The three crowns : structures of communal politics in early rabbinic Jewry Cohen, Stuart A. Cambridge [England] ; New York: Cambridge University Press, Cambridge [England], New York, England, 1989
The Jewish National Revival Of Our Times Has Stimulated Scholarly Interest In The Historical Origins And Manifestations Of Jewry's Distinctive Traditions Of Constitutional Thought And Political Action. This Study Is A Contribution To That Inquiry. Focusing On The Structures Of Communal Rule Forged During The First Five Centuries Of The Common Era, The Book Presents A Novel Analysis Of The Processes Whereby The Rabbis And Their Disciples Replaced Both Priests And Civic Rulers As Foci Of Political Loyalty And Instruments Of Domestic Government Throughout The Jewish World. Cohen Argues That Much Of Jewish Political History During The Age Of The Mishnah And Talmud Can Be Read As A Record Of The Attempt To Reinterpret The Ancient Concept Of The Three Crowns (or Clusters Of Rulership That Determined Jewish Public Behavior) And Adapt It To Rabbinic Purposes. Drawing On Recent Scholarship In Hebrew As Well As In English, This Is The First Book To Advance A Sustained And Overtly Political Analysis Of These Developments, As Opposed To Simply A Religious One. Throughout, Its Author Illuminates The Conceptual Dimensions That Have Influenced Jewish Institutional Practice For Much Of The Past Two Millennia.--publisher's Description. Introduction. 1. The Concept Of The Three Ketarim -- Section A: Versions Of The Past: Visions Of The Future . 2. Institutions And Their Instruments ; 3. History As Propaganda: The Rabbinic Version ; 4. Traditions about the Early Life of Abraham (Brigham Young University - Studies in the Book of Abraham) John A Tvedtnes; Brian M Hauglid; John Laurence Gee Provo, Utah: Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies, Brigham Young University, Studies in the book of Abraham, no. 1, Provo, Utah, ©2001
Traditions about the Early Life of Abraham represents the first in a series of books in the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS) collection at Brigham Young University. Here the authors have assembled and translated more than 100 ancient and medieval stories from their original Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Persian, Coptic, and Egyptian sources, all in an effort to piece together the early life of Abraham. This unprecedented compilation sheds new light on the Book of Abraham as an authentic ancient text and will be a welcome resource for biblical and religious studies scholars.

Separation And Its Discontents: Toward An Evolutionary Theory Of Anti-semitism (paperback Or Softback) Kevin MacDonald, Kevin B. MacDonald Authorhouse 11/17/2003, November 17, 2003
This book builds upon my previous work, A People That Shall Dwell Alone: Judaism asa Group Evolutionary Strategy (MacDonald 1994/2002; hereafter PTSDA). While PTSDA focused on developing a theory of Judaism within anevolutionary framework, the present volume focuses on the phenomenon ofanti-Semitism. Judaism and anti-Semitism fairly cry out for an evolutionaryinterpretation. Anti-Semitism has been a very robust tendency over a very longperiod of human history and in a wide range of societies with different formsof government, different economic systems, and different dominant religiousideologies. Many anti-Semitic episodes, such as the Iberian inquisitions andthe Nazi holocaust, have been characterized by extraordinary intra-societal violence. Moreover, anti-Semitism has sometimes been characterized by a very overt,self-conscious racialism...a phenomenon that immediately suggests the relevanceof evolutionary theory. The basic thesis of this book can be summarized bythe proposition that Judaism must be conceptualized as a group strategycharacterized by cultural and genetic segregation from gentile societiescombined with resource competition and conflicts of interest with segments ofgentile societies. This cultural and genetic separatism combined with resourcecompetition and other conflicts of interest tend to result in division andhatred within the society.Nevertheless, as Leslie White (1966, 3) wrote manyyears ago in his discussion of the Boasian school of anthropology as apolitically inspired cult, "One who follows procedures such as these incurs therisk of being accused of indulging in non-scholarly, personal attacks upon whomhe discusses. Such a charge is, in fact, expectable and completely in keepingwith the thesis of this essay. We wish to state that no personal attacks areintended." No personal or ethnic attacks are intended here, either. Nevertheless, the charge that this is an anti-Semitic book is, to useWhite's phrase, expectable and completely in keeping wit

