Frank Little and the IWW : The Blood That Stained an American Family Jane Little Botkin Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, OK, 2017
Franklin Henry Little (1878-1917), An Organizer For The Western Federation Of Miners And The Industrial Workers Of The World (iww), Fought In Some Of The Early Twentieth Century's Most Contentious Labor And Free-speech Struggles. Following His Lynching In Butte, Montana, His Life And Legacy Became Shrouded In Tragedy And Family Secrets. In Frank Little And The Iww, Author Jane Little Botkin Chronicles Her Great-granduncle's Fascinating Life And Reveals Its Connections To The History Of American Labor And The First Red Scare. Beginning With Little's Childhood In Missouri And Territorial Oklahoma, Botkin Recounts His Evolution As A Renowned Organizer And Agitator On Behalf Of Workers In Corporate Agriculture, Oil, Logging, And Mining. Frank Little Traveled The West And Midwest To Gather Workers Beneath The Banner Of The Wobblies (as Iww Members Were Known), Making Soapbox Speeches On City Street Corners, Organizing Strikes, And Writing Polemics Against Unfair Labor Practices.^ His Brother And Sister-in-law Also Joined The Fight For Labor, But It Was Frank Who Led The Charge--and Who Was Regularly Threatened, Incarcerated, And Assaulted For His Efforts. In His Final Battles In Arizona And Montana, Botkin Shows, Little And The Iww Leadership Faced Their Strongest Opponent Yet As Powerful Copper Magnates Countered Union Efforts With Deep-laid Networks Of Spies And Gunmen, An Antilabor Press, And Local Vigilantes. For A Time, Frank Little's Murder Became A Rallying Cry For The Iww. But After The United States Entered The Great War And Congress Passed The Sedition Act (1918) To Ensure Support For The War Effort, Many Politicians And Corporations Used The Act To Target Labor Radicals, Squelch Dissent, And Inspire Vigilantism. Like Other Wage-working Families Smeared With The Traitor Label, The Little Family Endured Raids, Arrests, And Indictments In Iww Trials.^ Having Scoured The West For Firsthand Sources In Family, Library, And Museum Collections, Botkin Melds The Personal Narrative Of An American Family With The Story Of The Labor Movements That Once Shook The Nation To Its Core. In Doing So, She Throws Into Sharp Relief The Lingering Consequences Of Political Repression-- A Biography Of Franklin Henry Little, A Labor Organizer For The Western Federation Of Miners And The Industrial Workers Of The World (iww), Who Was Lynched In Butte, Montana In 1917. Miners, Peasants and Entrepreneurs: Regional Development in the Central Highlands of Peru (Cambridge Latin American Studies, Series Number 48) Norman Long and Bryan Roberts Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Cambridge Latin American Studies, 1, 2009

This volume traces the development of the central highlands, one of Peru's major mining regions. It draws on extensive fieldwork carried out in Peru between 1970 and 1982, spanning a reforming military government, reaction and a return to civilian politics under Belaunde. Through historical material combined with field studies of villages and of the major town of the region, Huancayo, the book examines the economic and cultural processes underlying the 'progressive' reputation of the region in Peru and in the literature on development. Since the major enterprise of the region, the Cerro de Pasco Mining Corporation, was, until the 1970s, foreign owned, a persisting theme is the type of economic growth associated with and the distortions produced by, foreign capitalist economic enclaves on predominantly peasant economies. The political consequences are examined, showing the weakness of regional interest groups and the failure of contemporary regional development policies.

Desert between the mountains : Mormons, miners, padres, mountain men, and the opening of the Great Basin, 1772-1869 Michael S. Durham University of Oklahoma Press, Oklahoma paperbacks edition, Norman, Okla, 1999
On July 24, 1847, a band of Mormon pioneers descended into the Salt Lake Valley. Having crossed the Great Plains and hauled their wagons over the Rocky Mountains, they believed that their long search for a permanent home had finally come to an end. The valley was an arid and inhospitable place, but to them it was Zion. Within ten years of their arrival, the Mormons had established nineteen communities, extending all the way to San Diego, California - a remarkable feat of colonization and one of the great successes of the westward movement. Desert Between the Mountains is by no means, however, a story of splendid and stoic isolation. Beginning with an explanation of the Great Basin's unique and enigmatic topography, Michael S. Durham delineates the region as a crucible for a complex and exciting narrative history. Tales of nomadic Indian tribes, Spanish ecclesiastics, intrepid fur-trappers, and adventurous early explorers are thoroughly chronicled. Moreover, Durham depicts the Mormon way of life under a constant strain from its interaction with miners, soldiers, mountain men, the Pony Express, railroad builders, federal officials, and an assortment of other so-called Gentiles. Desert Between the Mountains concludes with the joining of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, in 1869, an event that marked the end of the pioneer era. This is a dramatic, multifaceted, and definitive study of the Great Basin, demonstrating, for the first time, that it is a region unified in its history as well as its geography - that today includes all of Nevada, most of Utah, and parts of five other surrounding states.

