A History of Pan-African Revolt (The Charles H. Kerr Library) C. L. R. James PM Press, 2012
Originally published in England in 1938 and expanded in 1969, this work remains the classic account of global Black resistance. This concise, accessible history of revolts by African peoples worldwide explores the wide range of methods used by Africans to resist oppression and the negative effects of imperialism and colonization as viewed in the 20th century. Written from a radical perspective with a substantial new introduction that contextualizes the work in the ferment of the times, A History of Pan-African Revolt is essential to understanding liberation movements in Africa and the diaspora and continues to reveal new insights, lessons, and visions to successive generations.

State Capitalism and World Revolution (The Charles H. Kerr Library) C. L. R. James, Raya Dunayevskaya, Grace Lee Boggs, Martin Glaberman, Paul Buhle Charles H. Kerr Library, The Charles H. Kerr library, 2013 ed, Oakland, CA, Chiacgo, IL, ©2013
Originally published in 1950, this analysis by three respected activists successfully predicted the future course of Marxism. Their revolutionary critique of industrial civilization possessed a striking originality that was insular in its political context and optimistic in its expectations for the working class. They envisioned that the working class activity would defy trends away from class and social issues and toward the so-called End of Ideology. Brought forth in a new edition, this viewpoint and others reveals much, even years later, that challenges Marxist and other orthodoxies. State Capitalism and World Revolution is the most succinct version of C.L.R. James and his collaborators general conclusions about industrial culture and is a pioneering critique of Lenin and Trotsky, and a reclamation of Marx. This edition includes the original preface from Martin Glaberman and a new introduction from Paul Buhle.;Front Cover; Title Page; Copyright Page; Contents; A Note to the 2013 edition by Paul Buhle; Fully and Absolutely Assured (C.L.R. James' Foreword to the 1986 Edition); Introduction to the Fourth Edition (1986) by Paul Buhle; Preface to the Third Edition (1968) by Martin Glaberman; Author's Preface to the Second Edition (1956); Authors' Introduction to the First Edition; I. Rebel Voices : An IWW Anthology Joyce L. Kornbluh, Charles H. Kerr Merlin Press; Merlin Press Limited, 2011, 1964
Originally published in 1964 and long out of print, Kornbluh's Rebel Voices remains by far the biggest and best source on Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) history, fiction, songs, art and lore. Besides the full text and illustrations of the original, this new and expanded edition includes 32 pages of additional material: a new introduction and updated bibliography by old-time Wobbly organizer and scholar Fred Thompson; an informative essay on Wobbly cartoons and cartoonists by Franklin Rosemont; more than 3 dozen additional cartoons and drawings and a useful index. 450 oversize pages crammed with the Wobblies in all their glory! [Not even the doughtiest of capitalism's defenders can read these pages without understanding how much glory and nobility there was in the IWW story, and how much shame for the nation that treated the Wobblies so shabbily." The flivver king : a story of Ford-America Upton Sinclair; Steve Meyer Charles H. Kerr Publications (Chicago), 50. anniversary ed., 2. print, Chicago, Ill, 1987
The Flivver King: A Story of Ford-America is a novel by Upton Sinclair, published in 1937, that tells the intertwined stories of Henry Ford & a fictional Ford worker Abner Shutt. On Bagley Street in the city of Detroit, Little Abner Shutt begins the story by explaining to his mother that "there's a feller down the street says he's goin' to make a wagon that'll run without a horse." That man of course is Henry Ford. The story follows the progress & growth of Ford Motor Company thru the perspective of a number of generations of a single family. "The Flivver King" demonstrates the effects of Scientific Management in factories. The Ford factory began with very skilled workers. Thru a process of breaking the skilled job down into simple steps, they were able to hire lower wage, less skilled individuals to do the work. The Flivver King explains how the Ford Company used scientific management to replace skilled workers while successfully increasing production. The 1st edition, published by the UAW states on the cover, that it was printed "in an edition of 200,000 copies for its members". The book was meant to provoke & challenge its readers.

