DSM-IV sourcebook, volume 1/ edited by Thomas A. Widiger....[et al.] American Psychiatric Association Task Force on Dcm-IV; Thomas A. Widiger Published By The American Psychiatric Association, 1st ed., Washington, DC, District of Columbia, 1994
For over six years the DSM-IV Task Force and members of the DSM-IV Work Groups have participated in a comprehensive effort of empirical review leading to the publication of the fourth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). This first volume of the DSM-IV Sourcebook chronicles these efforts and their results, documenting the rationale and empirical support for the text and criteria sets presented in DSM-IV. From a total of five volumes, the first three contain the DSM-IV literature reviews and summarize the DSM-IV Work Group efforts that led to the publication of the DSM-IV Options Book. This, the first volume, presents the reviews for substance use disorders; delirium, dementia, and amnestic and other cognitive disorders; psychotic disorders; medication-induced movement disorders; and sleep disorders. Each review contains the following six sections: - Statement of the issueexplicitly outlines the issues addressed in the review.- Significance of the issue -- frames the importance of each issue and discusses its clinical and empirical significance.- Method -- documents the extent to which the reviews were systematic and comprehensive in their coverage of the literature.- Results -- provides an objective and thorough summary of the findings most relevant to each issue.- Discussion -- addresses the implications of the clinical research findings for DSM-IV.- Recommendations -- recommendations for DSM-IV based on the review of the literature.

DSM-IV made easy : the clinician's guide to diagnosis James R. Morrison; Kitty Moore New York: Guilford Press, New York, New York State, 1995
DSM-IV presents a challenging task for all clinicians. Just reviewing the diagnostic standards is time consuming and often confusing even for the most experienced practitioner; and what is more, learning the standards alone does not immediately translate into clinical application.<br> <br> This book helps professionals quickly learn how to apply the diagnostic criteria to patients. Every DSM-IV diagnosis is simplified and clearly interpreted, emphasizing what the clinician needs to know most when making a diagnosis. Case vignettes, extensive evaluations, and the author's informed commentary combine to enable mental health practitioners to readily incorporate DSM-IV into practice.<br> <br> Taking the reader step-by-step through the diagnostic process for every DSM-IV category, the author clearly explains how to derive a complete, five-axis diagnosis. Each set of criteria is discussed in detail, illustrated by a vivid clinical vignette and interpreted in lucid terms. With this logical organization, the book provides a full course in diagnostic thinking, presented by a master clinician who has evaluated and treated over 15,000 patients.<br> <br> Among the many helpful features:<br> <br> *QUICK GUIDES in each chapter concisely outline every diagnosis, cross-referencing disorders that can result in similar symptoms. This feature alone provides a complete catalog of which symptoms define a disorder, and how these relate to other disorders.<br> <br> *TIPS throughout the text highlight crucial diagnostic information.<br> <br> *CLINICAL VIGNETTES richly illustrate the work and serve as the principal teaching device. Over 100 detailed case histories provide a framework for understanding the diagnostic criteria, giving the reader a genuine sense of each disorder.<br> <br> *EVALUATION of the patient is clearly described in each vignette. The author identifies the most likely of the differential diagnoses, shows how the patient fits the criteria, and explains why other diagnoses are unlikely.<br> <br> * CODING NOTES follow many criteria lists, supplying additional information about coding, subtypes, and specifiers when relevant.<br> <br> An indispensable resource for clinical practice, this book is also ideal for mental health professionals preparing for licensing exams. It serves as a valuable introductory text for students needing to develop a framework for diagnostic understanding. <p>The book contains no figures. </p>

