In The King's Wake: Post-absolutist Culture In France Post-absolutist Culture In France Caplan, Jay. The University of Chicago Press, Chicago [Ill, ©1999
<p>Long before the guillotines of the 1789 Revolution brought a grisly political end to the ancien régime, Jay Caplan argues, the culture of absolutism had already perished. <i>In the King's Wake</i> traces the emergence of a post-absolutist culture across a wide range of works and genres: Saint-Simon's memoirs of Louis XIV and the Regency; Voltaire's first tragedy, <i>Oedipe;</i> Watteau's last great painting, <i>L'Enseigne de Gersaint;</i> the plays of Marivaux; and Casanova's <i>History of My Life.</i></p> <p>While absolutist culture had focused on value directly represented in people (e.g., those of noble blood) and things (e.g., coins made of precious metals), post-absolutist culture instead explored the capacity of signs to stand for something real (e.g., John Law's banknotes or Marivaux's plays in which actions rather than birth signify nobility). Between the image of the Sun King and visions of the godlike Romantic self, Caplan discovers a post-absolutist France wracked by surprisingly modern conflicts over the true sources of value and legitimacy.</p>

Louis XIV Francois Bluche, Mark Greengrass, François Bluche Basil Blackwell, New York, New York State, 1990
This biography presents a controversial reassessment of Louis XIV of France. The "Sun King" appears as a patron of artists, intellectuals and writers and as a leading statesmen rather than in his popular image of enlightened despot, religious zealot and philanderer.

Massacre at the Champ de Mars: Popular Dissent and Political Culture in the French Revolution (Royal Historical Society Studies in History New Series) (Volume 17) David Andress Suffolk, UK ; Rochester, NY: Royal Historical Society: Boydell Press, Boydell & Brewer, Suffolk, UK, 2000
The massacre exposed the widely differing ways in which post-Revolutionary Parisians construed the word'patriotism', and why the great Revolutionary goal of political unanimity was so elusive. On 17 July 1791 the revolutionary National Guard of Paris opened fire on a crowd of protesters: citizens believing themselves patriots trying to save France from the reinstatement of a traitor king. To the National Guard and theirpolitical superiors the protesters were the dregs of the people, brigands paid by counter-revolutionary aristocrats. Politicians and journalists declared the National Guard the patriots, and their action a heroic defence of the fledgling Constitution. Under the Jacobin Republic of 1793, however, this'massacre'was regarded as a high crime, a moment of truth in which a corrupt elite exposed its treasonable designs. This detailed study of the events of July 1791 and their antecedents seeks to understand how Parisians of different classes understood'patriotism', and how it was that their different answers drove them to confront each other on the Champ de Mars. David Andress is Professor of Modern History at the School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies, University of Portsmouth.

Monarchy and Consent: The Coronation Book of Charles V of France (Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History) Carra Ferguson O'Meara Harvey Miller; Harvey Miller Publishers, Studies in medieval and early Renaissance art history, 27, London, ©2001
<p>The Coronation Book of Charles V of France, a de luxe manuscript made in 1365 is of considerable historical and art-historical importance. Its text des- cribes step by step te coronation ceremony of Charles V and Jeanne of Bour- bon, and its cycle of 38 miniatures illustrates in the greatest details the kingmaking and queenmaking ritual which was seen to constitute an expression of the political agenda of this Valois ruler. The author looks at the poli- tical and religious significance of coronation ritual and examines the way in which a changed conception of the monarchy (one in which the electors, members of the church and secular estates are given unprecedented promi- nence) is reflected in an entirely new pictorial realism. The author examines the political and religious significance of coronation ritual in the Middle Ages and explores the way in which a changed conception of the monarchy is reflected in a new pictorial realism, by means of the Coronation Book of Charles V of France. "This is a thorough, readable and comprehensive study of value to anyone interested in French politics and art, as well as an invaluable elucidation of this important historical manuscript." (J. Collard in Parergon, 2002, p.219)</p>

