The Rule of Law in the Real World
Paul Gowder
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), 1st published, New York, 2016
In The Rule Of Law In The Real World, Paul Gowder Defends A New Conception Of The Rule Of Law As The Coordinated Control Of Power And Demonstrates That The Rule Of Law, Thus Understood, Creates And Preserves Social Equality In A State. In A Highly Engaging, Interdisciplinary Text That Moves Seamlessly From Theory To Reality, Using Examples Ranging From Ancient Greece Through The Present, Gowder Sheds Light On How Societies Have Achieved The Rule Of Law, How They Have Sustained It In The Face Of Political Upheaval, And How It May Be Measured And Developed In The Future. The Rule Of Law In The Real World Is An Essential Work For Scholars, Students, Policymakers, And Anyone Else Who Believes The Rule Of Law Is Critical To The Proper Functioning Of Society-- The Rule Of Law : A Basic Account -- The Strong Version Of The Rule Of Law -- Generality And Hierarchy -- Egalitarian Liberty And Reciprocity In Strategic Context -- Isonomia : The Dawn Of Legal Equality -- The Logic Of Coordination -- Parliament, Crown And The Rule Of Law In Britain -- The Logic Of Commitment -- The Role Of Development Professionals : Measurement And Promotion -- Conclusion: A Commitment To Equality Begins At Home. Italian Renaissance Humanism in the mirror
Patrick Baker
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Ideas in context, Cambridge, United Kingdom, 2015
This important study takes a new approach to understanding Italian Renaissance humanism, based not on scholarly paradigms or philosophical concepts, but on a neglected yet indispensable perspective: the humanists’ understanding of themselves. Through a series of close textual studies, Patrick Baker excavates what humanists thought was important about humanism, how they viewed their own history, what goals they enunciated, what triumphs they celebrated – in short, he attempts to reconstruct humanist identity. What emerges is a small, coherent community dedicated primarily not to political ideology, a philosophy of man, an educational ethos, or moral improvement, but rather to the pursuit of classical Latin eloquence. Grasping the significance this stylistic ideal had for the humanists is essential to understanding both their sense of themselves and the importance they and others attached to their movement. For eloquence was no mere aesthetic affair, but rather appeared to them as the guarantor of civilization itself.

Graded Rings and Graded Grothendieck Groups (London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series, Series Number 435)
Roozbeh Hazrat
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series, 1, 2016
This study of graded rings includes the first systematic account of the graded Grothendieck group, a powerful and crucial invariant in algebra which has recently been adopted to classify the Leavitt path algebras. The book begins with a concise introduction to the theory of graded rings and then focuses in more detail on Grothendieck groups, Morita theory, Picard groups and K-theory. The author extends known results in the ungraded case to the graded setting and gathers together important results which are currently scattered throughout the literature. The book is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers in ring theory.

The Politics of the Human (The Seeley Lectures)
Anne Phillips
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), 1, 2015
"The human is a central reference point for human rights. But who or what is that human? And given its long history of exclusiveness, when so many of those now recognised as human were denied the name, how much confidence can we attach to the term? This book works towards a sense of the human that does without substantive accounts of 'humanity' while also avoiding their opposite - the contentless versions that deny important differences such as race, gender and sexuality. Drawing inspiration from Hannah Arendt's anti-foundationalism, Phillips rejects the idea of 'humanness' as grounded in essential characteristics we can be shown to share. She stresses instead the human as claim and commitment, as enactment and politics of equality. In doing so, she engages with a range of contemporary debates on human dignity, humanism, and post-humanism, and argues that none of these is necessary to a strong politics of the human"--The publisher

The Art of Medicine in Early China : The Ancient and Medieval Origins of a Modern Archive
Miranda Brown
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), New York, 2015, ©2015
In this book, Miranda Brown investigates the myths that acupuncturists and herbalists have told about the birth of the healing arts. Moving from the Han (206 BC-AD 220) and Song (960-1279) dynasties to the twentieth century, Brown traces the rich history of Chinese medical historiography and the gradual emergence of the archive of medical tradition. She exposes the historical circumstances that shaped the current image of medical progenitors: the ancient bibliographers, medieval editors, and modern reformers and defenders of Chinese medicine who contributed to the contemporary shape of the archive. Brown demonstrates how ancient and medieval ways of knowing live on in popular narratives of medical history, both in modern Asia and in the West. She also reveals the surprising and often unacknowledged debt that contemporary scholars owe to their pre-modern forbearers for the categories, frameworks, and analytic tools with which to study the distant past.

