Black propaganda : in the Second World War
Newcourt-Nowodworski, Stanley
The History Press Ltd, Bookwire GmbH, London, 1996
Black propaganda appears over a fake signature, for example of a fictitious resistance organisation. In this book, the author examines the 'black arts' of Britain, Poland and the Nazis during the Second World War. By 1939, Josef Goebbels had won the struggle for control of the propaganda process in Nazi Germany. In contrast, it took the arrival of Sefton Delmer in 1941 for anyone in Britain to understand how to use propaganda to subvert the German war effort. Through the shadowy Political Warfare Executive, the 'black' radio stations Delmer created lured German listeners with jazz and pornography (both banned), mixed with subversive rumours. Millions of 'black' leaflets - perfect forgeries of German documents, with subtly altered texts - were produced, their aim to encourage malingering, desertion and sabotage. Black Propaganda explains how even before the outbreak of the Second World War, British and Polish intelligence had worked closely together on a number of key security issues that included the 'Enigma' machine and the German V-weapons programme. Following the occupation of their country, the Poles also became actively involved in the dissemination of black propaganda against Germany.

Treason on the Airwaves: Three Allied Broadcasters on Axis Radio During World War II: Three Allied Broadcasters on Axis Radio During World War II
Judith Keene; foreword by István Deák
Praeger; Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury USA, Westport, Conn, 2009
<p><P>This work traces the extraordinary journeys of three World War II radio broadcasters in Germany and Japan whose wartime choices became treason in Britain, Australia, and the United States. John Amery, a member of a well-connected British family, joined Hitler's propagandists in Berlin. He was executed for treason by Britain after the war. Charles Cousens was a soldier in Japanese captivity when he was put to work on Radio Tokyo with a team of Allied POWs. Cousens was later tried as a traitor in Australia. Iva Toguri, better known as Tokyo Rose, was an American student visiting Japan when war broke out. She broadcast her English show on Radio Tokyo out of necessity rather than conviction. The United States jailed Toguri for treason. Through these powerful stories, this work not only sheds new light on the history of wartime radio broadcasting in Germany and Japan, but also examines the laws of treason in Britain, Australia, and the United States and the ways in which trials such as these helped shape modern-day treason trials. All three accounts provoke thoughtful questions as to the nature of justice—and the justice of retribution. This work traces the extraordinary journeys of three World War II radio broadcasters in Germany and Japan whose wartime choices became treason in Britain, Australia, and the United States.</p>

Propaganda and Conflict: War, Media and Shaping the Twentieth Century (International Library of Twentieth Century History)
Mark Connelly, Jo Fox, Ulf Schmidt, Stefan Groebel
Bloomsbury Publishing Plc; Bloomsbury Academic, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2019
"Propaganda has always played a key role in shaping attitudes during periods of conflict and the academic study of propaganda, commencing in earnest in 1915, has never really left us. We continue to want to understand propaganda's inner-workings and, in doing so, to control and confine its influence. We remain anxious about pernicious information warfare campaigns, especially those that seemingly endanger liberal democracy or freedom of thought. What are the challenges, then, of studying propaganda studies in the twenty-first century? Much scholarship remains locked into the study of state-led campaigns, however an area of special concern in recent years has been the loss of official control over the basic instruments of mass communication. This has been seen in the rise of 'fake news' and the ability of non-state actors to influence political events. This volume presents the latest research in propaganda studies, featuring contributions from a range of leading scholars and covering the most cutting-edge scholarship in the study of propaganda from World War I to the present."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Magazine Advertising in Life During World War II : Patriotism Through Service, Thrift, and Utility
Monica Brasted
Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, Hardcover, 2018
Magazine Advertising in Life during World War II: Patriotism through Service, Thrift, and Utility is a descriptive analysis that examines how the cultural values of service, thrift, and utility were framed in advertisements in Life magazine from 1942 to 1945.These cultural values were used by advertisers to create citizen consumers who practiced frugal consumption of advertised products and services to demonstrate their patriotism and fulfill their perceived civic duties. Patriotism through service, thrift, and utility was not limited to citizen consumers, but was also used in the advertisements to highlight the contributions of manufacturers to the total war effort. The advertisements were able to support the war and reinforce the American way of life and its consumer culture by framing service, thrift, and utility in relation to patriotism and consumption. Recommended for scholars of media studies, cultural studies, communication, advertising, history, and women's studies.

