Brecht and Political Theatre: The Mother on Stage (Oxford Modern Languages and Literature Monographs) Laura J. R. Bradley CLARENDON/OXFORD; Oxford University Press, USA, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2006

This production history of The Mother provides substantial new insights into Bertolt Brecht's theatre and drama, his impact on political theatre, and the relationship between text, performance, and politico-cultural context. As the only play which Brecht staged in the Weimar Republic, during his exile, and in the GDR, The Mother offers a unique opportunity to compare his theatrical practice in contrasting settings and at different points in his career. Through detailed analysis of original archival evidence, Bradley shows how Brecht became far more sensitive to his spectators' political views and cultural expectations, even making major tactical concessions in his 1951 production at the Berliner Ensemble. These compromises indicate that his "mature" staging should not be regarded as definitive, for it was tailored to a unique and delicate situation.

The Mother has appealed strongly to politically committed theatre practitioners both in and beyond Germany. By exploiting the text's generic hybridity and the interplay between Brecht's "epic" and "dramatic" elements, directors have interpreted it in radically different ways. So although Brecht's 1951 production stagnated into an affirmative GDR heritage piece, post-Brechtian directors have used The Mother to promote their own political and theatrical concerns, from anti-authoritarian theatre to reflections on the legacies of state Socialism. Their ideological and theatrical subversion have helped Brecht's text to outlive the political system that it came to uphold.

Modern German Political Drama 1980-2000 (Studies in German Literature Linguistics and Culture, 1) Birgit Haas Camden House, Boydell & Brewer, Rochester, N.Y., 2003

The last two decades of the 20th century gave rise to a renaissance in the genre of the political drama in Germany. Although political drama has always been a mainstay of German literature, it has been of particular significance during the years surrounding the Wende, or reunification, of 1989. This book is the first comprehensive study of politically engaged German drama writing in the 1980s and 1990s, covering the works of key playwrights during the period and providing an analysis of oppositional theater before and after reunification. It treats the range of current political topics and their repercussions in drama writing, including reunification, women's issues, the media, politicized environmentalism and the Greens, and right-wing radicalism. In addition to established playwrights such as Heinar Kipphardt, Franz Xaver Kroetz, and Heiner Müller, the book looks at the younger generation of playwrights: writers such as Oliver Bukowski, Dea Loher, Marius von Mayenburg, Albert Ostermaier, and Theresia Walser. It gives an overview of recent German political drama through analysis of more than forty contemporary plays, clearly tracing connections between politics and theater. Each chapter is preceded by a short introduction into the respective political topic, providing the framework for the study of drama as a political tool and making it easy for students to see the multiple ways in which plays respond to political change. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in drama and theater studies and German literature. Birgit Haas teaches in the German Department at the University of Heidelberg.

Defining acts : drama and the politics of interpretation in late medieval England Nisse Ruth Nisse Notre Dame, Ind.: University of Notre Dame Press, Notre Dame, Ind, Indiana, 2004
Defining Acts considers how the surviving English theatrical works of the fifteenth century represent competing practices of interpretation. The plays take up a series of contests over who could legitimately determine the meaning of textsmen or women, clerics or laity, rulers or subjects, Christians or Jewsand transform these questions for audiences far beyond their original medieval academic contexts. Ruth Nisse focuses in particular on how theater translates the temporal ideas of textual exegesis into spatial models and politics. She situates medieval drama, therefore, both in its vernacular literary setting, as a genre composed against the same cultural background as The Canterbury Tales , Piers Plowman, and The Book of Margery Kempe , and in its performances, which negotiate a range of contemporary social and political issues. Defining Acts begins with an introductory chapter that reveals the dangers and pleasures of theater in a reading of Chaucer's antic Miller's Tale and the violently anti-theatrical Wycliffite Treatise of Miracle Playing . These two radically different works provide a dialectic entry into late-medieval controversies over biblical interpretation and vernacular theology, versions of which then reappear in dramatic texts themselves. Subsequent chapters engage problems such as the clash between civic rule and the authority of women's visionary experiences in the York Plays; competing ideas of labor and poverty in the Towneley Plays; and theories of Jewish exegesis that continue to haunt Christian and national understandings of history in the Croxton Play of the Sacrament . By reading medieval drama in relation to its intertexts, Nisse explores the ways in which ideas previously limited to academic discourse become elements of public theatrical performances, available to new audiences. Her pathbreaking approach to the study of medieval drama makes this book required reading for scholars and students alike.

