Female Sexuality and Cultural Degradation in Enlightenment France : Medicine and Literature by Mary McAlpin Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Farnham, Surrey, 2012

In her study of eighteenth-century literature and medical treatises, Mary McAlpin takes up the widespread belief among cultural philosophers of the French Enlightenment that society was gravely endangered by the effects of hyper-civilization. McAlpin's study explores a strong thread in this rhetoric of decline: the belief that premature puberty in young urban girls, supposedly brought on by their exposure to lascivious images, titillating novels, and lewd conversations, was the source of an increasing moral and physical degeneration. In how-to hygiene books intended for parents, the medical community declared that the only cure for this obviously involuntary departure from the "natural" path of sexual development was the increased surveillance of young girls. As these treatises by vitalist and vitalist-inspired physiologists became increasingly common in the 1760s, McAlpin shows, so, too, did the presence of young, vulnerable, and virginal heroines in the era's novels. Analyzing novels by, among others, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Denis Diderot, and Choderlos de Laclos, she offers physiologically based readings of many of the period's most famous heroines within the context of an eighteenth-century discourse on women and heterosexual desire that broke with earlier periods in recasting female and male desire as qualitatively distinct. Her study persuasively argues that the Western view of women's sexuality as a mysterious, nebulous force - Freud's "dark continent"--Has its secular origins in the mid-eighteenth century

A Core Vocabulary for Tamil McAlpin David W.

University of Pennsylvania, 1976. — 146 p. This vocabulary list is directed towards the Tamil instructor and the advanced student. Its primary goal is to bring some order to the teaching of vocabulary in the first two years of Tamil instruction. A secondary goal is to help the student through the vocabulary maze of Tamil diglossia. Three main criteria were employed in selecting words for the list: high frequency, usage, and semantic adequacy. The list is primarily in Modern Literary Tamil (MLT) and is glossed in both Colloquial Tamil (CT) and in English. High Literary Tamil (HLT) words have been entered in brackets after or under the main MLT entry as a third variant. As the normal script used for MLT is in many ways ambiguous for colloquial pronunciation, a system of diacritics has been added to make the pronunciation clear. Appendix 1 groups the words by semantics and usage and allows for access to the list through CT or English. Appendix II gives the few words which have a high frequency in LT but were not included in the main list because of a more common synonym.

To save himself and his family, he must develop a strategy to bring the murderers to justice, uncover the truth, avoid the FBI, prevent management from stopping him and most of all... stay alive. This is a story entwined in turn-of-the-century nostalgia, revealing threats back then which are now more of a danger in our modern day. Stratagems took third place at the 1998 Southwest Writers Workshop contest in mainstream novel competition, under the title “The Stratagem”. It was brought up to date in the mid 2000’s with a more intricate back story, and updated again in 2019 with new content and professional editing. One of the contest judges, in her critique of Stratagems, wrote: " ...it is a heart-pounding, pulse-building story. To quote the cliche, 'I couldn’t put it down.'
