Five Gentlemen of Japan: The Portrait of a Nation's Character (D'Asia Vu Reprint Library) (D'asia Vu Reprint Library (Series).) Frank Gibney; Pacific Basin Institute EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, D'Asia vu reprint library, D'Asia vu reprint library (Series), Norwalk, Conn, Connecticut, 2002
This classic account (1952) of the makers of "New Japan" tells the life stories of a journalist, an ex-Navy vice-admiral, a steel worker, a farmer, and Emperor Hirohito. Frank Gibney was a wartime U.S. Navy intelligence officer who became Time magazine correspondent during the American Occupation of Japan. He went on to be a major interpreter of Japan to Americans and America to Japanese, known as a knowledgeable, genial presence in the PBS series Pacific Century . In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Japan was a poor, broken, and troubled society. Many in both Japan and the West assumed that it would always be so. But Gibney reported on Japan in such telling and readable detail that we can see in this book both the now forgotten atmosphere of that time and the basis for the "Japanese miracle" to follow.

Local Politics In Rural Taiwan Under Dictatorship And Democracy J. Bruce Jacobs EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, Norwalk, CT, Connecticut, 2008
TAIWAN IS UNDERGOING SIGNIFICANT CHANGE in its identity and its culture. The last twenty years have seen Taiwanese culture diverge sharply from Chinese culture. Local Politics in Rural Taiwan under Dictatorship and Democracy brings together some thirty-five years of field research in one rural Taiwanese township. The first field study took place in 1971-1973 with annual follow up studies from 1976-80. These studies were reported in a limited edition by the Australian National University as Local Politics in a Rural Chinese Cultural A Field Study of Mazu Township, Taiwan . The present edition updates and extends the original study through 2006. Over these years Taiwan's political system has undergone many changes. Taiwanese now have reached the highest summits of government previously reserved only for Mainlanders. Similarly, up and down the party and governmental hierarchies, Taiwanese have risen to positions of leadership and the Nationalist Party no longer dominates the country. Clearly much of Mazu Township has transformed but not every aspect at an even rate. Most dramatically, and ironically, as Taiwan has democratized, guanxi have become less important in both politics and business. One important influence of this book will be on standard Asian Studies methodology. The analysis of factions, based on empirical field research, rejects the use of patron-client models in Taiwanese and, indeed, in Chinese contexts. Mazu factions have group leaderships and important horizontal and vertical ties. To ignore these deep-seated inter-group and extra-group relationships as does the patron-client model would completely distort and misrepresent Taiwan's factional structures. Local Politics in Rural Taiwan under Dictatorship and Democracy demonstrates why the patron-client model is inappropriate to analysis in Chinese and Taiwanese settings.

My First Revolution (Signature Books (White Plains, N.Y.).) Winthrop Knowlton EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, Signature books (White Plains, N.Y.), White Plains, NY, ©2001
In the summer of 1948, Winthrop Knowlton and his friend, James C. Thomson, Jr., just graduated from prep school, set out for China. During the next nine months they would travel throughout revolution-torn China as Mao Tse-tung's Communist forces moved ever southward fighting Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist armies in their retreat to Formosa. Separated by the war, they rejoined in South China and continued their journey -- their revolution around the world -- by freighter to a Europe still reeling from World War II, and across the Atlantic back home. Knowlton's memoir tells a magnificent story of that remarkable time. The story closes with Knowlton's return to China in 1979 at the head of an American publishing delegation, a retrospective look at the events of 1948-49 giving the book still another historical and human dimension.