Reproducing Athens : Menander's Comedy, Democratic Culture, and the Hellenistic City Susan Lape Princeton, N.J. ; Oxford: Princeton University Press, Princeton University Press, Princeton, N.J., 2004

Reproducing Athens examines the role of romantic comedy, particularly the plays of Menander, in defending democratic culture and transnational polis culture against various threats during the initial and most fraught period of the Hellenistic Era.

Menander's romantic comedies—which focus on ordinary citizens who marry for love—are most often thought of as entertainments devoid of political content. Against the view, Susan Lape argues that Menander's comedies are explicitly political. His nationalistic comedies regularly conclude by performing the laws of democratic citizen marriage, thereby promising the generation of new citizens. His transnational comedies, on the other hand, defend polis life against the impinging Hellenistic kingdoms, either by transforming their representatives into proper citizen-husbands or by rendering them ridiculous, romantic losers who pose no real threat to citizen or city.

In elaborating the political work of romantic comedy, this book also demonstrates the importance of gender, kinship, and sexuality to the making of democratic civic ideology. Paradoxically, by championing democratic culture against various Hellenistic outsiders, comedy often resists the internal status and gender boundaries on which democratic culture was based. Comedy's ability to reproduce democratic culture in scandalous fashion exposes the logic of civic inclusion produced by the contradictions in Athens's desperately politicized gender system.

Combining careful textual analysis with an understanding of the context in which Menander wrote, Reproducing Athens profoundly changes the way we read his plays and deepens our understanding of Athenian democratic culture.

nexusstc/The Preaching Fox: Festive Subversion in the Plays of the Wakefield Master/b931d27b550065d47346bf4000fa57b5.pdf
The Preaching Fox: Elements Of Festive Subversion In The Plays Of The Wakefield Master (studies In Medieval History And Culture) Warren E. Edminster Routledge Taylor & Francis Group [distributor, Studies in Medieval History and Culture, 32, Reprint, 2016
First published 2005 by Routledge. New readers of the Wakefield Master's work are invariably struck by the festive nature of the plays. Characters threaten the audience with comic bravado, engage in mocking tomfoolery, and parody any number of sacred forms; it is behavior unexpected by modern students of the drama, especially from what we assume was a serious and religious medieval past, and it is unlike what we find in the other mystery cycles. The comic elements have drawn a variety of reactions, from denunciation to acclaim, but critics have been unable to reach a consensus as to how they actually function in the plays. Beyond the odd stage direction and what we can occasionally glean from the dialogue, we have no idea how the plays were staged or how the medieval audience might have interacted with them, and lacking such contextual dues, we are left to speculate on the significance of the festive forms. In this text, I present a study of how festive elements allow a variety of subversive readings, while not, of course, asserting that these are the only possible readings of the plays. Whether or not readers accept these interpretations, they must, if they are truly to appreciate the plays, come to some understanding of the role festive forms play in the drama.

Political Shakespeare: The Scholarly Literature (shakespeare: The Critical Complex) edited with an introduction by Stephen Orgel and Sean Keilen Garland Publishing, Incorporated, Shakespeare, the critical complex ;, 9, New York, New York State, December 1, 1999

