Arthur Dove - Always Connect DeLue, Rachael Ziady;Dove, Arthur Garfield The University of Chicago Press, Illustrated, PS, 2016
Arthur Dove, often credited as America’s first abstract painter, created dynamic and evocative images inspired by his surroundings, from the farmland of upstate New York to the North Shore of Long Island. But his interests were not limited to nature. Challenging earlier accounts that view him as simply a landscape painter,  Arthur Dove: Always Connect  reveals for the first time the artist’s intense engagement with language, the nature of social interaction, and scientific and technological advances. Rachael Z. DeLue rejects the traditional assumption that Dove can only be understood in terms of his nature paintings and association with photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz and his circle. Instead, she uncovers deep and complex connections between Dove’s work and his world, including avant-garde literature, popular music, meteorology, mathematics, aviation, and World War II.  Arthur Dove  also offers the first sustained account of Dove’s Dadaesque multimedia projects and the first explorations of his animal imagery and the role of humor in his art. Beautifully illustrated with works from all periods of Dove’s career, this book presents a new vision of one of America’s most innovative and captivating artists—and reimagines how the story of modern art in the United States might be told. Review “Provocative. . . In detailed readings of numerous paintings, including calligraphic aspects of Dove’s signatures and comparisons with contemporaneous graphic and scientific representations as sources for Dove’s depictions of natural phenomena, the author sheds new light on how to read the abstract painterly elements of the artist’s works. . . . Highly recommended.” ( Choice ) “Reveals a remarkable array of forces at work in what is probably the best body of painted work in the circle around Alfred Stieglitz. DeLue avoids many classical approaches, questions, issues; instead, she delivers a visual cultural investigation of historical discourses—about weather, sound recording and broadcast, shorthand, and others—that pays substantial dividends when DeLue returns to discuss the paintings. This is an exemplary art historical appropriation of visual culture, and it puts forward a strong thesis about what motivates Dove’s major works of 1921 to 1946.” ( Critical Inquiry ) “A timely reassessment and recounting of Dove’s work, thought, and practice.” ( On the Seawall ) “Sheds light on previously little known dimensions of [Dove’s] work. With the help of her unmatchable knowledge of paining and Dove, DeLue has reinterpreted Dove’s work in a very fresh way.” ( Washington BookReview ) “Through its focus on a single artist, the American modernist painter Arthur Dove, DeLue’s book increasingly widens its scope to take in everything from weather science to jazz improvisation, from the study of Gregg shorthand to the structure of the radium atom. DeLue follows where Dove’s work and life lead, and the results are no less dazzling than the paintings that appear in full color in this splendid book.” (Richard Meyer, author of What Was Contemporary Art?) “DeLue presents a Dove just waiting to be revisited, a Dove so much more interesting and beguiling than previously assumed. This is a Dove who engages the most vernacular things—maps, letters, numbers, weather, metal, natural and manmade sounds, hair, elemental shapes—to arrive at a refreshingly prosaic and often literal sense of connectedness. This is the boldest, the most illuminating, the most persuasive, and frankly the most interesting study of pre-1945 American modernism I have ever read.” (Leo Mazow, University of Arkansas) About the Author Rachael Z. DeLue is associate professor of art history at Princeton University. She is the author of George Inness and the Science of Landscape , also published by the University of Chicago Press, and coeditor of Landscape Theory .

George Inness and the Science of Landscape Rachael Ziady DeLue; George Inness University of Chicago Press, University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2008
George Inness (1825-94), long considered one of America's greatest landscape painters, has yet to receive his full due from scholars and critics. A complicated artist and thinker, Inness painted stunningly beautiful, evocative views of the American countryside. Less interested in representing the details of a particular place than in rendering the "subjective mystery of nature," Inness believed that capturing the spirit or essence of a natural scene could point to a reality beyond the physical or, as Inness put it, "the reality of the unseen." Throughout his career, Inness struggled to make visible what was invisible to the human eye by combining a deep interest in nineteenth-century scientific inquiry—including optics, psychology, physiology, and mathematics—with an idiosyncratic brand of mysticism. Rachael Ziady DeLue's __George Inness and the Science of Landscape__—the first in-depth examination of Inness's career to appear in several decades—demonstrates how the artistic, spiritual, and scientific aspects of Inness's art found expression in his masterful landscapes. In fact, Inness's practice was not merely shaped by his preoccupation with the nature and limits of human perception; he conceived of his labor as a science in its own right. This lavishly illustrated work reveals Inness as profoundly invested in the science and philosophy of his time and illuminates the complex manner in which the fields of art and science intersected in nineteenth-century America. Long-awaited, this reevaluation of one of the major figures of nineteenth-century American art will prove to be a seminal text in the fields of art history and American studies.

