Explorations in Political Psychology (Duke studies in political psychology) Sears David O; Sullivan Denis C; Granberg Donald; Shanto Iyengar; Sidanius James; William J McGuire; Lodge Milton; Stroh Patrick; Tetlock Philip E; Wyer Robert S Duke University Press Books, Duke studies in political psychology, Durham, North Carolina, 1993
Mapping the territory where political science and psychology intersect, __Explorations in Political Psychology__ offers a broad overview of the the field of political psychology—from its historical evolution as an area of inquiry to the rich and eclectic array of theories, concepts, and methods that mark it as an emerging discipline.\ \ In introductory essays, editors Shanto Iyengar and William J. McGuire identify the points of exchange between the disciplines represented and discuss the issues that make up the subfields of political psychology. Bringing together leading scholars from social psychology and political science, the following sections discuss attitude research (the study of political attitudes and opinions); cognition and information-processing (the relationship between the structures of human information-processing and political and policy preferences); and decision making (how people make decisions about political preferences).\ \ As a comprehensive introduction to a growing field of interdisciplinary concern, __Explorations in Political Psychology__ will prove a useful guide for historians, social psychologists, and political scientists with an interest in individual political behavior.__Contributors__. Stephen Ansolabehere, Donald Granberg, Shanto Iyengar, Robert Jervis, Milton Lodge, Roger D. Masters, William J. McGuire, Victor C. Ottati, Samuel L. Popkin, William M. Runyan, David O. nexusstc/Why States Matter in Economic Development: The Socioeconomic Origins of Strong Institutions/c11ef4819c61c39f20f8f379c655495f.pdf
Why States Matter in Economic Development: The Socioeconomic Origins of Strong Institutions (Routledge Explorations in Development Studies) Jawied Nawabi Routledge, 1, PS, 2024
This book examines the underlying conditions that give rise to states that are effective, efficient, and bureaucratically inclusive with their developmental policies. In spite of humanity’s significant advancements in science, technology and institutionalization of universal human rights conventions in the last seven decades, many countries are still failing to achieve successful development results. As a result, enormous levels of inequality, poverty, and malnutrition prevail. This book focuses on the role of the state in the political economy of development, tracing the socio-economic origins of effective state institutions from a comparative historical-institutional perspective. Drawing on the case studies of South Korea, Brazil, India, Spain, France, and England, the study looks at how good state institutions form, and why these are central to the socioeconomic advancement of their populations. The book contends that effective developmental states are those in which state actors are able to effectively diminish and co-opt the power of the country’s landed elites during the early years of state building. Effectively, the power balance between these two classes determines the developmental trajectory of the state. Considering agrarian reform as the foremost indispensable policy tool to open conditions for positive changes in effective taxation, education, healthcare, and strategic sustainable industrial policies, this analysis offers a significant contribution to the literature on the sociology of institutions and the political economy of development. As well as being a key reading for advanced students and researchers in these areas, this book draws real-life policy lessons for practitioners and policy makers in the developing world.

Explorations in Bion's 'O': Everything We Know Nothing About (The Routledge Wilfred R. Bion Studies Book Series) Afsaneh K. Alisobhani (editor), Glenda J. Corstorphine (editor) Routledge, Routledge Wilfred R. Bion Studies Book Series, 1, 2019
Wilfred Bion described "O" as "the unknowable and the unreachable ultimate truth". In this fascinating collection, a range of authors offer their own theoretical, clinical and artistic approaches to exploring this enduring but mysterious idea. Drawn from contributions from the 8th International Bion Conference in 2014, the book examines how "O" can be experienced in all aspects of internal and external reality and within all relationships, from an individual relating to the mother to their emotional relationship with their self. It features insights into "O" drawn from the area of faith as well as its manifestations in clinical practice, while also included is a chapter exploring the links between Bion’s ideas and those of Winnicott, Lacan, Green and Freud. Featuring contributions from some of the world’s leading Bion scholars, this will be essential reading for any psychoanalyst interested in exploring the concept of "O", as well as scholars in philosophy and theology.

Sex, Sensibility and the Gendered Body (Explorations in Sociology.) Janet Holland, Lisa Adkins (eds.) Palgrave Macmillan UK, Explorations in Sociology, 1, 1996
The study of sexuality is moving from the margins to centre stage in sociology, as the 1994 British Sociological Association annual conference on 'Sexualities in Social Context' demonstrated. Drawn from that conference, the papers in this volume contribute to the lively and significant debates which have developed on the relationship between the sexual and the social, and between gender and sexuality. The focus here is on women, although always in relation to men, and to the dominance of normative heterosexuality and gendered power relations. From different theoretical perspectives, and employing a range of analytical techniques on a fascinating variety of empirical data, the authors explore the themes of gendered identity, the construction of sexuality, embodiment and control. The social contexts in which these themes are elaborated in this stimulating collection include the family, the law, the education system, medical practice and discourse, and cultural representations and texts.