shakespeare Has Never Been More Ubiquitous, Not Only On The Stage And In Academic Writing, But In Film, Video And The Populuar Press. On Television, He Advertises Everything From Cars To Fast Food; His Imagined Love Life Was Declared The Best Movie Of 1998; His Birthplace, The Tiny Warwickshire Village Of Stratford-upon-avon, Has Been Transformed Into A Theme Park Of Staggering Commercialism, And The New Globe, In Its Second Season, Is Already A Far Bigger Business Than The Old Globe Could Have Ever Hoped To Be. If Popular Culture Cannot Do Without Shakespeare, Continually Reinventing Him And Reimaging His Drama And His Life, Neither Can The Critical And Scholarly World, For Which Shakespeare Has, For More Than Two Centuries, Served As The Central Text For Analysis And Explication, The Foundation Of The Western Literary Cannon, And The Measure Of Literary Excellence.
the Canonical Shakespeare Is A Product Of Publication, Commentary, Editorial Intervention, Elucidation, And Criticism. The Essays Collected In These Volumes Reveal Is Fully As Multifarious As The Shakespeare Of Theme Parks, Movies And Television, And Indeed, Is Part Of The Continuing Reinvention Of Shakespeare. The Essays Are Drawn For The Most Part From Work Done In The Past Three Decades, Though A Few Essential, Enabling Essays From An Earlier Period Have Been Included; And They Not Only Chart The Directions Taken By Shakespeare Studies In The Recent Past, But They Serve To Indicate The Enormous And Continuing Vitality Of The Enterprise, And The Extent To Which Shakespeare Has Become A Metonym For Literary And Artistic Endeavor Generally.

Greek Tragedy and Political Philosophy : Rationalism and Religion in Sophocles' Theban Plays Peter J. Ahrensdorf Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2009
In Greek Tragedy and Political Philosophy, Peter J. Ahrensdorf examines Sophocles’ powerful analysis of a central question of political philosophy and a perennial question of political life: Should citizens and leaders govern political society by the light of unaided human reason or religious faith? Through a fresh examination of Sophocles’ timeless masterpieces – Oedipus the Tyrant, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone – Ahrensdorf offers a sustained challenge to the prevailing view, championed by Nietzsche in his attack on Socratic rationalism, that Sophocles is an opponent of rationalism. Ahrensdorf argues that Sophocles is a genuinely philosophical thinker and a rationalist, albeit one who advocates a cautious political rationalism. Such rationalism constitutes a middle way between an immoderate political rationalism that dismisses religion – exemplified by Oedipus the Tyrant – and a piety that rejects reason – exemplified by Oedipus at Colonus. Ahrensdorf concludes with an incisive analysis of Nietzsche, Socrates, and Aristotle on tragedy and philosophy. He argues, against Nietzsche, that the rationalism of Socrates and Aristotle incorporates a profound awareness of the tragic dimension of human existence and therefore resembles in fundamental ways the somber and humane rationalism of Sophocles.

Staging Power in Tudor and Stuart English History Plays : History, Political Thought, and the Redefinition of Sovereignty Dr Kristin M. S. Bezio Ashgate Publishing Limited, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Farnham, Surrey, 2015
Staging Power in Tudor and Stuart English History Plays examines the changing ideological conceptions of sovereignty and their on-stage representations in the public theaters during the Elizabethan and early Stuart periods (1580-1642). The study examines the way in which the early modern stage presented a critical dialogue concerning the nature of sovereignty through the lens of specifically English history, focusing in particular on the presentation and representation of monarchy. It presents the subgenre of the English history play as a specific reaction to the surrounding political context capable of engaging with and influencing popular and elite conceptions of monarchy and government. This project is the first of its kind to specifically situate the early modern debate on sovereignty within a 'popular culture' dramatic context; its purpose is not only to provide an historical timeline of English political theory pertaining to monarchy, but to situate the drama as a significant influence on the production and dissemination thereof during the Tudor and Stuart periods. Some of the plays considered here, notably those by Shakespeare and Marlowe, have been extensively and thoroughly studied. But others-such as Edmund Ironside, Sir Thomas Wyatt, and King John and Matilda-have not previously been the focus of much critical attention.

