For many researchers, the inclusion of trade related intellectual property (TRIPS) into the Uruguay round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and trade (GATT) negotiations marks an important demonstration of the political influence of U.S. knowledge-intensive industries. However, as he demonstrates, a more thorough specification of the domestic political environment reveals that the research pharmaceutical industry was incapable of achieving its domestic policy objectives at the same time that it is credited with immense international political power.By providing a theory of institutional choice, Harrison reconciles this incongruity. He explains the strategic choices of the research pharmaceutical industry as a function of the transaction costs associated with pursuing its policy objectives within a variety of institutional alternatives. He concludes that he internationalization of intellectual property rights was a result of the changing domestic political environment in which the research pharmaceutical industry found itself the loser in a series of domestic economic policy battles. The book claims that liquidity issues are at the heart of recent financial crises, and their analysis helps to explain phenomena that are alien to mainstream macroeconomic models. To make this point, the book first reviews crisis episodes starting with Mexico's Tequila crisis in 1994/5 and including the Great Recession in developed-market economies. The narrative reveals wide gaps in conventional models and the existence of stubborn intellectual inertia in dealing with these crises. The book devotes an entire chapter to discussing liquidity, highlighting that resilience with respect to Liquidity Crunch differs across liquid assets. This observation helps to rationalize a large set of phenomena, including resilience of the US dollar vis à vis other dollar-denominated liquid assets; global contagion in financial markets; effectiveness and limitations of central bank monetary policy; and negative effects of low and persistent international interest rates. Some of these phenomena – and others like secular stagnation – become evident once liquidity is explicitly introduced in mainstream models. In two econometric studies the book (1) focuses on Liquidity Crunch as an important component of “non-regular” recessions; and (2) identifies factors likely to contribute to Sudden Stop vulnerability in emerging-market economies.

An examination of Liquidity Crunch in triggering and characterizing financial crises. Since the subprime mortgage crisis that began in 2007, advanced economies have felt a nagging sense of insecurity. In parallel, the profession has witnessed phenomena that are alien to mainstream macroeconomic models. Financial crises are systemic, occurring simultaneously in different economies. In this book, Guillermo Calvo focuses on liquidity factors as a commonality in financial crises. Specifically, he examines the role of "liquidity crunch" in triggering crises. He also identifies a fundamental (but overlooked) idea in Keynes's General Theory , termed by Calvo the price theory of money, to rationalize the resiliency of the U.S. dollar when other dollar-backed assets suffered a devastating liquidity crunch. Calvo shows that a sharp focus on liquidity reveals some characteristics of liquid assets that are easy to miss otherwise. He argues for liquidity's centrality, presenting what he calls the Liquidity Approach. He shows that simple extensions of standard monetary models help rationalize the implications of the liquidity crunch, and then examines slightly more technical models that highlight liquidity issues. He explores the empirical effects of liquidity crunch by studying systemic sudden stops (of capital inflows), presuming that they are triggered by liquidity crunch-type phenomena.

An examination of Liquidity Crunch in triggering and characterizing financial crises. Since the subprime mortgage crisis that began in 2007, advanced economies have felt a nagging sense of insecurity. In parallel, the profession has witnessed phenomena that are alien to mainstream macroeconomic models. Financial crises are systemic, occurring simultaneously in different economies. In this book, Guillermo Calvo focuses on liquidity factors as a commonality in financial crises. Specifically, he examines the role of "liquidity crunch" in triggering crises. He also identifies a fundamental (but overlooked) idea in Keynes's General Theory , termed by Calvo the price theory of money, to rationalize the resiliency of the U.S. dollar when other dollar-backed assets suffered a devastating liquidity crunch. Calvo shows that a sharp focus on liquidity reveals some characteristics of liquid assets that are easy to miss otherwise. He argues for liquidity's centrality, presenting what he calls the Liquidity Approach. He shows that simple extensions of standard monetary models help rationalize the implications of the liquidity crunch, and then examines slightly more technical models that highlight liquidity issues. He explores the empirical effects of liquidity crunch by studying systemic sudden stops (of capital inflows), presuming that they are triggered by liquidity crunch-type phenomena.

During the nineteenth century, literate Russians and educated American blacks encountered a dominant Western narrative of world civilization that seemed to ignore the histories of Slavs and African Americans. In response, generations of Russian and black American intellectuals have asserted eloquent counterclaims for the cultural significance of a collective national 'soul' veiled from prejudiced Western eyes. Up from Bondage is the first study to parallel the evolution of Russian and African American cultural nationalism in literary works and philosophical writings. Illuminating a remarkably widespread cross-pollination between the two cultural and intellectual traditions, Dale E. Peterson frames much of his argument around W. E. B. DuBoisâs concept of 'double-consciousness,' wherein members of an oppressed section of society view themselves simultaneously through their own self-awareness and through the internalized standards of the dominant culture.