nexusstc/Social Setting, Stigma, and Communicative Competence: Explorations of the Conversational Interactions of Retarded Adults/af6965e8f61b12950d73d021e506514a.pdf
Social Setting, Stigma, and Communicative Competence : Explorations of the Conversational Interactions of Retarded Adults Sharon Sabsay; Martha Platt; et al John Benjamins Publishing Company, Pragmatics and beyond : an interdisciplinary series of language studies, Serie 6, 6, Amsterdam, 1985
Mentally retarded individuals have been studied almost exclusively as clinical entities, not as persons immersed in the stream of social life. This has led not only to a lack of appreciation for the complexity of their lives and concerns, but also to an underestimation and incomplete understanding of their intellectual and linguistic skills. By exploring aspects of the ongoing linguistic and social lives of retarded individuals in various community contexts, this volume contributes to a growing body of literature which attempts to fill in this inadequate picture. In addition, the studies in this volume offer social scientists insights into the way that stigma such as that associated with intellectual and social incompetence affects social groups and influences conversational behavior and language use.

Reviving the Social Compact: Inclusive Citizenship in an Age of Extreme Politics (Volume 2) (Explorations in Contemporary Social-Political Philosophy, 2) Naomi Zack, Ruth Sample Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Incorporated, Explorations in contemporary social-political philosophy (ECSPP), 2, Lanham, 2018
Naomi Zack’s Reviving the Social Compact:Inclusive Citizenship in an Age of Extreme Politics addresses current political and social upheaval and distress with new concepts for the relationship between citizens and government. Politics has become turbo-charged as a form of agonistic contest where candidates and the public become more focused on winning than on governing or holding the government accountable for the benefit of the people. This failure of the government to fulfill its part of the social contract calls for a new social compact wherein citizens as a collective whole make long-term resolutions outside of government institutions. Analyzing present and evolving events, Zack reveals how race has exceeded intersection after formal rights have failed to correct ongoing discrimination; how class is no longer based on real life interests and has been manufactured and manipulated for political contest; how women have made spectacular progress but how the fame of elite women has left out poor, non-white women, transgender people, and sex workers; how natural disasters have not been (and perhaps cannot be) adequately prepared for or responded to by government; how environmental preservation becomes politicized; how homelessness could be fixed through capitalism; and how immigration reform has pivoted from inclusion to expulsion and why hospitality is an important civic virtue. Reviving the Social Compact is a call for good citizenship. Voting is the first step—because in a divided two-party system, a change from one party to the other is tantamount to revolution—and a new understanding of the social compact can lead to the stable civic life we need at this time. Naomi Zack is professor of philosophy at the University of Oregon and is author of Applicative Justice: A Pragmatic Empirical Approach to Racial Injustice, White Privilegeand Black Rights: The Injustice of U.S. Police Racial Profiling and Homicide, The Ethicsand Mores of Race: Equality after the History of Philosophy, and Ethics for Disaster.

nexusstc/Explorations in Dynamic Semiosis (Theory and History in the Human and Social Sciences)/bb04da1dc1a8b7c3bd79c2b368d1a043.pdf
Explorations in Dynamic Semiosis (Theory and History in the Human and Social Sciences) Elli Marie Tragel (editor) Springer International Publishing, 1st ed. 2023, 1st ed. 2024, US, 2024
This anthology is a manifold combining semiotics and psychology. Chapters in the book are authored by young scholars making sense of semiosis in irreversible time from a multitude of perspectives. The central focus on the dynamics of meaning-making comes together in a variety of topics that align in the core idea of dynamic nature of human making and use of signs. First, this book gives a comprehensive overview of relational dynamics of the sign. The overview is followed by a collection of chapters focusing on various topics relevant for humanities and social sciences, such as experience of time, (cultural) memory, musical signification, human-computer interactions, death and eternity, freedom and responsibility, authenticity, methods for practice and research in psychology, etc. This anthology contributes to the integration of the fields of semiotics and psychology, building on the classic traditions of the Tartu-Moscow School of Semiotics (established by Juri Lotman) and contemporary cultural psychology that has unified social sciences in the recent three decades. Examples of how new semiotic models are applied to various domains of human lives will be given, anticipating the future and addressing its past. As such, this book is a relevant read for everyone interested in the complex nature of meaning-making, and inclusion of dynamics in all expressions of life, including academic research.

nexusstc/Creativity and the Wandering Mind: Spontaneous and Controlled Cognition (Explorations in Creativity Research)/622aece80484bc7b17297964d0b4b170.pdf
Creativity and the Wandering Mind: Spontaneous and Controlled Cognition (Explorations in Creativity Research) David D. Preiss (editor), Diego Cosmelli (editor), James C. Kaufman (editor) Academic Press is an imprint of Elsevier, 1, 2020-07-03
__Creativity and the Wandering Mind: Spontaneous and Controlled Cognition__ summarizes research on the impact of mind wandering and cognitive control on creativity, including imagination, fantasy and play. Most coverage in this area has either focused on the negative consequences of mind wandering on focused problem solving or the positive effect of mindfulness, but not on the positive consequences of mind wandering. This volume bridges that gap. Research indicates that most people experience mind wandering during a large percentage of their waking time, and that it is a baseline default mode of brain function during the awake but resting state. This volume explores the different kinds of mind wandering and its positive impact on imagination, play, problem-solving, and creative production.