Joe Hill: The IWW & The Making Of A Revolutionary Working Class Counterculture Rosemont, Franklin., Franklin Rosemont, Franklin Rosemont C.H. Kerr Pub.; Charles H Kerr; Brand: Charles H Kerr, 1st ed., Chicago, Ill, Illinois, 2003
A monumental work, expansive in scope, covering the life, times, and culture of that most famous of the Wobblies--songwriter, poet, hobo, thinker, humorist, martyr--Joe Hill. It is a journey into the Wobbly culture that made Hill and the capitalist culture that killed him. Many aspects of the life and lore of Joe Hill receive their first and only discussion in IWW historian Franklin Rosemont's opus. In great detail, the issues that Joe Hill raised and grappled with in his life: capitalism, white supremacy, gender, religion, wilderness, law, prison, and industrial unionism are shown in both the context of Hill's life and for their enduring relevance in the century since his death. Collected too is Joe Hill's art, plus scores of other images featuring Hill-inspired art by IWW illustrators from Ralph Chaplin to Carlos Cortez, as well as contributions from many other labor artists. As Rosemont suggests in this remarkable book, Joe Hill never really died. He lives in the minds of young (and old) rebels as long as his songs are sung, his ideas are circulated, and his political descendants keep fighting for a better day. -- taken from back cover.

Lucy Parsons : American revolutionary by Carolyn Ashbaugh Charles H. Kerr, published for the Illinois Labor History Society; Charles H. Kerr Publishing Company; Brand: Charles H. Kerr Publishing Company, 1st, First Edition, FR, 1976
Lucy Parsons was black, a woman, and working class-three reasons people are often excluded from history. Lucy herself pointed out the class bias of history in 1905 when she criticized historians who had written about "the course of wars, the outcome of battles, political changes, the rise and fall of dynasties and other similar movements, leaving the lives of those whose labor has built the world. . . in contemptuous silence." The problem of piecing together Lucy Parsons' life (1853-1942) from fragmentary evidence was more difficult than the usual problem of writing about a working class rebel, because the forces of "law and order" seized her personal papers at the time of her death. Even among histories by and about socialists, the work of women has been largely ignored. On the left, the view of Lucy Parsons as the tt devoted assistant" of her martyred husband Albert Richard Parsons is prevalent. Feminists who have forgotten the radical working class roots of the feminist movement have also overlooked Lucy Parsons. Editors of the Radcliffe Notable American Women three volume work consigned Lucy Parsons to their discard file on the grounds that she was "largely propelled by husband's fate" and was a pathetic figure, living in the past and crying injustice" after the Haymarket Police Riot.

Starving amidst too much : et other IWW writings on the food industry Peter J Rachleff; T-Bone Slim; L. S Chumley; Jim Seymour; Jack Sheridan; Industrial Workers of the World Charles H. Kerr (Chicago), Labor classics, 1st ed, Chicago, 2005
This is a book about the irrepressible conflict between the poorly paid workers who actually feed the world and the parasitical multi-billionaire corporate powers that make the rules and graba the profits. Reproduced here are rare classic documents on the "food question" by four old-time members of the IWW. T-Bone Slim provides a detailed critique of the industry - chockful of penetrating insight and knckout black humor. Organizer L S Chumley portrays the horrid living and working conditions of hotel and restaurant workers circa 1918, stressing the need for workers' direct actoin. Wobbly troubadour Jim Semour, with his inspired saga of "The Dishwasher" reflects on the possibilities of a radically different diet. Jack Sheridan's fascinating 1959 survey of the role of food in ancient and modern civilization, especially in economic development, is also a crash-course in the materialist conception of history at its Wobbly soapboxer best. In his introduction, historian/activist Peter Rachleff traces the history of the food-workers' self-organization, and brings the book up to date with a look at current point-of-production struggles to break the haughty power of an ecocidal agribusiness and the union-busting fast-food chains. Plus a foreword by Carlos Cortez.

