Ces questions font depuis longtemps difficulté aux croyants, mais elles connaissent aujourd'hui un regain d'actualité avec le succès des créationnistes, ces " fondamentalistes " qui récusent le travail des paléontologues comme celui des astrophysiciens et préfèrent s'en tenir littéralement au récit de la création du monde et de l'homme dans la Bible. Par ailleurs, les découvertes de la génétique et des sciences cognitives ne sont pas en reste pour troubler les croyants. Ces difficultés sont ici abordées de front. Mais encore faut-il savoir de quoi on parle. Chaque découverte, théorie, problème scientifique fait l'objet d'une présentation claire, honnête, lucide, pertinente. Les aspects historiques ne sont pas absents. L'auteur est sévère pour l'attitude de l'Eglise et des croyants dans le passé, et encore aujourd'hui. Mais sa volonté d'ouverture ne fait pas taire ses désaccords avec des interlocuteurs scientifiques, en particulier quand ils franchissent sans réflexion les limites de leur domaine. En fin de compte, c'est tout le conflit, jamais vraiment dépassé, entre foi et science, qui est revisité dans ce livre intelligent et pédagogique.