When the King Took Flight Timothy Tackett Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mass, 2003
On a June night in 1791, King Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette fled Paris in disguise, hoping to escape the mounting turmoil of the French Revolution. They were arrested by a small group of citizens a few miles from the Belgian border and forced to return to Paris. Two years later they would both die at the guillotine. It is this extraordinary story, and the events leading up to and away from it, that Tackett recounts in gripping novelistic style. The king's flight opens a window to the whole of French society during the Revolution. Each dramatic chapter spotlights a different segment of the population, from the king and queen as they plotted and executed their flight, to the people of Varennes who apprehended the royal family, to the radicals of Paris who urged an end to monarchy, to the leaders of the National Assembly struggling to control a spiraling crisis, to the ordinary citizens stunned by their king's desertion. Tackett shows how Louis's flight reshaped popular attitudes toward kingship, intensified fears of invasion and conspiracy, and helped pave the way for the Reign of Terror.Tackett brings to life an array of unique characters as they struggle to confront the monumental transformations set in motion in 1789. In so doing, he offers an important new interpretation of the Revolution. By emphasizing the unpredictable and contingent character of this story, he underscores the power of a single event to change irrevocably the course of the French Revolution, and consequently the history of the world.

Athénaïs : the life of Louis XIV's mistress, the real queen of France Hilton, Lisa, 1974- Little, Brown and Company, Hachette Book Group, Boston, 2002
As lovely and charming as she was shrewd and calculating, Athénaïs de Montespan became the most powerful noblewoman of her day by brilliantly manipulating her forbidden role as mistress of King Louis XIV. With a lively narrative style that reads like fiction, Lisa Hilton reveals the woman behind the most dazzling days of the Sun King's reign. As a lover, Athénaïs risked the disgrace of adultery to conduct an affair that scandalized Europe. As a patron, she supported the leaders of the cultural renaissance. As a mother, she was the ancestor of most of the royal houses of Europe. The greatest beauty of her day, she lived publicly and sensationally until bizarre accusations of witchcraft forced her from grace in the "Affair of the Poisons," a mystery that remains unsolved. Athénaïs is an informative look at a true age of extremes and a woman who achieved the heights of power at a time when it was denied to most of her sex

Louis XIV: The Other Side of the Sun (English and French Edition) Prince Michael of Greece; translated by Alan Sheridan Harper and Row, 1st U.S. ed., New York, New York State, 1983
Louis XIV, whose great prestige earned him the title of "the Sun King," is the most famous of all the French kings. He ruled France in one of its most glorious periods, and remains to this day the supreme symbol of absolute monarchy. Now, in a brilliant new biography, Prince Michael of Greece has revealed a darker side to the Sun King. Drawing on detailed evidence from contemporary records, letters and memoirs, he explored the possibility that, underneath it all, this epitome of kingship was a shy, weak, unstable man of unexpected and intriguing complexity. Prince Michael assesses the continued and enduring influence of Cardinal Mazarin and Louis' mother, Anne of Austria, on the little boy who came to the throne at the age of five but who learned early on to hide his profound insecurity behind the ever more elaborate trappings of monarchy. Here, then, is a vivid portrait of a not particularly intelligent king, secretly poring over textbooks, preferring to command sieges rather than battles because they were more convenient, whose voracious sexual appetite right into his seventies flouted the very conventions he himself tried to impose on a reluctant court at Versailles. Without simply debunking Louis, Prince Michael of Greece succeeds in presenting an iconoclastic biography which shatters many of the accepted myths about the man and his century. The result is a glimpse of the human frailties and inadequacies that lay behind the arrogance, protocol and pageantry of France's greatest king. - Jacket flap.

Fontainebleau Perouse De Montclos, Jean-Marie, Montclos, Jean-Marie Perouse De, Fessy, Georges Scala Books ; Distributed in the USA by Antique Collectors' Club, London, New York, NY, 1998
With its richness, complexity and power to surprise, the magnificent chateau of Fontainebleau reflects the history of France. From Francis I (the chateau was his favorite residence) to Napoleon III, each sovereign left a unique mark on the structure and its grounds. Its pavilions, courts and gardens retain the echo of the artists and craftsmen who worked there.<p>This beautifully illustrated book traces the continual work and alterations carried out until the Second Empire. Simultaneously, it features events for which Fontainebleau served as a backdrop: the visit of Emperor Charles V in 1539, the revocation of the Edict of Nantes and Napoleon's farewell to his guard in the Cour du Cheval Blanc.</p><p>Following a radical re-analysis of the chateau, the author updates the nineteenth-century view in which the contributions of French artists were emphasized to the detriment of those by the Italians. Each of the buildings is illustrated by documents, offering the reader a glimpse into the evolution of this historic chateau.</p><p>George Fessy's photographs convey the grandeur of Fontainebleau which, along with Versailles, is still one of the most splendid of Europe's royal residences.</p>