Picturing (Terra Foundation Essays) Rachael Ziady DeLue; Terra Foundation for American Art Chicago, Illinois: Terra Foundation for American Art, Terra Foundation essays -- Volume 1, Chicago, Illinois, 2016
"The history of American art is a history of objects, but it is also a history of ideas about how we create and consume these objects. As Picturing convincingly shows, the critical tradition in American art has given rise to profound thinking about the nature and capacity of images and formed responses to some of most pressing problems of picturing: What is an image, and why make one? What do images do? ... Picturing brings together essays by a distinguished international group of scholars who discuss the creation and consumption of images from the early modern period through the end of the twentieth century. Some of the contributions focus on art critical texts, like Gertrude Stein's portrait of Cézanne, while others have as their point of departure particular artworks, from a portrait of Benjamin Franklin to Eadweard Muybridge's nineteenth-century photographs of the California Coast. Works that addressed images and image making were not confined to the academy; they spilled out into poetry, literature, theater, and philosophy, and the essays' considerations likewise range freely, from painting to natural history illustrations, travel narratives, and popular fiction. Together, the contributions demonstrate a rich deliberation that thoroughly debunks the notion that American art is merely derivative of a European tradition."--Publisher's description

A beautiful presentation of fifty masterworks of late 19th- to mid-20th-century avant-garde European art from one of Americas most distinguished private collections Czanne and the Modern showcases fifty masterworks of late 19th- to mid-20th-century avant-garde European art from the Henry and Rose Pearlman Collection, one of the most distinguished private collections of modern art in the United States. Among the iconic images represented are Paul Czannes Mont Sainte-Victoire , Vincent van Goghs Tarascon Stagecoach , and Amedeo Modiglianis portrait of Jean Cocteau, as well as an outstanding suite of sixteen watercolors by Czanne. The volume opens with Henry Pearlmans Reminiscences of a Collector, a fascinating first-person narrative, newly annotated to identify key individuals and dates mentioned in the text. An essay by art historian Rachael Z. DeLue places Pearlman in the context of mid-20th-century American collecting, and a detailed chronology illuminates Pearlmans collecting practices in relation to noteworthy events in the art world. A series of sixteen brief essays by leading scholars focuses on each of the represented artists and their works, richly illustrated with sumptuous color plates, select details, and numerous comparative images. A comprehensive checklist documenting each of the worksincluding detailed provenance, exhibition history, bibliographic references, and commentary by a conservatorrounds out this handsome volume, which is published to accompany the first international tour of this important collection.

Artistic representations of landscape are studied widely in areas ranging from art history to geography to sociology, yet there has been little consensus about how to understand the relationship between landscape and art. This book brings together more than fifty scholars from these multiple disciplines to establish new ways of thinking about landscape in art. About the Author James Elkins is E.C. Chadbourne Chair in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is general series editor of "The Art Seminar." His many books include Pictures and Tears , How to Use Your Eyes , What Painting Is and, most recently, The Strange Place of Religion in Contemporary Art and Master Narratives and Their Discontents , all published by Routledge. A groundbreaking ecocritical exploration of American art that examines thecomplex and evolving relationship between art and the environment Public awareness of environmental issues has never been greater, nor has the need for imagining more sustainable and ethical habits of human action and thought, including environmentally informed ways of understanding art history. This multidisciplinary book offers the first broad ecocritical review of American art and examines the environmental contexts of artistic practice from the colonial period to the present day. Tracing how visions of the environment have changed from the Native-European encounter to the emergence of modern ecological activism, more than a dozen scholars and practitioners discuss how artists have both responded to and actively instigated changes in ecological understanding. Far-reaching in its interpretive approach, Natures Nation looks at artworks acrossgenres and mediaincluding painting, sculpture, prints, photography, decorative arts, and videorevealingimportant new discoveries about creative encounters with environmental history and politics through materials, techniques, subjects, and ideas. The book features work by more than onehundred artists, from Charles Willson Peale, Thomas Cole, and Winslow Homer to Georgia OKeeffe, Jacob Lawrence, and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. Providing a fascinating and timely reframing of more than three centuries of American art, this volume is a powerful example of how greater ecological consciousness can expand and enrich the discipline of art history.