Intelligent Person's Guide to Judaism (Intelligent Person's Guide S.) Shmuley Boteach, Shmuel Boteach London : Duckworth Overlook, 2005., Revised ed., 11/25/2005
"What does it mean that we are spiritual beings? Can humans bring harmony to their dual spiritual and material nature and achieve success? Shmuley Boteach tackles this important issue in a freshly argued book that will stir up debate. Arguing that Judaism possesses a core of wisdom that appeals to Jews and non-Jews alike, Shmuley Boteach rejects Judaism seeking piety in abstractions, in rationalising injustice and suffering, in explaining the Holocaust away as a punishment for assimilation. He pleads for recognition of the fact that, unlike Christianity, Judaism is not about death or suffering, but primarily about seeking optimism and spirituality. Judaism is a religion with a profound earthward orientation and is uniquely suited to modern-day men and women who desire professional success without starving their souls."--BOOK JACKET.

The Holy Fire : The Teachings of Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira, the Rebbe of the Warsaw Ghetto Nehemia Polen Jason Aronson, Inc., Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Lanham, Md, 2004
The Holy Fire: The Teachings of Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira, the Rebbe of the Warsaw Ghetto is a journey into the mind and spirit of a sublime hasidic master in his moments of joy and tranquillity, and later, in his time of personal and communal catastrophe. The reader takes a voyage into the rich and variegated world of twentieth-century Hasidism in Poland, a world destroyed by the Holocaust. This is a volume inspired by a deeply sensitive and poetic individual of faith who is grappling with an unfolding disaster. While the Holocaust has engendered a voluminous body of religious and philosophical writings attempting to probe the issues this unfathomable period raises in all their enormity, virtually all were written after the war, when a modicum of distance and reflection is possible. Contemporaneous diaries and chronicles written as the events were happening concentrate on the descriptive accounts of the horrors. The Holy Fire, however, engages a sustained theological reflection and stands alone as an extended religious response from within the heart of darkness itself while the catastrophe takes place, and is, for this reason, an extraordinary document and an astonishing personal achievement. In The Holy Fire, Rabbi Nehemia Polen analyzes the social and spiritual anguish of war-besieged Warsaw and of Eastern Europe's last hasidic master. Polen's research articulates Rabbi Shapira's realization that the theological garment, however holy and true, is acknowledged as inadequate for understanding the atrocities with which he is confronted. Faith, the author suggests, involves a mystical, participatory relationship with God, leaving no room for a realm isolated from divinity. Human will, power, mind, and heart are all gifts from God and are all surrendered fully to Him. In this consciousness, one arrives at a view of the world beyond judgment, beyond evaluation, beyond criticism or the need for explanation. The world simply is; it is the way it must be. Such a vision is achieved by a surrender of every particle of autonomous ego, a total submergence of the self and the mind in the enveloping waters of divine being. While the world crumbles around him, disassembled piece by piece, and his soul is simultaneously cut to the marrow by the inexorable progression of events, Rabbi Shapira continues to inject his living, unyielding, and edifying presence and occasions the birth of a document among the falling ruins.

The Encyclopedia of Jewish Prayer : The Ashkenazic and Sephardic Rites Macy Nulman Jason Aronson, Inc., Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Northvale, N.J., 1996
Fifteen years in the making, The Encyclopedia of Jewish Prayer is a monumental achievement. Never before has such a comprehensive resource been available to those searching for answers to questions on Jewish prayer. Macy Nulman has provided, in one unique, accessible volume, information on each and every prayer recited in the Ashkenazic and Sephardic traditions, creating an invaluable tool for study or quick reference. Prayer books are essentially cumulative anthologies that evolved over time as new prayers were added. Study of these prayers reveals insights into the history of Judaism, providing a deeper appreciation of the heritage that has sustained the Jewish people throughout the centuries. This volume, through its encyclopedic format, makes such a study easy and enjoyable. Arranged alphabetically by prayer, the encyclopedia entries include extensive liturgical information on the prayers, their composers and development, the laws and customs surrounding them, and their place in the service. All prayers, including not only prayers recited in the synagogue, but also the Grace After Meals and the prayers to be said before going to bed, prayers for special occasions such as weddings and circumcisions, prayers for the funeral ritual and for private devotion, are featured. The entries make extensive use of cross-referencing and bibliographical information to facilitate further study. In addition, the author discusses the many poetic insertions, known as piyyutim, recited on special Sabbaths, Holy Days, and festivals. Concise and easy to consult, The Encyclopedia of Jewish Prayer contains several indexes: two title indexes - one in Hebrew and one in transliteration - as well as an index of biblical verses and a name index. Additionally, a glossary defining technical terms and vocabulary associated with the prayers is provided. This important, one-of-a-kind reference volume is ideal for scholars, students, and others who want to know more about Jewish tradition.