Saint Louis : Crusader King of France Jean Richard; edited and abridged by Simon Lloyd; translatd by Jean Birrell Cambridge University Press ; Éd. de la Maison des sciences de l'homme, Cambridge, New York, England, 1992
This Is An English-language Edition Of Jean Richard's Acclaimed Study Of Saint Louis (1214-70), Firmly Established As The Classic Modern Life Of One Of The Greatest Figures In Medieval History. It Is, However, More Than Simply A Biography. Saint Louis Consists Essentially Of A Skillful Interweaving Of Personal Details, French History, Capetian Dynastic History, International Relations Within The West, And Relations Between The West And The Near East (with Louis' Crusades As Focal Points). Jean Richard's Canvas Is Thus A Broad One, As It Has To Be If The Impact And Role Of Saint Louis Are To Be Appreciated, Precisely Because The Range And Scope Of His Actions Were Themselves So Braod. Saint Louis Is Also A Splendid Evocation Of The Way In Which Contemporary Politics Were Perceived And Conducted, Its Analysis Carefully Rooted In The Material Substance And Ideological Persuasions Which Underlay Them. Jean Richard Offers A Sustained Exploration Of Many Of The Crucial Components Of The Thirteenth-century World, With Much To Say About The Emergence Of The Territorial Unity Of The French State Under Authority Of The Capetian Dynasty, The Extension Of That Dynasty's Influence Into The Mediterranean, The History Of The Latin East And The Crusade--the Preparations For, And Experience Of Which, Conditioned So Much Of Louis' Thought And Practical Actions. Indeed The Crusade Is Inseparable From His Royal Persona, Just As The History Of The Crusading Movements In The Thirteenth Century Is Inseparable From Him. This English-language Edition Has Been Translated By Jean Birrell, And Adapted For Anglophone Readers By Simon Lloyd, Who Has Also Provided A Supplementary Bibliography Of English-language Works. Saint Louis Is A Figure Of Perennial Interest, And The Appearance Of This Acclaimed Study In This Accessible Format Will Enable Large Numbers Of Both Specialist And Non-specialist Readers To Engage At First Hand With One Of The Great Lives Of Medieval History. The Sun King's garden : Louis XIV, André Le Nôtre, and the creation of the gardens of Versailles Ian H. Thompson New York: Bloomsbury: Distributed to the trade by Holtzbrinck Publishers, 1st U.S. ed, New York, New York State, 2006
<p>Warmonger, womanizer, and autocrat, Louis XIV may also have been history s most fanatical gardener. At Versailles, twelve miles outside Paris, France s self-styled "Sun King" created not only Europe s most lavish palace, but, beginning in 1661, the most extensive gardens on the continent. In their heyday, the gardens covered an astounding 1,890 acres, about twice the area of New York City s Central Park. <p> Assisting Louis in this enterprise was the low-born gardener André Le Nôtre, whose character and temperament were as different from those of his sovereign as it is possible to conceive. Where Louis was ruthless and relentlessly driven, Le Nôtre was down-to-earth, witty, and amiable and phenomenally talented. At a Versailles where courtiers were in favor one day and out the next, Le Nôtre enjoyed the king s trust and friendship for more than 40 years. In this lavishly illustrated book, Ian Thompson tells more comprehensively than ever before the intertwined stories of an extraordinary garden and an extraordinary friendship.</p>

Regicide and revolution : speeches at the trial of Louis XVI edited with an introduction by Michael Walzer; translated by Marian Rothstein New York: Columbia University Press, New York, New York State, 1992
<p>Maintaining that the trial and public execution of Louis XVI was an absolutely essential part of the French Revolution, Walzer discusses two types of regicide: the first, committed by would-be kings or their agents, left the monarchy's mystique and divine right intact, while the second was a revolutionary act intended to destroy it completely.</p> <p>Walzer defends the trial and execution of Louis XVI as necessary, since it not only tried to destroy the monarchy's mystique and divine right, but also required the deputies to fully explain their guiding philosophies and applied the rules of judicial process to establish equality before the law.</p> <p>New to this edition is an appendix containing "Revolutionary Justice," Ferenc Feher's classic rebuttal to Walzer's thesis, and Walzer's response, "The King's Trial and the Political Culture of the Revolution."</p> <p> Columbia University Press</p>