A room for the summer : adventure, misadventure, and seduction in the mines of the Coeur d'Alene Fritz Wolff University of Oklahoma Press, Illustrated, PS, 2005
In A Room for the Summer , Fritz Wolff takes the reader on a memorable journey into the rough-and-tumble world of hardrock mining, recounting his experiences both above and below ground as an apprentice engineer during the late 1950s. In June 1956, at the age of eighteen, Wolff went to work for the Bunker Hill Company in Kellogg, Idaho, in the Coeur dAlene region. Arriving in a tired 1939 Chevy coupe, with about twenty dollars in his pocket, Wolff spent three college summers working for Bunker Hill. He learned firsthand the pleasures of camaraderie with fellow workers and the dangers of working underground. Today the hardrock mining industry is all but forgotten. The Bunker Hill Company is known, not because it produced 430 million ounces of silver and not because it provided a living for thousands of families for more than a century, but because it is one of the largest EPA superfund sites. Wolff does not idealize the mining industry; for many workers the conditions were nightmarish. But in spare, lyrical prose, he evokes the intrinsic goodness of a simpler time, when hardworking folks went about their business with courage, humor, and lots of gumption.

Portrait of a Prospector : Edward Schieffelin's Own Story Edward Schieffelin; R. Bruce Craig University of Oklahoma Press, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, OK, 2017
Edward “Ed” Schieffelin (1847–1897) was the epitome of the American frontiersman. A former Indian scout, he discovered what would become known as the legendary Tombstone, Arizona, silver lode in 1877. His search for wealth followed a path well-trod by thousands who journeyed west in the mid to late nineteenth century to try their luck in mining country. But unlike typical prospectors who spent decades futilely panning for gold, Schieffelin led an epic life of wealth and adventure. In Portrait of a Prospector, historian R. Bruce Craig pieces together the colorful memoirs and oral histories of this singular individual to tell Schieffelin's story in his own words. Craig places the prospector's family background and times into context in an engaging introduction, then opens Schieffelin's story with the frontiersman's accounts of his first prospecting attempts at ten years old, his flight from home at twelve to search for gold, and his initial wanderings in California, Nevada, and Utah. In direct, unsentimental prose, Schieffelin describes his expedition into Arizona Territory, where army scouts assured him that he “would find no rock... but his own tombstone.” Unlike many prospectors who simply panned for gold, Schieffelin took on wealthy partners who invested the enormous funds needed for hard rock mining. He and his co-investors in the Tombstone claim became millionaires. Restless in his newfound life of wealth and leisure, Schieffelin soon returned to exploration. Upon his early death in Oregon he left behind a new strike, the location of which remains a mystery. Collecting the words of an exceptional figure who embodied the western frontier, Craig offers readers insight into the mentality of prospector-adventurers during an age of discovery and of limitless potential.Portrait of a Prospector is highly recommended for undergraduate western history survey courses.