Exiles, eccentrics, activists : women in contemporary German theater Katrin Sieg Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, United States, 1994
Exiles, Eccentrics, Activists accomplishes a long overdue task of supplementing the history of twentieth-century German theater by including the most important, popular, and controversial women's voices. Along the way, Katrin Sieg also critically reevaluates the dominant cultural discourses of modern Germany, offering bold outlines of the "hidden" side of contemporary German culture and politics. German artists and theorists have furnished many of the groundbreaking models of political theater whose critical, and sometimes revolutionary, potential continues to keep theater alive. German women's dramatic work reflects their active participation in major movements for social change, yet their plays have rarely reached the main stage or the accounts of theater history. Sieg's study investigates how gender, central to these artists' works yet missing from the language of dramatic criticism, influenced women's use of politically powerful models and prompted their invention of new dramatic forms and performance styles. Exiles, Eccentrics, Activists breaks new ground in examining one of the twentieth century's most important forms of artistic activism. A lucidly written cultural history, it will appeal not only to experts in German theater and feminist criticism but also the general educated reader.

Schiller's Early Dramas: A Critical History (Studies in German Literature Linguistics and Culture) Pugh, David V. Rochester, N.Y.: Camden House, Studies in German literature, linguistics and culture. Literary criticism in perspective, Studies in German literature, linguistics, and culture (Unnumbered)., Rochester, N.Y, New York State, 2000
The interpretation of the works of Friedrich Schiller, with Goethe one of the co-founders of German classicism, has long been a central concern of German critics. In a country known as 'the land of poets and thinkers,' the achievements of great writers have been a matter of national pride and identity. But special problems are raised by Schiller, whose dramas address political questions more directly than those of his fellow-classicist Goethe, yet tend to end in a manner that shifts the focus to a general moral or metaphysical level, leaving politically engaged readers dissatisfied. The reception of Schiller's works is thus not only a topic in the history of criticism, but forms a chapter in the history of German political and national consciousness. Given this situation, Professor Pugh's study of the plays' fortunes at the hands of the various schools of German literary scholarship is useful both to literary scholars seeking orientation in the field and also to readers with a wider interest in German intellectual traditions.David V. Pugh is associate professor in the Department of German, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and is the author of Dialectic of Love: Platonism in Schiller's Aesthetics.

This collection of multi-authored essays not only refashions and revises critical understandings of the early modern dramatist Ben Jonson and his canon of work, but is also self-reflexive about the process. It includes original essays by both established and emergent Jonson scholars, and employs materialist, feminist and queer theory in the production of its readings of Jonsonian playtexts and masques, familiar and otherwise. It is intended to encourage new approaches by students to this central figure from the Renaissance. Erscheinungsdatum: 15.10.1998

Reproducing Athens : Menander's Comedy, Democratic Culture, and the Hellenistic City Lape, Susan Princeton University Press, 2009

The Preaching Fox Elements of Festive Subversion in the Plays of the Wakefield Master Edminster, Warren E. Taylor & Francis (CAM), Studies in medieval history and culture, Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxon, 2016
First published in 2005. Volumes in the Medieval History and Culture series include studies on individual works and authors of Latin and vernacular literatures, historical personalities and events, theological and philosophical issues, and new critical approaches to medieval literature and culture. Momentous changes have occurred in Medieval Studies in the past thirty years, in teaching as well as in scholarship. The Medieval History and Culture series enhances research in the held by providing an outlet for monographs by scholars in the early stages of their careers on all topics related to the broad scope of Medieval Studies, while at the same time pointing to and highlighting new directions that will shape and define scholarly discourse in the future. This volume is a collection of Wakefield Master’s festive plays. Characters threaten the audience with comic bravado, engage in mocking tomfoolery, and parody any number of sacred forms; it is behavior unexpected by modern students of the drama, especially from what we assume was a serious and religious medieval past, and it is unlike what we find in the other mystery cycles.