The three crowns : structures of communal politics in early rabbinic Jewry Stuart A. Cohen Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), 1. publ, Cambridge u.a, 1990
The Jewish national revival of our times has stimulated scholarly interest in the historical origins and manifestations of Jewry's distinctive traditions of constitutional thought and political action. This study is a contribution to that enquiry. Focusing on the structures of communal rule forged during the first five centuries of the common era, the book presents an analysis of the processes whereby the rabbis and their disciples replaced both priests and civic rulers as foci of political royalty and instruments of domestic government throughout the Jewish world. Cohen argues that much of Jewish political history during the age of the Mishnah and Talmud can be read as a record of the attempt to reinterpret the ancient concept of the three crowns (or clusters of rulership which determined Jewish public behaviour) and adapt it to rabbinic purposes.

Israel Behind Bars: True Stories of Hope And Redemption Yerucham Fishel Jacobs New York: Jacobs Media International Inc., New York, New York State, 2005
"The lower you fall, the higher your spirit can rise." - from the sacred teachings of Kabbala Until recently, I was a Major in the Israel Prison Service and the only American chaplain in the Israeli penal system. For thirteen years, in a little office located directly below the room where Nazi war criminal Adolph Eichmann was hung, I tended to countless men and women who were both physically and spiritually broken. I know that when most people hear the word "prison," they think of the loss of rights, the harsh conditions, the abuse. But for me it was all about the encouragement, the hope, the growth. The desire to share this message is what inspired me to write Israel Behind Bars . A common life-affirming thread runs through all the stories in the book, from the gripping heart-stoppers to the small acts of kindness: bars are but illusions, each of us can choose to be free. - The Author (back cover)

The Prophets : Who They Were, What They Are Norman Podhoretz The free press, Simon & Schuster, New York, 2002
<p><br><b>a Radical Reinterpretation Of The Biblical Prophets By One Of America's Most Provocative Critics Reveals The Eternal Beauty Of Their Language And The Enduring Resonance Of Their Message.</b> <p> Long Before Norman Podhoretz Became One Of The Intellectual Leaders Of American Neoconservatism, He Was A Student Of Hebrew Literature And A Passionate Reader Of The Prophets Of The Old Testament. Returning To Them After Fifty Years, He Has Produced Something Remarkable&#58; An Entirely New Perspective On Some Of The World's Best-known Works. <p> Or, Rather, Three New Perspectives. The First Is A Fascinating Account Of The Golden Age Of Biblical Prophecy, From The Eighth To The Fifth Century B.c.e., And Its Roots In Earlier Ages Of The Ancient Israelite Saga. Thus, Like Large Parts Of The Bible Itself, <i>the Prophets</i> Is A History Of The Near East From The Point Of View Of A Single Nation, Covering Not Only What Is Known About The Prophets Themselves -- Including Elijah, Amos, Isaiah, Jeremiah, And Ezekiel -- But Also The Stories Of King David, King Saul, And How The Ancient Israelites Were Affected By The Great Near Eastern Empires That Surrounded Them. Layered Into This Work Of History Is A Piece Of Extraordinary Literary Criticism. Podhoretz's Very Close Reading Of The Verse And Imagery Used By The Biblical Prophets Restores Them To The Top Reaches Of The Poetic Pantheon, For These Books Contain, Unequivocally, Some Of The Greatest Poetry Ever Written. <p> The Historical Chronicle And The Literary Criticism Will Transport Readers To A Time That Is Both Exotic And Familiar And, Like Any Fine Work Of History Or Literature, Will Evoke A Distinct And Original World. But The Third Perspective Of <i>the Prophets</i> Is That Of Moral Philosophy, And It Serves To Bring The Prophets' Message Into The Twenty-first Century. For To Norman Podhoretz, The Real Relevance Of The Prophets Today Is More Than The Excitement Of Their History Or The Beauty Of Their Poetry&#58; It Is Their Message. Podhoretz Sees, In The Words Of The Biblical Prophets, A War Being Waged, A War Against The Sin Of Revering Anything Made By The Hands Of Man -- In Short, Idolatry. In Their Relentless Battle Against Idolatry, Podhoretz Finds The Prophets' Most Meaningful And Enduring Message&#58; A Stern Warning Against The All-consuming Worship Of Self That Is At Least As Relevant In The Twenty-first Century As It Was Three Thousand Years Ago. <p> <i>the Prophets</i> Will Earn The Respect Of Biblical Scholars And The Fascinated Attention Of General Readers; Its Observations Will Be Equally Valued By Believers And Nonbelievers, By Anyone With Spiritual Yearnings. Learned, Provocative, And Beautifully Written, <i>the Prophets</i> Is A Deeply Felt, Deeply Satisfying Work That Is At Once History, Literary Criticism, And Moral Philosophy -- A Tour De Force.</p> <h3>the Los Angeles Times</h3> <p>podhoretz Approaches His Subject As A Critic And Commentator Rather Than A Biographer Or Historian. He Reads The Texts Closely And Discerningly, Bringing To His Reading A Mastery Of Classical And Contemporary Bible Scholarship. In His Interpretation, Podhoretz Sets Himself Apart From Those Who Have Tried To Universalize The Moral Content Of The Bible, Including Heschel, Whose Work On The Prophets Was So Influential. Heschel, He Complains, Sets Forth The Standard 'liberological' View Of Them As 'iconoclasts' And Disturbers Of The Peace, But Gives That View A Rhapsodically Mystical Twist. Indeed, He Is Uncomfortable With Any Effort To Read Meanings Into The Biblical Text Or To Extract Meanings From The Biblical Text, Both Of Which Have Been Favorite Pastimes Of Exegetes For At Least 20 Centuries. &mdash; <i>jonathan Kirsch</i></p>

