Between Allah & Jesus Kreeft, Peter. Inter-Varsity Press, 2010
What would happen if Christians and a Muslim at a university talked and disagreed, but really tried to understand each other? What would they learn? That is the intriguing question Peter Kreeft seeks to answer in these imaginative conversations at Boston College. An articulate and engaging Muslim student named 'Isa challenges the Christian students and professors he meets on issues ranging from prayer and worship to evolution and abortion, from war and politics to the nature of spiritual struggle and spiritual submission.

Back to virtue : traditional moral wisdom for modern moral confusion Kreeft, Peter [Kreeft, Peter] Ignatius Press, Morality, Paperback, 1992
"We have reduced all virtues to one: being nice. And, we measure Jesus by our standard instead of measuring our standard by Him." For the Christian, explains author Peter Kreeft, being virtuous is not a means to the end of pleasure, comfort and happiness. Virtue, he reminds us, is a word that means "manly strength." But how do we know when we are being meek—or just cowardly? When is our anger righteous—and when is it a sin? What is the difference between being virtuous—and merely ethical? Back to Virtue clears up these and countless other questions that beset Christians today. Kreeft not only summarizes scriptural and theological wisdom on leading a holy life, he contrasts Christian virtue with other ethical systems. He applies traditional moral theology to present-day dilemmas such as abortion and nuclear armament. Kreeft restores to us what was once common knowledge: the Seven Deadly Sins have an antidote in the Beatitudes. By setting up a close contrast between the two sets of behaviors, Kreeft offers proven guidance in the often bewildering process of discerning right from wrong as we move into the questionable mores of the twenty-first century. He provides a road map of virtue, a map for our earthly pilgrimage synthesized from the accumulated wisdom of centuries of Christians, from Paul and the early Church Fathers through C.S. Lewis.

Socrates' Children Box Set Peter Kreeft; Peter Voth Word On Fire; Word on Fire, Special Edition Box Set, PS, 2023
Peter Kreeft, esteemed philosophy professor and author of over eighty books, has taught college philosophy for sixty years. Throughout those decades, he yearned for a beginner's philosophy text that was clear, accessible, enjoyable, and exciting (perhaps even funny). Finding none that met those criteria, he eventually decided to write it himself. In this four-volume series, Kreeft delivers, with his characteristic wit and clarity, an introduction to philosophy via the hundred greatest philosophers of all time. Socrates’ Children examines the big ideas of four major eras―ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary―and immerses the reader in the “great conversation,” the ongoing dialogue among the great thinkers of history, including the most influential philosopher of all: Socrates, the father of Western philosophy. Volume I: Ancient Philosophers investigates the foundations of philosophy laid by the ancient sages, Greeks, and Romans and introduces the philosophers who asked the first great philosophical questions―about good and evil; truth and falsehood; wisdom, beauty, and love; and the self, the world, and God. Volume II: Medieval Philosophers studies the transformation of philosophy that came about due to an unprecedented figure―Jesus Christ―and considers the philosophers of the great monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as they sought to marry the Greek philosophical tradition with divine revelation. Volume III: Modern Philosophers explores a philosophical world caught up in the spirit of the Enlightenment―a time of both scientific discovery and social upheaval―and examines the philosophers who sought above all to answer the great questions of epistemology and politics: What is knowledge? How can we be certain? What is society? What is its greatest good? Volume IV: Contemporary Philosophers surveys the great philosophers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, an era of the splintering of philosophy into a variety of schools. Some, disconnected from the past, rebelled against the very endeavor of philosophy, but others, seeking to revitalize ancient conversations, returned to and renewed the deepest questions of meaning, happiness, and the human person.