Freud and the Legacy of Moses (Cambridge Studies in Religion and Critical Thought, Series Number 4)
Richard J. Bernstein
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Cambridge Studies in Religion and Critical Thought, 1, 1998
Freud's last book, Moses and Monotheism, was published in 1939 during one of the darkest periods in Jewish history. This difficult book has frequently been vilified and dismissed because Freud claims that Moses was not a Hebrew but an Egyptian, and that the Jews murdered Moses in the wilderness. Richard Bernstein argues that a close reading of Moses and Monotheism reveals an underlying powerful coherence in which Freud seeks to specify the distinctive character and contribution of the Jewish people. It is this character that has enabled the Jewish people to survive despite persecution and virulent anti-Semitism, and Freud proudly identifies himself with it. In his analysis of Freud's often misunderstood last work, Bernstein goes on to shows how Freud expands and deepens our understanding of a religious tradition by revealing its unconscious dynamics.

Moving from the Han (206 BC–AD 220) and Song (960–1279) dynasties to the twentieth century, Brown traces the rich history of Chinese medical historiography and the gradual emergence of the archive of medical tradition.

Biology, medicine and society 1840-1940 (based on the conference on "The Roots of sociobiology", 29 September 1978)
Charles Webster; Past and Present Society host institution; British Society for the History of Science host institution
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Past and Present Publications, 2003

During the period 1840–1940 biology and medicine were transformed, and took on major implications for social amelioration and population growth. New biological disciplines such as genetics and psychology consciously used scientific explanation to redefine the life of the individual. This volume originates from a Past and Present conference on 'The Roots of Sociobiology' held in 1978 and incorporates the results of recent research on problems in the social relations of the biological sciences. The authors describe different historical aspects of the interrelationship of technical experience and social policy in the fields of health, education and social welfare. Insight is provided into contemporary debates on physical and racial deterioration, the sources and distribution of intelligence, the application of evolutionary biology to social and political theory, and the analysis of human societies. The authors raise issues of topical interest, such as the emergence and influence of eugenics, the origin and impact of intelligence testing, the relationship between eugenics, genetics and evolutionary theory, and the causes of the twentieth-century reduction in infant and maternal mortality. The area of coverage is Britain, America and Germany. The introduction provides a review of recent research on the social relations of biology and medicine.

Epidemiology and Culture (Cambridge Studies in Medical Anthropology, Series Number 13)
James A Trostle; NetLibrary, Inc
Cambridge, Uk ; Cambridge University Press, 2005., Cambridge studies in medical anthropology 13, 1, 2005
This book shows how practitioners in the emerging field of 'cultural epidemiology' describe human health, communicate with diverse audiences, and intervene to improve health and prevent disease. It uses textual and statistical portraits of disease to describe past and present collaborations between anthropology and epidemiology. Interpreting epidemiology as a cultural practice helps to reveal the ways in which measurement, causal thinking, and intervention design are all influenced by belief, habit, and theories of power. By unpacking many common disease risks and epidemiologic categories, this book reveals unexamined assumptions and shows how sociocultural context influences measurement of disease. Examples include studies of epilepsy, cholera, mortality on the Titanic, breastfeeding, and adolescent smoking. The book describes methods as varied as observing individuals, measuring social networks, and compiling data from death certificates. It argues that effective public health interventions must work more often and better at the level of entire communities.

Elections, Mass Politics And Social Change In Modern Germany: New Perspectives (publications Of The German Historical Institute)
Larry Eugene Jones; James N Retallack; German History Society (Great Britain) issuing body
German Historical Institute ; Cambridge University Press, 1, 1992
This collection of essays presents the most recent work on Germany's stormy and problematic encounter with mass politics from the time of Bismarck to the Nazi era. The authors--sixteen scholars from the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Germany--consider this problem from novel and sometimes surprising viewpoints. The history of elections, narrowly conceived, is abandoned in favor of a broader inquiry into roots of German political loyalties and their relationship to the historic cleavages of class, gender, language, religion, generation and locality. The essays not only present archival findings, but they also pursue more theoretical or conjectural paradigms, and raise new questions. Collectively, the authors explore the twin problems of electoral politics and social dislocation with language that is intentionally familiar, inventive, and allusive all at once--in a sense reflecting the Germans' own unfinished search for political consensus and social stability.