Massacre at the Champ de Mars: Popular Dissent and Political Culture in the French Revolution (Royal Historical Society Studies in History New Series) (Volume 17) David Andress Royal Historical Society : Boydell Press, Royal Historical Society Studies in History New Series, 2000
On 17 July 1791 the revolutionary National Guard of Paris opened fire on a crowd of protesters: citizens believing themselves patriots trying to save France from the reinstatement of a traitor king. To the National Guard and their political superiors the protesters were the dregs of the people, brigands paid by counter-revolutionary aristocrats. Politicians and journalists declared the National Guard the patriots, and their action a heroic defence of the fledgling Constitution. Under the Jacobin Republic of 1793, however, this 'massacre' was regarded as a high crime, a moment of truth in which a corrupt elite exposed its treasonable designs. This detailed study of the events of July 1791 and their antecedents seeks to understand how Parisians of different classes understood 'patriotism', and how it was that their different answers drove them to confront each other on the Champ de Mars.DAVID ANDRESS is senior lecturer in Modern European History, University of Portsmouth. Who was a member of the revolutionary people? And who were its enemies? How could one tell them apart? The contradictory answers to such questions would lead 'patriotic' citizen-soldiers to shoot down patriot protesters in Paris on 17 July 1791. This book explores why and how such a conflict arose, in a city aflame with political opinions, and beset by aristocratic 'dangerous' unemployed. Political unanimity was one of the great goals of the French Revolution; this study illustrates why it was so hard to achieve.

The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette: A Novel Carolly Erickson New York : Griffin ; 2006., 1st St. Martin's Griffin ed, New York, 2006
SUMMARY: Imagine that, on the night before she is to die under the blade of the guillotine, Marie Antoinette leaves behind in her prison cell a diary telling the story of her life—from her privileged childhood as Austrian Archduchess to her years as glamorous mistress of Versailles to the heartbreak of imprisonment and humiliation during the French Revolution. Carolly Erickson takes the reader deep into the psyche of France’s doomed queen: her love affair with handsome Swedish diplomat Count Axel Fersen, who risked his life to save her; her fears on the terrifying night the Parisian mob broke into her palace bedroom intent on murdering her and her family; her harrowing attempted flight from France in disguise; her recapture and the grim months of harsh captivity; her agony when her beloved husband was guillotined and her young son was torn from her arms, never to be seen again.Erickson brilliantly captures the queen’s voice, her hopes, her dreads, and her suffering. We follow, mesmerized, as she reveals every detail of her remarkable, eventful life—from her teenage years when she began keeping a diary to her final days when she awaited her own bloody appointment with the guillotine.

When the King Took Flight Timothy Tackett Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, First Edition, 2003
Though avid reader of Enlightenment history, if I had not had to read this book for class, I never would have picked it up. I'll admit, I'm a sucker for a pretty cover, but I saw this book everywhere in stores when it came out, which gave it the stigma of being "popular" history written for the non-historian. But since I \*had\* to read it, I honestly did go in hoping that my first impression was wrong and that I would like it. But no. I really, really disliked this book. Either Tackett is forgetful, or he assumes that the reader is. He defined a "cocarde" twice before page 150. Every time he mentioned Bailly, he felt the need to "remind" the reader who the man was, always saying something along the lines of "Bailly, astronomer and onetime friend of Benjamin Franklin." He repeats himself in a similar fashion over a number of people and subjects during the entire book. Perhaps someone new to the subject (probably Tackett's intended audience) would find the book more usetful, but I have my doubts. Tackett doesn't write very chronologically . Even as someone who has read a good many books on the French Revolution, I was still jarred by his strange order, which confused the points he was trying to make. He also leaves out a few things, such as many of the details of the Champs de Mars massacre. Whether or not Lafayette actually did give the order for troops to fire on the protesters, Tackett makes no mention of even the probability. Even Unger, whose rather poor biography of Lafayette does not (as I recall, it's been a while since I read the book) totally whitewash him in that respect! (And I'm a big Lafayette fan...) When the King Took Flight is bland, poorly written, and Tackett fails to tie most of it into his main point in a significant, insightful way. It seems like he wanted to stretch a small amount of material into enough pages to make a respectably sized book. I will admit that his efforts to try and figure out what various kinds of contemporaries thought were commendable. His documentation of the spread of information was the best part of the book. If it had been an essay of about 30-60 pages, it might have seemed more meaningful. Don't forget, "brevity is the soul of wit!" Authors to read instead: Hunt, Tilly, Bouloiseau.