lgli/Peter Kreeft [Kreeft, Peter] - Practical Theology (2014, Ignatius Press).epub
Practical theology : spiritual direction from St. Thomas Aquinas, 358 ways your mind can help you to become a saint from the Summa theologiae Peter Kreeft [Kreeft, Peter] Ignatius Press, 1st, 2014
From a lifetime of studying the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, popular author Peter Kreeft says that his amazement has continually increased not only at Aquinas theoretical, philosophical brilliance and sanity, but also at his personal, practical wisdom, his "existential bite." Yet this second dimension of St. Thomas has usually been eclipsed by the other. Kreeft wrote this book to help bring that sun out from its eclipse. He provides easily digestible samples of the religious wisdom of Aquinas. Here are 359 pieces of wisdom from St. Thomass masterpiece, the Summa Theologiae , which Kreeft says "are literally more valuable than all the kingdoms of this world because they will help you to attain the one thing needful, or the greatest good ", the ultimate end and purpose and meaning of life. Three of its names are "being a saint," "beatitude" ("supreme happiness") and "union with God." That was the principle for Kreeft in choosing which passages to use: do they help you to attain your ultimate end - sanctity, happiness, union with God? St. Thomas would have agreed with writer Leon Bloy, who often wrote that in the end "there is only one tragedy in life: not to have been a saint". These 359 gold nuggets have helped Kreeft in the struggles of real life, to live in the real world, to grow closer to the Lord, and he hopes they will do the same for his readers. After each passage directly from Aquinas, Kreeft provides brief spiritual commentary to help explain it and apply it - practical, personal, existential, "livable" thoughts. He has framed these readings as answers to questions that people actually ask their spiritual directors. Each answer is taken word for word from Aquinas. Among the many topics Aquinas and Kreeft cover here include: The problem of evil; Interpreting the Bible; Love vs. knowledge; Reconciling justice and mercy; Human freedom and divine grace; Angels and demons; The need for theology; Predestination and free will; Three kinds of goods. - Publisher.

I Burned for Your Peace: Augustine's Confessions Unpacked Kreeft, Peter Ignatius Press., 1, 1, 2016
Popular author and philosopher Peter Kreeft delves into one of the most beloved Christian classics of all time—Augustine's Confessions . He collects key passages and offers incisive commentary, making Confessions accessible to any reader who is both intellectually curious and spiritually hungry. The Confessions is a dramatic personal narrative of a soul choosing between eternal life and death, an exploration of the timeless questions great minds have been asking for millennia, and a prayer of praise and thanksgiving to God. I Burned for Your Peace is not a scholarly work but an unpacking of the riches found in Augustine's text. It is existential, personal, and devotional, as well as warm, witty, and thought-provoking. With Kreeft to guide them, readers of the Confessions can overhear and understand the intimate conversation between a towering intellect and the God whose peace he at last humbly accepts.

Socrates Meets Jesus: History’s Greatest Questioner Confronts the Claims of Christ Peter Kreeft IVP Books an imprint of InterVarsity Press, Socrates meets..., Paperback, 2002
What would happen if Socrates--yes, the Socrates of ancient Athens--suddenly showed up on the campus of a major university and enrolled in its divinity school? What would he think of human progress since his day? How would he react to our values? To our culture? And what would he think of Jesus? Peter Kreeft, Christian philosopher and longtime admirer of the historic Socrates, imagines the result. In this drama Socrates meets such fellow students as Bertha Broadmind, Thomas Keptic and Molly Mooney. Throughout, Kreeft weaves an intriguing web as he brings Socrates closer and closer to a meeting with Jesus. Here is a startling and provocative portrayal of reason in search of truth. In a new introduction to this revised edition, Kreeft also highlights the inspiration for this book and the key questions of truth and faith it addresses.