Psychiatric Diagnosis : A World Perspective edited by Juan E. Mezzich, Yutaka Honda, Marianne C. Kastrup Springer-verlag Berlin And Heidelberg Gmbh & Co. Kg, Springer Nature, New York, NY, 2012
Advances in the standardization, precision and thoroughness of psychiatric diagnosis are being supplemented with attention to personalized or ideographic descriptive approaches. This promises not only to enhance the clinician's understanding of a case but to allow a fuller and more effective use of the evolving range of therapeutic possibilities. To reflect these developments, the Section on Classification, Diagnostic Assessment and Nomenclature of the World Psychiatric Association has prepared this volume which is organized around five prominent themes in contemporary psychiatric diagnosis: -major regional perspectives - ICD-10 - comprehensive diagnosis through the multiaxial model - treatment planning and organization of health services - the role and challenges of psychiatric diagnosis in primary health care. DSM-IV Training Guide For Diagnosis Of Childhood Disorders by Judith L. Rapoport and Deborah R. Ismond Brunner-Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), New York, 1996
First published in 1996. Revised to reflect changes made in DSM-IV as they pertain to childhood psychiatric disorders, this updated DSM-IV Training Guide for Diagnosis of Childhood Disorders provides specific instructions for optimally using the DSM-IV. This meticulously researched companion guide will provide welcome clarification and definition of the terms and concepts included in the DSM-IV criteria for disorders pertaining specifically to children and adolescents. The volume encompasses both psychopathology specific to infancy, childhood, and adolescence and other psychiatric disorders, such as Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Depression, and Schizophrenia, that are more common as adult disorders by may appear in childhood. While the diagnostic criteria for these are largely the same for children and adults, there are differences that emerge when making differential diagnosis of these disorders for children, as illuminated in the Training Guide. This companion guide focuses on the manifestation of various disorders, differentiation among syndromes, and qualify of characteristics. Numerous and vivid case vignettes clearly illustrate clinical symptoms and demonstrate the application of diagnostic guidelines. The book highlights the multiaxial approach of DSM as a means of assessing the child from a variety of perspectives including exogenous factors influencing development, sources of a particular disorder, and the child's innate limitations and capabilities. Diagnostic criteria and main features of specific disorders are highlighted in numerous tables and figures interspersed throughout the volume. Most importantly, the Guide highlights the gray areas of diagnosis with the hope that increased clinical awareness and record keeping will lead to more accurate classification - and ultimately superior treatment - in the future. The DSM-IV Training Guide for Diagnosis of Childhood Disorders will serve clinicians well in the sometimes difficult and subjective quest for the appropriate diagnosis, treatment, and management of children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders. It will also serve to promote the kind of dialogue and research that will lead to even greater diagnostic consensus among practitioners and encourage a more reliable and valid diagnostic practice in the future.

It will also serve to promote the kind of dialogue and research that will lead to even greater diagnostic consensus among practitioners and encourage a more reliable and valid diagnostic practice in the future.

nexusstc/Dimensional Approaches in Diagnostic Classification: Refining the Research Agenda for DSM-V/c1a62ae1bcbc437b0711821e0c29f527.pdf
Dimensional approaches in diagnostic classification : refining the research agenda for DSM-V John E. Helzer, John E. Helzer, Helena Chmura Kraemer, Robert F. Krueger, Hans-Ulrich Wittchen, Paul J. Sirovatka, Darrel A. Regier American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc., 1st ed, Arlington, Va, ©2008
Nothing less than the future of psychiatric diagnosis is at stake as the American Psychiatric Association undertakes the process of research, evaluation, and analysis that will eventuate in publication of DSM-V in 2012. This new collection, Dimensional Approaches in Diagnostic Classification: Refining the Research Agenda for DSM-V, transcends the current categorical definitions set forth in DSM-III and DSM IV and suggests ways of incorporating more quantitative concepts into DSM-V. The proceedings of a conference convened by the APA, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the book explores a dimensional approach to diagnosing substance dependence, major depressive episode, psychosis, anxiety disorders, developmental psychopathology, and personality disorders. The authors present a critical appraisal of dimensional approaches in diagnostic classification and an examination of categories and dimensions in clinical and research contexts. Clinicians and researchers in the United States and the international psychiatric community will discover, in these pages, the beginnings of a new, quantitative methodology that will transform diagnosis and represents the next stage in the evolution of DSM.

DSM IV-TM: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders American Psychiatric Association.; American Psychiatric Association. Task Force on DSM-IV Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Association, 4th edition, January 15, 1994
Known as "DSM-IV", the latest version of this mental health manual features a new coding system compatible with the ICD-10. Based on the results of field trials, a number of criteria sets are simplified for use in clinical settings: somatisation disorder; schizophrenia; generalised anxiety disorder; and antisocial personality disorder. The "DSM-IV" text is expanded to maximise clinical utility and educational value. Additional subsections of text are: "Associated Laboratory Findings" to note lab tests that may be relevant to a particular diagnosis; an "Age-Related Features" section, added to most disorders to note how the disorder presents differently throughout the life cycle; a "Gender-Related Features" section including presentations that vary by gender; a "Culture-Related Features" section for each disorder, to discuss how the disorder presents differently in different cultural settings; and the "DSM-IV Substance Use" section discussing each substance in great detail, describing patterns of use and substance-induced conditions.