Economic Neoliberalism and International Development Tribe, Michael ;Tribe, Michael (editor) Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Routledge Explorations in Development Studies, 1, 2020 nov 22
"This book provides a robust theoretical and empirical exploration of the interrelationship between economic neoliberalism and international development. Putting the experiences of developing and transitional economies centre stage, the book investigates how their economic policies compare with the nature of economic liberalism during and after the significant economic reforms which took place from the mid-1980s. Beginning with two chapters which provide an introduction to the concept of economic neoliberalism, the second section focusses on its application to 'practice', and the book moves on to country/regional case studies, taken from Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America, China, and Eastern Europe. The book closes with some concluding remarks summarising some of the principal findings. Bringing together a wealth of expertise, this book clarifies controversial economic and political issues which have been significantly misunderstood in public discourse, and as such, it will be of interest to a range of researchers interested in the economic, social and political dynamics of developing and transitional countries"-- Provided by publisher

Explorations in Personality the late Henry A. Murray, Dan McAdams Oxford University Press, USA, 70th Anniversary Edition, PS, 2007
<p><P><b>Explorations in Personality</b>, published by Oxford University Press in 1938, set forth a provocative and comprehensive agenda for the scientific study of human personality. Blending no-nonsense empiricism with the humanistic desire to understand the whole person, the book is as relevant to students of personality psychology today as it was to its many readers 70 years ago. Assisted by such eminent colleagues as Erik Erikson and Robert White, Henry Murray set forth a full theory of human personality, illustrated a bevy of creative methods for personality assessment, and presented the results of a landmark study of fifty Harvard men. <b>Explorations in Personality</b> is one of the great classics in 20th century psychology. This reissue, enhanced by Dan McAdams' foreword, which provides a contemporary evaluation of Murray's achievement, will be of great interest to students and researchers in personality psychology and to many other behavioral scientists, scholars, and general readers who wish to understand the psychology of the whole person.</p>

lgli/The Transformative Self Personal Growth, Narrative Identity, and the Good Life (Explorations in Narrative Psychology) [AN 2932763].pdf
The Transformative Self: Personal Growth, Narrative Identity, and the Good Life (Explorations in Narrative Psychology) Jack J. Bauer Oxford University Press, Incorporated, Oxford University Press USA, [N.p.], 2021
The Transformative Self explores three of life's perennial questions: How do we make sense of our lives? What is a good life? How do we create one? In this comprehensive volume, developmental psychologist Jack J. Bauer responds to those three questions by integrating three main areas of study--narrative identity, the good life, and personal growth--to present an innovative model of humane flourishing and human development. The Transformative Self synthesizes an extensive range of scholarship, from scientific research in psychology to work in philosophy, literature, history, cultural studies, and more. The result is a cohesive framework for understanding how personal and cultural stories shape our development and how, through those stories, we might cultivate the growth of happiness, love, and wisdom for the self and others.

nexusstc/Social Defences Against Anxiety: Explorations in a Paradigm/6028af75339bdd4b2a9b4c1cf5e5fdfd.pdf
Social Defences Against Anxiety: Explorations in a Paradigm (Tavistock Clinic Series) David Armstrong, (Psychologist); Michael Rustin Karnac Books, The Tavistock Clinic Series, 1, 2014
This book revisits the theory of social systems as a defense against anxiety first set out by Elliott Jaques and Isabel Menzies Lyth in papers which they published in 1955 and 1960, and which have been influential points of reference ever since. Menzies Lyth’s study of the nursing system of a general hospital, with its roots in both psychoanalysis and socio-technical systems thinking, has remained one of the most convincing demonstrations of the influence of unconscious anxieties on social behavior, and of their effects in inducing dysfunctional defensive systems in organizations. The theory of "social defenses against anxiety" remains one of the most significant contributions of the Tavistock school to the study of human relations. Contributors explore this theory as a generative paradigm, capable both of theoretical extension and of empirical application to different institutional settings. They review changes which have taken place in the theoretical and social context since these ideas were first advanced, and assess what conceptual revisions these developments require. The relevance of Menzies Lyth’s ideas to contemporary settings of health and nursing is examined, as is the value of these ideas in explaining anxieties and their concomitant social defenses in the private sector and in various fields of public education and welfare. Finally, the book discusses some educational and therapeutic practices which have evolved at the Tavistock and elsewhere to ‘contain’ unconscious anxieties and to mitigate damaging forms of defense against them. Contributors to the book include writers distinguished for their contributions to the fields of organizational consultancy, to applied socio-psychoanalytic thought, and to research and professional practice in several fields.

