The Disciples in Narrative Perspective: The Portrayal and Function of the Matthean Disciples (Academia Biblica (Society of Biblical Literature) (Paper)) Jeannine K. Brown Atlanta, GA: Society of Biblical Literature, Academia Biblica (Series) (Society of Biblical Literature), no. 9, Atlanta, GA, ©2002
Do the disciples in Matthew really understand Jesus, his mission and his message? Although redaction approaches have typically answered this question affirmatively, a narrative reading of Matthew highlights the ways the disciples frequently misunderstand both what Jesus is called to do and what he intends for his own followers. This study offers such a narrative reading, arguing that not only do the disciples frequently fail to understand Jesus, they do not progress toward greater understanding as the story unfolds. The author explores the way that this portrayal functions in the story and in shaping Matthew's concept of discipleship. Paperback edition is available from the Society of Biblical Literature ((http://www.sbl-site.org) www.sbl-site.org ).

Knowing Kings : Knowledge, Power, and Narcissism in the Hebrew Bible (Semeia Studies (Paper).) Stuart Lasine; Society of Biblical Literature Atlanta, Ga.: Society of Biblical Literature, Society of Biblical Literature Semeia studies, 40, Atlanta, Ga, 2001
xv, 342 pages ; 23 cm "In Knowing Kings, biblical scholar and comparatist Stuart Lasine offers a unique study of kingship and biblical kings. Using methods derived from psychology, literary theory, and the social sciences, he demonstrates the crucial role played by information management in the maintenance and exercise of monarchical power, and explores the paradoxical nature of the king's position in the center of society Lasine's interdisciplinary approach includes illuminating interpretations of the biblical Saul, David, and Solomon, as well as the kingly figures Adam and Job. Among the non-biblical monarchs discussed are Ramesses II, Esarhaddon, Homer's Achilles, and Sophocles's King Oedipus. Lasine shows that the concept of narcissism provides a valuable tool for understanding the behavior of biblical kings, including the divine king and parent Yahweh Knowing Kings, painstakingly researched and carefully documented, is frequently surprising as Lasine employs a variety of inventive styles to keep the discussion lively and to sustain the reader's interest."--BOOK JACKET Includes bibliographical references (p. The labour of reading : desire, alienation and biblical interpretation, the essays in this volume are presented in honour of C. Culley at the time of his retirement Robert C. Culley, Fiona C. Black, Roland Boer, Erin Runions Atlanta, Ga.: Society of Biblical Literature, The Society of Biblical Literature Semeia studies, Semeia studies., Atlanta, Ga, Georgia, 1999
"The Labour of Reading provides an example of the work of reading biblical texts in new and distinct ways. Gathered to honor the scholarship and teaching of Robert Culley, these essays seek to carry on his legacy by exploring the edges of biblical scholarship. Covering both the Hebrew and Greek Bibles, they range through cultural and literary studies, philosophy, sociology, and feminism, among other disciplines. The unifying motif is the need to work hard at and labor with the text: the legacy of Robert Culley."--BOOK JACKET.

Images of the Word: Hollywood's Bible and Beyond (Society of Biblical Literature Semeia Studies) edited by David Shepherd Society of Biblical litterature, Society of Biblical Literature Semeia studies -- v. 54, Atlanta, Georgia, 2008
Images of the Word: Hollywood's Bible and Beyond is a collection of essays by leading international scholars in the field of Bible and film. Recognizing the increasingly global nature of both media and religion, the volume focuses on the ways in which the Bible is interpreted and visualized not only within Hollywood but also far beyond it. Cutting-edge analysis of films from France, Canada, Sweden, India, and elsewhere reveals that the Bible's visualization is rooted in culture and contributes to the shaping of culture, including a culture's perception of the Bible itself. Essays range across the canon from Exodus to Ecclesiastes to Revelation, sampling films of various national traditions and periods from Blackton's Life of Moses (1909) to Karunamayudu (1978) to Cronenberg's eXistenZ (1999). The volume engages the breadth of current scholarly interest in this interdisciplinary area, including the critical reading of Bible films, matters of methodology, and the exploration of biblical motifs and themes in contemporary cinema, and offers responses to the essays included from the perspectives of biblical studies and film studies.