Psychological warfare against Nazi Germany: the Syhewar campaign, D-Day to VE-Day. --
Lerner, Daniel., Daniel Lerner
The M. I. T. Press, M.I.T. studies in comparative politics,, 169, M.I.T. studies in comparative politics series,, 169, Cambridge, Mass, Massachusetts, 1971
<p>This first full analysis and description of psychological warfare conducted by the United States and British armies against Germany was originally published in 1949. It has since become a standard reference on World War II propaganda. Its appearance in paperback provides an opportunity for a clear appraisal of this unique campaign and of how it defined the ancient and recurrent problems of psychological warfare to suit the needs of the moment. There are chapters on policy, personnel, media, methods of operation, and effectiveness, as well as reproductions of typical propaganda leaflets, charts, and newspapers used against the Germans. For those who still debate the effects of the Allied "unconditional surrender" policy on the German people, Dr. Lerner offers discussion from a propagandist's point of view. The book also contains an essay from the British side by Richard H. S. Crossman. In a new introduction to the book, the author remarks on the importance of the Sykewar campaign for modern warfare, while William E. Griffith summarizes developments in the use of propaganda since World War II — particularly regarding Cold War policies that have necessitated a shift in the focus of psychological warfare from the masses to the elites.</p>

Psychological Warfare Against Nazi Germany - The Sykewar Campaign, D-Day to VE-Day
Lerner, Daniel., Daniel Lerner
The MIT Press, M.I.T. studies in comparative politics,, 169, M.I.T. studies in comparative politics series,, 169, Cambridge, Mass, Massachusetts, 1971
This first full analysis and description of psychological warfare conducted by the United States and British armies against Germany was published in 1949 and has since become a standard reference on World War II propaganda. Griffith summarizes developments in the use of propaganda since World War II—particularly regarding Cold War policies that have necessitated a shift in the focus of psychological warfare from the masses to the elites. Children and propaganda : il était une fois ... : fiction and fairy tale in Vichy France
Judith K. Proud; foreword by H.R. Kedward
Intellect; Intellect Ltd, Intellect European studies series, Intellect European studies series (Unnumbered), Oxford, England, England, 1995
For The Propagandists Of Vichy France, Children Were Both A Target For Indoctrination And A Potent Symbol Of The Innocent Golden Age Of The French Nation Which The Revolution Nationale Was Seeking To Recover. This Volume Demonstrates How The Everyday Literature Of Youth Was Subverted To Incorporate And Extol The Dominant Ideologies Of Petain And His Supporters, And Indeed To Promote The More Overtly Anti-semitic And Aggressive Doctrines Of Nazi Sympathisers In Paris. The Book Shows How The Narrative Structures And Content Of Children's Fairy Stories Were Accorded A Privileged Position In The Propaganda Of Vichy France In The Expression And Very Conception Of The Marechal's Interpretation Of The Recent Past And His Vision Of The Future. Children's Literature In France, 1940-1944 -- Perrault, Pétain, And The Politicisation Of The Fairy Tale -- France, The Fairy-tale Kingdom -- 'once Upon A Time, There Was A Maréchal Of France...' -- The Impact Of Children's Propaganda And Broader Implications. Agents of influence : a British campaign, a Canadian spy, and the secret plot to bring America into World War II
Hemming, Henry, 1979- author
Perseus Books Group, First U.S. edition, New York, 2019
"A revelatory and wholly fascinating work of history. Superbly researched and written with gripping fluency, this lost secret of World War II espionage finally has its expert chronicler." - WILLIAM BOYD 'Gripping and intoxicating, it unfolds like the best screenplay.' - NICHOLAS SHAKESPEARE The astonishing story of the British spies who set out to draw America into World War II. As World War II raged into its second year, Britain sought a powerful ally to join its cause--but the American public was sharply divided on the subject. The Canadian-born MI6 officer William Stephenson, with his knowledge and influence in North America, was chosen to change their minds by any means necessary. In this extraordinary tale of foreign influence on American shores, Henry Hemming shows how Stephenson came to New York--hiring Canadian staffers to keep his operations secret--and flooded the American market with propaganda supporting Franklin Roosevelt and decrying Nazism. His chief opponent was Charles Lindbergh, an insurgent populist who campaigned under the slogan "America First," and had no interest in the war. This set up a shadow duel between Lindbergh and Stephenson, each trying to turn public opinion his way, with the lives of millions potentially on the line.