The Transformative Self: Personal Growth, Narrative Identity, and the Good Life (Explorations in Narrative Psychology) Jack J. Bauer Oxford University Press, Incorporated, Oxford University Press USA, [N.p.], 2021
"This chapter introduces the main features of the transformative self-what it is and is not. For instance, the transformative self is not a person but rather a self-identity that a person uses to facilitate personal growth. The person creates a transformative self primarily in their evolving life story. This growth-oriented narrative identity helps the person to cultivate growth toward a good life for the self and others. The chapter provides an overview of the book's theoretical approach and topics. The book's first section examines the components of personal growth, narrative identity, and a good life that culturally characterize the transformative self. The second section explores he personality and social ecology of the person who has a transformative self. The third section shows how the transformative self itself develops over time. The final section explores the hazards and heights of having a transformative self"-- Provided by publisher

Psychology of Accident Victims in India : Explorations in Embodiment, Suffering and Healing Deepika Sharma Routledge India, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Oxford, 2022
"This book traces the psychological journey of accident survivors with locomotor disability, as they move from processes of suffering to healing. It provides a holistic understanding of disability by looking into the embodied understanding of the body as shaped by the socio-political and cultural discourses around impairment. The book addresses the lack of critical qualitative research on the health and well-being of those with disabilities by developing a nuanced understanding of the experiences of people with disabilities (PWDs). It showcases the challenges PWDs face and process of recovery and regaining agency through interviews and personal narratives. It also highlights the help and support they require and the steps we need to take to better understand and address the everyday needs of PWDs. . An important addition to the research on disability studies in the Global South, this book will be of interest to researchers and students of disability studies, critical health psychology, mental health of vulnerable populations and sociology as well as professionals working in the area of health and rehabilitation. People engaged in policymaking related to disability services, rehabilitation and rights will also find this book helpful"-- Provided by publisher

Facing the Challenge of Democracy: Explorations in the Analysis of Public Opinion and Political Participation Paul M. Sniderman & Benjamin Highton PrincetonUP, 2011
Citizens are political simpletons--that is only a modest exaggeration of a common characterization of voters. Certainly, there is no shortage of evidence of citizens' limited political knowledge, even about matters of the highest importance, along with inconsistencies in their thinking, some glaring by any standard. But this picture of citizens all too often approaches caricature. Paul Sniderman and Benjamin Highton bring together leading political scientists who offer new insights into the political thinking of the public, the causes of party polarization, the motivations for political participation, and the paradoxical relationship between turnout and democratic representation. These studies propel a foundational argument about democracy. Voters can only do as well as the alternatives on offer. These alternatives are constrained by third players, in particular activists, interest groups, and financial contributors. The result: voters often appear to be shortsighted, extreme, and inconsistent because the alternatives they must choose between are shortsighted, extreme, and inconsistent. Facing the Challenge of Democracy features contributions by John Aldrich, Stephen Ansolabehere, Edward Carmines, Jack Citrin, Susanna Dilliplane, Christopher Ellis, Michael Ensley, Melanie Freeze, Donald Green, Eitan Hersh, Simon Jackman, Gary Jacobson, Matthew Knee, Jonathan Krasno, Arthur Lupia, David Magleby, Eric McGhee, Diana Mutz, Candice Nelson, Benjamin Page, Kathryn Pearson, Eric Schickler, John Sides, James Stimson, Lynn Vavreck, Michael Wagner, Mark Westlye, and Tao Xie.

Virtue, Narrative, and Self: Explorations of Character in the Philosophy of Mind and Action (Routledge Studies in Ethics and Moral Theory) Joseph Ulatowski (editor), Liezl van Zyl (editor) Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 1, PT, 2020
__Virtue, Narrative, and Self__ connects two philosophical areas of study that have long been treated as distinct: virtue theory and narrative accounts of personal identity. Chapters address several important issues and neglected themes at the intersection of these research areas. Specific examples include the role of narrative in the identification, differentiation, and cultivation of virtue, the nature of practical reasoning and moral competence, and the influence of life’s narrative structure on our conceptions of what it means to live and act well. This volume demonstrates how recent work from the philosophy of mind and action concerning narrativity and our understanding of the self can shed new light on questions about the nature of virtue, practical wisdom, and human flourishing. This book will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working in virtue theory, moral philosophy, philosophy of mind and action, and moral education.

Progress in Self Psychology, V. 19 : Explorations in Self Psychology Mark J. Gehrie, editor Routledge, Progress in Self Psychology, Vol. 19, 1, 2003
The contributors to __Explorations in Self Psychology__, volume 19 of the Progress in Self Psychology series, wrestle with two interrelated questions at the nexus of contemporary discussions of technique: How "authentic" and relationally invested should the self psychologically informed analyst be, and what role should self-disclosure play in the treatment process? The responses to these questions embrace the full range of clinical possibilities. Dudley and Walker argue that empathically based interpretation precludes self-disclosure whereas Miller argues in favor of authentic self-expression and against the self psychologist's frustrating attempt to "decenter" from frustration or anger. Consideration of the utility of a consistently empathic stance continues with Weisel-Barth's clinical presentation and the discussions that it elicits about management of her patient's primary destructiveness. Lenoff's critical rereading of Kohut's "Examination of the Relationship Between Mode of Observation and Theory" and Rieveschl & Cowan's "Selfhood and the Dance of Empathy" deepen still further a contemporary perspective on the nature (and advisability) of a consistently empathic stance in the face of interactive and enactive treatment challenges. Other timely self-psychological explorations examine the twinship selfobject experience and homosexuality; self-psychological work with adolescents; and Neville Symington's theory of narcissism. Contributions to applied analysis explore topics as diverse as an exchange of dreams between John Adams and Benjamin Rush; Mann's __Death in Venice__; the films of Ingmar Bergman; psychotherapy of the elderly; and disabilities in the sensory-motor integration in children. And Volume 19 concludes with Constance Goldberg's candid and enlightening reminiscence of Heinz Kohut, "a very complex man with whom to be in a relationship."