Spacecraft Trajectory Optimization (Cambridge Aerospace Series, Series Number 29)
edited by Bruce A. Conway
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), 1, 2014-03-01
This is a long-overdue volume dedicated to space trajectory optimization. Interest in the subject has grown, as space missions of increasing levels of sophistication, complexity, and scientific return - hardly imaginable in the 1960s - have been designed and flown. Although the basic tools of optimization theory remain an accepted canon, there has been a revolution in the manner in which they are applied and in the development of numerical optimization. This volume purposely includes a variety of both analytical and numerical approaches to trajectory optimization. The choice of authors has been guided by the editor's intention to assemble the most expert and active researchers in the various specialities presented. The authors were given considerable freedom to choose their subjects, and although this may yield a somewhat eclectic volume, it also yields chapters written with palpable enthusiasm and relevance to contemporary problems.

War and Remembrance in the Twentieth Century (Studies in the Social and Cultural History of Modern Warfare, Series Number 5)
Jay Winter, Emmanuel Sivan, J. M. Winter
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), 1, 1999
How war has been remembered collectively is the central question in this volume. War in the twentieth century is a vivid and traumatic phenomenon which left behind it survivors who engage time and time again in acts of remembrance. This volume, containing essays by outstanding scholars of twentieth-century history, focuses on the issues raised by the shadow of war in this century. The behaviour, not of whole societies or of ruling groups alone, but of the individuals who do the work of remembrance, is discussed by examining the traumatic collective memory resulting from the horrors of the First World War, the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, and the Algerian War. By studying public forms of remembrance, such as museums and exhibitions, literature and film, the editors have succeeded in bringing together a volume which demonstrates that a popular kind of collective memory is still very much alive.

William T. Loging
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Cambridge, United Kingdom, 2016
"Computational biology drives discovery through its use of high-throughput informatics approaches. This book provides a road map of the current drug development process and how computational biology approaches play a critical role across the entire drug discovery pipeline. Through the use of previously unpublished, real-life case studies the impact of a range of computational approaches are discussed at various phases of the pipeline. Additionally, a focus section provides innovative visualisation approaches, from both the drug discovery process as well as from other fields that utilise large datasets, recognising the increasing use of such technology. Serving the needs of early career and more experienced scientists, this up-to-date reference provides an essential introduction to the process and background of drug discovery, highlighting how computational researchers can contribute to that pipeline"--Provided by publisher

Ecological Climatology (Concepts and Applications)
Gordon B Bonan
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), 3, 2015
The third edition of Gordon Bonan's comprehensive textbook introduces an interdisciplinary framework to understand the interaction between terrestrial ecosystems and climate change. Ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying ecology, environmental science, atmospheric science, and geography, it reviews basic meteorological, hydrological, and ecological concepts to examine the physical, chemical, and biological processes by which terrestrial ecosystems affect and are affected by climate. This new edition has been thoroughly updated with new science and references. The scope has been expanded beyond its initial focus on energy, water, and carbon to include reactive gases and aerosols in the atmosphere. The new edition emphasizes the Earth as a system, recognizing interconnections among the planet's physical, chemical, biological, and socioeconomic components, and emphasizing global environmental sustainability. Each chapter contains chapter summaries and review questions, and with over 400 illustrations, including many in color, this textbook will once again be an essential student guide.

The Two Italies: Economic Relations Between the Norman Kingdom of Sicily and the Northern Communes (Cambridge Studies in Medieval Life and Thought: Third Series, Series Number 9)
David Abulafia
Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), 1, 1977

This book is a study of the economic development of different areas of twelfth-century Italy whose commercial interests were closely inter related: the Norman Kingdom of Sicily, famed for the wealth of its rulers, and the maritime ports of Genoa, Pisa and Venice, which were actively extending their trading interests throughout the Mediterranean. On the basis of largely untapped sources in Genoa and other north Italian archives, this book seeks to explain how the north Italian merchants attempted to extend and to protect their interests in the kingdom of Sicily, by agreements with the Norman rulers or with those in Germany and Byzantium who aimed at the conquest of Sicily and southern Italy. Dr Abulafia argues that the kingdom was a major exporter of wheat and raw cotton, and that in the twelfth century the northern merchants gained a substantial hold over these exports. The Norman kings profited greatly from the opportunity to sell the produce of their realm, and in particular of their own estates, to an assured market; the lack of intensive industry in the kingdom left the northerners free to produce textiles out of southern fibres. Thus signs emerge of two Italies, an agrarian and pastoral south, against a north with incipient industrial activity, based partly on the commercial exploitation of the south.