John Steinbeck Goes to War: The Moon is Down as Propaganda (Studies in American Literary Realism and Naturalism)
Donald V. Coers
University of Alabama Press; University Alabama Press, University of Alabama Press, Tuscaloosa, 1991
In March 1942, a desperate period for the allies in World War II, John Steinbeck published his propaganda novel The Moon is Down—the story of ruthless invaders who overrun a militarily helpless country. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck underscored both the fatal weakness of the “invincible” unnamed aggressors and the inherent power of the human values shard by the “conquered” people. The Moon is Down created an immediate sensation among American literary critics; fierce debate erupted over Steinbeck's uncommonly sympathetic portrayal of the enemy and the novel's power as a vehicle for propaganda. Fifty years later, Coers continues the debate, relying heavily on unpublished letters and personal interviews with the lawyers, book dealers, actors, publishers, and housewives associated with the resistance movements in Western Europe. Clandestine translations of The Moon Is Down quickly appeared and were widely circulated under the noses of the Gestapo. Coers documents the fate of Steinbeck's novel in the hands of World War II resistance fighters and deepens our appreciation of Steinbeck's unique ability to express the feelings of oppressed peoples.

Persuading the People: Government Publicity in the Second World War
[text by Anthony Osley; researched and prepared by Publishing Services, Central Office of Information]
The Stationery Office/Tso, Aspects of Britain, 1994
Persuading the People looks at British government publicity during World War II. Film stills, advertisements, and extracts from broadcasts and publications bring to life the varied attempts to maintain civilian morale in a democracy faced with air raids, rationing and fuel shortages. The book should rekindle the memories of those who dug for Victory, joined the Home Guard or fought on the Kitchen Front. Above all, it offers an insight for younger generations fortunate to have experienced 50 years of peace.

Was it as effective as generally thought? Did it 'win' the psychological war over the minds of the population? Was Joseph Goebbels the 'mastermind' of the Third Reich? Persuade or perish
Wallace Carroll
Boston, Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston, Massachusetts, 1948
"Mr. Carroll was one of the creators of American psychological warfare against the Axis and for a time Deputy Director of the Office of War Information. This is the story of our successes and failures in that field, of the reasons behind them, and of what they should teach us about how to make and keep friends -- and confound enemies -- in the future"--Foreign affairs, review by Robert Gale Woolbert, January 1949. "The story of psychological warfare where the battleground is the mind both of the enemy and of ourselves, by the director of the OWI in London who superintended the operations in the European theatre. A running history, this completes Edmond Taylor's Strategy of Terror (1940) as it traces the use of psychological warfare from the bungling African campaign and the Darlan affair through the invasion of Germany and the Gotter-dammerung of Goebbels. However, primarily, this stresses the pressing necessity of creating a fourth arm to our services with the shadow of Russian expansion. In play by play accounts the techniques of both Soviet and German propaganda machines contrast with the need for our strategy of persuasion to meet the all too evident Soviet strategy of confusion.... A timely book for today, as well as a dramatic account of this particular branch of warfare as it operated through the war years"--Kirkus reviews.

Black propaganda : in the Second World War
Stanley Newcourt-Nowordworski
The History Press Ltd, Independent Publishers Group, New York, 2013
By 1939, Josef Goebbels had won the struggle for control of the propaganda process in Nazi Germany. In contrast, it took the arrival of Sefton Delmer in 1941 for anyone in Britain to understand how to use propaganda to subvert the German war effort. Through the shadowy Political Warfare Executive, the ‘black'radio stations Delmer created lured German listeners with jazz and pornography (both banned), mixed with subversive rumours. Millions of ‘black'leaflets – perfect forgeries of German documents, with subtly altered texts – were produced, their aim to encourage malingering, desertion and sabotage.Black Propaganda looks at the variety of propaganda used in the Second World War and explains how British and Polish intelligence worked together on a number of key security issues, including the ‘Enigma'machine and the German V-weapons programme.