Social Science and the Politics of Modern Jewish Identity (Stanford Studies in Jewish History and Culture) Mitchell Bryan Hart Stanford, Calif.: Stanford University Press, Stanford studies in Jewish history and culture, Stanford, Calif, c2000
"The author locates the initial impetus for an organized, institutionalized Jewish social science in the Zionist movement, as Zionists looked to the social sciences to provide them with the knowledge of contemporary Jewish life deemed necessary for nationalist revival. In particular, the social sciences offered empirical evidence of the ambiguous condition of Jewry in the diaspora. Social science also charted emancipation and assimilation, which were viewed as disintegrative agents for the dissolution of Jewish identity, and hence as a threat to the Jewish future. For Zionists, nationalism offered the means to reverse the process of dissolution. Yet Zionists were not alone in turning to the social sciences to advance their political agenda. This study also examines the involvement of non-Zionists in Jewish social science, focusing on the way liberal, assimilationist scholars utilized social science data to demonstrate the continuing viability of Jewish life in the diaspora."--Jacket. Reading Hebrew Literature: Critical Discussions Of Six Modern Texts (the Tauber Institute Series For The Study Of European Jewry) Alan Mintz, editor Published by University Press of New England; Brandeis University Press, The Tauber Institute for the Study of European Jewry series, Hanover, NH, New Hampshire, 2003
<p>Modern Hebrew Literature explores the many ways Israeli literature is read in the US. In it, eighteen pre-eminent Hebrew literature scholars in the US and Israel offer commentary—traditional, historicist, feminist, post-modern—on one of six seminal texts. The texts, printed here in both English and Hebrew, are either short stories or poems, and range from "old" classics by the best-known writers in Hebrew of the first decades of the 20th century, such as M.Y. Berdichevsky, S. Tchernichovsky, and S.Y. Agnon to an interwar poem by Uri Zvi Greenberg to the contemporary, modernist work of two women authors, Amalia Cahana-Karmon and Dalia Ravikovitch.</p> <p>Alan Mintz's general introduction explains the genesis and development of modern Hebrew literature, its reception in US universities, and the rationale for selecting this particular group of texts.</p> <p>Contributors —<br> Robert Alter, University of California, Berkeley Arnold J. Brave new Judaism : when science and scripture collide Miryam Z. Wahrman University Press of New England [for] Brandeis University Press, 1st edition, September 1, 2002
Clones, genetically modified foods, frozen embryos, stem cells, gene therapy: these are some of the new discoveries and scientific developments that are guaranteed to change our lives and our society forever. How does Judaism, an ancient religion, come to terms with such dramatic changes? This insightful book explores Jewish reactions to cutting-edge biological issues that continue to dominate the headlines. Does Jewish law permit production and use of stem cells, gene therapy, and human cloning? Is it permissib le to produce and eat bioengineered foods? How do assisted reproductive technologies affect the definition of parenthood and who is a Jew? Are there "Jewish genes" that define Jews as a unique group? Do Jewish disease genes stigmatize the Jewish people? Miryam Z. Wahrman addresses these and other questions by examining how Judaism interprets and responds to recent advances in biomedical science. Presenting bioethical principles derived from traditional Judaic sources, she shows how contemporary rabbis and Judaica scholars have interpreted these texts in light of radical new biotechnologies such as infertility treatments, genetic testing, sex selection, and bioengineered food. Taking into account Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform perspectives, she shows that different denominations can react to novel technologies in unpredictable ways. For example, there are numerous instances where Orthodox sources are more accepting of technology than the other branches of Judaism. Brave New Judaism offers a broad Jewish perspective on compelling issues, showing how Judaism has coped with current scientific inventions and technologies, and how Jewish law has creatively kept pace with the modern world.