The windmills of humanity : on culture and surrealism in the manipulated world Ivan Svitak; Joseph Grim Feinberg; Andy Lass Charles H. Kerr Publishing Company, Chicago, 2014
"The surrealists postulated that art should cease to be art, and they insisted that they were not artists and were not interested in art. According to their theory, the present phase of civilization (the phase of class societies) created the fundamental division between the human creator and the human user of art. Their great vision that art will be made by all was not (and is not) only a romantic illusion inherited from Hegel and the utopians. It is still a magnificent chal- lenge to the social conditionsboth then and nowwhich led to the separation of art and life..." Ivan Svitk, Surrealism and Art Philosopher and critic Ivan Svitk was among the leading Czech intellectuals during the lead-up to the Prague Spring of 1968, when tentative reforms by Communist Party leaders in Czechoslovakia sparked a mass movement for democratic socialism. By the time a Soviet-led invasion put an end to this movement and forced Svitk into exile, Svitk had influenced a generation of politicized youth with his works of Marxist humanist philosophy, social commentary, cultural critique, unconventional poetry, and satirical prose. This books editor, Joseph Grim Feinberg, is a social theorist at the Philosophy Institute of the Czech Republics Academy of Sciences andlike Svitkhas collaborated closely with surrealist groups in Chicago and Prague. Taking up Svitks own, largely-unrealized proposals for publication, Grim Feinberg has collected Svitks most provocative writing on aesthetic theory, interspersing it with a selection of Svitks poetry and creative prose. In the resulting volume, Svitk explores the possibility of a world in which art will be made by all, and he defends humanitys quixotic right to fight against old illusions so that new illusions might be born.

Praise Boss!: The Erotic Adventures of Mr. Block or Labor's Love's Lost, a Proletarian Sex Tragicomedy in Five Acts Written for the Disconcerting Diversion of the Rich and the Serious Edification of the Rabble, for Performance on Stages and in Closets Everywhere Feinberg, Joseph Grim Kerr Publishing Company, Charles H.; Charles H Kerr, Chicago, Illinois, 2022
pages cm "Some people are born by mistake, some become mistakes, and some have mistakes thrust upon them. With Mr. Block, it's a little of all three. Made infamous by Joe Hill's eponymous song and Ernest Riebe's cartoons, Mr. Block has written himself into labor history as the working class's biggest blockhead. Why? Because he believes that the wage system is basically good and the bosses have his best interests at heart. At any rate it's true that his heart is full of the bosses' best interests. Even when he's hit rock bottom he still thinks that if he works just a little harder he can finally make it to the top. And if hard work doesn't work, then why not take inspiration from the bosses themselves and try making it some other way? In this new play, Mr. Block believes a slanderous rumor, which gives him the absurd idea that the way to a boss's heart is through her heart. Will Block's hardheaded attempts to woo her ever get him into her good graces, or even into her bad ones? Will he have any love left over for his fellow workers? Find out in Praise Boss!"--

<br> History. African Studies. In the Introduction, Robin D. G. Kelly comments, A HISTORY OF PAN-AFRICAN REVOLT is one of those rare books that continues to strike a chord of urgency, even half a century after it was first published. Time and again, its lessons have proven to be valuable and relevant for understanding liberation movements in Africa and the diaspora. Each generation who has had the opportunity to read this small book finds new insights, new lessons, new vision for their own age....-- This new edition of James' classic, originally published in England in 1938, brings a work that previously enjoyed underground popularity to a much wider audience.

Ethics and the materialist conception of history.: By Karl Kautsky. Translated by John B. Askew Kautsky, Karl, 1854-1938 Charles H. Kerr, 3rd ed., rev., Chicago, Illinois, 1909
Translated by John B. Askew Like so many other Marxist publications the present one owes its origin to a special occasion, it arose out of a controversy. The polemic in which I was involved last Autumn with the editors of Vorwarts brought me to touch on the question of their " ethical tendencies." What I said, however, on this point was so often misunderstood by one side, and on the other brought me so many requests to give a more thorough and systematic exposition of my ideas on Ethics, that I felt constrained to attempt at least to give a short sketch of the development of Ethics on the basis of the materialist conception of history. I take as my starting point, consequently, that materialist philosophy which was founded on one side by Marx and Engels, on the other, though in the same spirit, by Joseph Dietzgen. For the results at which I have arrived I alone am responsible.

