about the 16th century), they competed with one another or tried to dominate the other, they influenced one another, but in many important aspects they were independent from one another. Somewhere in the 20th century, however, this changed. There is no far apart anymore. We have lived through two European wars, which developed into world wars. Modem aeroplanes allow us to travel in only a couple of hours around the world. Instant communication between individuals who have the whole globe in between is a reality. There still exist great differences between different civilisations. But they can ignore one another only at their peril. They deeply influence one another. Today, therefore, we live in one world. Conflicts in the Middle East, in Rwanda and Uganda or in the former Yugoslavia have their impact all over the world. Violations of human rights, no matter where, are increasingly considered to be the concern of all of us. The whims and caprices of some dictator may influence the spending possibilities of the general public far away.

Revolution and Other Writings : A Political Reader Gustav Landauer & Gabriel Kuhn & Richard Day PM Press : Made available through hoopla, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Oakland, Calif, 2010
The first comprehensive collection of Gustav Landauer's writings in English, this valuable addition to the history of anarchism in the early 20th century gathers more than 40 influential works by one of Germany's most prominent radical agitators. The readings presented here cover Landauer's entire political biography, from his early anarchism of the 1890s and his philosophical reflections at the turn of the century to the subsequent establishment of the Socialist Bund and his tireless agitation against the coming Great War. Additional chapters on war and nationalism, the United States and Mexico, and opinion pieces and personal letters reveal the further scope of Landauer's thinking with pieces on corporate capital, education, language, and Judaism.

The Ends of Solidarity : Discourse Theory in Ethics and Politics Max Pensky State University of New York Press University Presses Marketing, State University of New York Press, Albany, 2008
Jürgen Habermas's discourse theory demands that human beings see themselves in relations of solidarity that cross national, racial, and religious divides. While his theory has won adherents across a spectrum of contemporary debates, the required vision of solidarity has remained largely unexplored. In The Ends of Solidarity, Max Pensky fills this void by examining Habermas's theory of solidarity, while also providing a comprehensive introduction to the German philosopher's work. Pensky explores the impact of Habermasian discourse theory on a range of contemporary debates in politics and ethics, including the prospect of a cosmopolitan democracy across national borders; the solidarity demanded by the integration process in the European Union; the demands that immigration dynamics make on inclusive democratic societies; the divisive or unifying effects of religion in Western democracies; and the current controversies in genetic technology.

nexusstc/Equality and Vulnerability in the Context of Italian Political Philosophy: Italian Efficacy/c0bbc3aabb69d8177e9c3c7b2fb59ca3.pdf
Equality and Vulnerability in the Context of Italian Political Philosophy: Italian Efficacy 26 Gianfrancesco Zanetti Springer International Publishing AG, Studies in the History of Law and Justice, 26, 1, 2023
One of the main goals of this book is to determine if, in the works of some of the key authors in the history of Italian political philosophy, a notion of “efficacy” can be found. In legal philosophy, “efficacy” is the capacity a norm has to effectively influence citizens’ behavior. The “principle of efficacy” is that according to which an order or rule exists as such when it is followed effectively in practice. Here by “efficacy” I mean the idea that normative phenomena are self-justifying, without reference to extrinsic systems of value (such as “natural law”). The examinations of several texts undertaken here constitute reflections on this theme, without any claim to systematicity. They have been grouped together, roughly in historical order, by their common respect for the contexts within which they reason and reach decisions, which lends them a characteristic flavor of harsh realism that at times relies on a minimalist use of traditional normative categories. The second theme that emerges through the respective chapters (each of which constitutes the text for a lesson in a course for Ph.D. students) is that of the relationship between “equality” and “vulnerability.” Here the idea is to elaborate a concept of “vulnerability” that is not underpinned by what we in Italy call an “anthropology,” that is, a fixed notion of human nature. Instead this concept should be comprehensible and graspable solely on the basis of the recognition of decisions and actions that are merely “efficacious,” that function “for what they are, and what they do.” This recognition doesn’t even need to be explicitly articulated by these authors with any specific, deliberately conscious awareness. The goal is not to identify a precise tradition of thought, one which elaborates a given line of reflection, but rather to highlight certain “themes” that emerge in the texts examined, even as the authors write with and for their own specific, contingent set of motives, which differ from time to time and place to place. These authors include some who are widely known, such as Dante, Machiavelli, and Beccaria. At times they are figures who typify certain key historical episodes, such as the Risorgimento (Giuseppe Mazzini) or Fascism (Cesare Lombroso and Santi Romano), while others reflect certain aspects of a contemporary debate (Pasolini and the “Braibanti affair”). The book is based on lectures given for a 2021 Ph.D. Course at the University of California, Berkeley’s Department of Italian Studies.