Oil for the Lamps of China (D'Asia Vu Reprint Library (Series).) Alice Tisdale Hobart; introduction to the 2002 edition by Sherman Cochrane EastBridge; Brand: Pacific Century Pr; EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation; Pacific Century Pr, D'Asia vu reprint library, D'Asia vu reprint library (Series), White Plains, N.Y, New York State, 2002
Oil for the Lamps of China (1934) was a best-selling novel when it was first published, just a few years after Pearl Bucks The Good Earth (1931). The hero of the story is a keen, young American businessman who wants to bring "light" and progress to China in the form of oil and oil lamps, but who is caught between Chinese revolutionary nationalism in the 1920s and the heartless American corporation which has built his career. The title became a catch phrase for expansive American dreams of the vast China market even though the novel itself, written at the beginning of the Great Depression, was skeptical of large business and any supposed American ability to "improve" China. The author presents a clear portrait of Western idealism versus Eastern pragmatism in the doubly exotic setting of Mainland China before the advent of large-scale industrialization. The portrayal is unflattering to both sides. While some might now regard the more sympathetic treatment of the young American as out of date, others would counter that the picture is both historically and contextually accurate. "Now, nearly seventy years since it was originally published, . . . Oil for the Lamps of China again seems timely. Once again ambitious young Americans like Stephen Chase are working for big corporations in China. . . . Once again sensitive young spouses like Hester are coping with the rigors of living simultaneously in American corporate culture and Chinese culture. . . . As these parallels suggest, if Oil for the Lamps of China was timely in the 1930s, then it also seems timely today." from the Introduction by Sherman Cochran

The Korean presidents - Leadership for nation building Choong Nam Kim EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, Signature books (White Plains, N.Y.), Norwalk, Conn, ©2007
Dr. Choong Nam Kim has written an important and penetrating study of the Korean presidents from Syngman Rhee to Roh Moo Hyun in the context of their eras. His analysis of their influence and leadership styles is required reading in the continuing reassessment of their respective roles in the remarkable changes and development of politics and economics in the Republic of Korea. This will no doubt be a controversial study in some circles, for it provides an alternative approach to some contemporary scholarship, but it will contribute both to the rise of scholarly concern and popular interest in understanding the varied roles of Korean presidents in critical periods in modern Korean history. This volume is a highly relevant and singular contribution to the literature on the peregrinations of the Republic since its founding. David I. Steinberg Director, Asian Studies Program School of Foreign Service Georgetown University

Stone Mirror: Reflections On Contemporary Korea (signature Books) David I. Steinberg EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, Signature books, Signature books (White Plains, N.Y.), Norwalk, CT, Connecticut, 2002
The transformation of the Republic of Korea from an impoverished state to a leading industrialized nation has been spectacular, but it has also masked the continuities of Korean society and culture. For more than four decades, David I. Steinberg has been observing Korea and is uniquely qualified to write on the evolution of modern Korea. As the resident representative of The Asia Foundation in 196368 and then again in 199498, he has been a participant in and close observer of the Korean scene. His trenchant comments on a broad spectrum of Korean life and mores illuminate many aspects of Korean society most often ignored in both the academic and popular literature. The short essays selected for this volume come from the over 230 columns he has published in the Korea Times since 1995. They present a series of vignettes on the cultural, socioeconomic, and political life of Korea today. Trained first in Chinese studies and then in Southeast Asian history, Steinberg has lived in a variety of Asian countries over the past 17 years. He brings to this book a comparative focus that provides deeper perspective on Korean affairs. Because he personally experienced Korea at both an early stage of its growth and a much later period, he is able to report changes in the society in a manner that few other foreigners have been able to do.

Everlasting Empire In-hwa Yi; Richard C. Holbrooke; Desaix Anderson; Young-nan Yu; Yi In-Hwa EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, Signature books (White Plains, N.Y.), White Plains, New York, 2002
Winner of the 2002 Daesan Foundation prize for Outstanding Literature in Translation. Everlasting Empire (Yongwonhan chekuk) is a Korean historical novel written as a mystery story. The narrator frames the main story with his "discovery" of a 150-year-old manuscript. Because of problems verifying the authenticity of the original writer, the narrator offers the book not as genuine history but as a story. The narrative opens on a winter morning in 1800 with the discovery that the Royal Book Examiner has died in the night while working alone on a secret project for the Korean king. His death sets in motion a series of events revealing the contours of philosophical and political conflict among the literati in the royal court. Set at a pivotal moment in Korean history, when the nations last strong king was attempting to consolidate the authority of the monarchy against the dangerous encumbrance of bureaucratic factional infighting, and when Western ideas were beginning to infiltrate Korea, Everlasting Empire is not only an exciting and informative novel but offers genuine insight into the history and culture of late eighteenth-early nineteenth century Korea. The original Korean edition was published in 1993 and was a bestseller in Korea, selling more than one million copies. In was translated into French and published by Maisonneuve & Larose in 2000 and was made into a film in Korean which collected six prestigious Grand Bell Awards. " Yi In-hwa has achieved a goal that eludes most authors of historical fiction: He has created a tale so plausible that it can almost pass for the work of a historian rather than a novelist. This novel opens a window into the turbulent world of Chosen dynasty politics, in which political disagreements often had deadly consequences. Yi In-hwa has captured the rivalries, cruelty, and treachery on Chongjos Seoul with a vividness equaled by few historical records, or even historians reconstructions. I recommend Everlasting Empire to anyone who wants to experience political intrigue on the Korean peninsula two centuries ago." -From the Introduction by Don Baker