Dining with the doctor : the unauthorized Whovian cookbook Oseland, Chris-Rachael CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform] ; [Distributed by Amazon.com, First edition, Place of publication not identified, 2012
Hello, sweetie. Your taste buds are about to take a wibbly wobbly, timey wimey adventure through the Doctor Who reboot. Megafan and food writer Chris-Rachael Oseland spent a year rewatching all of series one through six and experimenting in her kitchen to bring you a fresh recipe for every single episode. This book is a treat for any Whovian who wants to offer more than a plate of fish fingers and a bowl of custard at your next viewing party. Want to host an elegant dinner party to show off your new Tardis corset? Start the evening with a Two Streams Garden Cocktail followed by Baked Hath, Marble Cucumber Circuits with Vesuvian Fire Dipping Sauce, Professor Yana’s Gluten Neutrino Map Binder, Slitheen Eggs, and some of Kazran’s Night Sky Fog Cups for dessert. If you’re just getting a few friends together to watch the latest episode, why not offer them an Ood Mezze Plate to munch on as stragglers wander in followed by some quick and easy Fish Custard Tacos, Open Faced Dalek Ironsides, Sontaran Soldiers, and a Cinnamon Pull Apart Crack in the Wall. They can wash it all down with a cup of the Pond’s Wedding Punch. Lets be honest. No Whovian gathering is complete without them, so you also get an entire bonus chapter dedicated to interesting alternative takes on fish fingers and custard. This comprehensive cookbook includes eighteen adult beverages, more than two dozen recipes for vegetarians, twenty that are safe for people with wheat allergies, and ten for the low carb dieters. You’ll be prepared for every possible guest. The ebook also includes over 50 full color photos, a linked table of contents for easy navigation, and a useful appendix. Put on your fez and straighten your bow tie. You own a cookbook now. Cookbooks are cool. Baby Love : An Affectionate Miscellany Hale, Rachael Andrews McMeel Publishing LLC, 2010;2008
It is the nature of babies to be in bliss. —Deepak Chopra Award-winning photographer Rachael Hale turns her lens on a new subject, babies. Rachael Hale's luminous four-color photography captures the essence of babies napping, laughing and mugging for the camera. Whether the babies are splashing happily in the bath, dozing on the sofa or gazing at the camera with wide-eyed rapture, Hale's images focus on the infants themselves, and her lens captures the inner soul, humanity and character of each little one. Baby Love combines more than 100 expressive baby portraits with a mixture of poetry and verse, along with surprising facts and historical details that celebrate all things baby. Readers will learn where birthdays originated and how different countries around the globe celebrate the annual milestone, as well as additional baby-inspired facts and trivia. Also included are lists of the top boy and girl names to help inspire moms- and dads-to-be. Hale has been designated as a Master of Photography at the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography Awards, and received her fellowship — the highest accolade a New Zealand photographer can achieve — in 2000.

Wood for sheep : the unauthorized Settlers cookbook Oseland, Chris-Rachael CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, First edition., United States?], United States, 2013
Real geeks don’t order pizza. It’s not that we don’t want to. It’s that we can’t. Get five geeks together and three of them will have some kind of dietary restrictions. That’s no reason to give up on dinner and gaming with your friends. In addition to hextastic homages to everyone’s favorite board game, this cookbook includes over 100 recipes tailored to fit nearly any diet. There are over 80 recipes for vegetarians, more than 60 for people with Celiac disease or gluten intolerance, 50 for people with milk allergies or lactose intolerance, over 30 for vegans and nearly 30 for low carb primal dieters. If that’s not nerdy enough for you, nearly all the recipes are also both kosher and halal. Get your friends together for a game night. No matter how weird they are, you really can have them all under one roof for one meal while you play one game. The recipes are split into two sections. The first half of the book is loaded with full scale, highly configurable, edible maps designed for nearly any gaming situation. The second half pays homage to Building Cost cards with recipes chock full of sheep and grain plus creative interpretations of wood, brick, and ore. Have your friends over for brunch with the home made Breakfast Taco or Waffle Bar maps, impress them on a picnic with the Settlers of the Cold Salad recipes, or even host a Settlers themed Thanksgiving dinner. If you need more sheep and grain in your life, try the beer marinated Lamb Kabobs, Moroccan Inspired City Lamb, or Panko Breaded Meatballs. Whether you just want some quick snacks or are throwing a full blown Settlers party, this cookbook has recipes to complete your gaming experience.