Social Citizenship Rights: A Critique of F. A. Hayek and Raymond Plant João Carlos Espada (auth.) Palgrave Macmillan UK : Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, 10.1057/97, 1996
This book criticises two rival views of social citizenship rights, as they are presented by two authors who are taken as representatives of broader currents of thought: Friedrich A. Hayek and neo-liberalism, and Raymond Plant and socialism. It is claimed that the alternative view presented here should still be regarded as liberal: it is part of an active view of liberalism, or a self-restrained constructivism, which should be distinguished both from neo-liberal evolutionism and socialist egalitarianism.

lgli/Roberto Esposito [AN 3067764].pdf
Roberto Esposito : new directions in biophilosophy Tilottama Rajan; Antonio Calcagno Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh University Press, [S.l.], 2021
This collection invites readers to reposition Esposito?s thought and explore the interdisciplinarity and unique methodology of his whole corpus. It addresses Esposito?s long-standing engagement with early modern philosophy, philosophy of biology, biopolitics, and the impolitical and the impersonal, together with his significant dialogues with contemporary philosophers like Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Simone Weil, Jean-Luc Nancy and Maurice Blanchot. A new essay by Esposito himself reveals the importance of philosophical sources and ideas that condition his thinking, especially outside and beyond the dominant biopolitical interpretative framework that has come to mark his reception in the English-speaking world

Distributive Justice and Inequality : A Selection of Papers Given at a Conference, Berlin, May 1986 Wulf Gaertner; Prasanta K. Pattanaik Springer Spektrum. in Springer-Verlag GmbH, Springer Nature, Berlin, Heidelberg, 2013
From May 20 to May 24, 1986 a conference on distributive justice and in equality was held at the Institute for Advanced Study Berlin (Wis senschaftskolleg zu Berlin). More than thirty scholars participated in this conference. The topics of the presentations ranged from ethics, welfare economics and social choice theory to characterizations of inequality meas ures and redistributive taxation schemes. This book contains a selection of the papers given at the conference. This collection of articles also appeared as issues 2 and 3 of volume 5 of Social Choice and Welfare. In the first paper P. Suppes argues for a pluralistic concept of equity. For too long the emphasis has been on income distribution but there are other characteristics which are important when one talks about equity. Suppes suggests that it would be desirable to have Lorenz curves for a variety of fea tures of societies, such as education, health and housing. P. Dasgupta studies the quality of lives in terms of an index of living stand ards. One has to distinguish between'same number choices'(the number of lives is given) and'different numbers choices'(problem of optimum popUlation). The author argues that in the latter case the anonymity (or sym metry) axiom cannot be readily defended. Once it is dropped, however, an incoherence in the moral ordering of possible worlds arises. The moral basis for different numbers choices becomes generation-dependent, an overall moral ordering of possible worlds no longer exists.

lgli/René Girard, philosophe politique, malgré lui Une théorie mimétique des sociétés politiques (Ouverture philosophique) [AN 1928675].pdf

lgli/The Tragic Mind - Robert D. Kaplan.pdf
The Tragic Mind : Fear, Fate, and the Burden of Power Robert D. Kaplan Yale University Press, 1, 2024
A moving meditation on recent geopolitical crises, viewed through the lens of ancient and modern tragedy“Spare, elegant and poignant... If there is a single contemporary book that should be pressed into the hands of those who decide issues of war and peace, this is it.”—John Gray, New Statesman Some books emerge from a lifetime of hard-won knowledge. Robert D. Kaplan has learned, from a career spent reporting on wars, revolutions, and international politics in Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia, that the essence of geopolitics is tragedy. In The Tragic Mind, he employs the works of ancient Greek dramatists, Shakespeare, German philosophers, and the modern classics to explore the central subjects of international politics: order, disorder, rebellion, ambition, loyalty to family and state, violence, and the mistakes of power. The great dilemmas of international politics, he argues, are not posed by good versus evil—a clear and easy choice—but by contests of good versus good, where the choices are often searing, incompatible, and fraught with consequences. A deeply learned and deeply felt meditation on the importance of lived experience in conducting international relations, this is a book for everyone who wants a profound understanding of the tragic politics of our time.

Hannah Arendt: The Last Interview: And Other Conversations (The Last Interview Series) Hans Christian Andersen [Andersen, Hans Christian] Bibebook, Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), New York, 2013

Citizens to Lords : A Social History of Western Political Thought From Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages Ellen Meiksins Wood Verso Books, Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), London [England], 2011
In this groundbreaking work, Ellen Meiksins Wood lays out her innovative approach to the history of political theory and traces the development of the Western tradition from classical antiquity through the late Middle Ages. Her "social history" is a significant departure from other contextual interpretations. Augustine, to the medieval world of Averroes, Thomas Aquinas and William of Ockham, __Citizens to Lords__ offers a rich, dynamic exploration of thinkers and ideas that have stamped their imprint upon history and the present day.

Lyotard and Politics: A Critical Introduction Stuart Sim; Edinburgh University Press, Thinking Politics, 1, 2020
It is Jean François Lyotard’s political focus that singles him out from his poststructuralist and postmodernist contemporaries. He is invariably 'thinking politics': finding ways of translating philosophical thought into a basis for political action. Stuart Sim explores how Lyotard’s brand of pragmatism can provide a focus for political theory and action in our cultural climate, especially in light of the dramatic resurgence of right-wing extremism.