The Cry Of The Harp: Selected Works Of Choe Chung-hui Selected Works Of Choe Chung-hui Short Stories. Selections. English Ch'oe, Chŏng-hŭi , 1912- EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, Signature books (White Plains, N.Y.), 1st Eng. ed, Norwalk, CT, ©2005
The works of Choe Chung-hui gathered in this book cover a period of 40 years of momentous change in Korea. Ms. Choe was born in 1906 as Korea was evolving from a nation governed and ruled by Confucian precepts to a nation that had recently opened its door to the influence of the West. Traditional Korean literature was greatly influenced by China, with few works attributable to women writers. Choe began writing when the literary climate was in flux, beginning to adapt to Western influences. These stories give the reader a vivid inside view of ordinary people living amid upheaval and vast societal changes. Here are spare pictures of lives lived according to the mores of the past even as society itself was rapidly changing. Identifying with those who lived out their lives trapped in poverty and hopelessness, Choe depicts women who are often frustrated and stymied by the paternalism of the men in their lives, yet are unable to do anything about it. Two of the stories depict older women who are mired in the past and find it impossible to adjust to the mores of the young. The personal memoir in this collection, "The Cry of the Harp," depicts the experiences of Choe and her family from the early 1940s until their return to Seoul after the Korean War. Her story puts a human face on the history of war. It is especially poignant when she describes her poet husband, accused of cooperation with the North, as he leaves home in order to protect his family. Choe never sees him again and must flee Seoul with her daughters to refuge in Taegu until war's end. That she persisted to write despite the tragedies that plagued most of her life is a tribute to Choe Chung-hui's resilience and character; and it is all here in her stories and memoir.

Living Dangerously in Korea: The Western Experience, 1900-1950 (The Missionary Enterprise in Asia) Clark, Donald N. EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, The missionary enterprise in Asia, Norwalk, CT, Connecticut, 2003
Korea was "discovered" by the West after World War II when it became a flashpoint in the Cold War. Before the war, however, it was home to many hundreds of Westerners who experienced life there under Japanese colonial rule. These included missionaries who opened Korea as a field for evangelism, education, and medicine; speculators who risked much and reaped riches from mining concessions; and diplomats who tried to keep them neutral, even as the Japanese forced them out of business on the eve of the Pacific War. In the first part of the book, the author reconstructs the foreign community and highlights the role of Americans in particular as participants in Korean history, bringing vividly to life the lives and suffering and triumphs of the expatriate community in Korea, especially the missionaries. In the second part of the book, the author presents the altered circumstances of American military occupation after 1945 and the consequences of the Americans assuming a role not unlike the one that had been played earlier by the colonial Japanese. By telling the lives and experiences of Westerners, the author highlights the major historical events of modern Korean history. Accounts of foreigners in the Independence Movement and during the period of militarization in the 1930s shed new light on what Japanese colonial rule meant to the Korean people. Similarly, Western experiences in Korea in the 1940s amount to a commentary on the way Korea was divided and the events that led inexorably to the ordeal of the Korean War. The stories recounted in this extraordinary book, highlighted by more than sixty photographs, are a valuable commentary on Koreas early modernization and the consequences of the Korean War as it set the stage for Koreas relations with the world in the late twentieth century.