lgli/George Plechanoff - Anarchism and Socialism (1895, Charles H. Kerr & Company).pdf
Anarchism and Socialism George Plechanoff Charles H. Kerr & Company, 1895
A concise, witty and sharp-tongued critique; this pamphlet, written in Russian and translated by Marx's daughter - Eleanor Marx Aveling - concerns itself with refuting the notion that anarchism is an advance on Marxist "scientific" socialism.Within the pages of this work, George Plechanoff shows not only the counter-revolutionary character of anarchism, but he exposes its class bias and its empty philosophic idealism and vacuous utopian program. He exposes anarchism to be just the opposite of scientific socialism or communism. It aims at a society dominated by individualism, which most essentially a capitalist ideal. Such ideals as "liberty," "equality," "fraternity," first sprang from the ranks of the petty property owners of early capitalism, as Plechanoff shows. He also points out that while Proudhon is usually credited with being "the father of anarchism" that actually Max Stirner comes closer to being its "father." Stirner's "League of Egoists," he says, "is only the utopia of a petty-bourgeois in revolt. In this sense, one may say he has spoken the last word of bourgeois individualism.""As to the book itself. There are those who think that the precious time of so remarkable a writer, and profound a thinker as George Plechanoff is simply wasted in pricking Anarchist wind-bags. But, unfortunately, there are many of the younger, or of the more ignorant sort, who are inclined to take words for deeds, high-sounding phrases for acts, mere sound and fury for revolutionary activity, and who are too young or too ignorant to know that such sound and fury signify nothing. It is for the sake of these younger, or for the sake of the more ignorant, folk, that men like Plechanoff deal seriously with this matter of Anarchism, and do not feel their time lost if they can, as this work must, help readers to see the true meaning of what is called Anarchism." - Eleanor Marx Aveling

State Capitalism and World Revolution (The Charles H. Kerr Library) C. L. R. James, Raya Dunayevskaya, Grace Lee Boggs, Martin Glaberman, Paul Buhle Charles H. Kerr Library, The Charles H. Kerr library, Oakland, Calif, 2013
60 years ago, CLR James and a small circle of collaborators set forth a revolutionary critique of industrial civilisation. So insular was the political context that the documents of the signal effort never reached public view. Happily, times have changed. Readers have discovered much, even after all these years, to challenge Marxist (or any other) orthodoxy. They will never find a more succinct version of James' general conclusions than State Capitalism and World Revolution. In this slim volume, James and his comrades successfully predict the future course of Marxism.

The Golden Book Of Springfield (Lost Utopias Series) Vachel Lindsay; introduction by Ron Sakolsky Charles H. Kerr Publishing Company, Lost utopias series, Chicago, Illinois, 1999
Fiction. Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) was the most intensely romantic U.S. poet of his generation, a Prairie State populist called by Harriet Monroe of Poetry the most gifted and original poet we have ever printed. In this radically nonconformist dream of the future, the coffee houses, movie theatres, streets and parks of Springfield in the Mystic Year 2018 is the setting for a valient struggle to transform a village dominated by shady politicians, lynch mobs, commercialism and cocaine into a new paradise. THE GOLDEN BOOK offers no blueprint, but rather a poet's possibilities dreamed at the cross streets of vision.

1 online resource (120 pages), The pamphlets reprinted in this collection were first published in the 1910s amidst great controversy; the significant works included are \"Direct Action and Sabotage\" by William E. Trautmann, \"Sabotage: Its History, Philosophy and Function\" by Walker C. Smith, and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn's \"Sabotage: The Conscious Withdrawal of the Workers' Industrial Efficiency.\" Even then, the tactics of direct action and sabotage were often associated with the clandestine activity of a militant minority or the desperate acts of the unorganized. The activist authors of the texts in this collection challenged the prevailing stereotypes. As they point out, the practice of direct action, and of sabotage, have been an integral part of the everyday work life of wage-earners in all times and places; direct action is recognized as a valuable and effective tactic by many movements around the globe, and remains a cutting edge tool for social change, Print version record, Direct action and sabotage (1912) / William E. The right to be lazy Lafargue, Paul, 1842-1911; Kerr, Charles H., b. 1860 Chicago : C.H. Kerr, New ed., Chicago, Illinois, 1975
The Right to be Lazy is an essay by Cuban-born French revolutionary Marxist Paul Lafargue, written from his London exile in 1880. The essay polemicizes heavily against then-contemporary liberal, conservative, Christian and even socialist ideas of work. Lafargue criticizes these ideas from a Marxist perspective as dogmatic and ultimately false by portraying the degeneration and enslavement of human existence when being subsumed under the primacy of the "right to work", and argues that laziness, combined with human creativity, is an important source of human progress. He manifests that "When, in our civilized Europe, we would find a trace of the native beauty of man, we must go seek it in the nations where economic prejudices have not yet uprooted the hatred of work ... The Greeks in their era of greatness had only contempt for work: their slaves alone were permitted to labor: the free man knew only exercises for the body and mind ... The philosophers of antiquity taught contempt for work, that degradation of the free man, the poets sang of idleness, that gift from the Gods." And so he says "Proletarians, brutalized by the dogma of work, listen to the voice of these philosophers, which has been concealed from you with jealous care: A citizen who gives his labor for money degrades himself to the rank of slaves." (The last sentence paraphrasing Cicero.)

