<p>Dating back to the eighth century C.E., the <i>Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch</i> is a foundational text of Chan/Zen Buddhism that reveals much about the early evolution of Chinese Chan and the ideological origins of Japanese Zen and Korean Son. Purported to be the recorded words of the famed Huineng, who was understood to be the Sixth Patriarch of Chan and the father of all later Chan/Zen Buddhism, the <i>Platform Sutra</i> illuminates fundamental Chan Buddhist principles in an expressive sermon that describes how Huineng overcame great personal and ideological challenges to uphold the exalted lineage of the enlightened Chan patriarchs while realizing the ultimate Buddhist truth of the original, pure nature of all sentient beings.</p> <p>Huineng seems to reject meditation, the value of good karma, and the worship of the buddhas, conferring instead a set of "formless precepts" on his audience, marked by embedded notes in the text. In his central message, an inherent, perfect buddha nature stands as the original true condition of all sentient beings, which people of all backgrounds can experience for themselves. Philip Yampolsky's masterful translation contains extensive explanatory notes and an edited, amended version of the Chinese text. His introduction critically considers the background and historical setting of the work and locates Huineng's place within the history and legends of Chan Buddhism. This new edition features a foreword by Morten Schlütter further situating the <i>Platform Sutra</i> within recent historical research and textual evidence, and an updated glossary that includes the modern pinyin system of transcription.</p> <p> Columbia University Press</p>

In the depths of the Polish countryside lies the little town of Rakw (Racovia). Rakw today shows few signs of its illustrious history as the chief center for progressive religious thinking in Europe. Founded as a utopian community in 1569, by the early seventeenth century it had become "the Unitarian capital of Europe." Its academy attracted scholars and students from all over the Continent. Hundreds of books poured from its presses, including the famous Racovian Catechism, published four centuries ago and still in print to this day. Though the Racovian experiment eventually fell victim to the forces of religious repression, the ripples arising from this little community have spread in ever-widening circles during the ensuing centuries, and their effects can still be seen today.

The publication in 1927 of Martin Heidegger’s magnum opus signaled an intellectual event of the first order and had an impact in fields far beyond that of philosophy proper. __Being and Time__ has long been recognized as a landmark work of the twentieth century for its original analyses of the character of philosophic inquiry and the relation of the possibility of such inquiry to the human situation. Still provocative and much disputed, Heidegger’s text has been taken as the inspiration for a variety of innovative movements in fields ranging from psychoanalysis, literary theory, and existentialism to ethics, hermeneutics, and theology. A work that disturbs the traditions of philosophizing that it inherits, __Being and Time__ raises questions about the end of philosophy and the possibilities for thinking liberated from the presumptions of metaphysics. The Stambaugh translation captures the vitality of the language and thinking animating Heidegger’s original text. It is also the most comprehensive edition insofar as it includes the marginal notes made by Heidegger in his own copy of __Being and Time__, and takes into account the many changes that he made in the final German edition of 1976. The revisions to the original translation correct ambiguities and problems that have become apparent since the translation first appeared. Bracketed German words have also been liberally inserted both to clarify and highlight words and connections that are difficult to translate, and to link this translation more closely to the German text.