China's water crisis =: Zhongguo shui weiji Ma Jun; translated by Nancy Yang Liu and Lawrence R. Sullivan EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, Voices of Asia, Norwalk, CT, United States, 2004
An International Rivers Network Book translated by Nancy Yang Lui and Lawrence R. Sullivan Chinas Water Crisis ( Zhongguo shui weiji ) is the most comprehensive, authoritative, and up-to-date-source of information on the enormous water resource crisis confronting the Peoples Republic of China. The author describes in great detail the floods, water scarcity, and pollution problems existing in all seven of Chinas major drainage basinslarge and smalland proposes workable solutions for sustainable management. Of greatest concern to Mr. Ma is the condition of Chinas two major rivers, the Yellow and the Yangzi. The very existence of the Yellow River is threatened by massive reductions in water flow caused by a variety of man-made programs while chronic soil erosion resulting from defor-estation together with dam construction has led to a cycle of flood and drought in the Yangzi River basin. The same issues are reflected in Chinas smaller rivers. Mr. Ma documents the persistent drought conditions in the southeast, the impact of pollutants on the Tibetan plateau, the defects in Chinas large-scale reservoirs, steadily diminishing underground water tables, and the growing abuse of aquifers for urbanization and industrialization. Despite his alarming findings, Mr. Ma feels that there is hope if major remedial programs are put in place very soon. Otherwise, he paints a compelling picture of a nation which will experienceover the next several decadesdramatic deterioration in its clean water.

Chinese characteristics : by Arthur H. Smith; introduction to the 2003 edition by Lydia Liu, University of Michigan EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, D'Asia vu reprint library (Series), 2003 ed, White Plains, N.Y, 2003
Chinese Characteristics (1894) was the most widely read American work on China until Pearl Bucks The Good Earth (1931). It was the first to take up the task of analyzing Chinese society in the light of scientific social and racial theory. Written as a series of pungent and sometimes comic essays for a Shanghai newspaper in the late 1880s, Chinese Characteristics was among the five most read books on China among foreigners living in China as late as World War I and it was read by Americans at home as a wise and authentic handbook. The book was quickly translated into Japanese and just as quickly into Chinese. It was accepted by the Chinese and has maintained its authoritative status for over a century as the quintessential portrait of the Chinese race drawn by a Westerner. Indeed, the Chinese edition(s) of Chinese Characteristics have never gone out of print in China. Lu Xun, the most prominent Chinese cultural critic of the early twentieth century, urged his students to study and ponder Smiths message, which was very widely debated in Chinese student circles. Within the last decade (the 1990s), two different, new translations of Smiths book were published in China and both editions have enjoyed wide distribution and readership. In the West, particularly since World War II, Chinese Characteristics has been widely quoted (though seldom read) as an example of Sino-myopia and Orientalism. Despite such Western pseudo-intellectual bias, Smiths arguments retain the power to provoke critical introspection among Chinese and, for the honest, among Westerners as well.

Mystic Synthesis In Java: A History Of Islamization From The Fourteenth To The Early Nineteenth Centuries (signature Books Series) Merle Calvin Ricklefs Eastbridge, A Nonprofit Corporation, Signature books, Signature books (White Plains, N.Y.), 1st ed., Norwalk, Connecticut, 2006
This book analyzes the Islamization of the Javanese, the largest ethnic group in Indonesia, which is the nation with the largest Muslim population in the world. Java represents an important case study in Islam's spread from the Middle East to the far reaches of the globe. This process gave rise to contested senses of identity: What did it mean to be both Javanese and Muslim? For some Javanese, Hindu-Bhuddism and Islam were probably alternative, not mutually exclusive, sources of supernatural power. For others, cultural boundaries were clear and one must choose between being Javanese or Muslim. The greatest of these identities were reconciled in the early seventeenth century by the greatest of Java's kings, Sultan Agung. But his successors were less comfortable with this reconciliation and thus found themselves opposed by committed Muslims. These successor kings turned to the Dutch East India Company for support, alliance with Christians further feeding rebellion. Not until a century after Agung died was Islam and the court aristocracy - the epitome of what it meant to be Javanese - again reconciled. The result was a society deeply committed to Islam, observant of its ritual life, but admitting indigenous, non-Islamic, spiritual forces to the faith. This, after 400 years, is the "mystic synthesis" of this book's title. Mobilizing Javanese, Dutch, and other sources, Professor Ricklefs presents a book that should be read by anyone interested in the history of Islam, of Indonesia, or, as he puts it - of "societies that move across what we think of as boundaries" - for they take us closer to the question of what we are as human beings.

