This book presents a study of Japanese involvement in post-Soviet Central Asia since the independence of these countries in 1991, examining the reasons for progress and stagnation in this multi-lateral relationship. Featuring interviews with decision-makers and experts from Japan, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and the Philippines, this book argues that Japan’s impact on Central Asia and its connectivity has been underappreciated. It demonstrates that Japan’s infrastructural footprint in the New Silk Road significantly pre-dated China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and that the financial and policy contribution driven by Japanese officials was of a similar order of magnitude. It also goes on to show that Japan was the first major power outside of post-Soviet Central Asia to articulate a dedicated Silk Road diplomacy vis-à-vis the region before the United States and China, and the first to sponsor pivotal assistance. Being the first detailed analytical account of the diplomatic impact made on the New Silk Road by various Japanese actors beyond formal diplomacy, this book will be useful to students and scholars of Japanese politics, as well as Asian politics and international politics more generally.

The use of air photographs as an aid to understanding and mapping natural resources has long been an established technique. The advent of satellite imagery was, and indeed by many still is, regarded as a very high altitude air photograph, but with the introduction of digital techniques the full analysis of imagery has become very sophisticated. Radar imagery presents the resource scientist with a new imaging technique that has to be understood and used, a technique which, although in many respects still in its infancy, has considerable applications potential for resources studies. Remote sensing now forms an element in study courses in the earth sciences in many major universities and a number of universities offer specialist post-graduate courses in remote sensing. Nevertheless there are a large number of earth scientists already working with imagery who have progressed from the air photograph base to satellite imagery. Such scientists may find themselves confronted with microwave or radar imagery or wish to use the imagery for surveys and find themselves hindered by a lack of understanding of the differences between radar imagery and optical imagery. Unfortunately reference to much of the literature will not be of very great help, many excellent text books on the theory and interaction of microwaves, on instrument design and construction and on the research carried out on specific target types exist, most of these are however written for specialists who are usually physicists not earth scientists. Immigration to Sweden in the last three decades consists mainly of refugees and family reunion migrants. The increasing numbers of asylum seekers in the world together with a relatively liberal admission policy toward refugees and family reunion implied an increased population for Sweden due to net immigration. In the same period, various integration policies have been implemented to increase both labor market integration and political participation. Settlement policies toward newly arrived immigrants have been shifting over time according to the political and labor market context.Citizenship policies have over time changed and today include both the possibility of dual citizenship and the right to vote by noncitizens in local and provincial elections. Although intentions are good, both the employment integration and the voting participation by immigrants are substantially lower than for native Swedes and this questions the e ectiveness of integration policies.From the middle of the 1980s, increasing numbers of asylum seekers have been looking for protection in numerous European countries. Like many of its neighboring states, Sweden has been a ected by this dramatic increase in refugee movement worldwide. The large in ow of people seeking refuge during the 1980s, 1990s, and continuing into the rst years of the new millennium, together with a huge increase of unemployment and a low employment integration of immigrants, has provoked a debate about adjusting immigration and integration policies in Sweden. The deep economic recession of the early nineties obviously fueled this attention and directed it particularly toward the economic integration of immigrants and refugees. The continuing weak labor market integration of immigrants and refugees in the rst half the new millennium led to a shift of focus in the public and political debate and evoked discussion of other integration arenas like education, politics, associations, and law. Mit dem 2016 in Essen durchgeführten Kongress erreichte die 2009 in Salamanca gegründete deutsch-iberische Tagungsreihe "Contrastivica" ihre vierte Auflage. Das Thema der Tagung lautete "Kontrastive Pragmatik und ihre Vermittlung: Deutsch, Spanisch und Portugiesisch im Vergleich" und fokussierte damit einen für die kulturellen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen den deutschsprachigen Ländern und der iberischen Halbinsel besonders wichtigen Bereich der Kommunikation: Die linguistische Pragmatik untersucht "Sprache als Handeln" in bestimmten Kontexten. In Hinblick auf die transkulturelle Kommunikation ist es essentiell, Übereinstimmungen und Differenzen in der Pragmatik wissenschaftlich zu erkennen, zu vermitteln und in der Praxis anzuwenden, um zu einer funktionierenden Kommunikation möglichst ohne Missverständnisse zu gelangen. Im Rahmen der Tagung wurden sowohl die linguistischen Grundlagen als auch die didaktischen Implikationen für die Fremdsprachenvermittlung an Schulen, Hochschulen und in der Erwachsenenbildung untersucht.
