What Is Funny (""What Is?"" Life Concepts Series, 5) Etan Boritzer Santa Monica, CA: Veronica Lane Books, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2014
What is Funny? is the 5th title in Etan Boritzer's best selling What is? series of Life Concepts books on character education and social issues. What is Funny? book addresses the subject of sensitivity and awareness in humor. Laughing at others or laughing at oneself, or laughing for no particular reason at all, author Etan Boritzer approaches the various subtleties of this basic human activity asking what is appropriate and what is hurtful, while tackling issues of taunting and teasing, bullying and aggression—issues that are very much in the focus of our nation's schools today. Suggesting a gentle and conscious, multicultural message of compassion, understanding and acceptance, this book helps children, parents, educators and child professionals explore a subject too often easily glossed over.

It's Not What You've Got : Lessons for Kids on Money and Abundance Dyer, Dr. Wayne W. Hay House, Incorporated, 2010
Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, the internationally best-selling author and lecturer, has written a new book in his series of inspirational books for kids. You're Not What You've Got addresses the topics of money and abundance, with the understanding that children's earliest thoughts and perceptions about money are those that will last throughout their lives. The concepts presented in this beautifully illustrated book include: Money does not define who you are; it doesn't matter what others have, and abundance comes in many forms. Unlike most books on this subject, It's Not What You've Got is not a how-to manual on spending and saving for kids, but rather a positive, spiritual approach to the meaning of money.

The mystery of goodness : and the positive moral consequences of psychotherapy Nicholas, Mary W., 1945- W. W. Norton & Company, Incorporated, New York, New York State, 1994
In a society that oscillates wildly between extremes of moralizing and corruption, how do we define, much less foster, "goodness"? Mary Nicholas, in this engaging and provocative book, explores the relationship between psychotherapy and the enhancement of goodness. She examines the field of psychotherapy, which frequently strives for moral neutrality, and explains how neglecting morality can actually stymie its goals. Goodness is defined here as concern for others and is represented by five generally accepted "virtues" - altruism, responsibility, justice, egalitarianism, and honesty. The process of psychotherapy is examined in light of how it may promote or diminish these attributes in patients. The first section, "Reconciling Goodness with Psychology and Psychotherapy," conceptualizes goodness in psychological terms. Section Two, "The History of Goodness," synthesizes various theories pertaining to goodness from the perepectives of science, developmental psychology, behavioral and social psychology, and psychoanalysis. The third section, "From Demoralization to Remoralization through Psychotherapy," discusses the moral aspects of different mental and emotional illnesses and their treatment. The book explores not only the morality of clients, but also the moral role of the therapist and how this is shaped by specific biases toward amorality, which are inherent in Western culture and science. Nicholas believes that therapy can have positive moral results, from loving more and better to the search for truth and the pursuit of life over death, as well as mutuality in personal relationships and the larger community. Each chapter contains lively clinical anecdotes from individual, couples, and group therapy to illustrate the points made. Attention is paid throughout the book to how moral issues can be addressed in therapy without shaming the client.

Basic Bioethics : Pragmatic Neuroethics : Improving Treatment and Understanding of the Mind-Brain Racine, Eric(Author) The MIT Press, 2010 Jun
A survey of the emerging field of neuroethics that calls for a multidisciplinary, pragmatic approach for tackling key issues and improving patient care. Today the measurable health burden of neurological and mental health disorders matches or even surpasses any other cluster of health conditions. At the same time, the clinical applications of recent advances in neuroscience are hardly straightforward. In Pragmatic Neuroethic s, Eric Racine argues that the emerging field of neuroethics offers a way to integrate such specialties as neurology, psychiatry, and neurosurgery with the humanities and social sciences, neuroscience research, and related healthcare professions, with the goal of tackling key ethical challenges and improving patient care. Racine provides a survey of the often diverging perspectives within neuroethics, offers a theoretical framework supported by empirical data, and discusses the neuroethical implications of such issues as media coverage of neuroscience innovation and the importance of public concerns and lay opinion; nonmedical use of pharmaceuticals for performance enhancement; and the discord between intuitive notions about consciousness and behavior and the scientific understanding of them. Racine proposes a pragmatic neuroethics that combines pluralistic approaches, bottom-up research perspectives, and a focus on practical issues (in contrast to other more theoretical and single-discipline approaches to the field). [He discusses ethical issues related to powerful neuroscience insights into the mechanisms underlying moral reasoning, cooperative behavior, and such emotional processes as empathy.] In addition, he outlines a pragmatic framework for neuroethics, based on the philosophy of emergentism, which identifies conditions for the meaningful contribution of neuroscience to ethics, and sketches new directions and strategies for meeting future challenges for neuroscience and society. Hardwired Behavior : What Neuroscience Reveals About Morality Laurence R. Tancredi Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Cambridge University Press, New York, 2005
This book explores the impact of neuroscience research over the past 20 or more years on brain function as it affects moral decisions. Findings show that the mind and brain are very close, if not the same, and that the brain'makes'the mind. This is bringing about a change of focus from examining mental activity (mentalism) to the physical activity of the brain (physicalism) to understand thinking and behavior. We are discovering that the physical features of the brain play the major role in shaping our thoughts and emotions, including the way we deal with'moral'issues. This book sets out the historical framework of the transition from'mentalism'to'physicalism', shows how the physical brain works in moral decisions and then examines three broad areas of moral decision-making - the brain in'bad'acts, the brain in decisions involving sexual relations, and the brain in money decision-making.