nexusstc/The Miners of Windber: The Struggles of New Immigrants for Unionization, 1890s-1930s/c3fafd3c5b04d5de5584e7b6befbd239.epub
The Miners of Windber : The Struggles of New Immigrants for Unionization, 1890s-1930s Mildred Allen Beik Pennsylvania State University Press, Pennsylvania State University Press, University Park, 1996
In 1897 the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company founded Windber as a company town for its miners in the bituminous coal country of Pennsylvania. The Miners of Windber chronicles the coming of unionization to Windber, from the 1890s, when thousands of new immigrants flooded Pennsylvania in search of work, through the New Deal era of the 1930s, when the miners' rights to organize, join the United Mine Workers of America, and bargain collectively were recognized after years of bitter struggle. Mildred Allen Beik, a Windber native whose father entered the coal mines at age eleven in 1914, explores the struggle of miners and their families against the company, whose repressive policies encroached on every part of their lives. That Windber's population represented twenty-five different nationalities, including Slovaks, Hungarians, Poles, Italians, and Carpatho-Russians, was a potential obstacle to the solidarity of miners. Beik, however, shows how the immigrants overcame ethnic fragmentation by banding together as a class to unionize the mines. Work, family, church, fraternal societies, and civic institutions all proved critical as men and women alike adapted to new working conditions and to a new culture. Circumstance, if not principle, forced miners to embrace cultural pluralism in their fight for greater democracy, reforms of capitalism, and an inclusive, working-class, definition of what it meant to be an American. Beik draws on a wide variety of sources, including oral histories gathered from thirty-five of the oldest living immigrants in Windber, foreign-language newspapers, fraternal society collections, church manuscripts, public documents, union records, and census materials. The struggles of Windber's diverse working class undeniably mirror the efforts of working people everywhere to democratize the undemocratic America they knew. Their history suggests some of the possibilities and limitations, strengths and weaknesses, of worker protest in the early twentieth century.

Germinal by Émile Zola; translated with an introduction by Havelock Ellis E. P. Dutton; J. M. Dent, Everyman's library. Fiction, no. 897A, New Am. ed., New York, London, New York State, 1952
The thirteenth novel in Emile Zola's great Rougon-Macquart sequence, Germinal expresses outrage at the exploitation of the many by the few, but also shows humanity's capacity for compassion and hope.Etienne Lantier, an unemployed railway worker, is a clever but uneducated young man with a dangerous temper. Forced to take a back-breaking job at Le Voreux mine when he cannot get other work, he discovers that his fellow miners are ill, hungry, and in debt, unable to feed and clothe their families. When conditions in the mining community deteriorate even further, Lantier finds himself leading a strike that could mean starvation or salvation for all.

An Open Pit Visible from the Moon: The Wilderness Act and the Fight to Protect Miners Ridge and the Public Interest (Volume 2) (The Environment in Modern North America) Adam M. Sowards University of Oklahoma Press, The Environment in Modern North America, 2, 2020
Situated among the North Cascade Mountains of Washington State, in the Glacier Peak Wilderness Area, Miners Ridge contains vast quantities of copper. Kennecott Copper Corporation’s plan to develop an open-pit mine there was, when announced in 1966, the first test of the mining provision of the Wilderness Act passed by Congress in 1964. The battle over the proposed “Open Pit, Big Enough to Be Seen from the Moon,” as activists called it, drew the attention of both local and national conservationists, who vowed to stop the desecration of one of the West’s most scenic places. Kennecott Copper had the full force of the law and mining industry behind it in asserting its extractive rights. Meanwhile the U.S. Forest Service was determined to defend its authority to manage wilderness. __An Open Pit Visible from the Moon__ tells the story of this historic struggle to define the contours of the Wilderness Act—its possibilities and limits. Combining rigorous analysis and deft storytelling, Adam M. Sowards re-creates the contest between Kennecott and its shareholders on one hand and activists on the other, intent on maintaining wilderness as a place immune to the calculus of profit. A host of actors cross these pages—from cabinet secretaries and a Supreme Court justice to local doctors and college students—all contributing to a drama that made Miners Ridge a cause célèbre for the nation’s wilderness movement. As locals testified at public hearings and writers penned profiles in the nation’s magazines and newspapers, the volatile political economy of copper proved equally influential in frustrating Kennecott’s plans. No law or court ruling could keep Kennecott from mining copper, but the pit was never dug. Identifying the contingent factors and forces that converged and coalesced in this case, Sowards’s narrative recalls a critical moment in the struggle over the nation’s wild places, even as it puts the unpredictability of history on full display.

