In Forged in the Shadow of Mars , Peter W. Sposato traces chivalry's powerful influence on the mentalitè and behavior of a sizeable segment of the elite in late medieval Florence. He finds that the strenuous knights and men-at-arms of the Florentine chivalric elite—a cultural community comprised of men from both traditional and newly emerged elite lineages—embraced a chivalric ideology that was fundamentally martial and violent. Chivalry helped to shape a common identity among these men based on the profession of arms and the ready use of violence against both their peers and those they perceived to be their social inferiors. This violence, often transgressive in nature, was not only crucial to asserting and defending personal, familial, and corporate honor, but was also inherently praiseworthy. In this way, Sposato highlights the sharp differences between chivalry and the more familiar civic ideology of the popolo grasso, the Florentine mercantile and banking elite who came to dominate Florence politically and economically during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. As a result, in Forged in the Shadow of Mar s, Sposato challenges the traditional scholarly view of chivalry as foreign to the social and cultural landscape of Florence and contests its reputation as a civilizing force. By reexamining the connection between chivalric literature and actual practice and identity formation among historical knights and men-at-arms, he likewise provides an important corrective to assumptions about the nature of elite violence and identity in medieval Italian cities.

It is interesting to note that the period in which the linguistic relativity hypothesis was being propounded coincides with that link in the great chain of being which Arthur O. Lovejoy has called "diversitarianism". Coming as a reaction to a longer period of "uniformitarianism", where the basic assumption was that "what is most important, most valuable, normal, in men consists in what is the same in all men", the assumption of diversitarianism, on the contrary, proclaimed that it is the diversity itself of "men and ages and peoples, in their ways of thinking and feeling and expressing themselves in arts and institutions" that is "'natural' and necessary, and also supremely desirable and right". A major consequence of this premise was that the Eigentümlichkeit, the characteristic feature, that which sets one individual, nation, or race off from another, was sought and cultivated. Although this idea, Lovejoy writes, had a long prehistory it reached its climax in the 1790's among the original German Romanticists. Although Lovejoy does not mention language explicitly, for Herder, the chief spokesman of early German Romanticism, language was a nation's most characteristic possession, comprising its mentality and Weltanschauung.

Martin Bubers Anthologien Bearbeitungen chassidischer Erzählungen und Legenden gehören zu seinen populärsten Werken. Nicht zuletzt dank dieser Schriften wurde eine ganze Generation junger jüdischer Intellektueller und Schriftsteller von Franz Kaftka bis zu Gershom Scholem mit der chassidischen Religiosität bekannt gemacht und durch diese geprägt. Der vorliegende Band konzentriert sich auf die frühe Schaffensphase Bubers, in der er das ausgewählte Material zumeist erheblichen literarischen Bearbeitungen unterzog. Der Band enthält neben den beiden größeren Sammlungen »Die Geschichten des Rabbi Nachman« (1906) und »Die Legende des Baalschem« (1908) eine Reihe kleinerer Legenden. Erstmals werden im Kommentar des Bandes die teils gravierenden Umarbeitungen dokumentiert, die Buber in späteren Auflagen vornahm, sowie die Originalquellen nachgewiesen, auf die er zurückgegriffen hat. With the collapse of the Soviet system, the long-neglected history of the early capitalists is being recovered and rewritten. Is justice only achievable by means of bureaucratization or might it first arrive with the end of bureaucracy? Bureaucratic Fanatics shows how this ever more contentious question in contemporary politics belongs to the political-theological underpinnings of bureaucratization itself. At the end of the 18th century, a new and paradoxical kind of fanaticism emerged - rational fanaticism - that propelled the intensive biopolitical management of everyday life in Europe and North America as well as the extensive colonial exploitation of the earth and its peoples. These excesses of bureaucratization incited in turn increasingly fanatical forms of resistance. And they inspired literary production that provocatively presented the outrageous contours of rationalization. Combining political theory with readings of Kleist, Melville, Conrad, and Kafka, this genealogy of bureaucratic fanaticism relates two extreme figures: fanatical bureaucrats driven to the ends of the earth and to the limits of humanity by the rationality of the apparatuses they serve; and peculiar fanatics who passionately, albeit seemingly passively, resist the encroachments of bureaucratization.