How to be holy : first steps in becoming a saint : a festooning of Abandonment to Divine Providence Peter Kreeft [Kreeft, Peter] Ignatius Press, San Francisco, 2016
The popular, best-selling Kreeft says that "how to be holy, how to be a saint, is the most important topic I have ever written about. It's the whole meaning of life, the 'one thing necessary'". That says a lot considering how prolific he has been as a writer. Yet, with his vast spiritual experience as a teacher and a writer, Kreeft says he is still a "beginner" on how to be holy, and that he wrote this book for other beginners. Thus Kreeft uses the insights and experiences of the saints and great spiritual writers throughout history to show what holiness is and how to achieve it. He especially draws on, or "festoons" from, key points in the classic work by de Caussade,  Abandonment to Divine Providence . Kreeft stresses the simplicity of his approach to holiness, that his book is light on methodology and focuses mainly on the virtue of love, because "sanctity is love", that love is the whole meaning of life, and why "in the evening of our life we will be judged on our love" (Saint John of the Cross). He says his presentation on holiness is a universal one that any theist can benefit from, be they Christian, Jew, or Muslim, because the essence of all authentic religion is holiness. We are all called to be saints, and as the acclaimed French writer Léon Bloy often said, "Life, in the end, has only one tragedy: not to have been a saint." Kreeft underscores that holiness will bring us what we all long for, true happiness, and deep joy. Among the topics he covers in this quest for holiness include: Faith & Reason, Prayer, Grace, Divine Providence, Suffering, Detachment, Duties, Surrender, Peace, Spiritual Warfare, Gratitude, and more. Spiritual & Religion

lgli/Peter Kreeft [Kreeft, Peter] - Prayer for Beginners (2012, Ignatius Press).azw3
Prayer for Beginners Peter Kreeft [Kreeft, Peter] Ignatius Press, 2012
Peter Kreeft brings his unique insights to this most important area of our spiritual lives. He claims he himself is still a beginner in prayer, and this book is for all those, like him, who feel that they are not good at praying but desire to become much better at it. Thus, Kreeft offers simple, but profound advice and practical steps for developing a prayer life based on the time-tested wisdom of the saints and great spiritual writers, especially the principles found in Brother Lawrence's classic, The Practice of the Presence of God. In short, straight-forward and unsentimental chapters, Kreeft covers all the key areas for understanding and developing that intimate form of communication with our Creator that we call prayer. He covers such areas as the necessity of prayer, various motives and methods, steps, patience, suffering, sin, faith, and grace. "There's no shortage of good doctrinal material today. But, for the post-Boomer generations, the burning question remains: How do I begin to pray? Peter Kreeft answers that question in a simple, direct way that will reach ordinary unchurched Americans — as well as devout Catholics who have hit a dry spell. This book can be a powerful tool in the new evangelization." —Mike Aquilina "This is the best short introduction to prayer I've read. Read it and pray."—Ralph Martin, Author, Called to Holiness

lgli/Kreeft, Peter - The Greatest Philosopher Who Ever Lived (2021, Ignatius Press).epub
The Greatest Philosopher Who Ever Lived Kreeft, Peter Ignatius Press, POTL - Mariology 1, 2021
In 2019, Peter Kreeft published Socrates'' Children, a four-volume series on the hundred greatest philosophers of all time, spanning from ancient Greece to contemporary Germany. But he made a terrible mistake: he somehow left out women, and with this, he overlooked the greatest mind of them all.He forgot her—a mysterious housewife from a desert village—because he had forgotten what "philosophy" means. "Philosophy is not the cultivation of cleverness," Kreeft explains, "or the sophistications of scholarship, or the analysis of analysis, or the refutation of refutations, or the deconstruction of deconstructions." No, "philosophy is a romance, a love affair—the love of wisdom."This book is a one-of-a-kind study on Mary of Nazareth, the mother of Jesus. If Jesus Christ is wisdom incarnate, and if Mary loved Him more than anyone else ever did, then it holds that Mary is the greatest philosopher, the greatest wisdom-lover. With precision and humor, Kreeft not only unpacks the thought and spirit of Mary as we know her through Scripture and Church doctrine, but offers a heartfelt crash course in the basics of philosophy—methodology, epistemology, logic, metaphysics, cosmology, ethics, politics, aesthetics, and more—all through the lens of the Mother of God.Fans of Kreeft will find here another fine example of his characteristic freshness, creativity, depth, and readability. But above all, those who are curious about the mother of Jesus, whether they are new to Christian faith or simply hoping to discover it anew, will likely find themselves swept up in the tide of Mary''s wise love for God.