Explorations in the Digital History of Ideas : New Methods and Computational Approaches Peter de Bolla Cambridge University Press, 1, 2023
What would the history of ideas look like if we were able to read the entire archive of printed material of a historical period? Would our 'great men (usually)' story of how ideas are formed and change over time begin to look very different? This book explores these questions through case studies on ideas such as 'liberty', 'republicanism' or 'government' using digital humanities approaches to large scale text data sets. It sets out the methodologies and tools created by the Cambridge Concept Lab as exemplifications of how new digital methods can open up the history of ideas to heretofore unseen avenues of enquiry and evidence. By applying text mining techniques to intellectual history or the history of concepts, this book explains how computational approaches to text mining can substantially increase the power of our understanding of ideas in history.

Explorations in Marx's theory of price -- Why Marx is still relevant for understanding the modern economy. Volume I, Money and money prices HOWARD, 1954- NICHOLAS Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature Limited, 1, 1, 2023
This book is the first volume in a three-volume series that takes an in-depth look at the relevance of Marx's economics for understanding the modern economy. The focus of this volume is the money prices of commodities. In light of the failure of central banks to stimulate inflation through printing of money, it is now accepted that there are problems with the mainstream approach to the explanation of prices. Howard Nicholas underlines the shortcomings of this and other approaches to the explanation of prices, particularly their concepts of the value of the commodity and money. He argues the problems with all other approaches are manifest in their inability to explain the changes in the relative prices of commodities, taking place in the context of changes in the aggregate money price level as well as independently. He contends that of paramount importance in Marx's explanation is that prices are set by producers prior to putting their commodities into the process of circulation, undermining the notion they are determined by the supply of and demand for the commodities in the process of exchange. Marx's approach to the explanation of prices is also contrasted with those of Neoclassicals, Post-Keynesians and Sraffa, with a view to highlighting the shortcomings in these approaches as bases for their understanding and explanations of money and prices. This book will be of interest to academics and students of price theory, money and finance, political economy, and the history of economic thought. Howard Nicholas retired in 2020 as associate professor in economics at the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University of Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He has published in the areas of inflation, development theory, financial markets, the global economy, and the macro dynamics of a number of countries. He is the author of Marx's Theory of Price and its Modern Rivals (Palgrave Macmillan).-- Provided by publisher

Contemporary Development Ethics from an African Perspective: Selected Readings (Philosophy and Politics - Critical Explorations, 27) Beatrice Okyere-Manu (editor), Stephen Nkansah Morgan (editor), Ovett Nwosimiri (editor) Springer International Publishing AG, Springer Nature, Cham, Switzerland, 2023
This book offers fresh academic insights, reflections, questions, issues, and approaches to development ethics, taking into account, African values and ethics. Development ethics is an area of applied ethics that examines the moral issues involved in global, social, and economic transformation. While it is a relatively new discipline, there have been numerous scholarly publications on it from Western perspectives. However, only a few studies that focused on development ethics from the African perspective. To address this gap, the book seeks to answer critical questions such as "What does development mean to Africans?", "How can we measure development?", "Who gets to decide?", and "What constitutes just development in Africa?" With contributions from African scholars from diverse backgrounds, the book covers various development themes such as Theories and approaches to development ethics in Africa, Environmental Ethics and African Development, Ethics, Politics and African Development, Migration and African development, Gender, Ethics and Socio-economic Development in Africa, Education, Ethics and African development. It is an essential resource for researchers, lecturers, and students interested in political philosophy and African culture studies.