Courtesan Haeger, Diane New York: Pocket Star Books, New York, New York State, 1993
Amid the disapproving gossip of the Court, a royal romance defies all obstacles. The Court of François I is full of lust, intrigue, and bawdy bon temps—a different world from the quiet country life Diane de Poitiers led with her elderly husband. Now a widow, the elegant Diane is called back to Court, where the King’s obvious interest marks her as an enemy to the King’s favourite, Anne d’Heilly. The Court is soon electrified by rumors of their confrontations. As Anne calls on her most venomous tricks to drive Diane away, Diane finds an ally in the one member of Court with no allegiance to the King’s mistress: his teenage second son, Henri. Neglected by his father and disliked by his brothers, Prince Henri expects little from his life. But as his friendship with Diane deepens into infatuation and then a romance that scandalizes the Court, the Prince begins to discover hope for a future with Diane. But fate and his father have other plans for Henri—including a political marriage with Catherine de Medici. Despite daunting obstacles, Henri’s devotion to Diane never wanes; their passion becomes one of the most legendary romances in the history of France. Also available as an eBook From the Trade Paperback edition. From Publishers Weekly Haeger's first novel offers a romanticized account of the relationship between King Henri II of France and his mistress, Diane de Poitiers. Invited back to court after several years' absence, the 31-year-old widow is unwilling to warm the bed of Henri's father, King Francois I. Yet Francois's powerful mistress, Anne d'Heilly, still schemes to drive Diane from court, and Diane finds an ally in Prince Henri (the king's second son), who is almost equally friendless. Although many years her junior, Henri is infatuated with the beautiful widow and devastated when the king, hoping to get his hands on a chunk of Italy, sells him in marriage to Catherine de Medici. After the marriage, Henri continues to pursue Diane, and, about the time of the Dauphin's death, she becomes his mistress and advisor, roles she fills until his death. By drawing her pictures in stark white (Diane's friends) and black (Diane's foes), Haeger diminishes her book's effect: power struggles and court intrigues can be truly portrayed only in shades of gray. Without this complexity, the only readers this book will satisfy are those who value sentiment over authenticity. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. Review “Riveting . . . I guarantee you’ll stay awake nights not being able to put this book down.” —Affaire de Coeur “Spectacular . . . The story of a remarkable woman and her clash with society . . . Lush in characterization and rich in historical detail.” —Romantic Times From the Trade Paperback edition.

Louis XIV and the Parlements : The Assertion of Royal Authority John Jeter Hurt Manchester University Press ; Distributed exclusively in the USA by Palgrave, UPSO - Manchester University Press E-Books, Manchester, UK, 2002
This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This is the first scholarly study of the political and economic relationship between Louis XIV and the parlements of France, the Parlement of Paris and all the provincial tribunals. The author explains how the king managed to impose strict political discipline for which this reign, and only this reign, is known. Hurt shows that the king built upon that discipline to extract large sums of money from the judges in the parlements, thus damaging their economic interests. When the king died in 1715, the regent, Philippe d'Orléans, after a brief attempt to befriend the parlements through compromise, resorted to the authoritarian methods of Louis XIV and perpetuated the Sun King's political and economic legacy. This study calls into question current revisionist understanding of Louis XIV and insists that absolute government had a harsh reality at its core. Based upon extensive archival research, this remarkable book will be of interest to all students of the history of early modern France and the monarchies of Europe.

In the introduction, William Beik integrates the theoretical and practical nature of absolutism and its implications for the development of European states and society. The documents, newly translated and carefully selected for their readability, examine the problems of the Fronde, Colbert's grasp of the economic and fiscal dimensions of the kingdom, the taming of the rural nobility, the interaction of royal ministers and provincial authorities, the repression of Jansenists and Protestants, popular rebellions, and royal image making."--BOOK JACKET.

The Story of Civilization, V.8, by Will & Ariel Durant: The age of Louis xiv Will Durant, Ariel Durant Simon and Schuster, The Story of Civilization VIII, Book Club Edition, 1963
This book collection by Will Durant represents the most comprehensive attempt in our times to embrace the vast panorama of mans history and culture. Durant is an excellent historian, and although much of what the books contained is now defunct, the majority is written very comprehensively, steering clear of controversy and unknowns in a manner of detached and objective scholarship (at least for the time period).