Jewish Stories One Generation Tells Another retold by Peninnah Schram Jason Aronson, Inc., Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Lanham, Maryland, 2005
Peninnah Schram, widely regarded as one of the great Jewish storytellers of our generation, has collected and retold sixty-four delightful Jewish folktales to create Jewish Stories One Generation Tells Another. Ms. Schram, who believes that stories form 'the link between the generations,' helps forge that link with this book, ensuring that these stories will continue to live and breathe in the modern world. The life force animating these tales is almost tangible. The printed words seem to vibrate, as if the author possessed the voices of various tellers and lent their lilting tones and ripe inflections to the printed page. Furthermore, the laughter, sobs, and delighted cries of countless listeners also echo in these pages. Schram, who has written a thoughtful, informative introduction for each story, demonstrates on every page her belief that the stories 'connect to our lives.' And when the lifelike characters woven into Schram's magic tapestry suffer or enjoy the fates they most deserve, we rejoice, secure in their storybook world?a world where justice, however incomprehensible, is always done, and where we attain happiness by living in accordance with Jewish law and in harmony with the world's natural order. Jewish Stories One Generation Tells Another abounds in a gentle wisdom that presses itself upon our complex and often self-contradictory lives, infusing us with patience, tolerance, and hope. We identify with the kings and princes, fools and beggars, heroes and leaders, villains and witches of yesteryear because, though our lives are vastly different from theirs, we share their moral choices and experience their dilemmas. Schram joins Jewish storytellers throughout the ages, linking past to present and preserving an invaluable legacy for generations yet unborn.

Jewish Tales of Holy Women Yitzhak Buxbaum Jossey-Bass, Incorporated Publishers, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (trade), San Francisco, 2002
"One of the great events of our generation is an increased awareness of feminine spirituality. Yitzhak Buxbaum has collected profound traditional tales about Jewish holy women - tzaddikot - of the last few centuries, precious tales that inspire deep thought, that elicit joy and pride.". "What is a "holy woman," or a holy man for that matter? According to the Jewish mystics, a holy person is someone who has not lost the holiness that every baby is born with. A holy person is someone who fulfills it. Stories about Jewish holy women have rarely been collected in such an engaging and entertaining form. The tales display a specifically female Jewish spirituality, giving us a peek into a world of devotional beauty that focuses on kindness. These stories of laughter and tears, humility and bravery, striving and trance, have an appeal spanning the denominational spectrum: they are spiritual nourishment for the soul. The rabbis say there are both male and female angels and angels are on earth as well as in heaven. These tales enhance our appreciation of the female angels on earth."--BOOK JACKET.