The Miners of Windber : The Struggles of New Immigrants for Unionization, 1890s-1930s MILDRED ALLEN BEIK Pennsylvania State University Press, Book collections on Project MUSE, University Park, PA, 2021
Towards A Comparative History Of Coalfield Societies (Studies in Labour History) Andy Croll; Stefan Berger Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Abingdon, Oxon, 2016
Few areas of labour history have received as much attention as the coal industry, with miners often finding themselves at the centre of studies on working-class political and industrial history. Yet whilst much has been written about the struggles of miners and their unions in particular countries, their national confrontations and political organization, much less work has been done on the regional communities and how they related both to the national and international picture. The central theme of this volume is to transcend such over-arching national models and to focus instead on local coal mining societies which can then be compared and contrasted to similar communities elsewhere. In so doing the book is able to tackle a number of familiar labour history themes in a more nuanced way, exploring issues of political activism and class relationships from the perspectives of gender, ethnicity, race and specific localized cultural traditions. As the chapters in this volume illustrate, such an approach can offer rich and often surprising conclusions, in many cases challenging the accepted notion of miners as the vanguard of militant working-class political activism. Adopting a regional approach that compares coalfield communities from five continents, this volume reflects coalfield experiences on a truly global scale. By looking at what made communities unique as well as what they shared in common, a much fuller understanding of the workplace, neighbourhood, family, identity and political organization is possible. Underlining the strong connections between politics, community and identity, this work emphasizes the challenges and opportunities available to labour historians, pushing forward the boundaries of the discipline in new and exciting ways.

We the Miners : Self-Government in the California Gold Rush Andrea Griet McDowell Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2022
A surprising account of frontier law that challenges the image of the Wild West. In the absence of state authority, Gold Rush miners crafted effective government by the people--but not for all the people. Gold Rush California was a frontier on steroids: 1,500 miles from the nearest state, it had a constantly fluctuating population and no formal government. A hundred thousand single men came to the new territory from every corner of the nation with the sole aim of striking it rich and then returning home. The circumstances were ripe for chaos, but as Andrea McDowell shows, this new frontier was not nearly as wild as one would presume. Miners turned out to be experts at self-government, bringing about a flowering of American-style democracy--with all its promises and deficiencies. The Americans in California organized and ran meetings with an efficiency and attention to detail that amazed foreign observers. Hundreds of strangers met to adopt mining codes, decide claim disputes, run large-scale mining projects, and resist the dominance of companies financed by outside capital. Most notably, they held criminal trials on their own authority. But, mirroring the societies back east from which they came, frontiersmen drew the boundaries of their legal regime in racial terms. The ruling majority expelled foreign miners from the diggings and allowed their countrymen to massacre the local Native Americans. And as the new state of California consolidated, miners refused to surrender their self-endowed authority to make rules and execute criminals, presaging the don't-tread-on-me attitudes of much of the contemporary American west. In We the Miners , Gold Rush California offers a well-documented test case of democratic self-government, illustrating how frontiersmen used meetings and the rules of parliamentary procedure to take the place of the state.

Shorty Harris, or the Price of Gold: A Novel (Literature of the American West, 3) Bevis, William W., 1941- Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 1999
Americans are seekers. Shorty Harris, or The Price of Gold is the story of a legendary desert prospector who spent his whole life searching for gold and, when he found it, gave it away. He died broke in 1934 and wrote his own epitaph: "Here lies Shorty Harris, a single blanket jackass prospector." William W. Bevis's sweeping western novel begins during the gold rush of 1849 and brings Shorty from violin lessons in Providence, Rhode Island, to the mining camps of Nevada, then follows the misfortunes and mistakes that leave him, finally, estranged from family and society, facing only himself. But this is also the story of a desert consciousness, and Death Valley is a major character. As Shorty slowly and painfully learns the land - the desert plants and animals, and their subtle, necessary rhythms of waiting, finding, and letting go - his search also becomes, ironically, a quest for harmony with the land he exploits.

Inside Mining Capitalism : The Micropolitics of Work on the Congolese and Zambian Copperbelts Benjamin Rubbers, Thomas Mcnamara, James Musonda, Kristien Geenen, Emma Lochery Boydell & Brewer, Limited, African Issues, 43, 2021
A groundbreaking analysis of 21st century labour practices in the mining industry and the new scramble for industrial power on the African continent. Since the beginning of the 21st century, African countries with mineral resources have witnessed an unprecedented rise in foreign direct investments and the development of new flexible workforce management practices in the mining industry. But what does this mean for those who actually work in this industry? Based on research in the Congo and Zambia, where a mining boom has led to more than thirty new mining projects in recent years, this book explores the processes of improvisation and adaptation behind the emergence of this neoliberal labour regime. The contributors show how mining projects' labour practices have been mediated, negotiated, or resisted by mine workers, unionists, and human resource managers. They discuss variations in labour practices put in place by new mining projects depending on the type of capital involved, the type of mine being developed, and their location. Finally, the book examines the implications of power dynamics surrounding companies' labour strategies from the broader perspective of the responsibility of trade unions, gender equality, and identity politics.