The Jewish enemy : Nazi ideology and propaganda during World War II and the Holocaust
Jeffrey Herf
The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mass, 2008
The Sheer Magnitude Of The Holocaust Has Commanded Our Attention For The Past Sixty Years. The Extent Of Atrocities, However, Has Overshadowed The Calculus Nazis Used To Justify Their Deeds. According To German Wartime Media, It Was German Citizens Who Were Targeted For Extinction By A Vast International Conspiracy. Leading The Assault Was An Insidious, Belligerent Jewish Clique, So Crafty And Powerful That It Managed To Manipulate The Actions Of Roosevelt, Churchill, And Stalin. Hitler Portrayed The Holocaust As A Defensive Act, A Necessary Move To Destroy The Jews Before They Destroyed Germany. Joseph Goebbels, Minister Of Propaganda, And Otto Dietrich's Press Office Translated This Fanatical Vision Into A Coherent Cautionary Narrative, Which The Nazi Propaganda Machine Disseminated Into The Recesses Of Everyday Life. Calling On Impressive Archival Research, Jeffrey Herf Recreates The Wall Posters That Germans Saw While Waiting For The Streetcar, The Radio Speeches They Heard At Home Or On The Street, The Headlines That Blared From Newsstands. The Jewish Enemy Is The First Extensive Study Of How Anti-semitism Pervaded And Shaped Nazi Propaganda During World War Ii And The Holocaust, And How It Pulled Together The Diverse Elements Of A Delusionary Nazi Worldview. Here We Find An Original And Haunting Exposition Of The Ways In Which Hitler Legitimized War And Genocide To His Own People, As Necessary To Destroy An Allegedly Omnipotent Jewish Foe. In An Era When Both Anti-semitism And Conspiracy Theories Continue To Influence World Politics, Herf Offers A Timely Reminder Of Their Dangers Along With A Fresh Interpretation Of The Paranoia Underlying The Ideology Of The Third Reich. 1. The Jews, The War, And The Holocaust -- 2. Building The Anti-semitic Consensus -- 3. International Jewry And The Origins Of World War Ii -- 4. At War Against The Alliance Of Bolshevism And Plutocracy -- 5. Propaganda In The Shadow Of The Death Camps -- 6. The Jews Are Guilty Of Everything -- 7. Victory Or Extermination -- Conclusion. Spinning History : Politics and Propaganda in World War II
Nathaniel Lande
Skyhorse Publishing Company, Incorporated, Simon & Schuster, New York, NY, 2017
An “original and insightful” look at World War II through the lens of theater, propaganda, and the most important performances in human history (Richard Cole, PhD). In this fascinating book, more relevant than ever in today’s political climate of “fake news” and “alternative facts,” bestselling author and historian Nathaniel Lande presents WWII as a drama staged and overseen by four contrasting masters: Roosevelt, Churchill, Hitler, and Stalin. Each man had his own script for elaborately produced campaigns of deception, winning hearts and minds on the frontlines and the home front. Each leader used all the resources at his disposal to promote his own narrative of the Second World War. Brilliantly conceived oratory was applied to underscore each vision. Impression management—the art of political spin—was employed to drive the message home. Each side used uniforms and meticulously staged events, and broadcast their messages via all media available—motion pictures, radio broadcasts, songs, posters, leaflets, and beyond. The result of Lande’s exploration is “an illuminating, readable, and still very relevant account of the ways in which theatrical staging, dramatic storytelling, and message manipulation were key to the efforts of both sides during those turbulent years” (Richard Zoglin, senior editor, Time).

Paul Tillich, Ronald H. Stone (Editor), Matthew Lon Weaver (Editor)
Westminster John Knox Press, 1st ed., Louisville, Ky, Kentucky, 1998
Paul Tillich, one of the greatest Protestant theologians of modern times, wrote more than one hundred radio addresses that were braodcast into Nazi Germany from March 1942 through May 1944. The broadcasts were passionate and political--urging Germans to recognize the horror of Hitler and to reject a morally and spiritually bankrupt government. Laregly unknown in the United States, the broadcasts have been translated into English for the first time, and approximately half of them are presented in this book.