Hotel Living: A Novel (P.S. (Paperback)) Pappos, Ioannis HarperCollins Publishers, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., [N.p.], 2015
Recalling both the excess of The Wolf of Wall Street, and the drifting narrator of A Single Man, Ioannis Pappos’s debut novel is a portrait of privilege, aspiration, and international finance during the wayward course of the American economy between 9/11 and the 2008 Financial collapse, and is filled with surprisingly tender observations about identity, loneliness, and human connection. “I’m homeless, but in First Class.” Stathis Rakis abandoned his small Greek village for a more worldly life, first in San Francisco, where the Dot Com Bubble had already burst, and then in Paris, France, where he is pursuing an MBA at an elite business school. After falling helplessly in love with a liberal New England journalist with a good conscience, who comes to campus with some scores to settle, Stathis moves to the United States to begin as a consultant for a company called Command. He spends the very few hours of the day that aren’t consumed by work draining the minibar, battling insomnia, and binging on more than room service. Luxury is a given, happiness is not. As the economy recovers and a new bubble expands in a post-9/11 world, Stathis drifts upward, baring witness to the criminal decadence that will become the 2008 financial crisis, as well as his new habits of indulgence—drugs, sex, and insider trading. In a world of insiders--from corporate suits to Hollywood celebutantes—Stathis remains the outsider: too foreign to be one of them, too cynical to turn back.

Neuroethics in the 21st century : defining the issues in theory, practice and policy Editor-judy Illes OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2006
Recent advances in the brain sciences have dramatically improved our understanding of brain function. As we find out more and more about what makes us tick, we must stop and consider the ethical implications of this new found knowledge. Will having a new biology of the brain through imaging make us less responsible for our behavior and lose our free will? Should certain brain scan studies be disallowed on the basis of moral grounds? Why is the media so interested in reporting results of brain imaging studies? What ethical lessons from the past can best inform the future of brain imaging? These compelling questions and many more are tackled by a distinguished group of contributors to this, the first-ever volume on neuroethics. The wide range of disciplinary backgrounds that the authors represent, from neuroscience, bioethics and philosophy, to law, social and health care policy, education, religion and film, allow for profoundly insightful and provocative answers to these questions, and open up the door to a host of new ones. The contributions highlight the timeliness of modern neuroethics today, and assure the longevity and importance of neuroethics for generations to come.

Braintrust : What Neuroscience Tells Us About Morality Patricia Smith Churchland Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, Princeton University Press, Princeton, N.J., 2011
What is morality? Where does it come from? And why do most of us heed its call most of the time? In Braintrust, neurophilosophy pioneer Patricia Churchland argues that morality originates in the biology of the brain. She describes the'neurobiological platform of bonding'that, modified by evolutionary pressures and cultural values, has led to human styles of moral behavior. The result is a provocative genealogy of morals that asks us to reevaluate the priority given to religion, absolute rules, and pure reason in accounting for the basis of morality. Moral values, Churchland argues, are rooted in a behavior common to all mammals--the caring for offspring. The evolved structure, processes, and chemistry of the brain incline humans to strive not only for self-preservation but for the well-being of allied selves--first offspring, then mates, kin, and so on, in wider and wider'caring'circles. Separation and exclusion cause pain, and the company of loved ones causes pleasure; responding to feelings of social pain and pleasure, brains adjust their circuitry to local customs. In this way, caring is apportioned, conscience molded, and moral intuitions instilled. A key part of the story is oxytocin, an ancient body-and-brain molecule that, by decreasing the stress response, allows humans to develop the trust in one another necessary for the development of close-knit ties, social institutions, and morality. A major new account of what really makes us moral, Braintrust challenges us to reconsider the origins of some of our most cherished values.