Symbol or Substance: A Dialogue on the Eucharist with C. S. Lewis, Billy Graham and J. R. R. Tolkien Kreeft, Peter Ignatius Press, 2019
In his classic style of imagining fictional conversations between famous persons of history about important topics, Peter Kreeft once again does this in a brilliant way with C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Billy Graham talking about the Eucharist. He picked three of the most loved and respected representatives of the three main Christian theological traditions: the most famous modern Protestant evangelist, Graham; the most famous modern Anglican Christian writer, Lewis; and the most famous and popular modern Roman Catholic writer, Tolkien, whose Lord of the Rings was picked by three major reader polls as “the greatest book of the 20th century.” This “trialogue” explains, defends, and critiques three views of the Eucharist—the Roman Catholic view (transubstantiation), defended by Tolkien; the typically Protestant (holy symbol), defended by Graham; and the Anglican “via media” compromise defended by Lewis. Kreeft says that such a conversation may actually have happened, and it aims at historical realism.

Angels and demons : what do we really know about them? Peter J. Kreeft [Kreeft, Peter J.] Ignatius Press, 2009
In response to actual questions many people have asked him about angels and demons, well-known author and philosophy professor Peter Kreeft separates fact from fantasy and myth from reality as he answers 100 common questions about these spiritual beings. Based on a very popular college course he teaches on this subject, this book responds to the incredible amount of interest in angelic beings and attempts to clear up some of the misinformation abounding in the numerous books today on what we know about these mysterious spirits. Drawing on the Bible, traditional Church teaching and St. Thomas Aquinas, Kreeft gives straight, clear answers to the perennial and philosophical questions asked about angels and demons throughout time. In his typical lucid, profound and sometimes humorous style, Kreeft answers such questions as ''What are angels made of'', ''How do angels communicate with God'', ''How do angels communicate with us'', ''Do demons, or devils, or evil spirits really exist?'' and many more. Includes angel art.

The unaborted Socrates : a dramatic debate on the issues surrounding abortion Peter Kreeft IVP Books, Paperback, 1983
<p>Is abortion a woman's right?</p> <p>When does human life begin?</p> <p>Should we legislate morality?</p> <p>What would happen if the Socrates of old suddenly appeared in modern Athens? Peter Kreeft imagines the dialog that might ensue with three worthy opponents—a doctor, a philosopher and a psychologist—about the arguments surrounding abortion.</p> <p>Kreeft uses Socratic technique to strip away the emotional issues and get to the heart of the rational objections to abortion. Logic joins humor as Socrates challenges the standard rhetoric and passion of the contemporary debate.</p>

Socrates' Children : Modern: The 100 Greatest Philosophers by Peter Kreeft St. Augustine's Press; St. Augustines Press, The 100 greatest philosophers, South Bend, Indiana, 2019
This is the third of a four-volume history of philosophy . . . on ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary philosophy. After the fourth volume is produced in paper, a one-volume clothbound edition, containing all four paperbound editions, will be published. Kreeft focuses on the “big ideas” that have influenced present people and present times, and includes relevant biographical data, proportionate to its importance for each thinker. Moreover, the aim of the work is to stimulate philosophizing, controversy, and argument. It uses ordinary language and logic, not jargon and symbolic logic, and it is commonsensical (like Aristotle) and existential in the sense that it sees philosophy as something to be lived and experienced in life. Philosophy, after all, is not about philosophy but reality . . . about wisdom, life and death, good and evil, and God. Kreeft seeks to be simple and direct and clear. But it is not dumbed down and patronizing. It will stretch the reader, but it is meant for beginnings, not just scholars. It can be used for college classes or do-it-yourselfers. It emphasizes surprises; remember, “philosophy begins in wonder.” And it includes visual aids: charts, cartoons, line drawings, and drawings of each philosopher.

