They counter the paucity of research surrounding the impacts of such policies on menstruators and the locations offering leave. Levitt and Barnack-Tavlaris argue that without addressing underlying sexist beliefs and attitudes as well as gender discrimination, menstrual leave could have negative effects on menstruators. The authors augment this research with findings from their previous study, which examines attitudes toward and perceptions of menstrual leave. Against this background, the chapter concludes with a discussion of alternative approaches to menstrual leave.

Since the fortuitous discovery of its anticonvulsant activIty in 1962, valproate has established itself worldwide as a major antiepileptic drug against several types of epileptic seizures. Clinical experience with valpro ate has continued to grow in recent years, including use of valproate for diseases other than epilepsy, for example in bipolar disorders and migraine. In this volume on valproate emphasis is placed on the scientific back ground leading to the discovery of val pro ate, its subsequent pharmacologi cal and toxicological characterization, and its clinical development into one of the most widely and successfully used anti epileptic drugs, a real mile stone in drug therapy. The current state of knowledge of valproate will be reviewed by experts in the field, including new hypotheses about its mecha nisms of action, its metabolism into pharmacologically active metabolites, its unique distribution characteristics, its unwanted hepatotoxic and terato genic adverse effects and its various clinical uses. Furthermore, the wide variety of available pharmaceutical formulations of valproate, including novel controlled-release formulations, will be outlined. The monograph is aimed at a broad readership, particularly neurologists, psychiatrists and basic scientists working in the field of epilepsy research. THE PHYSICAL BASIS FOR HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS is the proceedings of the ninth Battelle Colloquium in the Materials Sciences, held in Gstaad, Switzerland, September 2-6, 1974. It took as its theme the application of modern theoretical and experimental surface physics to heterogeneous catalysis. Progress in the field by classical chemical methods seemed to have slowed down, at a time when the need for better catalysts was particularly great. The Organizing Committee thought it might be possible to accelerate progress by the application of the powerful techniques evolved in recent years for studying atomically clean surfaces. However, the translation of ideas derived from clean single crystal surfaces with well characterized chemisorbed layers to real catalysts with high ratios of surface to mass on which reactions were taking place and requiring transport of mass and energy is a giant step, raising many questions and requiring thorough discussion by surface physicists on the one hand and catalytic chemists on the other. The 1974 Battelle Colloquium provided a forum for this exchange. As its usual custom, the Colloquium started the first day of introduc tory lectures by three distinguished scientists who have contributed impor tantly over many years to this field. Measurement arrays of FPGA-based time interval meters tend to have chains of parallel delays of non-normalized duration. When determining fractional values at the boundaries of the measured interval, the time-to-digital interpolation does not allow achieving measurement accuracy in tens of picoseconds due to nonnormalized delays. To improve the accuracy of time-to-digital interpolation, experimental, and numerical functional models were implemented for the measurement array with a given distribution density of elementary stable phase states (subinterval). Numerical modeling was based on a probabilistic subinterval duration generation algorithm. The modeling allowed to determine peak durations of the measurement array subintervals, as well as the duration of an average equivalent subinterval. The results are shown for the calibration of subinterval boundaries of the measurement array numerical model providing the accuracy of 1-2 ps. The picosecond time interval measurement accuracy specific to time interval meters based on time-to-digital interpolation was evaluated with and without calibration of measurement array subinterval boundaries.

Control systems for technological processes in the agro-industrial complex include the functions of dispatch control; the specificity of the tasks of dispatch control is that the algorithms for their solutions are difficult to programme using conventional means. As a tool for programming dispatching tasks, programming in the decision table language is best suited. The article proposes a heuristic algorithm for the formation of a decision tree with the least complexity index for a given logically complete and consistent decision table. This algorithm is developed on the basis of the sequential branching method, in which the row of the ternary matrix of the decision table corresponding to the minimum values of the parameter of the weighted sum of spaces and two additional row parameters, one of which is the parameter of the regulation of the structural scheme of the decision tree-from maximum stretched to balanced. The proposed tools for the automatic programming of dispatching tasks can be recommended for the design of automatic process control systems for various purposes.

This book will enlarge our grasp of global migration phenomena, offering insights into the fascinating, at times startling, realities of human migration in Asia. The chapters presented in this volume offer variety in not only theme but in approach to migration in Southeast and East Asia. Particularly welcome for a volume on migration studies, a discipline that has long been dominated by economists, sociologists, and geographers, are the chapters that approach the subject from an anthropological or ethnological perspective. These chapters bring to our attention details of the lives of migrants and their communities that are often lost in studies of migration statistics, the economic aspects of migration, or aspects of urban geography with which we have become more familiar. Some chapters are more theoretical in nature and herein lie some of the most important reasons for studying migration involving Asian countries: migration studies have, until relatively recently, developed their theoretical insights on the basis of European migration to North America. Asian migration offers new theoretical challenges to migration scholars; its dynamism is such that predictions of what is to come are not for the risk averse. The empirical studies here provide fascinating details of the strategies used by asylum seekers, of marriage migration, of the role of homeland languages in education, of the workings of ethnic entrepreneurs, of the medias role in sustaining Chinese communities, and on the incentive structures that are helping to shape return flows to China. For readers who are from Asian countries, this book will illuminate the changes that are taking place in your region as a result of migration.