Psychiatric Diagnosis : Challenges and Prospects editors, Ihsan M. Salloum, Juan E. Mezzich Wiley-Blackwell; Wiley, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Chichester, UK, 2009
Psychiatric diagnosis is one of the most important topics within the broad field of psychiatry. Clear, accurate definitions of the various disorders are essential for clinicians around the world to be confident that they are classifying patients in the same way, thereby enabling comparisons of treatment regimens and their outcomes. There are two major classification systems in use, one produced by the World Health Organization, the WHO International Classification of Diseases, Mental Disorders Chapter, and one by the American Psychiatric Association, the well known Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Both of these are being revised so this book from the prestigious World Psychiatric Association is especially timely. In this book, leading experts in the field provide a broad and integrated coverage of the concepts, structure and context of psychiatric diagnosis. It begins by addressing mental health and illness around the world from historical, philosophical and cultural perspectives. Health is approached comprehensively, to include such aspects as resilience, resources and quality of life. The book then covers major specific psychopathology topics in Section II, including new categorizations and dimensional approaches. Section III concentrates on the complex problem of comorbidity, a primary challenge for modern diagnostic classifications in psychiatry. Finally, Section IV reviews emerging international diagnostic systems in psychiatry, considering innovative models and adaptations. This book will be essential reading for anyone involved in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders.

Toward a New Diagnostic System for Child Psychopathology : Moving Beyond the DSM by Peter S. Jensen, Penny Knapp, David A. Mrazek The Guilford Press, Guilford Publications Inc., New York, 2006
This important volume brings together leading child psychiatry researchers to critically review the current diagnostic system and work toward new, more clinically useful ways of understanding childhood problems. The authors examine how existing diagnostic categories as embodied in the DSM-IV do not adequately account for the interplay between maladaptive behavior on the one hand, and children's environmental contexts, relationships, and developmental needs on the other. Drawing on the latest findings from neurobiological and evolutionary research, the book offers fresh perspectives on the nature, causes, assessment, and treatment of a range of prevalent disorders. The concluding chapter offers specific, cogent suggestions for improving the forthcoming DSM-V.

Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis in Social Work Practice Corcoran, Jacqueline; Walsh, Joseph (Joseph F.) Oxford ; New York: Oxford University Press, 2nd ed., Oxford, New York, England, 2010
<p>This revolutionary, user-friendly textbook not only guides social workers in developing competence in the DSM system of diagnosis, it also assists them in staying attuned during client assessment to social work values and principles: a focus on client strengths, concern for the worth and dignity of individuals, appreciation of environmental influences on behavior, and commitment to evidence-informed practice.</p><p>The authors, seasoned practitioner-scholars, provide an in-depth exploration of fourteen major mental disorders that social workers commonly see in practice, including anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. They skillfully integrate several perspectives in order to help practitioners meet the challenges they will face in client assessment. A risk and resilience framework helps social workers understand environmental influences on the emergence of mental disorders and the strengths that clients already possess. Social workers will also learn to apply critical thinking to the DSM when it is inconsistent with social work values and principles. Finally, the authors catalog the latest evidence-based assessment instruments and treatments for each disorder so that social workers can intervene efficiently and effectively, using the best resources available.</p><p>Students and practitioners alike will appreciate the wealth of case examples, evidence-based assessment instruments, treatment plans, and new social diversity sections that make this an essential guide to the assessment and diagnostic processes in social work practice.</p><p>• Explores in depth the major mental disorders that social workers commonly see, organized by when such mental disorders may emerge within the lifespan</p><p>• Guides students in the use of the DSM and critiques it where it inconsistent with social work values</p><p>• Presents a risk and resilience biopsychosocial approach to help social workers systematically assess for environmental influences and client strengths</p><p>• Catalogs evidence-based assessment instruments and interventions</p>

Heater</h3> <p>This is the second edition of a book that describes major psychiatric diagnoses, medical courses of treatment, and how they affect daily functioning. The purpose is to help occupational therapists communicate more effectively with psychiatrists and others on the mental health team. Using the DSM-IV as an organizing framework, the book provides general information on each psychiatric condition, medication used, and how occupational performance is impacted. Although a good effort, this text duplicates other applied material already available to occupational therapists. The book is targeted especially for occupational therapists, but it could be used for student education and others on the mental health team. Ample references, figures, and appendixes augment the text. The author is well qualified in the field. This is a useful desk reference for the practicing occupational therapist and is a good adjunct to other texts in the field. Students of occupational therapy could also find this book useful in better understanding how psychiatric conditions affect performance.</p>