Remains of the Jews: The Holy Land and Christian Empire in Late Antiquity (Divinations: Rereading Late Ancient Religion) Jacobs, Andrew S., 1973- Stanford, Calif.: Stanford University Press, Divinations : rereading late ancient religion, Stanford, Calif, 2004
<p><i>Remains of the Jews</i> studies the rise of Christian Empire in late antiquity (300-550 C.E.) through the dense and complex manner in which Christian authors wrote about Jews in the charged space of the "holy land." The book employs contemporary cultural studies, particularly postcolonial criticism, to read Christian writings about holy land Jews as colonial writings. These writings created a cultural context in which Christians viewed themselves as powerful—and in which, perhaps, Jews were able to construct a posture of resistance to this new Christian Empire. <i>Remains of the Jews</i> reexamines familiar types of literature—biblical interpretation, histories, sermons, letters—from a new perspective in order to understand how power and resistance shaped religious identities in the later Roman Empire.</p>

The Cantor's Daughter : Stories Scott Nadelson; hoopla digital Hawthorne Books : Made available through hoopla, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), Portland, Or, 2011
The Cantor's Daughter is the compelling new collection from Oregon Book Award Winner and recipient of the GLCA's New Writers Award for 2005, Scott Nadelson. In his follow-up to Saving Stanley, these stories capture Jewish New Jersey suburbanites in moments of crucial transition, when they have the opportunity to connect with those closest to them or forever miss their chance for true intimacy. In "The Headhunter," two men develop an unlikely friendship at work, but after twenty years of mutually supporting each other's families and careers their friendship comes to an abrupt and surprising end. In the title story, Noa Nechemia and her father have immigrated from Israel following a tragic car accident her mother did not survive. In one stunning moment of insight following a disastrous prom night, Noa discovers her ability to transcend grief and determine the direction of her own life. And in "Half a Day in Halifax" Beth and Roger meet on a cruise ship where their shared lack of enthusiasm for their trip sparks the possibility of romance. Nadelson's stories are sympathetic, heartbreaking, and funny as they investigate the characters' fragile emotional bonds and the fears that often cause those bonds to falter or fail.

Rabbis : the many faces of Judaism : 100 unexpected photographs of rabbis with essays in their own words George Kalinsky; [writer, Michael Kress ;] introduction by Joe Lieberman; foreword by Kirk Douglas Universe, a division of Rizzoli International : distributed to the U.S. trade by St. Martin's Press, New York, New York State, 2002
From the lens of world-renowned photographer George Kalinsky comes this look at one hundred leading and influential rabbis of the twenty-first century. Through lush and brilliant photographs and essays by the rabbis in their own words we see the multifaceted people they leaders, teachers, preachers, scholars, spiritual innovators, chaplains, as well as fathers, mothers, avid hobbyists, and professionals. The Many Faces of Judaism is an extraordinary book about modern Judaism. It features one hundred portraits of rabbis that span the globe and the ideological spectrum, from youthful Orthodox communal leaders to pillars of contemporary Reform Judaism, portraying today's Jewish leaders, and Judaism itself, in its diversity and dimensions. Keepers of the flame of Judaism, these are people who are working in the twenty-first century but are deeply aware of their religious legacy. Some of the rabbis included in the book Rabbi Eric Yoffie, who was named the number one Jewish leader in America in The Forward in November 2001; Rabbi Eugene Borowitz, a well-known political activist and founder of a popular New York synagogue; Shmuley Boteach, author of Kosher Sex and a fixture on talk shows and in the media; Norman Lamm, outgoing president of Yeshiva University; Ismar Schorsch, chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary; David Wolpe, author of Making Loss Creating Meaning in Difficult Times , and other books; Laura Geller, Senior rabbi, Temple Emanuel, Beverly Hills, Calif.; Irving "Yitz" Greenberg, theologian and former chair of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, and Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People . The book also includes Rabbi Sally Priesand, America's first woman rabbi, and Rabbi Yosef Hadana, the first Ethiopian rabbi. Chosen for the rabbis' wide range of beliefs and interests, the people here represent the rabbinate as the rich, hard-to-define, impossible-to-categorize world that it is. Their life stories, which describe their coming to grips with their religion, are brilliantly articulated, filling the book with inspirational messages and spiritual guidance for all people-- not only for members of the Jewish faith but for people of all faiths and beliefs. The photographs were taken by George Kalinsky, the official photographer at Madison Square Garden for more than thirty years. He has authored seven books, and his photos have appeared in numerous publications including Time , Life , People , Esquire , New York , Sports Illustrated , and Newsweek .