nexusstc/Political Participation and Democratic Capability in Authoritarian States/f8ae0ea79a772ab42d4299120757ff7c.epub
Political Participation and Democratic Capability in Authoritarian States (Routledge Explorations in Development Studies) Lien Pham; Ance Kaleja Routledge, Taylor et Francis Group, Routledge explorations in development studies, London ; New York, 2021
This book provides an innovative theoretical and empirical exploration of the political participation and democratic capability of people living in authoritarian states. Merging perspectives from sociology and political science, the book demonstrates that despite autocratic restrictions on opposition, there is often still leeway for people to express themselves as political agents and to develop democratic capability. The first two chapters problematise political participation and develop an interdisciplinary three-domain framework that allows for critical engagement with and appreciation of the contexts and varied ways in which participatory activities occur. This framework is applied to analyse six country case studies: Singapore, Jordan, Belarus, Cuba, Nigeria, and Vietnam. Drawing on a range of data sources and different analytical entry points, the book investigates the substantive opportunities people have in exercising political agency and the implications for democratic capability. The book concludes by summarising the emergent themes and examining the potential of applying this method of inquiry in other political contexts. Encompassing both governmental and societal practices, the book offers insights into state-society relations and their role in constructing political values and goals for participation, which people negotiate and mediate to inform their choices, modes, and forms of civic engagement. These insights present a broad approach towards the study of participation, with relevance for understanding political participation in various societies under non-democratic and democratic rule alike. This book will be useful for researchers and students interested in political dynamics and intersections with economic, cultural, and social aspects of development. It will also be beneficial for practitioners interested in participatory actions and social change.

Explorations of Consciousness in Contemporary Fiction, (Consciousness, Literature and the Arts) Grzegorz Maziarczyk; Joanna Klara Teske Brill | Rodopi, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2017
Explorations of Consciousness in Contemporary Fiction is a collection of essays examining the potential of the contemporary English-language novel to represent and inquire into various aspects of the human mind. Grounded in contemporary literary theory as well as consciousness studies, the essays consider both narrative techniques by means of which writers attempt to render various states of consciousness (such as multimodality in digital fiction or experimental typography in post-traumatic narratives), and novelistic interpretations of issues currently being investigated by neurobiologists, cognitive scientists and philosophers of the mind (such as the adaptive value of consciousness or the process of self-integration by means of self-narration). The volume thus offers critical reflection upon the novel's cognitive accomplishment in this challenging area. Contributors are: Nathan D. Frank, Judit Friedrich, Justyna Galant, Marta Komsta, Péter Kristóf Makai, Ajitpaul Mangat, Grzegorz Maziarczyk, James McAdams, Daniel Panka, Barbara Puschmann-Nalenz, Joanna Klara Teske, Lloyd Issac Vayo, Dóra Vecsernyés, Sylwia Wilczewska

Free Trade and Social Welfare in Europe : Explorations in the Long 20th Century Lucia Coppolaro; Lorenzo Mechi Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Oxford, 2020
This book deals with the historical relationship between international trade liberalisation – one of the backbones of globalisation – and the development of social welfare. In Europe the issue has regularly been at the centre of the political debate for at least two centuries, and still nowadays it continues to inspire decisions of the highest order, as in the recent case of Brexit. Analysing a number of particularly meaningful episodes and moments, the eight chapters of this edited volume provide an overview of how the liberalisation/welfare nexus has been addressed in Europe since the end of the 19th century. Describing the oscillations from phases in which state, non-state and transnational actors saw the two elements as widely conflicting, to others in which more harmonious visions prevailed, the book uncovers the political complexity of the issue and contributes to clarifying its connections with the current economic situation, political balances and general social conditions.

Refusing the Limits of Contemporary Childhood: Beyond Innocence (Critical Childhood & Youth Studies: Theoretical Explorations and Practices in Clinical, Educational, Social, and Cultural Settings) Julie C. Garlen, Neil T. Ramjewan, Kisha McPherson Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, 2023
Each of the essays in this collection considers what lies beyond the limiting discourses of childhood innocence. Instead of focusing on how children "grow up," as has been the focus of developmental science for over a century, we ask what it might mean for discourses of childhood to finally "grow out" of childhood innocence? The authors featured in this volume explore this question through critical approaches that actively refuse the limits of normative and normalizing conceptions of the child by surfacing and centering complex, multiplicitous configurations of childhood. Together, these perspectives challenge existing discourses and social practices to reveal how power operates in and through the child and its uses.

Intersectionality and Group Analysis : Explorations of Power, Privilege, and Position in Group Therapy Suryia Nayak (editor), Alasdair Forrest (editor) Routledge, The New International Library of Group Analysis, 1, 2024
Drawing on clinical practice, this book explores how the Black feminist idea of intersectionality is vital to all group work practices, including group analysis. Intersectionality enables exploration of power, position, and privilege in group work; this volume is an argument for the ‘decolonizing’ of therapeutic group training, practice, and institutional traditions. The wide range of contributors discuss the impact of intersectionality on their work within group analysis, from clinical examples to theoretical reflections. Chapters span topics such as leadership, racism, working with survivors of sexual violence, and the experience of being a political refugee. Intersectionality and Group Analysis provides a space to develop clinically relevant theory for the future and includes an accessible introduction to the concepts of intersectionality. This essential text will be key reading for group analysts, other professionals working with and within groups, and readers looking to learn more about enhancing diversity within structures and organizations.