A summa of the ''summa'': the essential philosophical passages of St. Thomas Aquinas' ''Summa Theologica'' edited and explained for beginners Kreeft, Peter [Kreeft, Peter] Ignatius Press, 1, 2011
Saint Thomas Aquinas is universally recognized as one of the greatest philosophers who ever lived. His writings combine the two fundamental ideals of philosophical writing: clarity and profundity. He is a master of metaphysics and technical terminology, yet so full of both theoretical and practical wisdom. He is the master of common sense. His major work, the Summa Theologica , is timeless, but particularly important today because of his synthesis of faith and reason, revelation and philosophy, and the Biblical and the classical Greco-Roman heritages. This unique book combines selected essential philosophical passages from Thomas' Summa with footnotes and explanations by Kreeft, a popular Thomist teacher and writer. Kreeft selected those passages from Thomas that are intrinsically important, non-technical enough to be intelligible to modern readers, and most likely to be used in a class or by independent readers who want to study the Summa on their own. Kreeft's detailed footnotes explain difficult or technical passages and call attention to points of particular significance for the modern reader. This book is the most intelligent, clear, and useful access to Saint Thomas in print. Includes a glossary and an index. "This book differs from all other books on Saint Thomas because it gives the words of Thomas himself, not a modern summary, but pared down to essentials, and with footnotes which do what a professor in a class would do." — Peter Kreeft

Practical theology : spiritual direction from St. Thomas Aquinas, 358 ways your mind can help you to become a saint from the Summa theologiae Kreeft, Peter; Aquinas Saint Thomas Ignatius Press, Fort Collins, CO, 2014
From a lifetime of studying the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, popular author Peter Kreeft says that his amazement has continually increased not only at Aquinas' theoretical, philosophical brilliance and sanity, but also at his personal, practical wisdom, his "existential bite." Yet this second dimension of St. Thomas has usually been eclipsed by the other. Kreeft wrote this book to help bring that sun out from its eclipse. He provides easily digestible samples of the religious wisdom of Aquinas. Here are 359 pieces of wisdom from St. Thomas's masterpiece, the __Summa Theologiae__ , which Kreeft says "are literally more valuable than all the kingdoms of this world because they will help you to attain 'the one thing needful,' or 'the greatest good' ", the ultimate end and purpose and meaning of life. Among the many topics Aquinas and Kreeft cover here include: * The problem of evil * Interpreting the Bible * Love vs. knowledge * Reconciling justice and mercy * Human freedom and divine grace * Angels and demons * The need for theology * Predestination and free will * Three kinds of goods "Its notoriously difficult to synopsize Aquinas on anything. However, if I were to choose someone to do the job well, it would be Peter Kreeft. Many will find this presentation helpful to develop their own replies to the questions that bother the minds of today's searchers." **- Romanus Cessario, O.P.**, Saint John's Seminary, Brighton, Mass.

Three philosophies of life : Ecclesiastes: life as vanity : Job: life as suffering : Song of Songs: life as love Kreeft, Peter Ignatius Press, 2009
Product Description "I've been a philosopher for all my adult life and the three most profound books of philosophy that I have ever read are Ecclesiastes, Job, and Song of Songs." These are the opening lines of Kreeft's Three Philosophies of Life. He reflects that there are ultimately only three philosophies of life and each one is represented by one of these books of the Bible-life is vanity; life is suffering; life is love. In these three books Kreeft shows how we have Dante's great epic The Divine Comedy played out, from Hell to Purgatory to Heaven. But it is an epic played out in our hearts and lives, here and now. Just as there is movement in Dante's epic, so there is movement in these books, from Ecclesiates to Job, from Job to Song of Songs. Love is the final answer to Ecclesiastes' quest, the alternative to vanity, and the true meaning of life. Finally, Kreeft sees in these books the epitome of theological virtues of faith, hope and love and "an essential summary of the spiritual history of the world".