Through the Dragon's Mouth: Journeys into the Yangzi's Three Gorges (Missionary Enterprise in Asia) Ben Thomson Cowles EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, Missionary enterprise in Asia series, 2nd ed, White Plains, N.Y., Abingdon, 2004
Few places on earth match the splendor of the Yangzi River's Three Gorges. This 150-mile stretch of shoals and chasms has inspired millennia of poets, princes and paupers. As a young man, Cowles was spellbound by tales of danger and daring from those who had ventured into the famed "Dragon's Mouth." In 1946, just prior to the Communist takeover, Cowles, along with a Chinese professor and an Army pilot-engineer, set out to experience the gorges firsthand. For 19 days they immersed themselves in the life of the river, along side 65 crewmen aboard a 95-foot junk. Along the way they encountered bandits, sages, revolutionaries and death, and, ultimately, a sense of meaningfulness that has accompanied them during the ensuing decades. The grandeur and depth are made all the more poignant when juxtaposed against his return in the 1980s, this time aboard a luxury liner. Gone are lice-ridden bedrolls and horrific near-misses with whirlpools, but gone, too is a head-on collision with the sublime and unforgiving forces of nature that first attracted Cowles. With the completion, in 2009, of a mega dam the gorges will be subjugated completely and irrevocably lost.

Southerners, Northerners: A Novel (Signature Books (White Plains, N.Y.).) by Lee Ho-chul; translated from the Korean by Andrew Killick and Cho Sukyeon EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, Signature books, Signature books (White Plains, N.Y.), 1st English ed., Norwalk, CT, Connecticut, 2004
Translated in close consultation with the author by Andrew Peter Killick and Sukyeon Cho. Shortly after the outbreak of the Korean War, when he was eighteen, Lee Ho-Chul was drafted into the North Korean army. Southerners, Northerners (Namny k saram pungny k saram) is a fictionalized account of his inglorious yet dramatic experiences as a raw recruit and, soon afterward, as a prisoner of war. Beginning with some fascinating vignettes of North Korean high school life and ending with a narrow escape from death, the story offers a unique perspective on the early phases of the war and its everyday realities, from the tragic to the farcical. But Southerners, Northerners is far more than a war memoir. The authors encounters with men from South Korea, first as volunteers in the North Korean army and later as military police and guards, provoke a searching examination of the difference in ethos that had already emerged between the two Koreas. Moreover, the events of the story constantly spark flashbacks and foreshadowings that stretch from the authors childhood in what was then a Japanese colony to his later years as a dissident in South Korea. This gives the novel a rich texture of association in which the wartime story becomes a focal point for a broad vision of North and South Korea through half a century of history. Ultimately, one mans experience becomes a prism through which are refracted the international forces that have made the Korean peninsula today almost the last outpost of the Cold War. While this and other works of Lee Ho-Chul have been translated into many languages, this is the first time a complete novel by this major figure in contemporary Korean literature has been published in English. The novel won the prestigious Daesan Literary Award for Fiction when it was published in 1996.

20 th century Korean Literature (Signature Books) Lee Namho ... [et al.]; translated by Youngju Ryu; edited by Brother Anthony, of Taizé EastBridge, a nonprofit corporation, Signature books, Signature books (White Plains, N.Y.), Norwalk, CT, Connecticut, 2005
This short volume offers essential information and a basic framework for understanding twentieth-century Korean literature. Growing out of a continuous tradition of over 2,000 years, twentieth-century Korean literature, termed "modern Korean Literature" by Korean scholars, has been shaped by profound social and political transformations on the peninsula. Those decades of great suffering and change gave birth to poets and writers of broad vision and to works of literature that testify both to actual Korean experience within this history and to the Korean spirit of resistance and transcendence. It is this literature that offers the most concrete and abundant knowledge and intuition of the sensibilities and habits of thought and the moral values and aesthetic views that guided the lives of Koreans in the twentieth century.