Prophets and Prophecy in the Ancient Near East (Writings from the Ancient World) (Writings from the Ancient World) (Writings from the Ancient World) by Martti Nissinen with contributions by C.L. Seow and Robert K. Ritner; edited by Peter Machinist Society of Biblical Literature Brill, Writings from the ancient world -- no. 12, Atlanta, Georgia, 2003

Prophecy was a widespread phenomenon, not only in ancient Israel but in the ancient Near East as a whole. This is the first book to gather the available ancient Near Eastern, extrabiblical sources containing prophetic words or references to prophetic activities. Among the 140 texts included in this volume are oracles of prophets, personal letters, formal inscriptions, and administrative documents from ancient Mesopotamia and Levant from the second and first millennia BCE. Most of the texts come from Mari (eighteenth century BCE) and Assyria (seventh century BCE). In addition, the volume provides new translations of the relevant section of the Egyptian Report of Wenamon, by Robert K. Ritner, and of various texts from Syria-Palestine containing allusions to prophets and prophetic activities, by C. L. Seow. By collecting and presenting evidence of the activities of prophets and the phenomenon of prophecy from all over the ancient Near East, the volume illumines the cultural background of biblical prophecy and its parallels. It provides scholars of the history, religions, and cultural traditions of the ancient Near East with important information about different types and forms of transmission of divine words, and makes these valuable primary source materials accessible to students and general readers in contemporary English along with transcriptions of the original languages, indexes, and an extensive bibliography.

Paperback edition is available from the Society of Biblical Literature (www.sbl-site.org)

Studia Philonica Annual Xxii, 2010: 22 (studia Philonica Annual: Studies In Hellenistic Judaism) editors: David T. Runia, Gregory E. Sterling; associate editor: David Winston; book review editor: Ronald Cox Atlanta, Ga.: Society of Biblical Literature, Brown Judaic studies, SPA # II, Atlanta, 1991
The single most important source for Second Temple Jewish exegetical traditions is the three commentaries series written by Philo of Alexandria. Wanting to understand Second Temple Judaism more fully, a group of scholars founded the Philo Institute in 1971 to explore those traditions. The following year they began publication of The Studia Philonica as a venue for their research; however, the significance of Philo's work soon captured the interest of a broader group of scholars and quickly opened the journal's pages up to all aspects of Philonic studies. Six issues were released from 1972-1980 containing twenty-five articles, annual bibliographies, and abstracts of notable publications. The list of contributors is a who's who in Philonic studies in the 1970s and 1980s. After a lapse of almost a decade, the journal was revived as the Studia Philonica Annual, which is devoted to furthering the study of Hellenistic Judaism, in particular the writings and thought of the Hellenistic-Jewish writer Philo of Alexandria (ca. 15 b.c.e. to ca. 50 c.e.). Each year the Annual publishes the most current Philonic scholarship along with an extensive bibliography that is maintained by David Runia.

The riddles of Jesus in John : a study in tradition and folklore Thatcher, Tom, 1967- Atlanta, Ga.: Society of Biblical Literature, Monograph Series / Society of Biblical Literature, no. 53, Atlanta, Ga, ©2000
Thatcher contends that a large number of verses scattered throughout the dialogues of Jesus in the fourth gospel can be categorized as riddles. After explaining why biblical scholars have not recognized them before and describing the riddle as a speech genre, he surveys the riddles in general, then focuses on the dramatic and neck riddles, mission riddles, and salvation riddles. He indexes only modern authors. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Holy Lives, Holy Deaths: A Close Hearing Of Early Jewish Storytellers (studies In Biblical Literature) Antoinette Clark Wire Atlanta, GA: Society of Biblical Literature, Society of Biblical Literature monograph series -- no. 1, Atlanta, GA, Georgia, 2001

This volume guides the reader in listening to Early Jewish stories about holy figures which appear to have first been told between 150 B.C.E. and 150 C.E. Following new translations, the book provides a close hearing of the oral storytelling that generated these narratives now surviving only in literary form. Historical folklore must reconstruct storytelling performance from literary remains. Making use of contemporary folklore methods, the author examines the text, texture, and context of over one hundred stories, including birth prophecies, provision legends, prophetic stories of destruction or deliverance, and tales of martyrdom. A broad range of stories of these four types is presented in a way that reveals and illumines the oral patterns and characteristics of the storytellers. The stories are drawn from apocryphal and pseudepigraphical literature, Early Jewish historians, first-century Christian texts, and the Mishnah and early Talmudic writings. The Christian tradition is included here because it was generated within sectarian Judaism, and the first reports about Jesus appeared from Jewish storytellers. This work aims to shift the attention of biblical scholars and historians of religion away from an exclusive focus on the thought and art of writers or authors, and toward a wider recognition of the work of the storytellers, men and women alike, who generated the traditions that ultimately came to be preserved in written form.

Paperback edition is available from the Society of Biblical Literature (www.sbl-site.org)

Levison examines a brief tale written in Greek sometime before the fourth century, noting that it is perhaps the earliest known Jewish or Christian autobiographical narrative of a woman. After a general overview of the various text forms, he sets out the variants in parallel columns of Greek. He does not index the study. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