Radio London and resistance in occupied Europe : British political warfare, 1939-1943
Michael Stenton
OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2000
This book examines British attempts to wage political warfare in the countries occupied by Germany in the Second World War. It describes the slow construction of political warfare machinery in London in terms of two twin difficulties: Whitehall politics and fundamental doubts about what a successful war should have as its purpose. It then examines how political warfare operated as a semi-detached adjunct of diplomacy, and how it engaged with the development of armed or'active'resistance in France, Denmark, Poland, and Yugoslavia. This is a study of British political imagination in a period when Britain still acted as a great power in control of her own decisions. The experience of near-defeat, however, left decision-makers with dilemmas about rhetoric and ideology as much as policy.Their refusal to resolve these dilemmas until pushed by events meant political warfare lacked the consistency and definition that might have given it greater force.

British security coordination : the secret history of British intelligence in the Americas, 1940-1945
William Samuel Stephenson; Nigel West; Great Britain. British Security Coordination
Fromm International; Fromm Intl; Brand: Fromm Intl, 1st Fromm International ed., New York, New York State, 1999
In 1940 Winston Churchill dispatched a Canadian industrialist to New York with an extraordinary mission in a neutral country: to set up a secret spy network across both North and South America to cripple and confound Nazi propaganda and to fan the flames of pro-war sentiment. Sir William Stephenson (of A Man Called Intrepid fame) set up shop in Rockefeller Center to build a vast intelligence network-the <i>British Security Coordination</i>-the full story of which is now told for the first time. Operating on still-neutral soil, Stephenson's people soon launched an astonishing bagful of dirty tricks: they unmasked Axis spies, intercepted enemy communications, slipped beautiful female spies into the Vichy and Italian embassies in Washington, infiltrated labor unions, and spread British propaganda using U.S. radio stations and such prominent journalists as Walter Winchell and Drew Pearson. The complete report-commissioned at the end of the war and written by Roald Dahl and Gilbert Highet, among others-has been kept secret until now.

PublicAffairs, First U.S. edition, New York, 2019
The astonishing story of the British spies who set out to draw America into World War II As World War II raged into its second year, Britain sought a powerful ally to join its cause-but the American public was sharply divided on the subject. Canadian-born MI6 officer William Stephenson, with his knowledge and influence in North America, was chosen to change their minds by any means necessary. In this extraordinary tale of foreign influence on American shores, Henry Hemming shows how Stephenson came to New York--hiring Canadian staffers to keep his operations secret--and flooded the American market with propaganda supporting Franklin Roosevelt and decrying Nazism. His chief opponent was Charles Lindbergh, an insurgent populist who campaigned under the slogan "America First" and had no interest in the war. This set up a shadow duel between Lindbergh and Stephenson, each trying to turn public opinion his way, with the lives of millions potentially on the line.

To win the peace : British propaganda in the United States during World War II
Brewer, Susan A.
Cornell University Press, 2019 dec 31
<P>Between 1942 and 1945, the British government conducted a propaganda campaign in the United States to create popular consensus for a postwar Anglo-American partnership. Anticipating an Allied victory, British officials feared American cooperation would end with the war. Susan A. Brewer provides the first study of Britain's attempts to influence an American public skeptical of postwar international commitment, even as the United States was replacing Britain as the leading world power.</P><P>Brewer discusses the concerns and strategies of the British propagandists—journalists, professors, and businessmen—who collaborated with the generally sympathetic American media. She examines the narratives they used to link American and British interests on such controversial issues as the future of the empire and economic recovery. In analyzing the barriers to Britain's success, she considers the legacy of World War I, and the difficulty of conducting propaganda in a democracy. Propaganda did not prevent the transition of global leadership from the British Empire to the United States, Brewer asserts, but it did make that transition work in Britain's interest.</P>