Metapoetry in Euripides Isabelle C Torrance OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, UK, 2013
Metapoetry in Euripides is the first detailed study of the self-conscious literary devices applied within Euripidean drama and how these are inter-woven with issues of thematic importance, whether social, theological, or political. In the volume, Torrance argues that Euripides employed a complex system of metapoetic strategies in order to draw the audience's attention to the novelty of his compositions. The meta-poetic strategies discussed include intertextual allusions to earlier poetic texts (especially to Homer, Aeschylus and Sophocles), which are often developed around unusual and memorable language or imagery, deployment of recognizable trigger words referring to plot construction, novelties or secondary status, and self-conscious references to fiction implied through allusion to writing. Torrance also looks at and compares metapoetic techniques used in tragedy, satyr-drama, and old comedy to demonstrate that the Greek tragedians commonly exploited metapoetic strategies, and that meta-poetry is more pervasive in Euripides than in the other tragedians. While Euripides shares some metapoetic techniques with old comedy, these remain implicit in his tragedies (but not in his satyr-dramas). Book jacket

After Brecht: British Epic Theater (Theater: Theory/Text/Performance) Reinelt, Janelle G. Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, Theater: Theory/Text/Performance, First paperback edition, September 1, 1996
After British Epic Theater is the first book to fully explore contemporary British drama in the light of the influence of German playwright Bertolt Brecht. Focusing on the work of Howard Brenton, Edward Bond, Caryl Churchill, David Hare, Trevor Griffiths, and John McGrath, the book examines Brechtian techniques and style within the work of each playwright, while highlighting the divergent development of each. The book has been enriched by the author's in-depth conversations with the playwrights. The topics covered include contemporary politics and the theater, the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and such well-known fringe companies as Foco Novo, Joint Stock, Portable Theatre, and 7:84. Reinelt examines each playwright within an interpretive frame drawn from an application of Brecht's theories and practice to the historically specific situation of post-war British theater. The book will appeal to those interested in the relationship between politics and art and contemporary European theater and its antecedents. " After Brecht represents the best and most detailed engagement with the contemporary British theater scene to date." --Stanton B. Garner, Jr. "This fine study . . . confronts issues that are important to all students and practitioners of the theater. Sensitive to the uniqueness of each of the playwrights in her study, Reinelt demonstrates that Brechtian theory can be modified in many ways by those who share the belief that 'politics and aesthetics are inseparably linked.'" --Choice Janelle Reinelt is Chair of the Department of Dramatic Art and Dance, University of California-Davis.

Women and German Drama: Playwrights and Their Texts 1860-1945 (Studies in German Literature Linguistics and Culture, 1) Sarah Colvin Rochester, N.Y.: Camden House, Boydell & Brewer, Rochester, N.Y., 2003
Explores the traditional bias against women's drama and asks to what extent women playwrights have been able to overcome it.For women, according to the contemporary Austrian dramatist Elfriede Jelinek, writing for the theater is an act of transgression. The idea that drama as a grand public genre resists women writers has become established in recent scholarship. But Jelinek herself has won the Büchner Prize, the most prestigious award in German letters, and there is a wealth of dramatic work by women from the 20th century and before: both facts seem to contradict the notion ofwomen's exclusion from drama. So why has drama by women appear to have been written against the odds, and why has it, until very recently, been missing from literary histories? This book looks in detail at women's playwriting inGerman between 1860 and 1945, and at its reception by critics. Many of the works considered have never before been analyzed by modern scholarship; others, notably the plays of Marieluise Fleisser and Else Lasker-Schüler, are wellknown, but are read here for the first time in the context of earlier dramatic work by women. Sarah Colvin seeks modes of reading that do justice both to the dramatic texts as performance texts, and to the sense of'otherness'experienced by the woman writer in a male-dominated literary and theatrical environment. She concludes that an understanding of the techniques developed by women playwrights of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries canenrich our reading not only of Fleisser and Lasker, but of contemporary dramatists such as Jelinek. If all the world's a stage, playwrights can theoretically be seen as in control of the world they create; this book asks to what extent women dramatists manage to use the space of the drama to reflect the world that they experience. Sarah Colvin is Reader in German at the University of Edinburgh.

Refashioning Ben Jonson : Gender, Politics, and the Jonsonian Canon edited by Julie Sanders, with Kate Chedgzoy and Susan Wiseman Palgrave Macmillan UK, Springer Nature, London, 1998
Erscheinungsdatum: 15.07.1998