lgli/Socratic Logic_ A Logic Text Using Socrati - Kreeft, Peter.pdf
Socratic Logic: A Logic Text using Socratic Method, Platonic Questions, and Aristotelian Principles, Edition 3.1 Kreeft, Peter & Dougherty, Trent Saint Augustine's Press, Incorporated, Ed. 3.1., South Bend, Ind, Indiana, 2010
This new and revised edition of Peter Kreeft's Socratic Logic is updated, adding new exercises and more complete examples, all with Kreeft's characteristic clarity and wit. Since its introduction in the spring of 2004, Socratic Logic has proven to be a different type of logic text: . (1) This is the only complete system of classical Aristotelian logic in print. The "old logic" is still the natural logic of the four language arts (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). Symbolic, or "mathematical," logic is not for the humanities. (How often have you heard someone argue in symbolic logic?) (2) This book is simple and user-friendly. It is highly interactive, with a plethora of exercises and a light, engaging style. (3) It is practical. It is designed for do-it-yourselfers as well as classrooms. It emphasizes topics in proportion to probable student use: e.g., interpreting ordinary language, not only analyzing but also constructing effective arguments, smoking out hidden assumptions, making "argument maps," and using Socratic method in various circumstances. (4) It is philosophical. Its exercises expose students to many classical quotations, and additional chapters introduce philosophical issues in a Socratic manner and from a common- sense, realistic point of view. It prepares students for reading Great Books rather than Dick and Jane, and models Socrates as the beginner's ideal teacher and philosopher.

Probes: Deep Sea Diving into Saint John's Gospel: Questions for Individual or Group Study Peter Kreeft Ignatius Press, POTL - Scriptures 1, 2019
This is no ordinary book. It is a set of probing questions (1,450 in fact) designed to help individuals or groups, especially groups, to dive deeply into Saint John's Gospel. No answers are provided, but the questions are phrased in such a way as to set a person in a reliable direction for finding the answers. The questions correspond to the verses of the Gospel and require active and personal interaction. Some of the questions are easy, some difficult, and they are marked accordingly. Some questions include background information or hints that help the reader along. Some were written with a fair bit of humor. Any person or group using these questions to explore John will find themselves entertained as well as informed and inspired.

A Shorter Summa: The Essential Philosophical Passages of St. Thomas Aquinas Summa Theologica Edited and Explained by Peter Kreeft edited and explained for beginners [by] Peter Kreeft San Francisco: Ignatius Press, San Francisco, California, 1993
<p><P>A shortened version of Kreeft's much larger Summa of the Summa, which in turn was a shortened version of the Summa Theologica. The reason for the double shortening is pretty obvious&#58; the original runs some 4000 pages! (The Summa of the Summa was just over 500.) The Summa is certainly the greatest, most ambitious, most rational book of theology ever written. In it, there is also much philosophy, which is selected, excerpted, arranged, introduced, and explained in footnotes here by Kreeft, a popular Thomist teacher and writer. St. Thomas Aquinas is universally recognized as one of the greatest philosophers who ever lived. His writings combine the two fundamental ideals of philosophical writing&#58; clarity and profundity. He is a master of metaphysics and technical terminology, yet so full of both theoretical and practical wisdom. He is the master of common sense. The Summa Theologica is timeless, but particularly important today because of his synthesis of faith and reason, revelation and philosophy, and the Biblical and the classical Greco-Roman heritages. This little book is designed for beginners, either for classroom use or individually. It contains the most famous and influential passages of St. Thomas' philosophy with copious aids to understanding them.</p>

Handbook of Catholic Apologetics: Reasoned Answers to Questions of Faith Peter J. Kreeft, Fr. Ronald K. Tacelli SJ Ignatius Press, 1st, 2009
Our compelling reasons for writing this book are three:1. We are certain that the Christian faith is true.2. We are only a little less certain that the very best thing we can possiblydo for others is to persuade them of this truth, in which there is joy andpeace and love incomparable in this world, and infinite andincomprehensible in the next.3. We are a little less certain, but still confident, that honest reasoning canlead any open-minded person to this very same conclusion.