The Third Reich: politics and propaganda
David Welch
London ; New York: Routledge, London, New York, New York State, 1993
The Appeal Of The Nazi Party Is One Of The Most Closely Studied Issues In European History. Its Remarkable Success Has Often Been Attributed To A Highly Successful Propaganda Machine: The Parades, Uniforms, Bands And Marches Which So Excited The German Public. Here, Professor Welch Contends That Although Propaganda Played An Important Part In Mobilising Support For The Nazis, Propaganda Alone Could Not Have Sustained The Nazi Party And Its Ideology Over Such A Long Period Of Time. His Argument Stems From A Belief That In Order To Be Successful, Propaganda Must Preach To The Partially Converted. The Book Arrives At A Number Of Controversial Conclusions About The Nature Of Nazi Propaganda And Its Effectiveness - As Well As Its Limitations. Writers And Historians On The Subject Have Generally Assumed That Nazi Propagandists Invariably Achieved Their Goals. By Examining Nazi Propaganda In The Light Of Wider Interpretative Questions About The Third Reich, Such As The Restructuring Of The Media, The Use Of Terror, The Need For Racial Purity And Hitler's 'charismatic' Leadership, Welch Challenges These Assumptions And Argues That In Many Ways Goebbels' Propaganda Machine Was A Failure. He Assesses Both The Theory And Practice Of Nazi Propaganda, As Well As The Reactions Of The German Public To The Major Themes And Campaigns Conducted By The State In Peacetime And At War And Questions Whether, Behind The Facade Of National Unity There Was Dissent: And, If So, Was It Rendered So Ineffective By Terror Alone? There Is Also A Document Section Which Evaluates The Speeches Of Adolf Hitler And Josef Goebbels, And The Laws That Shaped The Mass-media In The Third Reich. The Third Reich Explains The Popularity Of National Socialism By Examining The Roles Of Consent And Coercion In Sustaining The Regime. It Will Be Essential Reading For Students Of European History.--book Jacket. 1. The Conquest Of The Masses -- 2. Goebbels As Propagandist -- 3. Restructuring The Means Of Communication. Hitler's Englishman : the crime of "Lord Haw-Haw"
Selwyn, Francis
Routledge & Kegan Paul Books Ltd, Crimes of the century, Crimes of the century, London, England, 1987
Examines the career of William Joyce, the fascist agitator who broadcast anti-British propaganda from Nazi Germany during World War II. Argues that the evidence on which he was tried and hanged for treason in 1946 was dubious, since he was born in the USA, brought up in Ireland, and did not hold British citizenship. Emphasizes that his wartime activities on behalf of Germany were unimportant compared to his role as a fascist and antisemite during the 1930s. Attributes his extreme antisemitism to a knife wound received during the 1924 election campaign, which he blamed on a "Jewish communist" attacker. Discusses his influence in the British Union of Fascists, accepting the claim that Mosley was originally not antisemitic and adopted Joyce's anti-Jewish line after the disruption of BUF meetings by Jewish and communist opponents. In 1937 Joyce left the BUF and formed a National Socialist party which continued its violent propaganda up to the outbreak of war. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism)

Selling War : The British Propaganda Campaign Against American 'Neutrality' in World War II
Nicholas John Cull; Mazal Holocaust Collection
IRL Press at Oxford University Press, Oxford University Press USA, New York, 1995
"British propaganda brought America to the brink of war, and left it to the Japanese and Hitler to finish the job." So concludes Nicholas Cull in this absorbing study of how the United States was transformed from isolationism to belligerence in the years before the attack on Pearl Harbor. From the moment it realized that all was lost without American aid, the British Government employed a host of persuasive tactics to draw the US to its rescue. With the help of talents as varied as those of matinee idol Leslie Howard, Oxford philosopher Isaiah Berlin and society photographer Cecil Beaton, no section of America remained untouched and no method--from Secret Service intrigue to the publication of horrifying pictures of Nazi atrocities--remained untried. The British sought and won the support of key journalists and broadcasters, including Edward R. Murrow, Dorothy Thompson and Walter Winchell; Hollywood film makers also played a willing part. Cull details these and other propaganda activities, covering the entire range of the British effort. A fascinating story of how a foreign country provoked America's involvement in its greatest war, Selling War will appeal to all those interested in the modern cultural and political history of Britain and the United States.
