Further study of the intricate detail, varied techniques, and decorative effects shows connections to French metalwork and manuscript illumination, while newly commissioned photography reveals exquisite details unseen by the naked eye. Robinson traces the development of the different styles of Persian painting during the fifteenth century, and considers a number of the problems and issues involved in establishing a methodology and system of classification for Persian painting of that period.</p> <p>Robinson begins, by way of background, with a review of the schools of Herat and Shiraz up to the middle of the century, and then proceeds to tackle in order the three main fields of controversy: painting under the Turkmans, Timurid paintings in Transoxiana and Timurid painting in India.</p> <p>The uneasy fusion of contrasting characteristics of Herat and Shiraz that resulted in the emergence of Turkman court painting is traced through the origins, development, and branching of the Turkman style into a definitive form. Then the author reviews a branch of the art almost entirely neglected up to now, which he identifies as originating in Transoxiana. Finally he provides a new approach to the study of pre-Mughal Indian painting in Persian style by dividing the material into five stylistic groups.</p>

Although the objective of the Monumental Brass Society is to promote the study both of monumental brasses and of incised slabs, research on the two media has proceeded along separate and largely independent lines. This is the first work to combine the stylistic analysis of monumental brasses with incised slabs. Like brasses, incised slabs are susceptible to stylistic analysis to identify workshop groupings. This book identifies existing and recorded Purbeck marble incised slabs from the pre-Black Death London workshops and compares their designs with those of contemporary brasses. The result is a fuller picture than has previously been available of the operations of the London marblers before the Black Death. It suggests that in the late thirteenth century production was on a larger scale than previously believed, and evidence is outlined for the existence of multiple workshops producing brasses and incised slabs in London for much of the period covered by this study

This second volume continues with a description of the fine Georgian monuments of the Tao region, including Ihan, Ök Vank, and Haho. The Pontus region comes next, the centre of the medieval Greek empire of Trebizond. The many Byzantine churches of Trabzon itself are covered, including Aya Sofya and the nearby monasteries of Sumela and Vazelon. The many surviving churches and castles of this period and later in the Pontus are also dealt with. There follows a survey of the early Turkish architecture of Erzurum and the surrounding district. The subsequent section, on Sivas and Tokat, deals with a rich selection of Seljuk monuments; the site of ancient Comana is also covered. The region of the Anti-Taurus contains interesting Byzantine castles. There are also Early Christian remains and medieval castles The volume concludes with a study of the early Turkish monuments of the Upper Euphrates, in Divrigi and Erzincan, and the border castles of the 9th and 10th centuries.

Much of early medieval Celtic and Anglo-Saxon art is based on the display of motifs – key, interlacing, spiral and zoomorphic – in well-defined panels in simple and complex arrays. 2,000 shoes in the Museum of London show the progress of foot fashion from the 12th to 15th centuries.Until recently, very little was known about medieval shoes. Glimpses in manuscript illustrations and on funerary monuments, with the occasional reference by a contemporary writer, was all that the costume historian had as evidence, not least because leather tends to perish after prolonged contact with air, and very few actual examples survived. In recent years, however, nearly 2,000 shoes, many complete and in near-perfect condition, have been discovered preserved on the north bank of the Thames, and are now housed in the Museum of London. This collection, all from well-dated archaeological contexts, fills this vast gap in knowledge, making it possible to chart precisely the progress of shoe fashion between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. The compilation focuses mainly on Europe, with about 23 from Persia, Turkey and India to bear witness to the flowering of oriental (Islamic) manuscript illumination, especially in the 16th century. South America is represented by a pleated manuscript. China and Japan were not included. The Qur'an was also excluded due to their renouncement of pictorial depction imposed by the Islamic religion itself.

The end of the worldand of timewas expected by many to occur in the year 1000. This was based on references in the Bible, which also described in considerable architectural detail the Heavenly City of Jerusalem that was to come. The essays in this book look at the contrast between the heavenly architecture of prophecy and the Romanesque architecture that did appear. At the turn of the first millennium, spiritual and historical notions of time were held simultaneously. The powerful imagery of an ideal, translucent kingdom of heaven permeated the European imagination at the same time that the massive style of Romanesque architecture began to flourish. The essay "The Human Architect..." serves as an excellent introduction to Romanesque architecture with its revival of cut-stone masonry and the technological revolution it began. It delineates its links to classical antiquity and points out its innovations. Other essays focus on references to God as the divine architect, on the precious stones of which the Heavenly City is built, architectural photography, and the influences of both Romanesque architecture and the imagery of the ideal city on architects and scholars. They bring to life some of the most powerful and enduring ideas in western European cultural tradition. This book is illustrated throughout in color and black and white. Numerous photographs, drawings, and plans illustrate the exteriors, interiors, and sculptural details of Romanesque architecture. A series of lithographs from Odilon Redon's Apocalypse series evoke the Medieval imagination. 30 color illustrations, 51 black-and-white illustrations.