Life Before Birth : The Moral and Legal Status of Embryos and Fetuses, Second Edition Bonnie Steinbock IRL Press at Oxford University Press, 2nd ed, Oxford, ©2011
Life Before Birth provides a coherent framework for addressing bioethical issues in which the moral status of embryos and fetuses is relevant. It is based on the "interest view" which ascribes moral standing to beings with interests, and connects the possession of interests with the capacity for conscious awareness or sentience. The theoretical framework is applied to ethical and legal topics, including abortion, prenatal torts, wrongful life, the crime of feticide, substance abuse by pregnant women, compulsory cesareans, assisted reproduction, and stem cell research. Along the way, difficult philosophical problems, such as identity and the non-identity problem are thoroughly explored. The book will be of interest not only to philosophers, but also physicians, lawyers, policy makers, and anyone perplexed by the many difficulties surrounding the unborn. "Bonnie Steinbock's excellent book is . . . consistent, thoroughgoing, and intelligible." --Nature "Steinbock's book is valuable for all interested in the ethical/legal issues surrounding abortion, prenatal injury and liability, maternal-fetal conflict, and fetal/embryo research. The author provides an excellent historical overview of these issues, but she also addresses the issues from the stance of a particular theory of moral status, namely, interest theory. This gives coherence to her discussion as well as allowing testing of the viability of interest theory." --Choice "A focused, lucid, analytically fine-grained discussion of a wide variety of problems. . . extremely useful as a survey of the current state of the debate." --Religious Studies Review "Merits serious consideration by physicians. Steinbock's interests-based approach treats all questions as open -- another and most welcome breath of fresh air." -New England Journal of Medicine "An extremely valuable contribution to the literature. The author carefully identifies the many bioethical issues to which the status of embryos and fetuses is relevant....She thoroughly reviews the extensive medical, bioethical, and legal literature on all of these issues, offering well-developed critiques of many standard positions. She articulates and thoughtfully defends interesting positions on all of theses topics. Anyone with an interest in these issues will learn a great deal from her knowledgeable and judicious treatment of them." -- The Journal of Clinical Ethics

Ethics Expertise: History, Contemporary Perspectives, and Applications (Philosophy and Medicine Book 87) Lisa M Rasmussen Springer London, Limited, 1 edition, October 19, 2005
The complexity of the modern world has led to increasing professional specialization. Experts in a variety of fields, including ethics, offer advice and solutions. But where professional expertise often involves mastering certain facts, ethics expertise is distinct. It is not clear, for example, whether moral expertise consists of knowledge of right and wrong, the ability to articulate implications of moral premises, or the display of an outstanding character oneself. This volume examines philosophical conceptions of ethics expertise from both historical and contemporary perspectives, including applications of ethics expertise in such areas as bioethics consultation, expert witnessing and policy making. It will be of interest to scholars of moral philosophy as well as contemporary practitioners in many areas of bioethics.

Building Bioethics: Conversations with Clouser and Friends on Medical Ethics (Philosophy and Medicine (62)) Loretta M. Kopelman (auth.), Loretta M. Kopelman (eds.) Springer Netherlands, Philosophy and medicine, Volume 62, 1st ed. 2002, Dordrecht ; Boston ; London, 1999
K. Danner Clouser is one of the most important figures in establishing and shaping the fields of medical ethics, bioethics, and the philosophy of education in the second half of the twentieth century. Clouser challenged many established approaches to moral theory and offered innovative strategies for integrating the humanities into professional education, especially that of physicians and nurses. The contributions published in __Building Bioethics: Conversations with Clouser and Friends on Medical Ethics__ are unique both in their devotion to a critical review of his contributions, and in bringing together internationally known figures in bioethics, medical ethics, and philosophy of medicine to comment upon Clouser's work. These leaders of the field include Tom Beauchamp, Daniel Callahan, James Childress, Nancy Dubler, H. Tristram Engelhardt, Al Jonsen, Loretta Kopelman, Larry McCullough, John Moskop, and Robert Veatch. This book merits special attention from those interested in bioethics, philosophy of medicine, medical ethics, philosophy, medical education, religious studies, and nursing education.

Human Capacities and Moral Status (Philosophy and Medicine Book 108) Russell DiSilvestro (auth.) Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer, Philosophy and medicine -- v. 108, Philosophy and medicine -- v. 108., Dordrecht, New York, Netherlands, 2010
Many debates about the moral status of things--for example, debates about the natural rights of human fetuses or nonhuman animals--eventually migrate towards a discussion of the capacities of the things in question--for example, their capacities to feel pain, think, or love. Yet the move towards capacities is often controversial: if a human's capacities are the basis of its moral status, how could a human having lesser capacities than you and I have the same "serious" moral status as you and I? This book answers this question by arguing that if something is human, it has a set of typical human capacities; that if something has a set of typical human capacities, it has serious moral status; and thus all human beings have the same sort of serious moral status as you and I. Beginning from what our common intuitions tell us about situations involving "temporary incapacitation"--where a human organism has, then loses, then regains a certain capacity--this book argues for substantive conclusions regarding human fetuses and embryos, humans in a permanent vegetative state, humans suffering from brain diseases, and humans born with genetic disorders. Since these conclusions must have some impact on our ongoing moral and political debates about the proper treatment of such humans, this book will be useful to professionals and students in philosophy, bioethics, law, medicine, and public policy