Rethinking Geographical Explorations in Extreme Environments: From the Arctic to the Mountaintops (Routledge Explorations in Environmental Studies) Marco Armiero, Roberta Biasillo, Stefano Morosini Routledge/Earthscan, Routledge explorations in environmental studies, S.l, 2022
"Focusing on extreme environments, from Umberto Nobile's expedition to the Arctic to the commercialization of Mt Everest, this volume examines global environmental margins, how they are conceived and how perceptions have changed. Mountaintops and Arctic environments are the settings of social encounters, political strategies, individual enterprises, geopolitical tensions, decolonial practises, and scientific experiments. Concentrating on mountaineering and Arctic exploration between 1880 - 1960, contributors to this volume show how environmental marginalisation has been discursively implemented and materially generated by foreign and local actors. It examines to what extent the status and identity of extreme environments has changed during modern times, moving them from periphery to the centre and discarding their marginality. The first section looks at ways in which societies have framed remoteness, through the lens of commercialization, colonialism, knowledge production and sport, while the second examines the reverse transfer, focusing on how extreme nature has influenced societies, through international network creation, political consensus and identity building. This collection enriches the historical understanding of exploration by adopting a critical approach and offering multidimensional and multi-gaze reconstructions. This book is essential reading for students and scholars interested in environmental history, geography, colonial studies and the environmental humanities"-- Provided by publisher

On Being One's Self : Clinical Explorations in Identity From John Steiner's Workshop Sharon Numa Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, The new library of psychoanalysis, 1st, New York, NY, 2022
"On Being One's Self emerges from discussions in John Steiner's Workshop, and investigates the meanings of self and identity, including the many ways in which the development of personal identity can be subverted, interrogating what can facilitate the development of a reasonably stable identity. The variety of problems that can arise in relation to the development of a unique identity are reflected in rich clinical material that vividly illustrates 'identities' felt to be weak, unformed, fluid or brittle, in many cases demonstrating how the sense of self is held together by pathological defences and organisations. The book examines several long-term adult analytic cases suggesting that a mature personal identity involves not only 'knowing who one is' but also the capacity for empathic identification with the experience of others as separate human beings. The question of 'having' an identity, or the fear of losing it, is a central concern of individuals, and this volume, which will be of interest to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists alike, considers these issues by looking at the deepest conflicts around self and identity as they emerge and are relived in the transference relationship"-- Provided by publisher

The Analyst's Reveries : Explorations in Bion's Enigmatic Concept Fred Busch Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Hardcover, 2019
While the use of the analyst's own reveries in work with patients has increased in recent times, there has been little critical inquiry into its value, and the problems it may lead to. The Analyst's Reveries finds increasing veneration for the analyst's use of their reveries, while revealing important differences amongst post-Bionians in how reverie is defined and used clinically. Fred Busch ponders if it has been fully recognized that some post-Bionions suggest a new, radical paradigm for what is curative in psychoanalysis. After searching for the roots of the analyst's use of reverie in Bion's work and questioning whether in this regard Bion was a Bionian, Busch carefully examines the work of some post-Bionians and finds both convincing ways to think about the usefulness and limitations of the analyst's use of reverie. He explores questions including: From what part of the mind does a reverie emerge? How does its provenance inform its transformative possibilities? Do we over-generalize in conceptualizing what is unrepresented, with the corresponding problem of false positives? Do dreams equal understanding and what about the generalizability of the co-created reverie? Busch concludes that it is primarily through the analyst's own associations that the reverie's potential is revealed, which further helps the analyst distinguish it from many other possibilities, including the analyst's countertransference. He believes in the importance of converting reveries into verbal interpretations, a controversial point amongst post-Bionians. Busch ends with the difficult task of classifying the analyst's reveries based on their degree of representation. The Analyst's Reveries will be of great interest to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists.

Media Power and Hegemony in South Africa : The Myth of Independence Blessed Ngwenya Routledge Ltd, Routledge explorations in development studies, London ; New York, 2021
This book critically explores how meanings of ‘independence’ are constructed and reconfigured by public service broadcasters in the global south, with a particular focus on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Blessed Ngwenya questions the institutional, political economy and world systems paradigms born out of coloniality which continue to influence broadcasting and media in the global south and instead presents a radical local understanding of freedom in the present day. The author draws on detailed empirical interviews with members of staff from across the SABC, including board members, senior management, and journalists, offering an intimate insight into how the participants themselves perceive, understand, and deal with the issues and problems they face in relation to independence. Framed by a rich analysis of the historical context, this book provides readers with the theoretical and empirical toolkit needed to place the everyday experiences and needs of their subjects first and to ultimately arrive at an accurate understanding of independence in its several senses. Contributing to growing global debates on the decolonisation of knowledge, this book is critical reading for advanced scholars and researchers of African media, culture, communication, and epistemic freedom. Precarities of 21st Century Childhoods: Critical Explorations of Time(s), Place(s), and Identities (Critical Childhood & Youth Studies: Theoretical ... Educational, Social, and Cultural Settings) Michael O'Loughlin; Carol Owens; Louis Rothschild Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Lanham, 2023
This book locates internally focused, critical perspectives regarding the social, political, emotional, and mental growth of children. Through the radical openness afforded by psychoanalytic and related frameworks, this volume illuminates, promotes, and helps situate subjectivities that are often blotted out for both the child and society. The overall emphasis is on motifs of lostness and foundness, in terms of the geographies of the psycho-social, and how such motifs govern and regulate what have come to count as the normative indexes of childhood as well as how they exclude other real childhoods.