Lucy Parsons : American revolutionary by Carolyn Ashbaugh Charles H. Kerr, published for the Illinois Labor History Society; Charles H. Kerr Publishing Company; Brand: Charles H. Kerr Publishing Company, 1st, First Edition, FR, 1976
Lucy Parsons life energy was directed toward freeing the working class from capitalism. She attributed the inferior position of women and minority racial groups in American society to class inequalities and argued, as Eugene Debs later did, that blacks were oppressed because they were poor, not because they were black. Lucy favored the availability of birth control information and contraceptive devices. She believed that under socialism women would have the right to divorce and remarry without economic, political and religious constraints; that women would have the right to limit the number of children they would have; and that women would have the right to prevent legalized rape in marriage.Lucy Parsons life expressed the anger of the unemployed workers, women, and minorities against oppression and is exemplary of radicals efforts to organize the working class for social change. From the prefaceLucy Parsons, who the Chicago police considered more dangerous than a thousand rioters, was an early American radical who defied all the conventions of her turbulent era as an outspoken woman of color, writer, and labor organizer. Parsons life as activist spanned the era of the Robber Barons through the Great Depression, during which she actively campaigned and organized for the emancipation of the working class from wage slavery. Parsons courageously led the defense campaign for the Haymarket martyrs, including her husband Albert Parsons. Ashbaughs biography takes a giant leap toward reinterpreting the role of women in American history.

We will return in the whirlwind : Black radical organizations 1960-1975 Muhammad Ahmad, Maxwell Stanford Jr. Charles H. Kerr Publishing Company, 1st ed, Chicago, 2007
Dr. Muhammad Ahmad was national field chairman of the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM) during the mid-60s and founder of the African People s Party in the 1970s. He has worked closely with Malcolm X, Jesse Gray, Amiri Baraka, Stokely Carmichael, James and Grace Lee Boggs, James Forman, Robert and Mabel Williams, and Queen Mother Audley Moore, among others, in founding and carrying out various Black liberation projects and organizations. Who better, then, to pen a major assessment of some of the most important Black radical organizations of the 60s? Here is a study of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Black Panther Party (BPP), the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), and the League of Revolutionary Black Workers (LRBW), that only he could have done. Review “Drawing upon his extensive network of personal and political contacts and his unique understanding of the connections between persons, organizations, and events (too often viewed in isolation), Ahmad has made a significant contribution toward deepening our understanding of a period whose complexities might otherwise be lost to future generations.” --John Bracey

Cultural Writing. "More dangerous than a thousand rioters!" That's what the Chicago police called Lucy Parsons--America's most defiant and persistent anarchist agitator, whose cross-country speaking tours inspired hundreds of thousands of working people. Her friends and admirers included William Morris, Peter Kropotkin, "Big Bill" Haywood, Ben Reitman, and Sam Dolgoff. And the groups in which she was active were just as varied: the Knights of Labor, IWW, Dil Pickle Club, International Labor Defense, and others. Here for the first time is a hefty selection of her powerful writings and speeches: on anarchism, women, race matters, class war, the IWW, and the U.S. injustice system. "Lucy Parsons's writings are among the best and strongest in the history of U.S. anarchism"--Gale Ahrens.

Modern Politics (The Charles H. Kerr Library) Ignatiev, Noel; James, Cyril Lionel Robert C.H. Kerr Publ. Co., PM Press, The Charles H. Kerr Library, 2013
Back in print for the first time in 30 years, this volume provides a brilliant and accessible summation of the ideas of left Marxist giant C. L. R. James. Originally delivered in 1960 as a series of lectures in his native Trinidad, James’s wide-ranging erudition and enduring relevance are powerfully displayed. From his analysis of revolutionary history and the role of literature, art, and culture in society to an interrogation of the ideas and philosophy of such thinkers as Rousseau, Lenin, and Trotsky, this is a magnificent tour de force from a critically engaged thinker at the height of his powers. Still relevant to politics today and an essential introduction to an important body of work, the ideas of C. L. R. James remain as necessary and illuminating for this century as they have for the last