Rawlsian Explorations in Religion and Applied Philosophy Daniel A. Dombrowski Pennsylvania State University Press, 1, 2011-06-01
To probe the underlying premises of a liberal political order, John Rawls felt obliged to use a philosophical method that abstracted from many of the details of ordinary life. But this very abstraction became a point of criticism, as it left unclear the implications of his theory for public policies and life in the real political world. __Rawlsian Explorations in Religion and Applied Philosophy__ attempts to ferret out those implications, filling the gap between Rawls’s own empyrean heights and the really practical public policy proposals made by government planners, lobbyists, and legislators. Among the topics examined are natural rights, the morality of war, the treatment of mentally deficient humans and nonhuman sentient creatures, the controversies over legacy and affirmative action in college admissions, and the place of religious belief in a democratic society. The final chapter explores how Rawls’s own religious beliefs, as revealed in two works posthumously published in 2009, played into his formulation of his theory of justice.

European Civil Society and International Development Aid: Organisational Incentives and NGO Advocacy (Routledge Explorations in Development Studies) Balázs Szent-Iványi Routledge, Chapman & Hall, Incorporated, Routledge explorations in development studies, S.l, 2022
This book explains how and why European non-governmental development organisations (NGDOs) engage in advocacy towards the European Union (EU). It analyses the heterogenous structure of the sector, with examples ranging from large multinational networks to essentially single person NGDOs. The book provides a detailed map of the topics which have featured in NGDO advocacy since 2006, arguing that NGDOs have generally been reactive in their advocacy towards the EU. The author explains how they have contested a number of policy issues on the agendas of the EU institutions, especially around the diversion of aid to manage migration and leverage private sector investments. Furthermore, some NGDOs have used the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to re-package their pre-existing policy demands. Based on an analytical framework focused around three variables, namely moral vision, funding concerns, and the need to build/maintain a ‘good’ reputation, the book explains these advocacy choices, and argues that much of NGDO advocacy seems to be consistent with funding motivations. The author highlights the importance of moral vision and reputational concerns in moderating how far NGDOs will go with funding-driven advocacy, arguing that motivations need to be looked at in their complexity, and within the specific policy context. Drawing on a range of quantitative and qualitative data sets to provide a rich and varied picture of the advocacy work of European development NGOs, __European Civil Society and International Development Aid__ is a key reference for researchers and practitioners working in the field.

The Unobtrusive Relational Analyst: Explorations in Psychoanalytic Companioning (Relational Perspectives Book Series) Robert Grossmark Routledge, Relational Perspectives Book Series, 1, 2018
Psychoanalysts increasingly find themselves working with patients and states that are not amenable to verbal and dialogic engagement. Such patients are challenging for a psychoanalytic approach that assumes that the patient relates in the verbal realm and is capable of reflective function. Both the classical stance of neutrality and abstinence and a contemporary relational approach that works with mutuality and intersubjectivity, can often ask too much of patients. __The Unobtrusive Relational Analyst__ introduces a new psychoanalytic register for working with such patients and states, involving a present and engaged analyst who is unobtrusive to the unfolding of the patient’s inner world and the flow of mutual enactments. For the unobtrusive relational analyst, the world and idiom of the patient becomes the defining signature of the clinical interaction and process. Rather than seeking to bring patients into greater dialogic relatedness, the analyst companions the patient in the flow of enactive engagement and into the damaged and constrained landscapes of their inner worlds. Being known and companioned in these areas of deep pain, shame and fragmentation is the foundation on which psychoanalytic transformation and healing rests. In a series of illuminating chapters that include vivid examples drawn from his work with individuals and with groups, Robert Grossmark illustrates the work of the unobtrusive relational analyst. He reconfigures the role of action and enactment in psychoanalysis and group-analysis, and expands the understanding of the analyst’s subjectivity to embrace receptivity, surrender and companioning. Offering fresh concepts regarding therapeutic action and psychoanalytic engagement, __The Unobtrusive Relational Analyst__ will be of great interest to all psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists.

Economic Neoliberalism and International Development Michael A. Tribe Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Routledge explorations in develoment studies, London New York NY, 2021
This book provides a robust theoretical and empirical exploration of the interrelationship between economic neoliberalism and international development. Putting the experiences of developing and transitional economies centre stage, the book investigates how their economic policies compare with the nature of economic liberalism during and after the significant economic reforms which took place from the mid-1980s. Beginning with two chapters which provide an introduction to the concept of economic neoliberalism, the second section focuses on its application to 'practice', and the book moves on to country/regional case studies, taken from Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America, China, and Eastern Europe. The book closes with some concluding remarks summarising some of the principal findings. Bringing together a wealth of expertise, this book clarifies controversial economic and political issues which have been significantly misunderstood in public discourse, and as such, it will be of interest to a range of researchers interested in the economic, social and political dynamics of developing and transitional countries.ISBN : 9780367228286
